12:15 PM
There's another 150,000 ash trees on hold until we know what's happening... Must be over half a million now
(admittedly these were all 'transplants' for hedging so very small and low value)

Look what I found:
apparently, how to make a bomb, source: cracked.com/…

@HackToHell Needs more mega

He is mega sized
He is being stupid launching it again
Is there any firefox extension that allows me to right click and copy a link (like in chrome) ?

@HackToHell: I think he dosen't really care any more

All he wants is money, he had sooo many supercars

@HackToHell: I personally think the actions of the american government were somewhat heavyhanded in the respect
who dosen't want money?

12:51 PM
US government prolly took him down because someone bribed them :P
Points accusing hand at music and gaming industry

yes, and they sorta convinced the NZ government to tackle his flabby ass with a SWAT team
eh, parts of the gaming industry are fine
I actually would fell guilty about game piracy
music piracy.. less so, assuming I did it ;p

I wouldn't feel bad about any piracy at all. If I commit a crime, I better have a good reason so that I won't feel guilty afterwards

Is wondering if piracy is a crime

O.o
Piracy is paramount to stealing...

blah, gaming giants are rich enough :P

12:55 PM
@HackToHell it still doesn't make it right to steal..

You are making it sound worse :'(

Meow

That is because it is terrible... and you will burn for your transgressions!

Most of the games I buy, i get a lot of enjoyment from, and tend to buy from places like GOG or Steam on sales ;p
and indie games

12:56 PM
How is everybody here who is from USA?

the music industry just has had a record of opposing innovation of any sort

Anyone from NY? Stay safe!

Isn't it over ?

@JourneymanGeek A bill that makes it illegal to sell your collection of records that you bought?

12:57 PM
records?
what are we in, the 70s?

@JourneymanGeek There must be some who stil have those. But I namely meant music CDs.
@HackToHell 48-core chip that can run 48 apps or processes concurrently?

You can do that with a single core

For some reason, althought I have added another shipping address in eBay it still defaults to my current location without allowing me to choose different shipping address. What is going on?

A task is split among 48 cores

@HackToHell Yes but why not 48-core chip provided you run 48 apps ATM? Is that accomplishable?

1:02 PM
Yes

Ghnn. First time properly using Windows 8 today - it's going to take some getting used to.

@JourneymanGeek well the records companies are just retarded.. that is the one good thing Apple does, fight the record companies..

Does anyone know how to edit ISO's without extracting and packing again ?

@HackToHell is that possible?

Nothing is impossible

1:13 PM
@HackToHell sure it is... it is impossible for me to get some work done for the rest of the week.

Bob
@HackToHell What, you mean like the built in context menu option "Copy Link Location"? :P

@Bob No, copy link address
It shows up in chrome

Bob
@HackToHell ..what?
"Copy Link Location" is what you're looking for.

That's for Firefox right?

yeah
Is preparing screeny
Wait for it
I want that in firefox

1:18 PM
That's Chrome
You have Copy Link Location in Firefox.
Which is the same thing

faceplam
I never tried it

Bob
@Joshua More copyright infringement. Unlike the 'you wouldn't steal a <item>' ads...

I though copy link location would copy the location of the link, i.e the page at which I am on currently

@Bob what? where?

Bob
copyright is the right to copy, simply put. theft is taking property.. doesn't apply so much to data where it's not 'taken'

1:20 PM
:)

Bob
bleh, depends on your jurisdiction's laws

@Bob isn't information the property of the beholder, or in this case the the programmer/artist?

Bob
but (computer) piracy is generally prosecuted under copyright law

@Joshua Every goddamn thing is copied

Bob
> The actus reus of theft is usually defined as an unauthorized taking, keeping or using of another's property which must be accompanied by a mens rea of dishonesty and/or the intent to permanently deprive the owner or the person with rightful possession of that property or its use.

1:23 PM
Well.. I sorta think that aspects of copyright law is silly. I pay for stuff cause that means the people who make it will be able to make more stuff I like ;p

Bob
again, depends on your jurisdiction's laws

but then again, I'm a dog person who thinks the world is too damned complex

Bob
but with piracy, you're denying them the right to profit (copyright), not its use (theft)
also, IANAL
and how the heck do these things seem quite clear, yet F/OSS licenses confuse the heck out of me?
@HackToHell mount as read/write

World is complex !
@Bob How do I do that in 7 ? needs to reinstall grub

Bob
1:26 PM
not sure if you can modify single files or need to 'burn' to the virtual drive, though

Thanks

@HackToHell there really is no point in arguing about it... the simple fact is, that the law makes it illegal to copy intellectual property without the property owners permission... Whether you like it or not is not relevant, and in my opinion people that are against copyright are just people that are to lazy to get jobs... and just don't want to pay other people for their work.

Bob
@HackToHell ..reading the comments, apparently does nto allow writing to ISOs -__-

~_~
@Joshua Based on your perception of reality
It's what you consider bad
I do not regret it

Bob
this isn't morality
it's legality
moral or not, it is illegal

1:30 PM
@HackToHell lol, so when you are arrested, dragged in front of a judge, are you going to say "Well based on your perception what I did was illegal, but I don't think it was" I doubt that is going to be a valid legal argument...

Rules are meant to be broken

and the judge is still going to throw you in jail

@HackToHell Bent, not broken :P

The rules are not strict enough in my country :P
@HaydnWVN you are not supposed to say that :P

@HackToHell Where do you live? Canada?

1:31 PM
India.

Ind = India or Indiana?

GMT +5.30

@Bob +1

ok + means it's America, so educated guess = Indiana!?

Wut?
+ means it is in the east.

Bob
1:33 PM
lol
I'm UTC+11 at the moment... definitely not America
they're a day behind

@America is always a day behind...

Fus!
Ro!
Dah!

washes out @allquixotic's mouth with roman leather tanning agents.

1:52 PM
@JourneymanGeek crafts a sword out of a hunk of metal and some leather strips and beats @JourneymanGeek over the head with it broadside

this is wierd
my phone rang twice, unknown number , all I heard was a low beep and the call got cut off

@JourneymanGeek maybe a paniced Hurricane Sandy survivor with their phone on 1% battery regained consciousness in the basement of a flooded building and dialed a random number because their touchscreen was hosed, and you were the only one they could reach, and they tried to talk but their phone died

It's the FBI, they know that you are torrenting !

i think my theory is more depressing

They also know that you are an Anonymous memeber
@allquixotic It certainly is ;p

1:57 PM
@HackToHell: why would the call get cut off then?
@allquixotic: long distance? that WOULD suck

They had problems triangulating (I know it does not work like that)
This is the best explanation I can think of :P

solar flares!
they tried to dial a local number and it got sent to me
cause of the illuminati
... music... finally

O_o

has nearly everything working again, almost
need to restore the windows 8 install from a backup
and beat that kubuntu install into working

don't beat kubuntu :( it likes you

2:01 PM
kubuntu rocks !
Think of it as a kat
no beating

I want it to work
@HackToHell: I had to scare off a particularly agressive cat the other day
same one that twaped my dog on the back for no reason was hissing and walking towards us. stomped my feet to scare it off.

yin yang.

@allquixotic: I've installed *buntus off unetbootin running on the same drive, different partition
for some reason it didn't work this time
need to go find a USB key to get it it running
the same day my windows 8 system crapped out, and I accidentally formatted my storage drive ;)
I got NOTHING done today

@HackToHell you're back to being a cat! yay :)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek what happened there?

2:13 PM
lol
donno. VHD install crapped out and won't boot

Bob
lol
tried bcdboot?

it mounts fine, so I got the data out
oh, the drive got corrupted

Bob
if you're (un)lucky, you might even get the random dual bootloader! :P

scandisk gets triggered, I can't be bothered
I really have better things to do than firefighting. I'll recover from the spare copy of the VHD, or reinstall
engadget.com/2012/11/01/… gotta love the brits
"No, Do it again LIKE YOU MEAN IT, and if you don't its the blackboard kiddo!"

Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek Watching the comments appear :P

2:22 PM
Dang
I just installed my first copy of gollum

Bob
two weeks...

I'm liking it!

Bob
we all know that's a lie :P
if it were true, heck, what the hell are they paying the website maintainers? :P
@OliverSalzburg gollum?

@Bob The GitHub wiki engine

Bob
ah
nice

2:23 PM
Now I'll finally have a proper, private wiki with Markdown support... yes :D

@OliverSalzburg is there a StyleBot-esque externsion for FF?

A couple of hours ago, I wanted to edit a page in our (MediaWiki) wiki... this is the result :P
@JaredTritsch Stylish

Bob
@OliverSalzburg markdown to mediawiki? :P

@OliverSalzburg: thats neat. github backend + your own server?

@Bob I did that for a while, it's a pain

Bob

@JourneymanGeek Github isn't involved at all. It's just their project

totally DIY, me likey

@Bob Tried that as well. Horrible garbage

Bob
lol

2:26 PM
@JourneymanGeek Feel free to give it a test-run until I find out how to lock it down :D

@OliverSalzburg What does it do ?
@allquixotic :)

@HackToHell It's a wiki
That's the project
Quite the run to set it all up in Apache

ah ok, thanks

got my first good question badge <3
@OliverSalzburg: I can set it up once I get my systems reorganised ;)

zoot
Can a mod invite someone into the chat who has 1 rep?
(I'm asking in general, although I still need to request that a mod actually do so if it is indeed feasible)

2:37 PM
hi there, a short question:
Which hardware would you recommend for a Home-Media-Server? The problem I face is: On the one hand, it should be energy efficient, on the other it should have enough power to transcode full hd mkvs to mp4 live and without lags (streaming server) inside a virtual machine. I have a feeling that an Atom won't cut it.

Harddrives will pretty certain be WesternDigital Red with 4x3TB, so basically what I need is: CPU, PSU, Board, RAM (and maybe a tape drive!)

nevermind XD
@Megge Hi

hi :)

you want to transcode media "live" without lag in a virtual machine? O_o

Bob
@Megge Why a VM?

2:38 PM
need both windows and unix machines for some services
@allquixotic Jeah, I currently have a dual core with about 2.5 ghz, and it's more-or-less lag free
but every 1 minute or so a short delay occurs :/

How do you ship to different address on eBay?

(using mediatomb with i guess its called "mencoder")

@allquixotic That's what I was thinking. This will be a problem.

Bob
@Megge I would recommend you find equivalents for the other platform, not run a VM

@Megge if you're doing full virtualization (what other kind is there, running Windows on Linux or Linux on Windows...) you will need VT-x and EPT at a bare minimum, and maybe customize the scheduling priority of the guest.

2:40 PM
@Bob there definitely are none :/

Bob
running a VM is not gonna help with energy efficiency, for starters

@Megge: what specific windows services?

it'd also depend on which VM you use... Xen with good paravirtualization should work well

Currently I am using Xen

okay, yeah, Xen has low*er* overhead than the competition

2:41 PM
@allquixotic Tobit Server (it's a mail server we kinda have to run)

what kind of dual core do you have now?

some old amd with around 2.5 ghz per core
I don't know it exactly
tobit.com/davidfx12 and there really is no way around that, sadly

Bob
clock rate doesn't really mean anything without knowing the architecture :P

"some old amd" --> it either doesn't have VT-x or it doesn't have AMD-V (or both, lol)
your guest performance should absolutely skyrocket if you get an Intel CPU of Nehalem gen or later

Bob
@allquixotic VT-x is Intel specific, isn't it?

2:42 PM
ill fetch proc, wait a sec

^ that

no, VT-x is not Intel specific, pretty sure

there's a an AMD equivilent to it
same way VT-D and IOMMU
are the same thing

yeah, we don't need VT-D or IOMMU for this workload though

i a pretty sure that core has that virtualization thingy :D

Bob
2:43 PM
@JourneymanGeek not saying there's no equivalent, just saying VT-x itself (or at least the name)

there are two "virtualization thingy"s
think of it as "generation 1" and "generation 2"

flags : fpu de tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr mca cmov pat clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt 3dnowext 3dnow pni hypervisor cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+

lolz
so old

runs like a champ!

2:44 PM
no ssse3 or sse4.x or amd-v
... if that thing "runs like a champ" you will be blown away by an Ivy Bridge Core i5 (to say nothing of a Core i7)

:D

Bob
@Megge svm is AMD-V

VT-X + EPT in a guest will make your head spin
oh, svm is AMD-V? interesting... i guess AMD was first to the AMD-V/EPT race
still, throughput of that old Athlon is nuffin' vs. an Ivy

jeah, thats for sure
that thing must be like 5 years old
but well - it still does nearly everything i need
even with 8 vms running parallel :D

Bob
an i3 with hardware virtualisation might actually be enough, assuming you don't need anything graphical

2:46 PM
jup, i don't even have a gpu plugged in atm
and if i do its a radeon 1550 :D

Bob
IIRC there's a performance penalty on Sandy/Ivy Bridge CPUs if you use the onboard GPU intensively

(though I think a good chunk of my systems are of similar vintage. They do OK. Still drooling over the Ivies ;p)

Bob
though that was more heat or something
@JourneymanGeek Wait for the Haswells :P

i wont have any things running there using a gpu

2:48 PM
@Bob there isn't a real performance penalty on the CPU side if you use the GPU

@Bob: I really need a proper gaming box

the GPU is a separate "section" of the die

Bob
@allquixotic yea, probably was heat I was remembering

maybe a windows server but a cpu should manage the basic gui too

Bob
I can say intensive GPU use really heats the chip up
hit 100 degrees C here
never gone that high with pure CPU use

2:49 PM
if you don't need any GPU functionality, you may or may not be able to get better results out of a Sandy Bridge-E system though; but the cost will run up
Sandy Bridge-E is Sandy Bridge scaled up and without the on-board GPU
I think the high end SNB-E is faster than IVB-mainstream
because there's no IVB-E until 2013

budget isn't much of an issue here (50€ more or less aren't that important, that stuff should just work smoothly, that's the main point)
the most important thing really is energy saving and being able to deliver transcoding

well, Ivy Bridge is head and shoulders over Sandy Bridge or anything AMD has, in terms of power savings

unless you overclock em

Ivy really excels at energy savings in terms of not burning energy for idle periods

2:51 PM
it has an on-CPU voltage regulator

I really won't overclock my production system :D

Bob
QuickSync could help with transcoding, assuming your software can use it

woa that's nice :D

if your CPU is busy 100% of the time, it's going to burn a lot of energy no matter what, but Ivy is completely innovative in terms of having a much better energy budget when it isn't fully utilized

90% of the time the cpu will be below 5%

2:52 PM
idle desktop-grade Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770K burns an impressively low amount of energy at like 5-10% CPU
it's incredible

more or less flipping between 0-1% currently
even with that pre-stoneage thing

lol
@Megge: the system I use for a good chunk of things, including virtualisation is a c2duo with only 2 gigs of ram I pulled out a dumpster ;)
never underestimate senior citizens

jeah, as I said, in terms of performance i just need a little bit more than I have now

@Megge so I would recommend you look at the Core i5 or Core i7 brands of Ivy Bridge (4-digit CPU number after the i5/i7 starts with "3") and go from there -- that narrows down your search results on motherboards to Ivy Bridge-compatible mobos, too
they're very affordable, even on the i7 end

hmm, matx may be an option motherboard wise
(unless you need all those extra PCIe ports)

2:55 PM
also you'll have the GPU if your requirements ever change, OR if you want to try GPU-accelerated video encoding

I think the cheapest i5 will be enough

you're probably right

Who has Asus TF300 tablet?

@Megge If you're running a mailserver and looking at storage (tape drive lols)

@Megge: I THINK there may be a GPUless core i5

2:57 PM
then why is energy efficency a consideration

so better to check

People say it is not worth buying since there are a few apps available for it atm.

@JourneymanGeek I THINK you're wrong, but I'd have to confirm. I think all the IVBs on the market now come with GPU

@allquixotic: does not hurt to check.
Better I'm wrong, than to come home with a processor that isn't entirely suitable for the usecase in mind ;)

@HaydnWVN It's a mailserver for like 3 people and its running 24/7.

2:58 PM
also, if you want ridiculously low power consumption, take a look at Calxeda's ARM servers: calxeda.com (disclaimer: x86 Windows virtualized on ARM hardware will be dog slow)

lol
@Megge: why not split it up
have the mailserver running on the atom, transcoding rig powered up as needed?

nearly every service has to be available nearly all the time
mh

two separate rigs is more inefficient than one rig

there will also be filesharing

@allquixotic: The P versions have their GPU disabled.

2:59 PM
and a database running

@allquixotic: the ARM space will be getting more interesting soon

because you have to have all the other motherboard, ethernet, wifi, etc stuff plugged in

@Megge personal or professional? Sounds more professional - build the costings for a general processor into your budget/build and then any savings for using a newer processor will be a benefit, but don't use power consumption as a cost decider when trying to optimise virtual performance.

@allquixotic: true, I never think of that so ;)

personal server but semi professional level

2:59 PM
@Dennis disabled is not the same as the GPU not being there... if it's disabled then it's probably from the reject bin on the fab line, where they find the GPU is DOA, so instead of trashing the unit they sell it with GPU disabled
