@GrumpyLazers God, stop asking this question. It's been asked half a dozen times before!
@MBraedley Except the dupe you linked assumes cheats to be on, which the new Q apparently doesn't have.
And, as far as I know, there currently is no way to create an adventure mode map w/o cheats.
@FEichinger The one I linked to is the original, as evidenced by the number of other questions closed as dupe of it.
@MBraedley Which still makes it not a dupe of the new Q.
@FEichinger The finer details aren't really important unless you link to an existing question saying that it's a different problem. It's the same problem. The asker has shown some research, by issuing /gamemode 1, but it doesn't look like she's searched the site already.
Apr 28, 2013 18:57
@MBraedley No. What I'm saying is that this is indeed a different problem.
This assumes Adventure mode is on. This includes "cheats are off" and "We have created a new world" - which means it's impossible for that new world to be in Adventure mode. This makes it a different problem.
I stand by my close vote.
@FEichinger Maybe you should write or edit an answer to provide more information if you're so up in arms. One that covers all aspects of "Can't break blocks".
I can't tell just what causes it. It may well be a bug, even. But it's most definitely not due to adventure mode, as from the problem description. That's all I'm saying.
@FEichinger Whether or not it's a dupe is independent of existing answers.

@FEichinger I suspect that the mouse button isn't properly mapped, if they are indeed in creative mode.
I'm personally sick of "I can't break blocks help" questions...
Apr 28, 2013 19:07
But I can't break blocks
@OrigamiRobot I don't disagree, but the "master" definitely describes a "I played around with the gamemode and ended up unable to break blocks." - This isn't the case with the new question, simply because it's not possible for that to have happened. That makes it a fundamentally different problem here.
Because it always means they've done something horribly wrong, and we have no clue what, specifically
HELP!!!!1111
@FEichinger Tell me the problem statement. What is the core of the problem being faced. Then tell me it's not a dupe.
@kalina Here's how to break the blocks: Open Minecraft and go up to the block. Now open Windows Explorer and find the System32 folder. Delete it.

There are exactly 2 reasons for this problem in SSP, and about 4 reasons for this in SMP.
Ooooh FANX4HELP
And all of those possibilities have been certainly covered by now, I hope
+REP4U @Yawus
@Unionhawk This is exactly what I'm saying. Right now, the "master" only covers one of those reasons - duping the other reason to it without covering it in the master does not answer the other problem.
Idea: Focus on getting people answers to their questions rather than enforcing policy regardless of circumstance.
Apr 28, 2013 19:13
@FEichinger No, the core problem in both respects is "I can't break blocks." Everything else is just filler
@MBraedley No, everything else is the reason for it to happen. Which is what we need to address when fixing it.
@FEichinger The two reasons I can think of are improperly mapped controls and accidentally in adventure. Or maybe playing the game entirely wrong by not holding mouse1.
Either way, they're doing something horribly wrong
@FEichinger I'm not saying it isn't information we can use to solve the problem, but the problem has already been asked.
@Unionhawk I had that last problem for a good 15 seconds when I first started playing Minecraft. Click, click, click, click hmm...it's not working, click+hold oh, there it goes.
@MBraedley Not in the question you linked to. That has not asked the same question. It has the same resulting problem, coming out of other reasons.
Apr 28, 2013 19:15
@StrixVaria I will admit, so did I; I think we all did. But if it takes more than 3 minutes then something's wrong...
Again: I'm not against adjusting the "master" to cover both topics. But right now it doesn't. Duping the other reason to it just means the other reason will never be answered there, simply because it is never assumed to be the case.
@FEichinger The problem is the same. Might be different causes, might be different solution, but it's the same problem.
Our format forces answers to be split into two parts, if there are two different solutions due to different circumstances. That is ridiculous.
@FEichinger No, it's not.
Yes, it is.
Apr 28, 2013 19:19
Now maybe I'm just a little jaded over this particular problem, because it's been asked so many times before
If someone searches "minecraft cant break blocks" they shouldn't be presented with 10 questions with identical titles.
It should be one question with a well formatted answer.
@OrigamiRobot Never disagreed on that. But right now we're duping to a question that is defined as a narrow "This reason results in this problem results in this solution.", but gets everything - even other reasons - duped to it, because hey, same title!
This is the pitfall that causes some of those questions to appear over and over again - they were never actually answered. We just pretend they were, due to policy and - again - hey, same title!
@FEichinger No, it's the same problem, not just the same title. If the same problem has multiple causes, that information should be on one place.

Q: How does Wild Card: Side Bets really work? (Spoiler)

SandokanThis is my first playthrough and I think I have done things backwards compared to what the designers intended. I scoured all of the wasteland and did all the DLC before I even set foot in New Vegas. Now I feel slightly confused, especially from the Wild Card quests or more specifically - Wild Car...

@FEichinger Then fix the question and answers! Hell, I'll do the first part for you.
Apr 28, 2013 19:24
@FEichinger "This answer didn't work for me" is not a reason to ask a new question. It's a sign that a better answer is needed.
@OrigamiRobot Now, just how do you imagine a user with a different problem to indicate this at all? Edit the question? Gets rejected because it alters the meaning. Post a new question? Dupe, was already answered. -- This is why we're having this discussion at all. A better answer is needed. But it's never going to appear if we mindlessly dupe everything to a question that does not address the problem at hand.
I forgot how annoying cart rides are
@FEichinger Comments, bounties, coming to chat.
@Unionhawk Have you written an answer with these four points?
Apr 28, 2013 19:27
And how awful mobile chat is
@OrigamiRobot All of which require reputation, which a new user coming to the site to ask this question is not going to have. But they still face a problem that's never been answered.
@badp I have not... I was under the impression that such an answer exists, but apparently not?
@FEichinger That doesn't mean they get to ask a duplicate question. We don't allow comments as answers just because the user doesn't have enough rep.
@Unionhawk cracks whip
@badp sigh
Apr 28, 2013 19:29
If you're tired of questions that keep coming it helps when you write the canonical answer and garner all the reps
@FEichinger We routinely edit questions to expand or narrow their scope when appropriate. In this case, it is very much appropriate to expand the scope of the existing question, which I have just done.
@OrigamiRobot I'm not saying they do. I'm saying either both questions remain for both individual settings or the master gets fixed to accomodate that. Neither is the result of mindless duping.
See bobince for a rather extreme example of this
This answer pretty well covers it

A: Why can't I destroy or place blocks?

Marco GeertsmaAlso make sure that your gamemode is not set to adventure mode. for regular survival mode enter : /gamemode 0 for creative mode enter : /gamemode 1 for adventure mode enter: /gamemode 2 Survival mode is just the minecraft as everybody knows it and this is probably the mode you want to be c...

@FEichinger Then fix it yourself or find someone who can. Leaving dupes open is not the answer.
Apr 28, 2013 19:30
@MBraedley This still requires some kind of decision whether or not it's actually the case. I bet my ass an edit by a new user to accomodate the second problem as well would have been rejected immediately.
It doesn't cover the potential keymapping issue, but it covers most everything
@Unionhawk It starts with "also" so that's a bad start for a canonical answer.
@FEichinger Are you saying you would have rejected my edit? What do you think another average user would have done? What does the room think of my edit?
user15026
rolls in
@MBraedley I'm saying that if anyone had just randomly edited it, without us discussing it beforehand, it would not have made it.
Apr 28, 2013 19:33
@badp Well... It's a start, anyway. I don't know.
@AshleyNunn o/
oh noes, today I have used up all of my delete votes
@FEichinger I doubt that. I would have accepted it if I came across it.
