MJB
12:02 AM
Hi all, will unity (Natty) be working under Virtualbox?

couldn't hurt to give it a go
i haven't tried it myself, but i read that some people are quite successful, others aren't. i imagine many are successful, as a major portion of end-user os testing happens in virtual enviroments

MJB
Hmmm... guess I'll make a question of it. tx

@MJB Yup.
I have Natty running just fine in a VM.

MJB
George: including unity? nice, didn't run into trouble?

@MJB I did... but I got it working.

1:02 AM
@GeorgeEdison i've been looking for a regex tool that works offline for a WHILE now, and the tool you recommended in this question matches exactly what I needed:
2
A: Recommendation for Regex editor?

George EdisonBy far, the best tool for the job is RegExr. The link above will take you to the online version, which is awesome and definitely the best RegEx tool I've ever used. If you're looking for something you can install in Ubuntu, then try the desktop version, which is an Adobe Air application:

@EvilPhoenix I know... it's such an awesome tool.
As soon as I tried it the first time, I knew right away that I should install the Adobe Air app.

@GeorgeEdison the wonderful thing is i can develop the regexes for a module for that IRC bot I help to develop

...in fact I installed Adobe Air just for that app alone.

and i can test them too :P
@GeorgeEdison I just did the same :P

I couldn't even tell you how many times I've used this tool.
It's also great for .htaccess rewrite rules.

1:05 AM
:P

Whoever wrote it was a genius.

1:18 AM
@GeorgeEdison ikr?
it can also help people to LEARN about how regexp works
(such as me who fails miserably at regex unless I get help)

2 hours later…

@GeorgeEdison You develop StackApplet, right?

Q: Why can't I copy a large number of files to my USB flash drive?

George EdisonI have about 7000 or so files I'm trying to copy to a USB flash drive. The total size is about 8GB. After copying about 10% of the files, the drive mysteriously aborts the transfer and unmounts itself. Results of dmesg | tail: [ 2193.272548] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd a...

What is going on here?

8:13 AM
Good morning all
@GeorgeEdison hub looses the device?
or maybe flash pen has a thermal problem?

A: Why can't I copy a large number of files to my USB flash drive?

PaulIf you don't need the files in windows, try reformatting the drive to a linux native format. Reiserfs was well known to be good for collections of large numbers of small files. Or you could use the ext4 standard... It may be less picky about how many files are in a directory. Insert the drive,...

Anybody else still use reiserfs and why?

morning @OctavianDamiean

1 hour later…
10:35 AM
Whats wrong with reiserfs?
@ManishSinha Nice Answer!
11
A: Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?

Manish SinhaI don't thing zombie process is much of a headache. A zombie process does not take up any resources. It is just that it has it's entry in the process table. A Zombie process is not an orphan process, it does have a parent. kill, skill pkill will not work since the process is already killed, jus...

indeed that is a nice answer and the question itself is not bad either
+1 for both

@KaustubhP nothing wrong, just interests me if there may be some advantages over ext4 to use it on flash drives

10:53 AM
@Takkat can't say i've ever used it on a flash drive
i've always needed instant windows compatibility

@djeikyb thats true. Cant imagine my drive with reiserfs/ext3.

@djeikyb that's the drawback of all better filesystems, but using NTFS costs you a lot of performance :P

i know reiserfs was supposed to do well with small block sizes

there is Reiser4 as well...

Always need to use a PD with windows!

10:58 AM
ext2fsd.com is a pretty good ext2/3 driver for windows

who needs Windows compatibility? meh :D

could keep a small fat partition with the driver, then ext3 the rest
@OctavianDamiean haha, my music collection does on the rare occasion i have to boot the windows drive

Has anyone encountered a problem in chromium, where pressing <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>D</kbd> doesnt take you to the address bar?

@KaustubhP all the frickin time

ew didn't know about that shortcut :D

11:02 AM
it's one of those despicably stupid decisions they imposed on linux folk. chrome on windows gets alt+d AND a functional Backspace shortcut

now that is amazing! Now I can really just mark the url I need and paste it in with the middle mouse button :D

@OctavianDamiean like you didnt know that?

but i'm not bitter ; p CTRL+L is the shortcut instead. two hands instead of one

nope :p

@djeikyb my problem is that it doesnt take me to the address bar after chromium has been used for more than half a day.
@OctavianDamiean I use it all the time at work.
people use ctrl + c/v to copy to and fro from the terminal!

11:05 AM
don't use kbd shorts too often - they change too much for me to remember. I use a chromium extension to generate clickable links

i always wonder how people ctrl+c to copy from the terminal

@djeikyb Ctrl + Shift + C

ahh. guess i've never bothered to work it out. hand is on the mouse anyway, may as well middle click paste
and it doesn't work in urxvt, so moot for me
@Takkat you never have to type urls into the address bar?

@KaustubhP well that is something I don't do. I mark the text and use the third mouse button :)

@djeikyb @djeikyb same feelings here!
@OctavianDamiean Me too. middle clicl!
Thats what I love about ubuntu. Small improvements in unknown places, that makes your work a pleasure.

11:08 AM
@djeikyb one click when it's referenced like http : / / something

I miss the middle click paste in windows. badly. well for the 15 or so mins I have to help my mom/dad around

@Takkat oh i see. and they just couldn't be buggered to add the html tags

@KaustubhP well there is a very simple solution, make em use Ubuntu

@KaustubhP there's an app that does it, but it's a bit wonky..

@OctavianDamiean @djeikyb eheh, I want them to suffer in Windows, so they can love Ubuntu.
:D

11:10 AM
@KaustubhP you sadist!

meh. They use it to check their mail, and make some excel sheets.
Its me who has a problem with windows anyway. So I dont want to impose something on them.
Plus, their driving on learning curves is pretty slow.

haha, indeed, is it worth the time to train them..

They took almost a year to learn to use windows. I dont wana tear out my hair for another year ;)

@KaustubhP sif learning to use Ubuntu would take a year. :D
you should check that new section out ubuntu.com/business/desktop/overview

oo, purty

11:16 AM
@OctavianDamiean ;) Well, Windows has done its work now.
My dad is currently in an affair with OS X :x much to my chargin

@KaustubhP I installed 10.04 for my mom - she's happy and i am able to support (couldn't support 7)

@OctavianDamiean Is the windows logo same or different?
on the link that you gave @OctavianDamiean
@Takkat yeah, I know what you mean :) I am actually forgetting how to troubleshoot Windows, which is not a good thing. I cant help out the pretty girls in my neighbourhood ;)

i did tech support with a small software company a while back.. when i found out about those tools my life became so much easier

@djeikyb yeah, the sysinternal suite. ahh, good times.
I remember how i bunked lectures in school, because I helped out in the computer lab. sysinternals ftw!

pretty sure i was the last to find out about it : D

11:24 AM
@djeikyb nya, there will always be people behind you ;)

there was another tool i'm forgetting that was useful in troubleshooting bsods

lol, are they troubleshoot-able?
IIRC, there was an app to change the color of BSODs.

some sort of rudimentary symbol debugger maybe. that was fun to play with, made filing bug reports more interesting
haha, it's at least nice to be able to trace stop codes back to a process, even if you yourself can't fix it
@KaustubhP ah, windbg. sweet little tool. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg462988
about as bad as poring through straces or core dumps i suppose

:)
Thankfully I never had to do that digging in windows!

11:39 AM
@KaustubhP Hey. Thanks :)

like what in the world did the libyans think will happen if they ask for help ...
now they are pissed off because the western countries are dropping bombs
I wonder how they imagined that this problem is going to get resolved

Most relieved man in the world: Ahmedinejad
he must be chilling, cuz the heat and focus has shifted to libya.

@KaustubhP I think the exact contrary is the truth

kinda like in LOTR, the eye of sauron is watching someplace else. Gollum wears that ring on mount doom, and we have FOCUS!

that is pretty much also the reason why the arab union suddenly started to rethink their course on supporting that operation

11:52 AM
AMerican policy is resp for half the shit in this world.
Thats why we need more whistle-blowers.
Has openleaks leaked anything yet?

@KaustubhP well you have to keep in mind one thing. Nothing in this world is black or white, especially if it looks like it'd be. It always is multiple shades of grey.

@OctavianDamiean thats true.
We need more resolutions in morality.
Good just doesnt cut it.
Adjectives are used to push your morality from a darker to lighter shade.

morality is a nice thing to have but it works just on paper, just like Marx theory

Morality is also subjective

and I tell you why every social theory and also why morality does not work. It is because as soon as a human being is supposed to apply it, it will fail
it is up to his interpretation

11:59 AM
@OctavianDamiean lies
my social theory of morality is 1) the following may be misconstrued 2) you prolly won't apply it right 3) try not to be too evil

@djeikyb I don't quite get the point there. Are you saying that morality works? I got confused by the statement.

morality can work given looser parameters

@djeikyb well of course it works for the person interpreting and applying it it works it is just a question of whether his interpretation is right or not and that is a question which can't be answered because it involves the judgement of another person, which might interpret it differently
it is just like @ManishSinha said

@OctavianDamiean solipsism solves the problem of other people rather nicely, whether or not you take yourself for reality
and by nice i suppose i mean insane

12:37 PM
oh right I crossed the 2k mark, yay for editing entries :D

@OctavianDamiean \o/

\ö/
I like that fork question
it is not really Ubuntu related but I like it anyway

Q: How can I close this?

Roland TaylorProposal: Intelligent Design, Creationism and Science I think I will try to get this closed. I edited the question details to avoid further argument or w/e. I believe SE is the wrong environment for a site of this sort. How can I delete my own proposal?

Now I'm told I'm not nice... for nothing.
I think they have successfully proven my point...

my opinion is that SE sites are not really the appropriate medium for anything which is not practical. Things that lead to discussions are better suited in a forum or maybe on a blog.
a Q/A site is there to get an answer on a question, which stackexchange successfully managed to extend to some sort of practical information gathering system like well like a wiki.

1:43 PM
woot Ubuntu monospace font is in work? :D

@OctavianDamiean I won't really respond to that - my beliefs are practical - but.. that's another story. I still don't get how I wasn't "nice".

hey Marco

Hey @RolandTaylor

@MarcoCeppi yea that was my reaction. :D hello btw.

1:50 PM
@MarcoCeppi!!
@MarcoCeppi SEe you on the 7'th in DC mang

@lazyPower Great! You're coming down for the MeetUp?

righto rebooting to start Xorg proprietary driver testing :)

hey gang

2:10 PM
@MarcoCeppi yeah i just verified that I get the time off
@MarcoCeppi need to do a tune-up on my whip and i'm there on the 7'th mang

@lazyPower Booya!

\o/

Need to stop using that +1'd the article!

2:31 PM
@JorgeCastro This community has gotten insanely popular since last november.

nah, not yet
still only sitting at 12k users

Just wait for the official Canonical bump

for comparison, there are 15k active users on the forums RIGHT NOW.
as in, active users using it at this moment

Yeah, we could totally see near SU/SF levels

Hrm... where is it supposed to be?

2:38 PM
@failbadp We're obviously better than all three trilogy sites combined :P sarcastic eye roll

No, I mean, the official Canonical bump.
There used to be an "ask ubuntu" button but I can't find it anymore

@failbadp I'm sure when Canonical and SE finalized their talks and paper stuff there's supposed to be a Firefox bookmark, and some other things
I think they're waiting until after Natty speculates

A bookmark in FF4 wouldn't really help when the bookmark bar is hidden by default :)

2
A: List of Ask Ubuntu uses within the Ubuntu community?

Jorge CastroLaunchpad mentions AU on the reporting a bug page:

I noticed that one yesterday
@failbadp I am hoping more for a link here: start.ubuntu.com/current
click "ubuntu help"
for fail

@JorgeCastro actually firefox for me defaults to about:home...
with a Google search box.

2:41 PM
@JorgeCastro The warthog rears it's head

well that's the one ootb

That should be easily customizable

mine defaults to google's normal search

Visibility OOTB is the whole point.

the default help link is so horrible
I want to be "Ask a Question"

2:44 PM
btw the Ubuntu One control panel has a "Community help" button also
I also am hating those underlined-orange-button-clicky-hybrid-thing

heh
IMO they should link to FAQ

1 hour later…
4:00 PM
yawn
greetings

@EvilPhoenix top of the day to you

@EvilPhoenix that last edit was a bit too invasive imo

@JorgeCastro so revert it? you dont have to tell me every time an edit is invasive, just undo it, i eventually get the idea

I rejected it
I just wanted to let you know
so it wasn't "jorge is being evil!"
/me will silently crush all your future edits from now on
j/k

@JorgeCastro if I had an issue with you being evil, you'd have me complaining to the mods :P
@JorgeCastro while I on occasion like it when people tell me that they reject my edits or what not, sometimes its just not necessary

4:13 PM
Jorge Castro? Evil? Ha!

@JorgeCastro: however, i would rather have you NOT tell me right now, and only tell me when I get edit privs

I'm abstaining from Area51 from now on :D

I evily stole this guy's Firefox 4 answer for the greater good.
However I gave him a 100 rep bounty as a consolation prize

lol

see :D?
Jorge could never be evil muhahaha

4:14 PM
ugh, i should NEVER have had the drinks i had last night... i ended up with this massive headache >.>

LOL - your the second person I've spoken to in 24hrs with a hangover
and she said the same thing :D
(and I did the same thing - lol'd)

lolol

Oli
Hmm
I smell evil afoot.

@Oli hai

Oli
Keep calm and carry on

4:16 PM
@Oli hey :D

@Oli there's two evils, myself, and @Jorge being evil :p

there is no evil afoot here ;)

pretends not to have bad intentions

Oli
We'll see...

4:18 PM
:P

@RolandTaylor area51 is more than a little bit annoying.

that ^, is evil
@jgbelacqua ikr
I was told I wasn't nice for not replying to a guy's distorted view of my beliefs

@RolandTaylor WHY would you bring that DESPICABLE EVIL into here?
:P
@jgbelacqua Indeed

@EvilPhoenix lol :D

4:20 PM
@RolandTaylor Yeah, I find the whole concept of people who are high-rep in some area are taken to be authorities on everything else, strange and counter-productive.

exactly

@RolandTaylor so obviously, you must not be nice, because, well, someone disagreed.

apparen't they didn't notice your kitten

in a nutshell - that is my problem with science these days
it's gone from observation>documentation>okay_this_is_how_it_works_but_we_might_be_wrong_later - to take_my_theory_and_swallow_it_and_don't_ever_ask_me_if_it's_possibly_wrong!!!!

4:23 PM
I don't have a problem with science, but ...

go.theregister.com/feed/www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/21/… on another note... I think I'll be moving to the Netherlands :D
and back on topic now

yeah, it's pretty hard to express things when it's so easy to generate knee-jerk responses

@Oli and @MarcoCeppi I will likely update/edit the Firefox 4 question later today to be basically near final for tomorrow, it seems to be getting all the traffic anyway so I figured it would be easier to update it than to make a new one.

jazz?

@jgbelacqua well I don't have a problem with "science" - I have a problem with the "scientists"
@jgbelacqua yeah, jazz

4:24 PM
@JorgeCastro Acknowledged

@jorge cool -- are they getting merged?

I'm just going to rename it
and ask Coulson to delete his.
the original person edited their out of date one enough to be useful, so might as well roll with it!

groovy.
we are getting lots of crazy near-duplicate questions lately....
and natty's not even here

not surprising - most people don't bother to search

Or read the suggestions that pop up

4:28 PM
@MarcoCeppi sup

and that :P

@MarcoCeppi that's the weird part

@jgbelacqua We try to hard to make it so easy for them :P

I usually just start asking instead of search, first ... the suggestions are usually good

@MarcoCeppi and they try hard to ignore it - typical of us end users :D

4:30 PM
I like dupes
they solidify the dupe searching and the google sign postage
it's the offtopic and bug report ones that annoy me
"Will Unity have unicorns?"

I think in some cases, the grasp of English is so tenuous that they just can't process it all, so they ask anyway. fair enough, but then the questions are usually difficult to comprehend as well.

offtopic ones are fed to ~the unicorns
@JorgeCastro Will it?

why does unity suck so much?

please say yes?!

Nope

4:31 PM
=( cries in a corner

my system doesn't boot with the alpha!!!!

holding a teddy bear

hands @RolandTaylor a tissue

@EvilPhoenix why thank you :D

4:31 PM
Will unity be forked and rewritten in Haskell, Scheme and Perl?
>:)

Geez... I'm 2 points away from 3K. And I've just been editing, not answering.
@RolandTaylor and why hasn't it!!?!?! linux is about choice!
canonical is clearly evil.

@jgbelacqua you max out at 1k via editing btw.

@jorge I know, it just suits me more at the moment.

@jgbelacqua I agree
starts a protest group to protest unity being written in C++
Hai @GeorgeEdison

I'm sure I'll get a couple of votes before natty shows up, even if I continue slacking on answers

4:33 PM
@RolandTaylor Hey.

release week was fun last time
the site was really hopping

It sure was.
I'm still trying to decide whether I should do a clean install for Natty... or an upgrade.

I can't wait to upgrade to Natty :P
if only my laptop screen could get replaced lol

@EvilPhoenix waves Lots of signatures so far

@jgbelacqua I voted on some of your content - good stuff - so deserved my vote (honestly)

4:41 PM
@MarcoCeppi ...and even Mark Shuttleworth.
(Ya, it's in there.)

@GeorgeEdison Well, we can't confirm it's him

What... no IP lookup? :)

checks

@MarcoCeppi Indeed, i kinda gave up checking since I wasnt around lately :P

@GeorgeEdison Wow, it's a Canonical IP
Maybe it is him :)

4:43 PM
@MarcoCeppi Probably. I don't see why it wouldn't be.

@MarcoCeppi it was Bat Man, he told me.

^---- Still active!

@RolandTaylor Oh, just poped back in. Thanks!

@jgbelacqua np

4:51 PM
hi @EvilPhoenix and co!

@RolandTaylor then you might check that question, it seems he's using a USB 3.0 expansion card in his system to get 3.0 capabilities, but then can't get a USB 3.0 hard drive to have recognized partitions when using an actual USB 3.0 port :/

Q: Does Ubuntu support USB 3.0?

sudobashI have a Western Digital My Book 3.0 - 1 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive, and I wanted to know if it would work on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

5:10 PM
@RolandTaylor Yes.

5:37 PM
@EvilPhoenix you're in pittsburgh?

jeez sometimes I really hate reading the comments on OMG! Ubuntu!, actually skip that on any blog post or article ... maybe I should get rid of them with AdBlock

hah, which ones?

well currently the ones on the Ubuntu one control panel but I kind hate all of em

right, added a block rule :)
now my world is all fine again, what I don't see doesn't exist :D

5:45 PM
Who's in pittsburgh other than me?!
puffs out his chest real big

@JorgeCastro I mean seriously ... the U1 control panel interface is just awesome still it is not enough ... I wonder what they expect, Unicorns?

@lazyPower did you ever get a chance to try FBuntu for me?

what is Fbuntu?

@fluteflute not yet sir. I will be checking it out tonight when i get home from class

A little program that adds a Facebook entry to the Messaging Menu

5:48 PM
@fluteflute i was at work most of the day yesterday

oh no facebook :/

@fluteflute so you settled on FBuntu? or is still technically Fbuntu?

@OctavianDamiean it's like marmite (you hate it or love it)
@lazyPower I've changed everything to FBuntu - makes it a little clearer what it is I think.
I was contemplating a PiTiVi style FBuNTu....

marmite?
vegemite?

5:52 PM
> This distinctive taste is reflected in the British company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it." It is similar to the Australian Vegemite and Swiss Cenovis.
then it's hate it :D

So in (UK) English saying something is "like marmite" means it's a bit controversial :)

hateList.add(marmite);

Octavian.reset(HateList);
snicker

ew nice, passed the 6k mark on SO. :D grumpiness--
