I'm doing a time motion study, and will be following a doctor tracking their "actions" while they go throughout the day
I've categorized sections of 'tasks' that are performed
each section has a unique TASK ID series numbering system:
cat 1 = 1000 series
cat 2 = 2000 series
etc
When I then start observing the doctors, I need to be able to 'select' a task from ALL of the tasks from ALL sections
OK, I definitely think you're best to have all the tasks in one table - you can then use relationships to enforce integrity (and help if you update, etc)
The "Tasks" table will just have an additional field which identifies which category the task is in
So how do I go about that?
that's the very basics of what I'm talking about
you'd then have your other tables reference Tasks as necessary
Hmmm.... but that's a single table for tasks and not for multiple tables
is there a specific reason they need to be in separate tables?

Well it allows me to have each sub-section automatically generate numbers in the number series of that category
for example cat 1 = 1001 1002 1003 1004 etc,.
hmmm I see
ya... I really don't want to enter each of those numbers myself, and more importantly this prevents me from creating dupe numbers, or even skipping them
so unless there a way to have autonumbering create the next number based on the category that the task is in... this was the best that I could think of...
note: I'm extremely noob to access
