Welcome to Project Update Thursday
nicely done guys
:D i have project updates
but my phone is all the way over there :<
oh, do tell!
Did you find a stud?
I painted my bathroom door black
haha no studs
oh! and the electrician came and took down that ugly ugly lamp
Jun 14, 2012 19:00
And replaced it with a singly ugly one?
haha
nope! replaced with a nice ceiling fan
So much better than AC on a hot night.
I'm going with, 15% better. http://t.co/48JrVdvY
and!
I see a bathroom door, and I want to paint it black. (Stole the idea from @danielkanter and it looks bombin!) http://t.co/iVSva8Nd
I have finished pictures of the door
No! You've gotta put the fan over the bed. It makes it possible to sleep.
@ChrisCudmore technically, it will be
i haven't put the bed in yet
Jun 14, 2012 19:02
ah...
Evening all.
it also makes it safer to swing from the fan

here's the kitchen that needs all new doors!
Oh, and for those curious, my new kitchen! http://t.co/SyMb5TrD
Sorry I've not been around chat for a while.
oh hey @ChrisF how's it shaking
Jun 14, 2012 19:03
howdy @ChrisF
@Aarthi On the DIY front it's frustrating. Trying to get a few jobs done for my mum and each one either takes 10x longer or throws up other jobs that need doing.
I think every DIY job involves way more trips to the store than I ever plan
Though we have finished insulating the wall between the dining room and garage and finished the decorating in the dining room.
The current job is replacing the bathroom taps, but I'm having "fun" with the bath taps (hence the recent question)
@ChrisF ugh that's the worst
@BMitch omg this is 110% true
Jun 14, 2012 19:06
lots of bath-related questions lately.
do we have a master plumber "on staff" ?
The corollary: It takes more trips to Lowes than you expect. Even if you plan for unplanned trips.
My last bath project included several trips to find the right size pipe to connect the bathroom sink to the trap. On the last trip, I realized it was in the box labelled "for bathroom sinks".
Did you all see that I put a notice about PUT on the Community Bulletin?
@Aarthi - do you know if there are plans to be able to put recurring events up?
ohh, shiny!
@ChrisF Oh! I thought it did that automagically? If not, thank you for adding that, Chris. I believe chat integration is coming.

The thing that drives me nuts about plumbing is the different measurements of gauge vs outside diameter vs inside diameter
@BMitch patpat Me, I'm debating when/how to change out my kitchen faucet. It's ugly and terrible, but an aerator will tide it over for several more months.
This job in the bathroom has involved several trips to get connectors, taps that were out of stock, and the latest problem washers that are a little to small so they get forced up the tap rather than being trapped between the trap and the nut.
@Aaron the inside vs outside diameter is why I went back several times
:< how troublesome!
fortunately my home depot is less than a mile away
that comes in handy when you're driving around in DC traffic with something hanging out your trunk
People are still crazy enough to tailgate you when there's a large board a few feet from their car hood
@Aarthi if the old aerator is only clogged, just remove it and drop it in some CLR to see if you'll get some more life out of it
Jun 14, 2012 19:18
@BMitch I switch between Hyattsville, College Park, and the north cherry hill one
@BMitch mine's missing an aerator entirely.
doh, maybe they left it in the CLR for too long :-/
@Aaron didn't realize you were in the area, I'm over on the Fairfax side, and Grebo is up in MD somewhere
@BMitch ha
BLOGS!!!
speaking of blogs, I never saw the blog button light up this time
only noticed because of G+
Jun 14, 2012 19:27
Getting ready to build some down and dirty washer and dryer stands.
@BMitch you know, I was going to say that too - I didn't notice it change either
Hmm. I didn't notice.
Maybe it only lights up for @SteveJackson
@BMitch May I suggest that you get in on the Zipcar DC groupon deal:
$30 for $30 driving credit, no initiation fee, 1 year free membership fee and they have pickup trucks, SUVs, and cargo vans around the area
That's going to be my plan for oversize items - there is a Kia Soul near the hyattsville college park that I can probably get big stuff into
mine didn't light, either. i was just reading the blog
if you don't need it often, the home depot $20/hr trucks are a good deal
Jun 14, 2012 19:31
If not, there's a cargo van also close by, and there's a Tacoma pickup about 1 mile away
@BMitch I don't think all of the ones near me do it, and I think you also have to pay for gas
The back of the home depot trucks take a flat 4x8 sheet, and my <1 mile trip rarely moves the gas gauge
true, and zipcar also allows one to transport big stuff that have been bought from craigslist, e.g.
I'm a big fan of renting tools from home depot, especially the half day rental that lets you keep it overnight, I've done that for carpet cleaning, drywall lift, etc
that reminds me, I need to find a sucker that wants to buy an old 32" tube TV
that thing is heavy
@BMitch that sucker is The Salvation Army
and the pay is $0
@Aarthi either them or we have a local electronics recycling event, but I'll give craigslist a try
Jun 14, 2012 19:40
@BMitch We had an old CRT monitor that took months to give away. No one wants to take them
@BMitch always worth a shot.
It's amazing how fast some old powertools of mine went via the free section of craigslist, the batteries didn't work and I don't think you can buy new ones, but I had 20 people ready to take them in 30 minutes.
wow that's amazing.
then again, some people are good at salvaging stuff like that.
Some people always have more time than you do to do "stuff"
Or they have a huge storage unit and can list them at $5 and if they hold onto it for 1 year, that's fine
Jun 14, 2012 19:55
that's pretty much the truthiest truth that ever truthed. or something. i'm tired, guys.
2
@Aarthi and articulate as well.
I try. /wry
but seriously, painting my doors black was an amazing idea
i'm so glad i did so
the door looks PHENOMENAL
man we're pretty slow today, huh?
it's the afternoon post sugar rush crash
and I'm putting up my craigslist ad :)
haha
i'm desperately trying to sell some chairs of mine
i'm hoping they get picked up today, though then the question becomes, do I go back to manhattan to clean my place, or go in the early morning tomorrow?
Jun 14, 2012 20:11
Anti-theft TV for sale (no thief in their right mind would try to take this): washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/3077999269.html :)
hahaha
i call those "nintendo tvs" they're perfect for N64s
That was how I tried to sell it at our neighborhood yard, the kids wanted it, the parents were like "heck no!"
hahaha
ok, time to re-secure the TV to the hand truck and then see if the neighbors cat has come out of hiding (cat sitting duty, let the fella out this morning and haven't seen him since).
