Welcome to Project Update Thursday
There it is!
So I came across some bloody archaic wiring at my brother's this weekend.
Hey! @TheEvilGreebo is gone!
Cloth and paper wrapped, and dipped in tar.
Cloth electrical tape splices in the junctions.
No ground, of course.
Did you find the knobs and tubes?
No, it was a 1947 house, so they at least weren't using that.
But the copper was brittle.
We replaced two circuits, and have 2 more to do at a later date. Fishing was the biggest problem.

@ChrisCudmore Always is.
The most annoying wiring I've seen is when the 12/2 comes in from the bottom of the j-box in which there is a switch, and then the 12/2 exits at the top to the fixture
I can never get any work done, cuz I'm always "gone Fishin".
Instead of doing a wire nut with 3 wires (in, out, receptacle for the hot), they do a wire nut for the in and the out, and then just remove a bit of wire to wrap it around the receptacle's hot side
@Aaron What's wrong with that?
(my first statement was incorrect, it's a receptacle, not a switch)

His baby is finally getting out of the hospital next week, and we wanted to get any drywall breaking done before he got home. (3-months premature, and his lungs don't need any dust)
Wouldn't work so good with a switch
And I'm building a deck and pergola next weekend. I'll probably do a photoblog for that one.
Or actually, it was a switch, but it had 12/2 exiting up to other receptacles, and 12/2 exiting to the right for the outlet controlled by this switch only
Anyways, it was anoying and stupid and I didn't have just wire spools, only 12/2 spool and I didn't feel like ripping lengths of it apart just to get a couple feet of black wire
@ChrisCudmore never really understood pergolas. I think they were invented by a guy who hated roofing.
We have grapes. We want them to grow up and over.

Squirrels will eat half the grape and spit the rest at you.
I've tried explaining that to the Domestic Sergeant Major. Apparently I still need to build it.
Squirrels have a 2 second memory, so they don't remember they don't like grapes until they bite one. "Mmm that looks good." "Eww this is gross." "Mmm that looks good."...
Remember the system development life cycle - Planning, Analysis, Design, Implementation and Support. I'm in charge of the last 3.
Which means I'll get a support call about annoying squirrels sometime in the future.

Hey, you guys quit early? lololol

I'm still here, but nothing is happening.
First time in ages I get home early on a thursday and nothing fun going on
boo hoooo
ya Chris F, what time is it there?
@shirlockhomes 9:30 pm
guess you guys solved all the DIY questions earlier! lolololol
Apr 5, 2012 20:34
I posted a link to the pictures of our new hall floor - but it's not a DIY job :)
that's good, cause i'm tired. lol
I really got to take some pics of this rehab, interior done, not that weather is better, outside is next
I was doing what I could to insulate a single skin brick wall between the garage and dining room at my mothers - but couldn't finish it as the flat roof is leaking. Directly over where I need to put up plasterboard.
now, I mean
ARRRRGGGG
flat roofs suck
(you can edit your last message you know)
@shirlockhomes Tell me about it.

Shh! Don't tell everyone. I'll have to give support to everyone now :)
that is your lot. lol
i got a job today on a beautiful lake. Windows and siding, love working in that area
beachfront cottage
may have to bring my fishing pole. lolololol
How come when I get to work on site, it's some industrial estate in the middle of nowhere? People don't believe me when I say that my travel for work isn't glamorous.
i live in a great area in Maine by lots of lakes and vacation spots. gonna stay here summers starting next year, and live and work in Florida winters
may even live on my boat summers.
That sounds tempting. However, with two of the kids still at school it's not feasible for us to be that nomadic. Plus, there's not the equivalent of Florida here in the UK.
I thought everyone went to the spanish Med coast

My son is graduating from RIT in May. yahoo!!!!!! Electrical enginnering/Computer engineering. getting his Masters and BS at same time. Now we can Semi retire.
No more tuition bills...Yaaaaa
BTW Chris, my profile pic is me on the flybridge on the "Black Pearl". My summer retreat
Nice.
With the price of gas, that boat is not going very far. It is now officially a dock yacht. lololololoo
ges here just went over $4.00/gallon USD
my boat gets a wopping .7 mpg... sorta like 4 liters per Kilo
Don't look at the price of fuel here in the UK. £1.40 a litre
Most of that is duty and VAT (which is levied on the duty - so it's a tax on a tax)
ya, when I was stationed in Germany, it was like $3/gal when here in US it was $1. Different tax structure
Last time I was in Europe was 80's
Wife and I want to go to Greece in next couple of years. I got a lot of family ther
Well it will be a lot cheaper :) - or should that be :( ?
