A: Human Resources Complaint About Hiring Process

David EspinaUnless you work for the government or an organization that has agreements in place with unions or similar, a company is free to deviate from its stated policies as much as they want so long as they don't violate law. EDIT: Wow, this is a tough stackexchange site! Companies can deviate from t...

@DavidEspina this site has a "back it up" policy
Most of our questions have some potential to become super localized without comprehensive answers explaining the "why"
From the FAQ - **Make sure your answer adds helpful information and is a complete, stand-alone answer. Read other answers first and be sure not to completely restate information that has already been posted.**

**Please note that answers should be backed up either with a reference, or experiences that happened to you personally. You should always include in your answer information about why you think your answer is correct.**

in unrelated news I think I downvoted the most answers I've ever downvoted this morning

@NickC how do you link chat?

@enderland Click the little arrow to the left of a chat message, and click the "permalink" link to get a permanent link to that chat message

no I mean like in
Please take discussions to chatNickC 10 mins ago

@enderland Oh I just use the regular in-line link style of [insert your text here](url)

oh, that works? sweet

@enderland Yep :) There might be a shortcut too, but I'm not sure. I know some things such as the FAQ can be linked with [ faq ] (without the spaces)

5:40 PM
Best way I know to do it is just use the "permalink" and past it into a comment
[chat] auto-resolves to a link to chat (not a specific message) in comments though I think
Yep it does

Hrrrm [chat] resolves into The Workplace Chat in comments. Good to know, I would have expected it to resolve into just "chat"

Yeah, it's [sitename] Chat
Which unfortunately means meta comments show The Workplace Meta Chat I think

@Rachel @enderland Yeah that's all I did.

Arrrrrrrrrg. I have a complete, help vampire, friend with respect to coding things

@enderland Close his questions. IRL

LMAO
It just makes me want to cry sometimes :)(
Not sure which of those emoticons I want to leave there... guess I'll leave both

I prefer to think of it as a guy with hot dog buns for a mouth

@enderland I get those sometimes.... I find if I tell them the google keywords to search for or links to external resources instead of giving them the answer then they eventually learn to figure out things on their own instead of coming to me :)

@Rachel Oh I know. It is so hard becuase I can solve most of the code problems in like 10 seconds but it takes like 20 minutes of asking questions to get him to solve it himself :)
I should make him post on SE lol

8:05 PM
@enderland I do that sometimes too - tell them to post a question on SO along with the exact details and a small code sample, and have them send me a link to the question. Then if they don't have an answer in a few days, I'll see about helping them find an answer :)

@Rachel might as well get rep for helping. plus I learned TON when I first started posting Qs on SO and got blasted for being, well, lazy

Q: Is it rude to tell an employer who has already hired me that my current job decided to offer me a better position?

Zoe SI accepted a job offer from a company (Company A) and was planning to start mid month. In a strange turn of events, the place I am currently finishing up at (Company B) sold their franchise and now what would have been my old boss is going with the franchise, and just today he's offered me a jo...

Q: Is it considered rude to turn down a job after initially accepting it?

LeastEarlier today, I was offered a position which I accepted. It is supposed to start in about a month. I feel like I've made a huge mistake. Can I do anything about it without coming off as unappreciative to the company? Is it considered rude or inappropriate to change your mind when you've alre...

But no votes to close as a duplicate. What do you all think? Duplicate or no?
Here's another interesting one:

Q: Job Interview in the U.S. - purpose of visit

user5626I've been asked by a U.S. company to fly to their location (I'm european) in order to have an interview. I am ellegible and already applied for the Visa Waiver Program. What should I state as the purpose of my visit when asked by an officer at the point of entry?

A conundrum!

@jcmeloni one of upvotes on "possible duplicate" comment is mine: it means questions look pretty close to me and I like that comment made them "linked". Also, I spent quite a while studying both questions and still can not decide whether these are close enough for being duplicates

do people still tend to insist on using, or even the necessity of, a fan for watercooling?

11:45 PM
@gnat The only real difference is the situation around the offer (one person decided it was a mistake for their own reasons, one person would have chosen differently had they had more info), and the answers to both are, really, "not rude if you do it politely" because the questions are both "can I back out without burning a bridge" (to my mind).
That being said, I'm not going to unilaterally close it as a dupe, and I find the 7 upvotes on that comment interesting :)
