A sequel to Boatmurdered.

Who hasn't finished SC2 yet in this room? :D
In other news

11:58 AM
:158825 I haven't bought it. Just bought SC1 and still playing through the zerg campaign
:158827 Congratulations Jon Skeet, I mean @tzenes

12:28 PM
In other news: I created that tag :P
SC1 is a pain after you played the beta of SC2

:158831 I was just asking because the SC2 ending spolier is right there in plain sight :/

I'm not really offended by spoilers
as my wife says
if the book isn't worth reading after you know the ending, it's not worth reading in the first place

very true
though the Sixth Sense isn't nearly as good once you know Bruce Willis is a ghost...
you're like: ok, what's so special? I already know he's dead
though once you see the ending you realize they did a very good job of keeping that in the middle
In other news @badp, I finished the SC2 campaign yesterday
then got my ass handed to me in the multiplayer quite often
I need some buddies from here, so I can tag along and get used to the building orders and strategies again...

:158866 I actually picked that up pretty early, but it is one of the better twists
I think Unbreakable is better for keeping you on the edge of your seat

12:47 PM
Good afternoon all

dag mevrouw :)

I don't have SC2 and don't plan on getting it :)

you can't argue about taste, so good for you!

How goes it?

depends on what it refers to

12:48 PM
:158881 Don't like RTS or just contrarian?

Uh... GSE and your general day!

I struggle to finish RTS tutorials

if you mean my quest to program something crappy, then meeeeh
the weather here is awesome today, so yeaaaah!

It is very nice today
welcome change from the crappy rain the past few weeks

indeed, finally it feels like summer again
does anyone know what weather it is in California in October?

12:57 PM
Not as painfully stupid hot as in August but still warm

great, then at least I'll have a little bit of summer

Yeah definitely
NL summer this year sucked

the only two weeks that it was hot, it was too hot
it was like 36C in our apartment all day long, not very nice if you're trying to sleep

Yeah, that sucked
Our living room wall is a balcony door with double paned glass, then another 2 windows that fill half the distance from floor to ceiling. We face the south, so we get the sun during summer in our living room during the hottest part of the day.

awh great with a big magnifying glass to heat the room :P

1:19 PM
haha basically

would a subplot be able to plot subplots? (how philosophical)

1:49 PM
shameless self-plug, but that program looks awesome:

A: How can I remap the numpad keys to select conversation responses?

Ivo FlipseTry GlovePIE It's a program that's actually used to map things like MIDI controllers, Wii-motes and PS3 controllers to actual keyboard commands, but naturally also works with regular keyboard remapping! Note: It looks scary when you run it, but under View you can set it to GUI. There you can...

it's like AHK for peripherals
this might actually allow you to use a Guitar Hero guitar with Frets on Fire

There's an adapter that lets you do that, for the PS2 ones at least
Wasn't expensive, I bought one a few years ago, it's a USB to PS2 adapter
Gonna go play some Rock Band now actually, later all :)

Oak
2:21 PM
@Ivo it does look cool

it almost makes me buy a wii mote to try it out
just because it looks fun :P

Oh that, I've played HL2 with a wiimote

did it work?
I mean, did you feel you could aim at the screen?
with proper calibration, it should be doable

more or less

Q: Using Wii remote and other controllers for PC games

Nick MeyerIs there a device or adapter (similar to the one asked about here for the Xbox 360) to allow me to use my Wii remote and classic controller to control PC games?

2:25 PM
Okay, so release date questions are bad because we can't know
Questions about unreleased games however are fine?

ah there's another answer that mentions how awesome GlovePie is
its pretty grey area
but like with rock band, you want to know which version to buy or is compatible with your gear

Oak
But nobody can know for sure until it's released

but other than that, I see very little value in these questions
well, there's E3 and press releases
so it's not like there's no solid info available
but it's not solid until there is something material, else it's just speculation
and I dislike the latter

...same for release date questions
if I wasn't sure that question was getting OMG-WTF-closed, I would've posted my comment as an answer and spared my close vote.

:159144 that should be our 404 image

2:35 PM
:159148 it's not gaming enough :-/

someone should hire that guy (Johnny Lee)
and it would be fun for SU, but I guess it's too offensive
meeh @Oak answered faster than me :P but in the end it's the same

Oak
Answered what?

the meta question above
I was too busy watching Johnny showing me how to make a digital whiteboard myself

Oak
Oh yea that

Oak
I can never remember,

users can see their deleted answers but not their deleted questions?

Downvoter
:159162 yes, but not from the profile (answers)

@Oak what's the point of waiting before deleting if the user can see the comment either way?

Downvoter
they need to navigate to the question that has their deleted answer, and they'll see it there

because they won't know where to find it @ArdaXi
exactly

Oak
Hi Juan

Oak
2:46 PM
But @Ivo they CAN see it, if they care

Oak
So maybe a day of waiting is too much

I find that they generally don't care and/or learn it quickly enough from looking at more questions
I'm impressed by the page views on that Zerg question btw

:159173 Link?

link to what @CRoss

the Zerg question?

ah @JuanManuel linked it in his answer on your question
(i think, or you did)
but the easiest way it to search on the site with: views:5000
then you see everything that has more than 5000 views

Q: How to play StarCraft 2 offline?

Wavy CrabHow to I play StarCraft 2 offline? When I start StarCraft 2 offline (my network connection disabled), it prompts me for my Battle.net account name. how's life Juan?

today we came into work at 6 am to deploy to production

so... sleepy

I hate pushing to prod
you have to spend all day making sure it didn't break the build and even then there is no guarantee.

3:52 PM
yeah, we had 3 hours where customers couldn't make a purchase

not my fault though, but stressful anyways

ouch, that's a long time

Q: A hacked Modern Warfare 2 server made my rank level 70. Can I undo it?

MrVimesI ended up in a hacked server. One of the hacks was - if you die by your own hand (such as falling off a skyscraper in my case) your rank (at your current prestige level) becomes 70. While this is advantagous in that it partially unlocked things I wanted (ninja pro, claymores) so that I could ea...

not really. he was asking about rolling back, I'm asking to reset completely
@ArdaXi do you think the difference is sufficient? because I doubt I'd get the answer I wanted reliably by simply putting a bounty on the other question.

I"m pretty sure you can't reset achievements
if that is the case I would say the difference is sufficient
since the reset achievements question would have information in it, that you wouldn't want in an answer to the hacked question

yeah I basically want to open the game and be on first prestige, no achievements etc
as though I just bought it

Is it possible to connect to hacked servers legitly?

well if you know people who hack servers you can always party up with them
and it's not against the rules for you to join
I believe with MW2 the point at which you get flagged is when you are either botting or RUNNING the hacked server yourself
but I may be wrong
does anyone know if a normal razor scooter will die if I am more than 143 pounds?
(with my backpack (laptop, textbooks, lunch, brick, live chicken) I'm close to 200)

5:02 PM
it might
its rated at 143 for a reason...

yeah but I see people my size riding them too without breaking so I'm curious

oh actually reading your question better, it does kind of look like a dup

:159321 I'm just saying, if you can claim you accidentally joined this hacked server (or if you did) you can just put up the MW2 equivalent of a mod flag and get support :)

well now that the answer on the other question has been modified to answer my question as well as the other one, its just a matter of pragmatics, but I don't think it's a dupe.
@badp well MW2 doesn't have an active support team, I don't think
it's pretty close to vaporware in fact
I may be wrong

:159337 After all it was just released, um, three months ago?
that's what you get for playing old games :P

5:09 PM
well almost a year, but the IW kinda went ballistic

Aren't you talking about Modern Warfare 2? The infamous game which has PC-specific features like mouse support?
I could've sworn it was released more recently than a year

it was available christmas last year
november 10 2009 to be precise
but it's kinda ridiculous. Activision's name is not prominent on MW2 and with IW essentially done for, they are not going to invest in fixing bugs or even guarantee that MW2 will continue to work for the next 5 years and they won't get the direct bad press

"5 years"?

yeah. there is talk about ditching the current free to play once you own it and charging a $5 a month subscription
to access the IWnet server

oh, you meant "$5/year" then? :P

5:17 PM
well, no I actually mean that they don't guarantee that it will be functional in 5 years

(I was kidding.)

oh
anyways. off to design a turing machine that decides the collatz conjecture

Have fun

:159715 I don't think defining the conjecture is the hard part

avoiding third order costs will increase the efficiency of his algorithm

well @tzenes tomorrow I have to present some of the results, will be interesting to hear what they say
made a fancy powerpoint, so the results look nicer :P

coolioes
hey I had a problem with my bounty

I ended up going with a very good solution: the simplest by far
divide the paws in left and right by simply splitting the plate in two halves

7:10 PM
I attempted to assign the bounty for this question: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/6252/… and it said it was assigned, but then today I got a message saying, that it was "automatically" assigned and the person I assigned it to received only half the amount

the front and left are divided because they were alternating in order

does that work if the dog has short legs?

the bounty just assigned the standard bounty, because it only remembered you wanted to assign it (I reckon)

it said automatically, and if I remember correctly, when a bounty expires without being assigned it is automatically assigned to the highest voted answer for half the amount

I don't think the dogs leg length is a major influence, the two biggest problems would be if the put down their paws in a straight line. Humans do this when they start running, the feet are placed on a line, rather than wide apart

7:13 PM
nm, I just remembered you have temporal information

Q: How does the bounty system work?

A. Rex What is a bounty? What is the "Featured" tab on the homepage? How can I search for questions that have a bounty attached? How do I start a bounty? When can I start a bounty? How long is the bounty period? How do I award a bounty? Can I award a bounty to my own answer? What happens if there's no ...

I was worried about the front and back triggering the same spot, but since you know time you can solve it.

well that would be the other 'problem'
it's easy to solve, but now it's ridiculously easy, since they alternate in time and space

right

so once I split them in left and right, I just have a row of front, back, front, back, front

7:14 PM
temporal data makes it trivial

but overlapping is solvable, because I know which was the first

right

but if they start to cross paws, then there's no knowing with a plain algorithm

right

then I need to check for things like orientation of the paw, the toes will probably be inwards for instance

7:15 PM
or if they walk backwards

and I know the front legs tend to have 60% of the weight

interesting

well the person who did the measurements luckily wasn't an idiot
so she did a very nice job of recording which paw was the first and make sure they walked straight and with a constant velocity
well the weight ratio is tricky to use, since they plan to use it on lame dogs
I'm sure there will be dogs that have it backwards
> What happens if there's no answer after the bounty period?
What happens if I feel my question is still unanswered?
What is automatic awarding?
**At the end of the bounty period, if the bounty starter has not manually awarded the bounty, eligible answers can be automatically awarded half the bounty amount. The criteria for an answer to be eligible for automatic awarding are as follows:**

The answer must be given after the bounty was started
The answer must have a score of at least +2
If two or more eligible answers have the same score, the oldest answer is awarded the bounty.
I'm going to refactor my code the coming week, so it doesn't consist of 50% duplicating code and put some things in functions
then try and store stuff in a small DB and try to apply it to all measurements
which will probably make me run into tons of strange problems
and I want to divide the paw into 5 subgroups, one for each toe and the fatpad at the back
shouldn't be too hard I reckon
I would just look for local maximums, draw a small circle around it, tweak the size so they don't overlap and make sure they all have the same size. I'll just ignore the pressure that's left behind

What if the dog stumbles??
(I use double punctuation as a way to indicate the joking nature of the message.)

then the measurement shouldn't be stored :P
well your quite right actually
but you shouldn't try to program around user mistakes :P

7:23 PM
Well, I'm just trying to find use cases, I guessed this was going to be eventually used for some kind of dog rehab program

yeah, it is

...or a wii blockbuster :D
"the balance board dog edition!"

sorry had to deal with something

I tried to convince my boss to lend the system to game universities, so they could design some rehab/balance games

it looks pretty good

7:25 PM
so you can evaluate a kids stability during rehab

ideally you aren't going to be able to cover every case on the onset
but eventually you should be able to program around it

off course a wii-balance board can do it too, but it's miles off accuracy wise
yeah, I just need to look carefully about error-catching
that I program it in such a way that it just continues if an error is raised
sadly, my programming experience lacks in that field
as with including a simple GUI to run it without python
but @badp we've measured about 35 healthy dogs now, with different weight classes to see how the system holds up

cool
How's programming with scipy?

then we can increase the number to get a nice database/baseline of healthy dogs
and from there compare lame dogs with healthy ones, before and after surgery
it's fine, though this is mostly numpy and matplotlib (not that the difference matters)
if I manage to properly divide the paws into 5 subgroups, then I should consider writing an article about it, since it's pretty ground-breaking for veterinary research :P

one per "finger" plus the "palm"?

7:33 PM
yeah
most published studies at the moment are done with a competing device, which lacks the resolution to really divide the paws in a proper way

awesome!

though really this work is just a nice way to experiment with Python so that in the future I might be a bit more proficient

Hm.... anyone know if titans outside your walls will go away eventually? (Dwarf Fortress)
I have a hairy, eight-legged giant sauropod with deadly spittle problem.
It's already slain Iteb Momuzakir the Cat. :(

man I keep getting my ass handed to me in 1v1
I seem to have an issue with air units
regardless of the class

@Jav I don't think so, but I'm not sure
@Ivo game?

@IvoFlipse I got bumped down to Gold last night. I'm winning a lot more now. ;)

sc2
I'm in bronze
near the top, but don't see myself pushing through quickly
had a bad loss streak

What race do you play?

11:03 PM
random

best way to tell if you're going to get bumped up is to check the rank of the players you're against
that might be part of your problem...

well I had one protos player who was insanely fast
I was focusing on getting zealots quick
but had to pick something just when the match started
he ended up coming into my base when I had 2 zealots, he had three or four
must have skipped on some of the probes

how many gateways did you have?

:160378 Same goes for being bumped down. I knew my days in Plat were numbered when I was only being matched up against Gold and Silver players. :( B.net is a bitch sometimes.

I had two
but I guess I built too many probes

11:05 PM
how many probes?

I should tweak my number of workers
no idea

well there is no reason to stop building probes
but if you had 2 zealots by the time you had 30 probes, you have a problem
or if you had 10 probes that's also a problem
it should be 16-18
do you have the replay?/

I actually thought I was maxed out on speed, but I missed a couple of seconds at the beginning
nope
but I'm going to start saving some

its usually helpful

but that's for tomorrow, I need to get up in 5 hours, so best off to bed now!
I'll open a question when I understand my problem a little better

11:08 PM
sure thing

I think I had too many probes

if you have too many probes, the issue is probably not that you're building probes, but that you're not building enough Zealots
