${app:8:5} would be an extension to that: cutting off the first 8 chars, and then picking the next 5 only – abandoning the rest.

You can even "search & replace" in a string :) Just browse through Adebar sources, you'll find tons of that there. Often with comments what that statement does, so I can remember that later (in case it got too complex ;)

put together, it picks the string within brackets: foobar [moo]moo :)
