@Seth i emailed the SE team
they are all in NY right now, doing team building stuff (aka, partying), so it'll be a bit.

Ah, yeah.
Forgot about the NY stuff.

ooh i want to team build!

@jrg Thanks.

jrg
if we don't get a response by monday, i'll ping you and we'll decide where to go.

IMO we need a question about enabling them in 13.04 since they're disabled by default.

jrg
agreed.

j0h
oh yeah, i have a question. Why does the command $fdisk -l return nothing? sudo fdisk -l returns partition info. Or rather, why doesnt $fdisk -l return "permission Denied"?

@j0h What is it supposed to do?
Ah..

j0h
i just found that its behaviour is inconsistent with other established methods, and that the blank return is less than helpful

Yeah, I agree.

Probably.

I'll tool around in the source.

G+ has gotten really slow recently..

@j0h It probably doesn't "catch" not able to access any device since you can specify a particular device and you may own a pseudo-device like a loop based disk or something

i went to a presentation about clang, it souned cool, but i havent gotten into using it yet.
right now im wondering why the source code doesnt have a headerfile it requires.

Well it would be an upvote, and maybe a comment.
And if it really, really helped you, you could give him a bounty.

@Mitch I just meant you may want to amend your answer to mention that although it is in the repos, if they wanted to use the latest version they could follow your directions.

installing downloaded stuff can break things. The repositories are at least supposed to be tested to work.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer should do it.

If there's a mod around, can they please edit this comment by changing the word "install" to "installing"?
I ran out of time to edit it myself... and I can't flag my own comments.

@Mitch that is also a sign that you didn't site the orginal place you got the information... because it was not you that made the goo.gl link... you just copied info from somewhere.

@NathanOsman Why would running dpkg -i directly can be dangerous? I have been using it a lot, and haven't had a problem.

@Mitch : "since dpkg does not take care of installing dependencies."

@Rinzwind I guess then I've been lucky so far :)

well it is all well if you install a solo package that has no relation to something important

@NathanOsman - I checked out request type decorators and it looks like the right way to do magic transforms. It's probably not in django main because it's less pythonic and more ruby-ish to have forced magic transforms instead of logical defined transforms. Point being thanks for pointing out one possible how and after some reading I get why it's not in main.

@NathanOsman Got a minute to answer a stupid question?

Sure.

8:21 PM
I have an item positioned with position: absolute;
With top:50%; left:50%;
When I try to give it a border it only extends to one side:
Does that have to do with the positioning?
(I hope I explained that OK >_<)

Hmm...
What do you mean by "extends to one side"?
Do you mean the border only appears on one side?

Exactly.
I thought the zero would appear in the middle of the border.

i'ld guess not, but you could test it by changing it. my guess is it's getting its top left position from the parent container (smaller than full-screen) and grows on the right so it looks like a clear right.

@Seth, about the "minor edits": it seems that "improving" a suggested edit hides the problems from the suggester (if he not really reading each one), because he gets the rep as soon as the improvements done. So it might be helpful to keep "improvements" rather small :-) or else reject the edit with a good explanation.

@Seth: Okay, here's an example: jsfiddle.net/h9KE6

8:26 PM
@guntbert Agreed. I've had a reviewer reject them from the improvements page and only make minor changes to what I proposed.. that was so confusing..

The edge of the upper-left border is at the exact middle of the page.
Is that what you were looking for?

Yeah that was.
I see what I did now.

@Seth, ah that happens too :-) - you still remember those times ?

Great.

@guntbert That was actually on another site :P

8:28 PM
@Seth You mentioned '0' appearing in the middle of the border... were you setting an explicit width for the element?

@NathanOsman Yes I was. I forgot to mention that :P

Yup, that would do it :P
You either need to remove the 'width: ...' or also use 'text-align: center;'

Hmm. Got it.
Or maybe I could mess with padding?
Probably not as efficient as text-align though..

Padding wouldn't work in this case since the padding is simply added to the width you specify to obtain the total width.
(At least with the default box model set.)
I'll show you an example.

OK, great.

8:34 PM
...and then add:
padding: 10px;
...click "Run" and watch the size of the box carefully.

Ahh.. I see.
yep. So text-align it is.
Thanks for your time @NathanOsman!

How do I specify an environmental variable when running an application?

Oli
FOO=bar executable

Hmm.
> you have to start it with the environment-variable "LOG" being defined.
So how does that fit together?
LOG=true?

Oli
Largely depends on what it expects log to be set to. Probably a path.
LOG=/home/seth/log.txt executable

Ahh..
I'll try that.
Doesn't seem to work, but I might be doing it wrong.
In Windows you right click on an executable and use "Properties" to add variables and such
When I try that in Ubuntu it gives me an error about slashes not being allowed in names :/

LOG=true doesnot work
BUT log,c just and only tests !getenv("LOG")
it seems bugged to me

11:13 PM
No..
So lets start over.

if you are looking for tom's topic's answer ;)

How do I specify an environmental variable for an executable?

you don't?

I'm trying to enable logging for a specific app

notify-osd? ;-)

11:14 PM
@Rinzwind :P
Yep.

like I said just now: it does not work.
it seems bugged

Well anyway.. How did you set LOG=true in the first place?

I already have an answer for that topic but it does not work as they claim it should;-)
export LOG=true

Where do I put that?

command line for 1 time
or /etc/bash.bashrc permanently

11:16 PM
:S

Oli
Not sure bashrc is going to make much difference if the system is launching it.

oh and notify-osd should pick it up after you do
pkill notify-osd ;)
but it does not

blows out of mouth

:D

OK.
I'm really confused now :P

11:17 PM
me too
I expected it too work...
you can also put that in /etc/environment btw
oh and fyi there is also a getenv("DEBUG") that writes to notify-osd.log ;-)

@Rinzwind Just add LOG=true (theoretically of course)?

What are we trying to do?

@NathanOsman Answer this:

no its not

Q: How can I read NotifyOSD messages after they are displayed?

Tom BrossmanI'd like to read a list of messages displayed by notify-osd from time to time. I'm using 12.04 still, if it matters. Is this possible? 11:19 PM
I think I have an answer for you, but... it's a secret :P

here nathan ;-)
lol

yes @Seth

So we're on the same line :P

Okay... so where do environment variables fit into this?

11:21 PM
here is the program that does it: sourcecodebrowser.com/notify-osd/0.9.11/log_8c.html

oh Nathan:there is a
if (! g_getenv ("LOG")) retuen;
inside a file. But setting it does NOT make it log.

Then "LOG=1 notify-osd" should work?

Where do I put that?
I've been told so many locations...

11:22 PM
command line seth ;)

Into a terminal.
But make sure notify-osd isn't already running.

thing is notify-osd is not a normal executable

I found this line in the source code:
if (! g_getenv ("LOG"))
    return;

I already quoted that :-P

A: How can I read NotifyOSD messages after they are displayed?

Luis AlvaradoAfter carefully looking around (A LOT) I found a code change in 2011 about making notify-osd not output by default to the log file because this was used for debugging purposes and wrote to the HDD every time it did. I'm not sure setting LOG=1 in /etc/environment is such a good idea.

and I hope he tested it cuz that is basically what I did and I did not get any notifications

Considering that it affects this program, who knows how many other programs it will effect?

11:26 PM
@NathanOsman well, it used to be more simple when a "copier" neither scaned to a computer nor printed from one. I bet most scanner/printers have a seperate copy function that would work diffrent if it was told to scan then print.

> For example, this me after disconnecting 2 times my wired connection:
@Rinzwind This reminds me of the UPS vs FEDEX commercial XD

@NathanOsman so I would say a "all-in-one" has a scanner and printer, and is a copier.

Hmm... okay.

just thoughts at the moment....
although in real life i would just call it a printer and be done with it.

@Rinzwind ^^

11:55 PM
@NathanOsman how is the new nitroshare going?

Pretty good. I've got over 2,000 lines of source code now - half of which was written in the last three weeks.
Over 200kb last time I checked.
Don't get my wrong - I'm not saying LOC (lines of code) is an indication of progress, but... it does show that I've been busy :)

Sure does @NathanOsman! Good job ^-^
