Q: Message from my university IT people explaining why Starcraft II wont work on campus, does this sound plausible?

ChandlerIs changing how the game is hosted even an option ? I haven't seen anything related to this on the SC forums. Right now any multiplayer game I joins lags out and I get dropped right away..but the games do at connect at least, they are just unusably laggy. Thanks! Chandler, The cause of ...

Q: How can I effectively play a Sentinel in multiplayer?

FAEI've never played a Sentinel at all in any of the games proper, so I have very little experience with their basic playstyle. As most of my experience has been with Vanguards and Adepts, I'm having trouble trying to figure what the Sentinel's strengths are and how best to play to them. I'm playing...

> (other possibilities are also possible of course)
@OrigamiRobot I think so.
@GnomeSlice To who? Starcraft 2 is coincidental in the question. It really has nothing to do with the game. It is about university networks and policies.
@OrigamiRobot I agree, but that's still something lots of people probably wonder about.
@GnomeSlice That does not make it on topic.

What makes it off topic?
I wonder about whether I should get a new fan belt in my car sometimes too.
I couldn't ask that on gaming.
@GnomeSlice Because the gaming aspect could be completely removed and the question would be the same.
@StrixVaria The question would still be applicable to gaming...
Just no single, specific game.
@GnomeSlice So is changing my fan belt. I can't get home if my fan belt breaks, which would negatively impact my gaming time and which games I could play.
@GnomeSlice Whether or not I upgrade my RAM could be applicable to gaming, but I'm not going to ask about it here.
@StrixVaria Now you're just being silly.
Those university policies and such can be directly applicable to gaming.
Mar 22, 2012 13:40
@GnomeSlice Explain how they're different then.
@GnomeSlice So can my fan belt. If I can't get home, I can't play my games. That directly affects my gaming.
@GnomeSlice This questions is basically asking "Is this how networks work?"
@GnomeSlice Should I ask "How can I get a stronger wireless signal from my router?" here? It can be very applicable to gaming.
@OrigamiRobot I guess I'm not supposed to say 'yes' to that.
Basically, whatever I think is usually the opposite of what the correct action should be.
I can make anything applicable to gaming if you want to allow loose connections like that.
@OrigamiRobot This is what I was trying to prove.
"Should I wash my clothes while I'm playing video games?"

PROGRAMMING ON A BOAT
I guess the point I was trying to make was that I don't think that connection is as loose as the ones you're making.
The power draw from the washer could cause a breaker to trip, or make less power available to my router/console/PC.
@OrigamiRobot Fine, I'm wrong.
I'm still not voting to close it.
Just because.
You say that like I gain something from you VTCing and you're keeping it away from me.
@OrigamiRobot I say that just to be annoying.
But no, I see your point, but I still stand by my opinion that it can do well on the site.

@OrigamiRobot BLAHBLAHBLAH
every day you guys (@OrigamiRobot and @StrixVaria) get a little closer to just outright banning questions that have a problem whose context is gaming, but whose problem is not
if you're going to take that stance, just do it
@IanPugsley I already have that stance. If the gaming aspects can be removed and the question is unchanged, it should be off-topic.
@OrigamiRobot and yet we allow console-related questions that are entirely unrelated to gaming
@IanPugsley Entirely?
Asking about a gaming console would be related to gaming by definition, no?
Mar 22, 2012 13:53
@IanPugsley I've already taken that stance.
@GnomeSlice in his mind, entirely (it is not a problem about a game)
We are a site to solve gaming problems.
Not "problems gamers have".
@StrixVaria @OrigamiRobot I don't mean just take it, I mean do something about it on the meta
@StrixVaria I just don't understand how a question about a gaming console is not a 'gaming problem'.
My first Q here fits that definition: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/21386/…

A: What is the dividing line between gamer problems that we do and do not cater to?

StrixVariaThis is essentially a reasoning behind Shaun's rule idea, but it's too big for a comment. Solution To reiterate Shaun's solution: These questions are off-topic in all cases, with no exceptions. The rule would be: If the gaming elements can be completely removed from the question, then the ques...

A: Is this question about general internet security on topic?

StrixVariaI believe that, until a concrete line can be defined, this question is still off-topic. As soon as someone suggests a concrete line that makes sense and will place this question into the on-topic side, we can re-open the question under the new rule, which I will gladly help enforce. I just can'...

I'm in the minority, but I still argue it every time.
@StrixVaria Ouch... I don't think those deserve those scores.
I'd argue that my question (and the answer that was given) adds more awesome to the site.
@DavidB This is my argument as well.
