3:00 PM
Which is coming up in 3 days time!

O_O
I forgot.

Speaking of silly keyboard layouts not even including the grade symbol, why doesn't Microsoft (and everyone copying them) use combining ("dead") keys properly? ´ (accent) and u combines just fine to ú here, but ´ and s don't combine to ś. Why not?!? Silly Microsoft, I have to write my own keyboard layouts every so often and they are a pain to integrate ... >_<

@MartinSojka Because 'merica!

@OrigamiRobot That's actually the German keyboard layout.

We don't use no fancy schmancy accents. DEAL WITH IT

3:03 PM
@MartinSojka Probably because most languages don't use any of these crazy letters

... if by most languages you mean "simplified English" ...

@MartinSojka I'm not sure, but I don't think there are many languages that use accents on arbitrary letters, the most common ones seems to be accents on vowels

@MadScientist English, French (though it has ç), German (though it has ß) and Italian are the ones that come to mind, a few others in Germanic area too but I don't know them good enough. Spanish and has ñ, Romanian has accents (below) s and t, almost all Slavic languages (those with a Latin-derived alphabet) have accents over c and z and commonly over other consonants. Finnish has š and ž. Turkish languages often have accented g, Maltese dots over c, g and z, and there are some East Asian languages..

Q: How to send out some traffic via my vpn connection

djsmiley2kI had a working setup where I could access all my work resources which are accessed via VPN going via my server previously however at some point recently this stopped working for no obvious reason. desktop - server - (vpn) - work Currently I have the following routing tables: Desktop: Kernel ...

Damn, I'm gonna need a bounty or something:(

3:22 PM
I am back sans one tooth. If only I had something large and fluffy to eat while I recover, like a biscuit.

@StrixVaria Lets not start this again...

@fredley What time do you normally go to bed?

@OrigamiRobot I usually power down my computer between 11.30 and midnight

@fredley You power down your computer?

@StrixVaria It's in the room I sleep in, so putting it to sleep results in too many pulsing lights

3:24 PM
@fredley I'd like help powering my quarry and not getting distracted by Mystcraft.

@OrigamiRobot NP
Build a tesseract and steal power :-P

I don't know how T_T
NEI wont tell me how to get liquid end

@OrigamiRobot Haha, it's ok. Easy way to start is with a Hobbyist's steam engine. They don't blow up (unless you're stupid)
@OrigamiRobot From a liquid transposer

@fredley I know that part.

Back to gaming topic ... any recommendations for a way to quickly add DwarfFortress-like ores and metals to my Minecraft (Forge) server?

3:25 PM
Put ender pearls into magma crucible, then pump from that into transposer
@MartinSojka Good question, ask on site

@fredley This doesn't sound anything like the minecraft I played o_O

@djsmiley2k FTB

@OrigamiRobot wat?

@fredley I wanna just make a solar array. I just need help wiring it all up.

@OrigamiRobot Oh ok

3:27 PM
@OrigamiRobot "Liquid Metals" mod?

@OrigamiRobot Electrical engine, tin wiring, solar panel
I'd recommend starting with at least 4 solars to power the engine
@MartinSojka No, thermal expansion

ah yes, i was told to join before
I'll come play one day, do I need lots of mods?

@fredley and buildcraft pipes or RP tubes from the quarry?
@djsmiley2k There's a launcher that takes care of all that.

@OrigamiRobot Either is fine. Quarry auto-ejects

Q: How to make fighting easier in Tomb Raider 2013?

uncoveryI am having huge issues in Tomb Raider 2013 to fight in close combat. When it says "mash left right" I do that, and I think fast enough. But I do not know if I have to be just faster or exactly in the timing of the screen. I fail about 30% of the time. Then, when I have to kick with the foot, I...

Q: EVE Online - questions about station trading

cornjulioxI've got an alt that's engaged solely in station trade, I had a few questions maybe some other more experienced traders could answer: Do you put all the money in your possession into buy orders, or do you leave a little in your wallet? My plan was to have this alt generating income with which t...

@fredley In a specific direction or anywhere?

@OrigamiRobot Any side I think

@OrigamiRobot and my linux usage isn't a problem?

@djsmiley2k Don't think so
It's all Java at the end of the day

@fredley ok, that makes life easier
well yeah....

3:29 PM
Just download the .jar
and run as you normally would minecraft.jar

@fredley I already set up the quarry itself in New Miner

@OrigamiRobot Right. Do you have a method of getting stuff across ages yet?

I just need to power it
@fredley I have 2 ender chests.

@OrigamiRobot Oh, awesome.
In that case, just place engine next to quarry
(electrical engine if you want to use solars)
Then place solars in contact with engine, or connected with tin wire.

Right, I just didn't know what wire to use.

3:31 PM
@OrigamiRobot For solars, tin is fine, but don't use tin with anything more powerful, as it will asplode
@OrigamiRobot Remember engine needs redstone signal to turn on

Insulated copper should be fine as well for most purposes and is cheap enough.

@MartinSojka Tin has lower energy loss

And glass fibre is tops

@SaintWacko But expenseballs

@fredley Yeah, although I'm sure you have enough materials to make plenty

3:33 PM
As an electrical engineer, this part is arbitrary and confusing.

@SaintWacko Me, yes!

@fredley If you're running more than 3 blocks length of a cable between solar panels and the battery box and between the box and the engines, you're doing it wrong anyway.

@OrigamiRobot Glass fibre is confusing, yes. Everything else makes sense though, you need different cables for different voltages. Use the wrong one and kaboom.
@MartinSojka True.

@fredley Tin having lower energy loss is mighty confusing though. :)

@MartinSojka But, copper is more in demand in the early game than tin.

3:34 PM
@fredley Yes and the wiring is rated in current and other things reference voltage and power is in EU and non of it makes sense.

Hmmm, any suggestions for a static site generator?

@MartinSojka True. Also HV cables having higher energy loss is just stupid

Nothing too sophisticated. Not looking to build a blog around it.

@OrigamiRobot Just forget everything you know about electrical engineering when playing
It's not electricity, it's EU.

@fredley And tin is not more conductive than copper! Tin isn't even conductive at all!

3:35 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone Wordpress
@OrigamiRobot shhhh

@fredley I can't T_T

@fredley Uh, that is not a static site generator

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Good enough
@YiJiang'sEvilClone What do you even need it for?

Building a single page website that occasionally need to be updated

@fredley FTB seem to do weird stuff with its availability then. In something like Tekkit (or pure IC²/BC), you'll have half a stack if you just dig down to diamond level; more than a stack if you hit a ravine on the way down.

3:36 PM
Data, but not database driven

@MartinSojka It's available, it's just that you need so much of it!

I suppose I can just roll my own
Something that turns a bunch of Markdown and JSON files into HTML

@YiJiang'sEvilClone This is probably your best bet. Get bootstrap and fling it together.

@fredley Gold is less conductive than copper, but doesn't corrode. It should be used in the circuits instead of copper wire.

@OrigamiRobot Gold cable is a thing, but it has quite high EU loss
Used for MV circuits I think

3:39 PM
@fredley Right, that's the problem.
And Iron is High Voltage? Cmon.

Well, at least you can fix that somewhat. There is a mod to add custom recipes; just make it so that you have to bundle up a bunch of plain copper cables to get HV cables and you're done. :)

@OrigamiRobot shhhhh

@fredley Silver isn't even used at all! It's the most conductive!

Anyone here familiar with WCF security stuff?

@OrigamiRobot shhhhhh!!

3:43 PM
@fbueckert Is that a wrestling thing?
@fredley It doesn't make sense!

@OrigamiRobot WCF = Windows Communication Foundation
So no, not wrestling.

@fbueckert With regards to using it to call an SSRS report, I know enough to find the answers to my questions on SO.

For that matter, having the ability to use aluminium cables for HV later on (just require them to be "thicker" - that is, to use more material per cable length) would be nice too.

@JasonBerkan Nope, this is something different entirely. :P

@fbueckert Then I know nothing.

3:47 PM
@fredley Cable capacities are per source? What does that even mean?

@OrigamiRobot EU travels in packets
packet size is the limiting factor, not total throughput

THAT MAKES NO SENSE

@OrigamiRobot I told you, it's not electricity at all

This is so confusing.

@JasonBerkan Boo.

3:48 PM
@OrigamiRobot Don't you love it when your knowledge works against you?
I have this with redstone. I build redstone like it's silicon, and it usually goes very wrong.

I need to FUBAR some code so that if a user isn't logged in, default to anonymous access.

as you know

@fredley Redstone is easy on = 5V, off =0V

@OrigamiRobot Not in 1.5 with analogue signals.

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, Universal Electricity makes so much more sense over EU or MJ or all those weird other "custom" energy sources (I kinda forgive Thaumcraft here though, after all it's magic).

3:50 PM
Max height tower!

7 mins ago, by fredley
@OrigamiRobot shhhhhh!!

I don't have the heart to tell him that Maxis licensed the rights to the game The Tower and can't actually produce another one.

@fredley Everything has a built in DAC and/or ADC
@MartinSojka It would be fine if they didn't arbitrarily use real terms.

@Powerlord the original Yoot Tower was released on iPad by the original IP owners
...it was basically unplayable with the controls/slow max speed, but it was good to see them release it anyway

@BenBrocka I'm surprised they kept the Yoot Tower name instead of naming it The Tower II.
No new Girl Genius comic today? :(

3:56 PM
You know what I like about EA? They just keep getting better and better as a company.

@Sterno You know what the scary part is? Remove the sarcasm and it's true simply because once you hit the bottom, the only place to go is up.

@fbueckert Is FUBAR your signature move? Like Hulk Hogan's leg drop?

@Powerlord it was actually the original sim tower with a different name, not "the tower 2"
I think

@OrigamiRobot Yes. I FUBAR code to get it to do what I want.

@Powerlord I don't think they're quite to the bottom yet, but they're certainly digging hard.

3:57 PM
I never actually played yoot tower/the tower 2

@fbueckert What's your theme song?

@BenBrocka The original "Yoot Tower", published by Sega for PC in the 1990s, was The Tower II, Sim Tower being The Tower I.

@OrigamiRobot Probably a waltz.

But yes, looking at the iPad version, it appears to be the first game (The Tower I)

@JasonBerkan Is he a heel or a face? Who is his rival?

4:00 PM
Which is a good thing, as Yoot Tower on the PC uses a completely different set of rules. I could build anything I wanted and people never visited my tower.

On tonight's WCF Wrestling Coders Federation, The Marshal takes on Sgt. Sharepoint! cues waltz
4

@OrigamiRobot I can only see @fbueckert as a heel.

We hear from the crowd "Bring on the FUBAR!"

@Powerlord yeah, the name was confusing, but I'm sure it's because Maxis still owns the name Sim Tower
@Powerlord no maid, tower is doomed

@StrixVaria Interesting analysis.

4:02 PM
@BenBrocka And I would have thought Sega owned the name Yoot Tower

user15026
@fbueckert I finished the first Mistborn book last night.

Book 1 is the best

@Sterno Book 1 is the worst.

@StrixVaria Really? 2 was okay and I found 3 really slow
The first book introduces you to the setting and how magic worked, plus you're figuring out what all those passages before each chapter are. good times

I thought 1 was too much of an introduction to the rest.

4:06 PM
It sounds like I liked it for exactly the reason you didn't. :)

The trilogy as a whole was incredible; it's hard to take an arbitrary piece of it and say that was better than the others.
I just remember after finishing the first one I thought "meh" and after finishing the third I thought it was one of the best things I'd ever read.

I was really mad at some stuff in book 1, then I found out she is only 16 and it made more sense.

user15026
I am pretty excited for book two because I really liked the first one

@fredley FTB Wiki says not to use Tin for solar

@OrigamiRobot Oh...
Fine, use copper then

4:17 PM
@fredley LV Solar is 8 EU/t and Tin's max is 5

@OrigamiRobot Oh, I assumed you were using single solars

I'm trying to emulate your setup.

@AshleyNunn Book 2 is awesome. That's the one where Snape tries to kill Dumbledore but accidentally hits Ned Stark isntead.

More EU is faster

@Sterno Spoiler !!!!11!1!!1!

4:19 PM
@Sterno And Rosebud was Bruce Willis's father the whole time!

Guys, I want to tell you something. Ever since having a kid, I've discovered that the world is a scary place where death lurks around every corner.
The whole world is terrifying.

@OrigamiRobot Also, the interior of the hotel doesn't actually match up to the exterior, which is why it's easy to get disoriented when you're told where people are going.

@Sterno Has your kid tried to climb the refrigerator yet?

@OrigamiRobot Not yet. She did try to swallow a sticker and started choking, though. Not awesome

@OrigamiRobot Or worse, had your kid tried to jam a metal object into an outlet.

4:22 PM
But thank God that sugary beverage ban is about to go into effect in New York. That'll make the world safer.

@fredley I guess it would be faster and easier to get something running as opposed to waiting for a more powerful setup.

@OrigamiRobot Absolutely, yes

It's like babies are intent on choking themselves

@Sterno I couldn't handle choking. I'd lose it.

@OrigamiRobot That was pretty much my reaction.
DEATH IS EVERYWHERE

4:23 PM
@Sterno My third kid got a cold and couldn't breath one night. The drive to the hospital is up there as one of the worst experiences of my life.

@Sterno I'd probably end up kicking the baby.

@JasonBerkan :(

I just want to adopt at whatever age self preservation instincts kick in.

On a less serious note, allow me to (one day late) laugh at everyone who had to change their clocks yesterday. Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

@JasonBerkan All my clocks change themselves.

4:25 PM
Also, if you have a kid, never never never never ever never ever Google about how other kids have died from choking, accidents, etc.

@OrigamiRobot OK - allow me to laugh at everyone who had to deal with changed clocks yesterday. Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

@Sterno When I was a kid, a basketball goal almost fell on me at school.

user15026
Small children are like time bombs of ridiculous worry and danger. They make me nervous because they don't understand that you aren't supposed to do some things. Like try to consume stickers as food.

user15026
It is a miracle we all survived to adulthood.

@Sterno I successfully swallowed a thumb tack as a small child
that was fun

4:27 PM
My sister once tried to eat a grape by throwing it into the air and catching it in her trachea.

user15026
I was the cautious one in my family. My sister was the one who always got into crazy situations.

@fredley How... how did you survive that

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I was held upside down by my ankles and shaken

I wasn't much of a daredevil as a kid, but even the little bit I did terrifies me now to think of my daughter doing it.

The thumb tack came back up and I was unhurt.
So basically, miracle/act of God/I am Jesus or something.

4:29 PM
I think the worst thing I did when I was young was to staple my thumb with a stapler

I remember eating dinner with a friend and his daughter recently and she was eating Cheerios by putting them in her mouth and then tilting her head all the way back. It was unnerving.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I peeled my finger with a potato peeler

I got my finger stuck in the little thing on the back of church pews that hold the communion cups. It wasn't life threatening, but it was terrifying and I couldn't yell because it was in the middle of church.

I mostly smashed my head on things though.

user15026
@origamirobot oh man. :(

4:30 PM
Gashed my eyebrow open on a stone step at age 3

I fell backwards down some brick steps once.

Fell over on gravel and had bits of it lodged in my head at about 5
Tripped while running full tilt and hit head on door frame at 7

user15026
I learned that racing on your bike on gravel down a hill with a sharp curve at the end does not go well. 6 stitches in my chin. That was my most impressive non - medical story.

user15026
@fredley seems like you had a two year timer between events.

@AshleyNunn For my gravel injury I received stitches in my head without an aneasthetic. Mortal terror of all needles to this day.

user15026
4:32 PM
@fredley I can see why!

@AshleyNunn There were others, that was just the head-based ones

I was swinging between two counter tops one time. I swung too high and faceplanted right into the linoleum. Knocked myself out.

@OrigamiRobot seen this, I assume? arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/… (you're a gun nut, right?)
One step closer to Borderlands

Are we making you feel better @Sterno?

@AshleyNunn Was in France, parents' French wasn't good enough to converse with doctor
@OrigamiRobot We must be, we're demonstrating how scary things can be and yet we all survived!

user15026
4:33 PM
@fredley oh dear :(

user15026
Yeah, none of us are dead! Hurray!

@BenBrocka I don't like the connotations of "gun nut", but yes. The ability to 3D print gun parts is kinda concerning.

@AshleyNunn The next blood-everywhere injury was gashing my knee open on a fire-guard. Very deep cut, but I screamed the hospital down about refusing stitches. Eventually the relented and just taped it up. Huge scar now.

@OrigamiRobot Meant as someone who likes guns, no negative connotation intended. From an engineering standpoint I find it pretty impressive

user15026
@fredley yeah but I can see why you didn't want them

4:35 PM
@BenBrocka Gun enthusiast would be a better term
@AshleyNunn On the stitches occasion I had to be held down by my father, while my mother fainted. Mental scarring for everyone!

user15026
I once hit my sister in the face with a frozen garden shovel. She got three stitches in her eyebrow. I felt like the worst person ever.
2

@BenBrocka I know you didn't intend it that way, I was just saying. And yes, 3D printing is amazing and it still baffles me how relatively accessible it has become over the years.

@Sterno I hope you're getting all this

@AshleyNunn Blammo!

user15026
The shovel thing was an accident. Shovel went up as she was bending down with her shovel, and bam.

4:37 PM
@AshleyNunn I threw gravel in a friend's face at school his eyes got quite a bit cut.

I knew there was a reason I hated each and every one of you.

user15026
@fredley augh. That's icky.

@AshleyNunn Yeah. I don't think I realised the damage it would do, I was only about 6

@OrigamiRobot The cost has gone down faster than I'd have expected, and people are already making cool stuff

4:38 PM
@StrixVaria That is much more hilarious than it should be

user15026
@strixvaria that is impressive. Person inside would tire out quick.

I got a BB gun when I was like 10 and my cousin and I decided to try to shoot a frisbee out of the air. For some reason I thought the best way to do this was to stand in front of my cousin and throw it straight up. He shot right as it came back down in front of me. BBs hurt guys.

The fact that a gun lower is printable also means that other high-stress stuff can theoretically be printed, which I think is really cool. A huge problem with 3D printing is a lot of people don't trust 3D printed stuff. Which makes sense if it's all just cheap, low "resolution" plastic stuff, but when you get stronger, more detailed designs you can make really cool stuff

@OrigamiRobot Why build a robot with pain receptors?

4:40 PM
@BenBrocka Article on BB today about a 30nm scale printer. That is equivalent to the feature scale on recent processors.

@James I was built to simulate humans.

@OrigamiRobot I read stimulate there.

user15026
@fredley o.O

@fredley That's impressive

@fredley I think the large scale 3D printers that are creating buildings are more interesting than the very dinky ones.

4:41 PM
@AshleyNunn with stimulating discourse. Obviously.

@fredley I can't say I wouldn't consider it.

user15026
@fredley of course. Yes.

user15026
@origamirobot this changes everything.

@AshleyNunn You'd have to buy me dinner first.

@James Circuits. 3D printing integrated circuits is huge

user15026
4:42 PM
@origamirobot noted.

@fredley So is a way to land something on a remote planet and have it build a structure :)

@James The coolest thing a 3D printer can do is replicate itself. Circuitry is the big problem with that process at the moment.

@fredley But... do we really want that technology in the hands of that technology? Just think as to where it could lead [nods a little towards @OrigamiRobot]

@fredley I can replicate myself.

@OrigamiRobot Damnit! Guess its too late

4:44 PM
@James Without the ability to think, you'd just end up with a ton of 3D printers.

I've never tried it before, but I remember someone saying I could cut off my arm and it would grow a new me.

@James It's nearly there already. There's a project where you can print the printer on someone else's printer, then supply your own Arduino.
@JasonBerkan Transcription is not perfect, evolution would take hold.

Or maybe that was some kind of amoeba....
Only one way to find out!

@fredley There is something wrong with that statement

@fredley Only if there was an external force applying pressure on the 3D printer designs. Otherwise you'd just have a normal factory where x% of the product is unusable.

4:49 PM
@JasonBerkan you get x% unusable due to evolution too.

@James Pretty sure it's ok
@JasonBerkan Resources. Eventually there would be competition. This is literally how life started.

@fredley So you have a printer

@James Yes

Annnd I have a printer
I can only print a printer on your printer... and you can only print a print on my printer

o_O

4:52 PM
@James You can buy the parts for the first one

@James Where would it lead? Similar to where mass industrial production has lead, just on a smaller, accessable scale

@BenBrocka You mean.. Skynet? :)

@James What?! Who have you been talking to?! I was just leaving!

@OrigamiRobot I've not been talking to anyone... but I do listen well ;)

@James rollseyes

4:57 PM
Everything is fine. Nothing to worry about.
Wow, I missed lunch.
I really do need to be leaving.

@James It occurs to me that the Cylons and Skynet are similar.

@JasonBerkan you can in theory recycle 3D printed material too, which would make manufacturing defects less costly, especially at super small scale like a home

I wonder if I just FUBARed my code enough to get it to work.

If we do have a "skynet" thing I really hope it's more like the Mega Man X series than the boring "lol all humans are ded gg" stuff
@fbueckert That's what we call compiling

@BenBrocka It compiles. Ship it!

5:00 PM
@BenBrocka Except for the part where I have to test on production servers, since Sharepoint is stupid.

@Sterno They were, for the most part, pretty smooth all weekend.
Though my friends and I did find that our original server did sync between each other much more reliably than some of the newer servers.

Answer: No, no it does not.

Or

5:08 PM
@StrixVaria What's that dude doing in the background with a keyboard?

@StrixVaria I.... what? I .... urgh?!

@djsmiley2k Have you not played QWOP?

hmmmm not that I'm aware of.

Remedy that.

what is it? :?

5:08 PM
It's a flash game that you can find on about 100 different sites if you search.
@Sterno Obviously he has some speakers in his backpack and he's playing keytar.

@StrixVaria And results in hilarious attempts to make people move.
Makes you wonder how our brain handles it.

If I'm ever ultra-rich, I'm paying someone to follow me around and play appropriate background music.

Ok :D
@Sterno MISSSSTAKEEEEEE.
hmmm, i taste blood :/

Q: a graceful optional station

SF.I've built roughly 3000 blocks worth of underground railway in my Survival game. There are stations along the way, near interesting features of terrain that require me to press button to continue. @RavenDreamer is being lazy. He should have hit 100k rep by now.

5:13 PM
@AshleyNunn Once I swung a 3Ltr bottle of squash around my head and smashed it into my sisters face (it was in a plastic bag so it was kind of hammer throw like). I feel kinda bad now, but she was being really annoying at the time :o

Wait.. what

@djsmiley2k offfff...squash...

user15026
@djsmiley2k oh man. That would hurt.

Sadly, any of my child injury stories are all about me inflicting it on myself.
Also, today's the day shit goes down for Prenda Law.
What I wouldn't give to be in that court room.

@StrixVaria Best cosplay ever. It took me like 500 times to get it.
@fredley When a quarry mines things like redstone or diamond, does it pick up the ore or the entities?

5:31 PM
@OrigamiRobot The recipe includes a diamond pick, so it's as if you mined it with one.
