Q: What does the package UPower output if on a desktop

TheRyan722On Ubuntu 12.04, if I use the command: upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0 It will output all of the statistics for the battery. However, what does it output if I am using a desktop (I.e. does not have a battery?)

Q: What is the differences between Ask ubuntu Meta and Ask Ubuntu?

@JoshGitlin OMG! long time no talk!

@LuisAlvarado if you're going to answer someone's meta question, purge the equivalent main one...

A: What is the differences between Ask ubuntu Meta and Ask Ubuntu?

The Lord of TimeThe main site, Ask Ubuntu, is where people come to ask questions about Ubuntu, and to get help with their issues. To put it simply, it's the "Ubuntu Support" part of this site. The Ask Ubuntu Meta is where we discuss things related to the Ask Ubuntu site and its operation that do not pertain to...

@jrg close or burn this with fire, please: askubuntu.com/questions/289887/…
since they have a duplicate on meta.
@jrg thanks.

12:45 AM
@TheLordofTime you know you killed He-Man don't you

@LuisAlvarado yes.
/me has that right as a time lord.

@TheLordofTime I will NOT fight skeletor. That's your problem now.

/me steps into the TARDIS, and goes somewhere else in time and space.
you're on your own :P

-.-.... Silently gets out of time, space, colors, dimensions and steps into a /dev/null place
2

@LuisAlvarado fixed.
... but my answer's better.

12:55 AM
hehe I know

1:15 AM
@TheLordofTime dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda?
System still up, looks stable!

@JoshGitlin i don't think /dev/null will output...

Sure it will, it outputs NUL chars
@jrg hey there, how have you been?

@JoshGitlin probably sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda though. ((DON'T RUN THIS COMMAND IT IS DANGEROUS AND THIS IS MEANT AS A JOKE WITH A MOD!!!!!!!!!))

oh, duh, I'm thinking /dev/zero. You're right, /dev/null won't output :-)
OK, going AFK again!

YOU MAY NOT GO AFK!

Took a few moments to update the AU page on Wikipedia.

Ask Ubuntu is a community driven question and answer website for the Ubuntu operating system. It is part of the Stack Exchange Network, running the same software as Stack Overflow. @JoshGitlin busy, but good overall, you?

reverseengineering.stackexchange.com/a/1987/1536 needs upvotes b/c it's a linux compatible solution afaict...just saying
if it's not, it should be

@CallmeV it's not.
it's a windows software.

boo for windows only ethereal plugins

and it triggers some suspicious-software warnings
so i'd downvote that not upvote.

any process injector/network monitor is going to trigger warnings. back off the angry trigger there chief.

1:47 AM
no, not the plugin, the installer
i whitelisted wireshark already
(and all related plugins)

my guess is to provide process attribution it injects in to all processes and hooks sockets

except i didn't even run the installer, the file's already flagged by symantec
whether that's a false-catch or not is irrelevant

i disagree... but then i'm markedly anti-virus/selling something like that instead of fixing the infrastructure is stupid

Good morning all
I sometimes don't understand why something happen on Ask Ubuntu, but I guess that's life.
@jokerdino Is there a way to tell me who and why this was converted to a comment?

5:39 AM
maybe

That made a mess of the comment :-P

well, he wants to start it from terminal so he can at least get the error message.
it was converted to comment by the same person who deleted it. it's easy to figure that part

Ok, but who was it? Plus the OP has a DUP askubuntu.com/questions/287278/…

can't you see who deleted it?

5:45 AM
@jokerdino I can but mitch is 12k :=)

everyone can see their deleted posts.

So there is no way to find out?

don't you not see this:

How do I ping a user?

@Mitch: Like this.

@LuisAlvarado

@Mitch you need to tell him something in case he comes here later.
(but maybe he figures out anyway why you pinged him)

@LuisAlvarado I need to discuss an issue with you, please

1 hour later…
8:10 AM
@Mitch anything I can help with?

@fossfreedom sure.

Hey @BuZZ-dEE, why did you recommend that this post be deleted? It looks fine to me. askubuntu.com/review/low-quality-posts/114361

@Flimm someone who knows nothing about permissions in /home may not know what they do when running chown -R ;)

@Takkat: the answer that he recommended for deletion did not mention chown -R.

:)

8:23 AM
I was commenting a comment there: askubuntu.com/questions/289813/…

Oh yeah, sorry :)

It felt like OMG they are going to ruin it all ;P

@flimm to me the answer does not explain it good enough. Does not mean I favor deleting though.
it lacks effort...
besides that...creating directories in /home manually should be avoided as is.

Yeah.

I have a co-worker that got into trouble with it...
he made a /home/share/ and set it up as a global share...
and someone else then made a user share... and all went sour...

8:28 AM
That's Murphy's law for ya.

(yeah and I expected it to throw an error but it did not :-X)

Come to think of it, I don't know what the recommended way of having a shared folder is now.

oh there has never been a recommended way but =I= would use a different mountpoint like /share/ or something like that
I do see lots of STUPID ways though... I know a company that has a 1.5Tb disc that has 1 partition (ie. "/")
that made a directory /share/
and the commercial department of that company decided to do 1 commercial activity: release a new catalogue....
and they made a directory setup with "/share/client1" "/share/client2" etc and put in each dir a copy of the catalogue...
sooooo down went the system :-DDDDDD
... PDF. With roughly 10000 articles. 1 article with glossy image on each page.
What was really funny was the comment from the commercial department: "But we have 1.5 Tb on that disc!" >:D
BUZZZZZZZZZ! :=D

@Flimm sorry that was a mistake.

Hi; Does anybody know: how to remove titlebar in gnome-shell?

8:45 AM
@BuZZ-dEE: That's OK, just checking :)
@Rinzwind: one day we'll get a filesystem with deduplication on Linux, and then a scheme like that would actually be feasible.

@dorfa suggest add a picture or two to your question

Does anyone know how to use the diff command?

@Hrishi me! me! me!

@Rinzwind Can you please give me an example of how to compare files in two different directories using diff?

@Rinzwind Thanks a lot! :)

was that it? >:D
I'd expected something more difficult :-P

@Rinzwind :D
@Rinzwind I am getting this error... diff: missing operand after .. :(
@Rinzwind Suppose I want to compare all files in directory X and directory Y. What will be the diff command then?

Don't use relative paths.

$ diff -r /tmp/1/ /tmp/2/
diff -r /tmp/1/ttt.txt /tmp/2/ttt.txt

You need the -r with directories

@Rinzwind Got it!

11:34 AM
and indeed I always use absolute paths too
no idea why :-P

now flag spam before you proceed here.

Relative paths have the habit of not being interpreted correctly, depending on how it gets piped to the binary. Absolute paths are safer.

@Takkat done!
he spammed 10 times today already
and it is gone <3

11:44 AM
@Rinzwind Hey mate, I still having trouble with diff. diff: missing operand after `/home/tuhin/Desktop/X/home/tuhin/Desktop/Y'
@Rinzwind What am I doing wrong?

what is the command?
I do not need the error ;-) just the command

@Hrishi there should be a space betweent the paths ???

@Takkat This.

Is it not free?

@Rinzwind diff -r /home/tuhin/Desktop/X/home/tuhin/Desktop/Y/

11:46 AM

Portal2 was good too. Both where far too short to my taste :D It did have some very challenging puzzles <3

Portal 2 was ... weird.
I have yet to get some of the parts.
But they were both awesome games, obviously.

that one lvl with red, blue and white goo with that corridor was briljant.

@Rinzwind I kept the same file in my X and Y directories and used diff. Why doesn't it show me that I have duplicate files?

@Hrishi diff shows differences and nothing if they are the same

Those levels made me power the hell through 2. I just couldn't stand not finishing them.

@Rinzwind Got it!

QSharedPointer is an awesome class.
I've written some code that makes generating an SSL certificate in C++ asynchronously as simple as:
Promise * p = Certificate::generate();
connect(p, &Promise::completed, [](const QVariantMap & parameters)
{
    CertificatePointer c = parameters["certificate"].value<CertificatePointer>();
    // 'c' is a pointer to the newly generated certificate
});
p->wait();
Easy, huh? :)

weird: after days of trial and error convincing pulseaudio to run in my 13.04 VM I gave up and reinstalled. Now all is good.
