@prime Excuse me?

You don't need to know.

@prime It was just a simple question, but it's ok.

user19161
@prime I now get the feeling that you are very rude.

user19161
At first I thought this might be due to your command of the language. But now I think it is not.

7:05 AM
I'm not rude
I'm a good.

@prime Your answers do sound rude though.

I'm not here to argue with you, rather i'm here to improve my English and learning English

user19161
See?

@prime You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I have never said I wanted to argue.

user19161
OMG, my temperature is rising...

7:09 AM
Go and bath, and the temperature will low
temperature will low or temparature will lower ? which one is correct?

user19161
OK, if this is the way you are going to treat other chat users, I am afraid I will have to ignore you.

@WillHunting There's an old tradition here, if your temperature is rising, put lemon under your armpits.

user19161
@ChairOTP OMG.

@WillHunting I know I know, it sounds a bit weird, but it does work.

The corollary to this is - think twice about accepting lemons from ChairOTP.

7:12 AM
What is the meaning of This economic growth parallels developments in the franchise sector.
franchise?
I can't understand the meaning of franchise
Can someone answer me?

user19161
I need lemons!

user19161
This is getting hilarious.

user19161
Hello @meysam!

I have searched that though

@DavidWallace Hahaha nice one.
@WillHunting But seriously lemons work

user19161
7:17 AM
@ChairOTP Anyway, I was exaggerating a little. I am not really upset over such trivialities. I have much more important things to take care of in real life.

@DavidWallace, Hi
@DavidWallace, what type of game do you develope?
develop

@WillHunting Well, just in case your temperature ever rises due to serious stuff.

@prime I don't develop games.

What type of software?
@DavidWallace, did you ever ask a question in english.stackexchange.com or answer any question there?
@DavidWallace, i see stackoverflow.com/users/1081110/david-wallace , here all types of question-answer are related with Java
and programming

@prime - Last time you were in this chat room, you were very rude to the people who were here, and to Robusto in particular. Today, as I scroll upwards, I see that you insulted WillHunting and insulted ChairOTP. I have no intention of being next on your hit list. So umm, please don't bother trying to engage me in conversation.

user19161
7:23 AM
@DavidWallace "Insult" is too strong. He did not insult us, to be fair.

@DavidWallace, No, i didn't insult anyone, i am/was not rude.
@DavidWallace, You are completely wrong. Sorry.

24 mins ago, by ChairOTP
@prime where are you from?
23 mins ago, by prime
f..k

user19161
It is not the words themselves but the whole context.

That is normal if someone is not interested about location of his living.

user19161
And it is the pattern that I see, not isolated incidents.

7:25 AM
You know, personal questions are not interested here.

user19161
I don't judge things out of context and based on isolated incidents.

@WillHunting You weren't here a couple of days ago, when there were lots of people in this chat room, and prime was being quite offensive. I choose not to talk to such a person.

user19161
@DavidWallace I read the transcript, therefore my above three sentences.

@DavidWallace, i don't want to talk with you such person too, you can leave this room

@prime what did you exactly mean by 'f..k'?

user19161
7:26 AM
@prime He does not have to leave the room.

@DavidWallace, Nobody wants to talk with you.

@prime Because as far as I know that's not how you answer a question you don't want to answer.

@WillHunting Hey!

@prime Now you're being rude.

user19161
@ChairOTP And also telling people to leave the room. Seriously?

7:28 AM
@WillHunting :S

@WillHunting How are you anyway?

user19161
@DavidWallace The same old me, working on my pseudosecret life problems. Thanks for asking.

@DavidWallace, nobody wants to talk with you, you don't have to know how WillHunting is

@WillHunting I don't think you've used the word "pseudosecret" before. I'm trying to work out whether it has a pseudosecret meaning.

user19161
Let's all have lemons!

7:31 AM
@WillHunting But, under our armpits!

My lemon tree is starting to die. The nasty little insects that have inhabited it for years are winning, I think.

aka The Incomпrehensible Room

Much of the conversation here is incomprehensible, to be sure.

7:35 AM
@DavidWallace Tell me about it.

@ChairOTP - have you been practising your Ts Ds and Rs?

@DavidWallace I surely have, even though I haven't gotten used to it just yet.
And last day, I forgot to record myself, but it's a bit embarrassing.

Yeah, these things take time.

user19161
@ChairOTP You mean you have problems with those letters? Your written English seems pretty good.

user19161
@ChairOTP You mean "yesterday".

7:39 AM
@WillHunting I'm not sure if you were here last time, but yes, I'm having trouble with those letters since I have practised my spoken English with people all over the world, and accents have kind of ruined me.

Yes. People keep congratulating ChairOTP on his/her written English. Quite justifiably too; it's very good. But it can be confusing trying to make sense of all the different English accents that are out there.

user19161
@ChairOTP Your use of "practised" suggests you are using BrE instead of AmE where it is spelled "practiced"!

user19161
I am always amazed that "practice" and "license" are both noun and verb in AmE.

I think the only way to get good at spoken English is to try to have as many conversations as possible with people who speak really well.

@DavidWallace his. And yes, British accents are my favourite accents, but I'd like to keep my accent understandable for everyone. Especially where I live.
@WillHunting You see, such quite mess I have with both.

7:43 AM
There are so many different British accents though. And some of them are very difficult to understand, even to other British people.

My cousin was there for a year and for her, Scottish accents are the hardest to understand.

Right. I've always found Irish accents particularly difficult (OK, I know that Irish isn't British). But I did have a Scottish workmate a few years ago, and I occasionally had difficulty understanding her.

@prime واقعن توی زندگی دنبال چی هستی؟

user19161
@Meysam Hehe.

@DavidWallace It depends on which Irish accent too. Since I once skyped with this Irish girl, and I could actually understand her. But, while I was watching some videos, I came across with this Irish guy and I swear I barely understood what he said.

7:49 AM
@Meysam Do you know prime? Does he/she understand Persian?
@ChairOTP I guess that's true. I've never paid too much attention to variations from one Irish person to another.

@DavidWallace I do pay much attention to accents, I could even say that the first thing that I notice in a person who speaks English is their accent.

Hmm, people usually get mine wrong.

You said you were from NZ?

user19161
Australian accent is a little hard to understand compared to British or American.

I think I've heard it once, but I'm not sure.

7:53 AM
I did. But I regularly get accused of being English.

And I obviously loved it.
I'm accused of being French.

user19161
And Canadian spelling seems a mixture of American and British spelling.

I don't think it matters too much whether one uses American or British spelling. Either will be understood perfectly well.

What you have to be careful with, is the words you use.
I once used 'toss' with a British person...

Hmm, whether that would be a problem depends on the context.

7:56 AM
Yep, that too.

"Toss" is a perfectly ordinary word, usually meaning "throw". It's only obscene in British English when followed by "off".

But I thought 'toss' itself meant to jerk off. Or that's what she told me it means.

Umm, no, not really.
It would have to be a context where it couldn't mean anything else.

I think so. But you know, teenagers tend to see the funny side.

Right. There are certain cases where a perfectly innocent word can be made obscene by removing every other possible meaning. It's kind of hard to explain, but a source of endless jokes among the young.

8:07 AM
Ok, I have recorded myself. Here it is:
I haven't listened to it yet, so I'm embarrassed.

Umm, I'm in quite a loud room at the moment, so I shan't listen to it now. Maybe in half an hour or so. I assume you posted it because you want feedback?

They told me to post a recording of myself before to see what was exactly the problem with my t's and d's, and of course my r's. But I couldn't do it back then. So yes.

Was tchrist's advice helpful?

It was indeed. Knowing the way you must put your tongue when spelling a letter, surely helps. Now I need to become unaware of it when speaking.

user19161
8:34 AM
@ChairOTP "Toss" itself is an ordinary word. But even ordinary words can have extraordinary meanings!

8:46 AM
@DavidWallace No I don't. The only thing I know is that s/he is a live troll.

@Meysam Oh, he/she might be absolutely charming in real life!

@DavidWallace I'm going to sleep, as soon as you listen to the recording, ping me, please. I'll check it out later. Thank you.
Good night everybody.
Or Good morning already...

@ChairOTP I just listened to it, just now.
Your consonants are mostly good. Work on your phrasing and try to make your vowels a little more distinct.
Umm, but I too am off for the day.

9:10 AM
Hello
Is anyone there?

user19161
9:51 AM
@Monica What's the problem?

A: How to use effectively "by" and "in" with a date

Kristina Lopez"By" can also be used with a year to mark a point of time in the past, such as in this example, "By 1962, the baby boom was by most accounts, over."

Such a basic question and we still can't manage to answer it. I am disappoint.

user19161
10:28 AM
@ЯegDwight Ah, I did not look at that one.

user19161
I think we have a new troll in chat, if you scroll a little above you will see.

user19161
I even feel he is somehow related to NS.

user19161
11:02 AM
Hello @monica. I am here if you need some answers...

Hello
Thanks, but I don't have questions now
Hmm, seems like I have

user19161
@Monica It is hard to answer this kind of question because any speaker only knows a fraction of the words, so different people will have different opinions.

user19161
Even using google ngrams just refers to material on the internet and there are many ways to interpret that data.

user19161
But I know not what any of the three means. (I have a small vocab.)

11:10 AM
You do not!

user19161
Yes I do. I took the test at testyourvocab.com!

user19161
Actually, I am quite proud of having a small vocab. I can express all things using simple words. :-)

aren't you a native speaker?

user19161
Sort of.

user19161
11:12 AM
@cornbreadninja Did you go out partying just now?

@WillHunting no way
I am not a three-headed cornbread.

user19161
@cornbreadninja Oh, you must have had a quiet evening with Tim then. :-)

@WillHunting More or less.
but it's too hot to have slept with the windows open
and I got to worrying about things
and here we are.

does this line sound confusing to you? Eight killed by roadside mine in Turkey

user19161
@Monica It sounds like a newspaper article heading.

user19161
11:16 AM
Not confusing at all.

user19161
It just means that eight people were killed by a roadside mine in Turkey!

user19161
Titles are not the same as complete sentences.

a mine a bomb?
a friend of mine says that without further context
it's not clear what mine refers to?

a land mine, yes
have you heard of 'a minefield'?
or the game Minesweeper?

I thought it refers to a bomb
yes, of course

11:18 AM
it does

user19161
@Monica Well, one can look up the word in a dictionary and see that it can refer to a bomb.

without roadside it's not clear to me wheather it's a a land mine or not
The same headline was in the news where it says; 'they were killed by mine'

user19161
Well, if "roadside" were not there, the fact that people were killed by it suggests it is a bomb.

I thought so too

user19161
Of course, "mine" can also refer to some hole, so they could have been somehow killed by the hole too.

user19161
11:23 AM
"They were killed by mine" could be a complete sentence meaning for example that they were killed by my XXX.

user19161
As always, context makes things clear, or at least clearer.

?

11:56 AM
@DavidWallace Hello, how are you? is it raining there?
Someone told me that in NZ rain very often.
How do you have had the intuition to close for first my "in front of a miracle" ? Please, explain a bit.
The sense of question was: do Americans and Brits use the expression "in front of a miracle"? I did not ask for NZ people.
@Robusto Hello Robusto, probably David is in the bed to sleep now

Ah, the ping works again.

@Robusto ping is part of system

It was broken last night.

yes, it happen a mantenaince problem
but now it work again

@MattЭллен it's getting there.

12:10 PM
@cornbreadninja Hello corn, how are you? I'm fine

@Carlo_R. my sleep ran out too early. Aside from that, I can't complain.

well i'm happy for you
@cornbreadninja Please, could I ask you if "in front of a miracle" is used by Americans

as in... the time and space before a miracle occurs?
And no

No, when a miracle happen

12:15 PM
and how american say when they are in front of a miracle
?
for example, if a person has an extraordinary recovery after a cancer
In Italy we say "siamo di fronte ad un miracolo" (trasl. we are in front of a miracle)

They might say that they are the recipient of a miracle.
(they received a miracle; a miracle was bestowed upon them)

thank you @cornbreadninja
You are very kind

you're welcome :)

thank you again
I will go now. Hello everyone (also a Robusto)

Hello good-bye.

12:23 PM
Oh, a Robusto.

user1675582i am a regular visitor to stackoverflow but this is my first post, I am currently working on WINCE 6.0 Device. i need to send a file (.txt) to server through GPRS at regular interval in C# or by any other way. kindly can anyone suggest the best way to achieve this.

"I am a regular visitor but I can't tell 'Your Answer' from 'Ask Question'."
Somehow that reminds me of a Heiner Müller quote. "The world is not bad — it's just too full."

The Pub Med Central Open Access corpus prefers plural data over singular by a factor of 8:1, whereas the Elsevier corpus does so by a factor of 12:1. I wonder why there is such a difference. It must be the journals.
It is convenient though that they average out to 10:1, a nice round figure.

Q: I hate english, because I want to learn it

thavanI don't need English language in my personal life. But I need it in my work environment. I don't have any good friends who speak in English. I watched around 500 english movies with subtitles. I read lots of english novels. But when it comes to a situation to talk with people, I do a lot of gramm...

user19161
@cornbreadninja And what was the flagging reason?

@WillHunting not an answer

user19161
@cornbreadninja OK, though it sort of answers to me.

@WillHunting because he refers to an actual answer?

user19161
@ЯegDwight 500? OMG! I don't think I ever watched that many.

4:59 PM
I know I haven't seen 500 movies, but I sort of dislike movies.

user19161
@cornbreadninja Because he said sexy beast, so maybe wrong answer but still an answer!

user19161
@cornbreadninja Oh? Hmm, movies are nice, especially those where the main character goes through some tribulations and come out alive.

I like more active activities. :\

user19161
Oh OK! Good for you!

500 is nothing. If you watch just a movie a week, you'll be there in less than ten years. And most people watch way, way more.

user19161
5:04 PM
For me, I watch the same movie over and over again.

That's your mistake right there.
Seriously.
Life is too short.

user19161
You guys should know my favourite movies by now.

Fridge.

user19161
OMG!

Or Freeze?
Something like that.

user19161
5:05 PM
Freeze.

Same difference.

@WillHunting I don't

is it Oscar winning "The cat came back"?

@Carlo_R. We are witnessing/have witnessed a miracle or we are witnesses to a miracle. This would apply to both the receivers and the onlookers, whereas, @cornbreadninja 's suggestion would only be for the recipient.

user19161
@Meysam They are "Good Will Hunting" and "A beautiful mind".

5:06 PM
@WillHunting and the Polar Express

user19161
@MattЭллен Yes, but I wanted to shorten my answer.

@WillHunting Are they on the top of your list?

user19161
@Meysam Yes, I gave you the top two.

My top one is Amores Perros

user19161
5:08 PM
@Meysam What language is the movie?

@WillHunting Mexican (Espanol?)

user19161
@Meysam In other words Spanish?

Is that the one with the dog fights?

@WillHunting That kind of statement should have gone to the comments if at all. A real question deserves a real answer. Or if he'd produced some research to prove sb is a common abbreviation for sexy beast, that should have been included.

@MattЭллен Yup
@WillHunting Yes

5:10 PM
@Meysam I like that one.

user19161
@SpareOom Yeah, I am always not sure about flags. But one thing is that "not an answer" should not be used for "wrong answers".

user19161
@Meysam Though perhaps there are different varieties of Spanish, I don't know.

One movie a week is not good enough to learn a foreign language.

user19161
@MattЭллен Real dogs fighting?

@WillHunting yeah, it's a part of the film that is distinctive - it's not what I like it for.

user19161
5:12 PM
@thavan I see.

@Carlo_R. Americans could say in the presence of a miracle.

@WillHunting Real dogs fighting. But hey, that's not the core concept of movie! The story has a lot of things to say, you have to watch it yourself
@thavan Your question was sort of sad

user19161
@Carlo_R. Glad you returned to the site. Just remember to stay polite and do some research before posting and everything will be fine.

I watched the movie sweet sixteen, I got confused that is it english or some other language.

user19161
@thavan Hmm, never heard of. Confused?

5:15 PM
@WillHunting I'm not clear about flagging things either. (I've a very small record.) That non-answer fell under both categories, in my opinion.

user19161
I know I get confused between Swedish and Tamil. They sound similar.

user19161
@SpareOom Yeah, so I gave up flagging already!

@WillHunting Why did you give it up, because of some being confusing?

user19161
@SpareOom Yeah, I am always not sure which category it falls into, if any.

@SpareOom Thank you for the complete explanation, I'm grateful to you.

5:18 PM
You're welcome @Carlo_R.

@SpareOom Thank you again

Ditto.

user19161
:-)

@WillHunting Thank you for the suggestion, but now the problem is that I have finished the question to ask. I hope Learner English start soon

5:20 PM
I don't know about swedish, But I'm a tamilian... It is one of the classical language.

user19161
@Carlo_R. Hmm, I think it will take quite a while. I see that you are interested in ILU.

user19161
@thavan I love Bollywood movies, but I can never quite figure out which Indian language it is.

user19161
Tamil, Hindi etc.

@Will Yes I'm interested language learner exchange, I have a good question there, too

user19161
@Carlo_R. Ah OK. How long have you been learning Eng?

5:23 PM
@WillHunting I study english from three month
but without any appreciable result

user19161
@Carlo_R. Do you mean "for three months"?

@thavan However, you write english very good. Congratulations

Apr 10 at 18:18, by Carlo_R.
I started a month ago, and ELU is a great learning tool.
@Carlo_R. You said in April you'd been studying it for a month.

@WillHunting Bollywood's movies are in Hindi. India has many languages. Most speaking language is Hindi. Tamil is spoken in Tamilnadu, a state in in India, and also spoken and official language in Srilankan minorities called Tamil people.

user19161
@Carlo_R. It should be "very well".

5:25 PM
@will sim is right: 5 months
@sim why do not you give me your welcome?

user19161
@Carlo_R. Well, you guys have had much friction. Let's not get into another argument here. :-)

@Carlo_R. Welcome? You mean why didn't I say hi to you?

@simchona How should one go about being helpful in regard to flags? Do non-mods look for things to flag, or just when they happen to notice something needs attention they flag it?

In my language there is an idiom "time is the best doctor".

@Carlo_R. In this case, time will not heal all wounds.
I am not inclined to like someone who called me a terrorist.

user19161
5:30 PM
@Carlo_R. In English, there are "Time will heal all wounds" and "Laughter is the best medicine".

@SpareOom It depends. For me, if I saw a new user bump something to the active list I'd check it out.

@will thank you

@SpareOom Sometimes I'd also see someone post a subjective question, and then say something like "well question X is open; why can't mine stay open too?" Then I'd look for subjective questions that were open, and suggest that they be locked with the historical banner. I did a bunch of those at one point.

@cornbreadninja same as it ever was

user19161
@Carlo_R. In a sense that is true, because one day we all die and there is no more pain. But some wounds can be very deep and take a lifetime to heal.

5:31 PM
@Carlo_R. Thanks. I write emails to mail colleagues. that might be the reason.

Time wounds all heels

user19161
@Mitch Not if you are wearing good shoes.

@Mitch This is so true!

user19161
@thavan "Mail colleagues"?

user19161
@SpareOom You need good shoes!

user19161
5:32 PM
Those who need shoe advice, I am here!

I fear it may be too late.
@WillHunting Are you a shoe expert?

@SpareOom Especially the prettiest ones.

user19161
@SpareOom Not really, I just said so because of what you said.

user19161
But I think high heels are dangerous.

user19161
First, they make you trip and fall.

5:34 PM
I have to go now. My grandchildren call me. See you later.

I grew up wearing just sneakers, but of course, along come the teens where the damage is done.

@Carlo_R. OK, see you!

@WillHunting a 'heel' being an old fashioned way of referring to a jerk, but in the context of the epigram, the person who did you wrong.

A college roommate wore even high heeled slippers. She couldn't touch her heel to the ground when barefoot.

user19161
@Mitch So you were referring to negative kamma, sorta.

karma, yes.

user19161
I prefer Pali to Sanskrit.

Brands of high heels? Some like them a bit tight.

user19161
@SpareOom The last sentence is unbelievable.

@WillHunting Shortens the calf muscles.

@WillHunting It seems you learn lots of languages. Do you have any idea in concept of "tamil is derived from sanskrit" or "sanskrit is derived from tamil"?

@thavan No, I don't. I only speak English well actually. Perhaps you can look these up on Wikipedia or something.

@WillHunting then how can you say that you prefer pali to sanskrit?

user19161
@thavan I mean I prefer the Pali transliteration into English to the Sanskrit one eg kamma and karma. That is all I meant. :-)

Karma means வினை. In tamil it is "Karumam". it seems similar to sanskrit?. A tamil proverb "வினை விதைத்தவன் வினை அருப்பான்" (vinai vithaithavan vinai arupaan). It means you will get your own results of your karma.
@WillHunting thanks for your assistance.

@thavan I did not help you at all!

@WillHunting A while ago, a young child used the word yesternight. I was going to correct him, but thought it would be a good word and decided to see if there was actually already such a word before I took it out of his vocabulary. I added to mine instead. thefreedictionary.com/yesternight Perfectly good word that people don't use anymore.

user19161
@SpareOom Well, words go in and out of the corpus all the time. I would not use it myself. For example, there is also "gentlewoman" and not just "gentleman".

user19161
That's why we should check a dictionary before answering even the most harmless looking question!

@WillHunting Gentlewoman is used in some contexts though, in the Senate for example.
I do endeavor to back up my answers here. What I thought I knew, I don't always know I don't know, if you know what I mean.
