I wonder whether this sheds some light on the Monster-Shop: Auf der rechten Seite befinden sich Loren, mit denen Sie zum Amt fahren können, um konfiszierte Filme zurückzuholen.

No idea...
In Dutch, a monster is also a sample of something.
And monsteren is like monitoring, watching.

Jez
nah i'm checking it out in the game
it's a monster shop alright
where you buy monsters

There, I've translated a couple, but now I need a break.
I think I ended up prefixing everything with TODO, because it can use some polish.

I want to buy monsters.

I hope you have a good diff tool.

Jez
5:07 PM
@RegDwight cheers!

Oh, and I've fixed the German on one occasion, too. :P
No spaces before question marks. Just like in English.

Jez
you put Morgen as tomorrow not morning?

Well it's immediately followed by Heute/Today.

Jez
curious, there's spaces before question marks all over the place in this game
ah

Well perhaps it was programmed by an Indian.

5:09 PM

Jez
An Indian that knows German?

Well, or a French.

man

Some Germans actually do have problems with whitespaces before punctuation marks, but it's not anywhere as rampant as in English.
What is more rampant in German is using quotes for emphasis.
Unsere Produkte sind "gut"!

Eww. Happens in Dutch too.
Oh, like that.
No.

5:12 PM
It's like an unintended wink. Always hilarious.

What's also rampant here is people who find it necessary to do "quotation marks" in the air with two fingers.

That's just a custom.
Its time will pass.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Looks more like a nervous twitch possibly caused by brain tumour or low IQ.

A: What is the difference between ‘Hot Corned Beef’ and ‘"Hot" Corned Beef’?

RobustoDon't rely on signs you see in windows as a usage guide. In standard English, quotes around a word are usually used to distance the writer from its use in some way, normally to cite their usage by someone else or to express doubt about their veracity. For example, I might write: "Fred calle...

Q: Best way to breathe for long-distance running

Will HuntingWhat is the best way to breathe while running long-distance? One can breathe in through the nose only, the mouth only, or both nose and mouth. The same applies to breathing out. Are there studies comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods?

I just had a nice lunch with my husband.

user19161
@KitFox Yay!

Jez
I haven't noticed whitespaes before punctuation to be a problem in English - have you ?

Now I need to figure out why my page won't stay the proper size.

@Jez I just did.

Anybody know how to set a min-height for a table?

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Up of course.

@KitFox In HTML/CSS?

Jez
@Cerberus If you're keeping up, here's the latest translation file: pastebin.com/YmM4jS4b

@Mahnax Yes. CSS.

Jez
@RegDwight I edited a few of your strings to add newlines. I'm making sure the translated strings have the same number of newlines as the originals and trying to keep each line of text roughly the same length.

5:23 PM
@KitFox Ah, so you want the table to always be at least x pixels high?

@Mahnax Yes. 420px.

@KitFox Okay, let me try it out.

user19161
@Mahnax It is related as reg commented but definitely different enough to warrant a new post.

@WillHunting I agree.

@KitFox Min-height is not available for tables, unfortunately.
I'm going to play with some JavaScript and see if I can find a way to make it work, though.

@RegDwight @Cerberus I think translation of a54a6417-7efd-4485-8212-4e624162f1cf onwards would be helpful, they are the tutorial info boxes so I could get more context that way

@Mahnax Before you do, and I appreciate it, maybe you know a better way to do what I am trying to do.

Lemme see how lazy I am...

5:32 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 OK, thanks.

@KitFox Uh, yeah. It doesn't work, according to my own personal experience, and everyone else on the Internet.

@KitFox Lol. You are funneh.

@KitFox Sure, what is it you are trying to achieve, exactly?
A table that is always at least 420 px high, no matter how many cells are present?

In the context of movies, wouldn't weiblich = "chick flick"?

Supposedly so.
But nobody ever says that.

5:33 PM
Weibenfilm.

Weiblich refers to the gender of the thing in question.

@Mahnax I have a master page, and in the main content area, I want to put a sidebar for the navigation tree. I had built a two column table, where the first column spans the two rows. I'd like the side bar to always be at least 420px.

Weiberfilm?

@Cerberus Weiberfilm.
Jinx.

But maybe I should design the layout differently.

5:34 PM
Yay!

Jez
@Robusto If you're referring to the translation, I think this is probably in the context of actors/actresses... but I'll need to see it ingame to be sure

Right. The actors.
That could be it.

From that context, I'd say Jez is right on the money.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Well then ... actor/actress.

Well yeah. But you'd have to look at it in context.
God knows where that string is displayed.

@WillHunting You need to see Cable Guy.

Hey @David, is the Trans-Pacific Partnership already in effect in NZ? Or only signed?

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 In case you watch Hong Kong movies too, Jim Carrey is like Stephen Chow.

I know Stephen Chow alright.

user19161
Stephen Chow is also not funny.

5:38 PM

@WillHunting perhaps he should play in an adaptation of Cable Guy.

@Cerberus Places where you shouldn't drink the water?

Green means signed.
@KitFox Heh, no, TPP.

@Cerberus signed a document allowing Peter Jackson to make movies there?

But I can find a more interesting map for you if you like.

2 mins ago, by Cerberus
Hey @David, is the Trans-Pacific Partnership already in effect in NZ? Or only signed?
And has it been ratified already? Or is that not required?

Lol @ Trans-Pacific Partnership.
They should just call it Another Useless Stuff.

How about Another Putting Harmless People in Jail.

Every country is in OVER 9000 Tranny Partnerships already. And look where it gets them.

Nowhere.

@Jez I was under no impression that I would need to sign anything to get there.

5:43 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 What isn't?
The TPP may be the worst thing the world has seen so far.

Jez
@RegDwightѬſ道 No, one's government signs it for one.

5:46 PM
@Mahnax Basically, yes.

6
A: What's the difference between "adviser" and "advisor" -- are both interchangeable?

RegDwight Ѭſ道commented: Related post on the Separated by a common language blog: "[T]he -or form is stronger in the US than the UK, though there's considerable variation within each country." And: "[I]n my job, I advise students and convene courses, and when I spell out those roles, I'm an advisor and a convenor, but when my UK university spells them, I'm often an adviser (which just looks wrong to me) and a convener. (Incidentally, Blogger's allegedly AmE spellchecker likes the -er forms.)"

Jez
@RegDwight nice, thanks
advisor it is

@Jez I spell it "advisor."

@KitFox Okay, so that will always be 420 px high or more. Would you like the code?

@Mahnax Sure.

@KitFox Okay.

user19161
@Jez I would look it up first.

You keep putting quite an amount of work into questions that get closed within a minute of them getting posted.

7:00 PM
I think he is a young buck.

@KitFox I never get it right the first time.

Do you do this stuff much?

Not every day, but I design and maintain some websites.
And I usually hand code them.

So do can you help me with this layout?
And by "can," I mean willing as well as able.

I am willing to look at it. If my eyes glaze over I might have to stop looking at it. :-)

7:05 PM
I just want a stupid lefthand sidebar, then a content area, and a narrow button area on the right, but the sidebar to have a min-height of 420px.
I had it as a table, but thought divs would be better.
maybe that was a mistake.

You are doing it with floats?

I've done the sidebar as a left float, and the other two as right floats, but I can't figure out how to adjust the heights of the right divs.
@MetaEd I don't have to be doing it that way.
I thought divs were recommended over tables.
And it looks better with my styles.
But it isn't a requirement, especially if it is the wrong way to do it.

I use divs for layout. I am a masochist that way.

I don't much do this stuff, so I haven't much of an idea of what's proper.
Seems like it ought to be something simple, so I figure I must be doing it wrong.

Jez
@RegDwight get anywhere further with the translation? :-)

@RegDwightѬſ道 I think Carlo is sincere (he's not purposefully trying to raise our ire, despite that being the immediate reaction)

I want it to look something like this, but with control over the heights of box 2 and 3.

7:12 PM
@Jez yes, I will be sending you the file in a couple minutes.

I'll post what I have, just a min.

Jez
@RegDwight cool

Ok so the picture is the layout you are aiming for?
Are these liquid verticals? Meaning box 2 and box 3 height are constrained to 1/2 box 1 height no matter what box 1 height is? Or are you fixing the heights?

.sidebar
{
    float:left;
    background-color:#B6B7BC;
    border-right: 1px solid #496077;
    width:20%;
    min-height: 420px;
}

.rightcolumn
{
    float:right;
}

.bottombar
{
    clear: right;
    float: right;
    border-top: 1px solid #496077;
    width:80%;
}
This is close, but the sidebar stops at the top of the bottom bar.
The "rightcolumn" is the part that will shrink or expand.

Jez
Pizza Hut are now doing a "hot dog stuffed crust"

7:17 PM
This is the markup:
<div class="sidebar">
   <asp:TreeView ID="TreeView1" runat="server" OnLoad="BuildTree" />
</div>
<div class="rightColumn">
    <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="SecureMainContent" runat="server" />
</div>
<div class="bottombar">
    <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="SecureFootContent" runat="server" />
</div>

Jez
@KitFox you're looking for a tabular layout?

Yes-ish.
Basically.

Jez
use a table.
ignore morons who tell you not to. it's 100 times easier and tables are designed for tabular layout.

You don't care what happens below 420px?

Jez
what do you mean?

7:24 PM
Ok that layout works for me, or doesn't work for me, depending on the dimensions of my window. And the reason is that 80% + 20% is 100%.
But your sidebar width is 20% plus 1px and your bottom bar width is 80% which is a total of 100% + 1px.
And that doesn't always fit.

Jez
why do you care about windows below 420px?

@MetaEd Oh, is that what's happening?
So should I fix the width of the columns, or one of the columns?

You could eliminate the border on your layout div and do it in an inner div.
That way you would be back to 80% + 20% = 100%.
Or as you say, you could fix the width of your sidebar, or you could fudge your percentages a little. Sidebar of 19% might work fine for all devices that actually exist.

throws it all out of the window

Hmm, maybe you could put a left margin of -1px on your content? That's not something I've tried.

7:34 PM
Frigga, I hate this part of my job.

I find I often try to make one div do too much work. Your three divs can set up your framework / scaffolding, then within the sidebar put a "pretty" div that contains your border and content.
so that's your paint div.
Frigga indeed. Happy Friday!
I hear it's an especially good day today, incidentally. Apparently God is so loving that he killed his son on this date in A.D. 33.
Or at least created a sock puppet to do it for him.

Starting with the ID you mentioned, till the end.

By the way one my favorite things in CSS is inline-blocks.

Thanks, I think that's got it.

And now I gotta leave the PC in peace for a while lest my wife kills me.

7:38 PM
Inline-blocks?
@RegDwightѬſ道 Later!

That lets you use inline flow to lay out divs.

Would that help here?

For what you're doing no. Let me show you an example of where it does help.

Jez
@RegDwight excellent. thanks!

Those pictures in a row will wrap onto a new line if the window is small, such as on a mobile device.
They flow like text.

7:41 PM
Oh I see.

But they're not text, they're divs.

I can see where that would be useful.

@KitFox Careful, IE doesn't work and play well with inline-block.
Actually, I could expand that statement to say "IE doesn't work and play well with noun."

Thanks for the tip. takes notes

@Robusto ha :-)
Although actually that site seems to work fine in IE with the inline-blocks.

7:50 PM
My support shall be "Install FF or Chrome or Opera or Safari or anything that actually works."
But they won't know how to do that.

@KitFox Leave out the Opera. It is the snootiest and most persnickety of browsers. IE is just the kid in the corner eating paste; Opera is the gay kid making fun of your crayon color choices.

OK. Will do.
