1:27 AM
What's policy on VTC-ing old questions (like this mathematics puzzle)?

2:07 AM
Not sure there's much point for an old puzzle, tbh

2:49 AM
Slow day here today.

3:10 AM
yeah, kind of odd

idk if this is the best place to ask, but i want free rep i'm stuck

lol

not sure if anyone could give me tips on how to find hints for puzzles like this

if I had any good ideas about that one I wouldn't have offered the bounty on it.

looks at bounty
oh yeah

3:19 AM
Something tells me @boboquack knows a thing or two about solving that puzzle - but I'm also guessing they won't be telling those secrets ;)

anyone here good with encrypting/decrypting? for the challenge it appears to be CCGDEBDGBDG -> HORSERADISH but I have no idea what kind of encoding could do that
Of course my hunch could be completely wrong

CCGDEBDGBDG decrypted with a key of "VOPLAKDDTLZ" will give HORSERADISH, but I am guessing that's not very helpful

@Rubio yeah, tried that already
The corresponding hint is "More...* between the accents", where "between" isn't necessary and the "accents" part is done already so I'm not sure if "More...*" helps

3:58 AM
The ... and * seem to be significant

4:35 AM
@ASCII-only where did you get horseradish from?

4:46 AM
@Alconja Hey

Hi

May I know how you created Wordberg machine? Did you use powerpoint?

For the images?

Yes. And the animation..

All photoshop.

4:48 AM
Oh.. Even the animations?

Drew the main image at half resolution, scaled up 2x (with no interpolation), then used photoshop's animation capabilities to do the animations, mostly tweening moving layers, but some frame by frame

Nice. Thanks. Was thinking of something similar. Unfortunately, don't have much animation experience with photoshop. Did you use any online resource to know how its done? Or just trial and error? Or, have you done any photoshop course?

@Alconja just look at the posted answer and you'll see, basically the answer has to be an ingredient for coleslaw that begins with H
so horseradish is a likely candidate

Never done anything formal, but have been using photoshop (for fun). Hadn't used the animation stuff before (actually, not quite true, the slot in the door of "You approach the door" was also done this way, and was the first time I'd used it), and it was mostly fumble my way through it... though I've done a little bit of animation stuff before in flash, so was vaguely familiar with the concepts
@ffao Ok, so just based on the assumption of being an ingredient.. (not that i've ever had horseradish in coleslaw before). But I'm not quite convinced that's what the OCH refers to... why is it only three letters when there's more ingredients?

@Alconja A recipe >_>

4:54 AM
@Alconja Hmm.. That makes sense. Thanks. Will look into it.

@Techidiot Ping me if you want to ask any specific questions

Sure. I will. Thanks again for the inputs.

@ASCII-only Just seems like a stretch (IMHO) to go from Carrot, Red Cabbage, Onion ==> OCH ==> H = Horseradish

@Alconja Those are the only ones that are chopped up (one of the "what" hints is the section hint itself), and Mayo can't be chopped up
@Alconja Yeah, I think so too but I have no clue on how to interpret the hint

Shouldn't their be a R then? Else why make it specifically red cabbage, and not just cabbage?

4:57 AM
@Alconja That's true, the OP states that there is information linked to the sections, but the only one I can see are the locations (bar numbers - 11, 12 and 22), which isn't helping

Yeah. Not saying it's wrong... was mostly just trying to catch up to see if I could add anything.
First thing that jumps out at me, re: the "More...* between the accents" is that it could be referring to the stocatto dots on notes between the accented notes? Gives you 4 2 2 1 3 2 3

@Alconja Good observation, I noticed them before but didn't see a hint relating to them so I thought they weren't important
Not that I look at the positioning it seems a lot more relevant than I though it was

Was just thinking "More..." => "More [literal dots]"
though not sure about the "*" (could be * as in a regular expression meaning "many" dots)

Q: What did they kill Bob to hide?

Liam DalyI recently received an email from my friend Bob Fish, he'd stumbled upon something scary, and people were watching him, I was to visit him at the beach. I've attached his email: I have to be quick, I'm being watched. Pool cleaning in Santa Ana, saw some strange high power tech. Have some ...

2 hours later…
7:25 AM
                 LAST ELECTION THIS ELECTION
first 1 hours: 91 70
first 4 hours: 165 128
first 12 hours: 225 207

first 72 hours: 395 330
TOTAL VOTES CAST: 416 330 (at 58 hours)

7:50 AM
@incesterror21 I can see you haven't done any modifications to your puzzle content. So, why those edits? For bumping the post up? Or something meaningful? (You can chose not to answer)

8:08 AM
@Rubio Is this worrying? Does this means the puzzling SE lost many of its member? Should we do something?

@JamalSenjaya people probably just haven't gotten around to it probably. There's still time. Also, last time it was PSE's first ever election - everyone wanted to be a part of the historic moment ;)

@JamalSenjaya Not worrying (at least not yet) - at 24 and 48 hours the current election shows more votes cast than the first one.

Just my opinion, Puzzling SE get tougher, the question get harder, New members have fewer chance to answer, easy puzzles get less upvotes, even downvotes.

what I find interesting is that the first 12 hours, current was lower than prior; for the second 12 hours, current well outpaced prior, to the extent of making up the deficit, and then some.

@JamalSenjaya That sounds like right thought. I can see it happening.. Soon people will start worrying about the response they are going to get for their puzzle and may not post it..

8:14 AM
@Techidiot The edits were necessary
Does this tell you anything?

@incesterror21 Do you have some secret tools which hides the edit from revision history? :p Or are you using revision history as a clue ? :p
leave me alone already That's all I got @incesterror21

Actually none of the two. How can I put it... there are parts of the puzzle than can be changed without changing the puzzle itself
Does this make sense?

The times..
Or may be tags..I am not sure.

Or simply elements outside the site

The clue that was noted as needing fixing, then subsequently noted as fixed, and then all that commentary removed altogether, was all for "Visual 1"
Assuming as I do that this is a reference to some image located external to the text of the puzzle posting, none of those changes would have been in the puzzle text, but elsewhere.
That also suggests that any external elements are not in i.stack.imgur as they cannot be changed without changing their hash, and thus whatever points at them would also have to change, and there's no evidence of such updates.

8:20 AM
Hmm.. But in that case, why was the edit done on the post? No one reached there yet anyway :p

There may have been someone who did, so just to make sure I wanted to let them know

Okay. Sounds good.

@incesterror21 ? This is a part of a larger hunt thing that is also off the site?

All elements are accessible from within PSE

interesting. I was largely expecting something with a user-selectable hash, off-site. Now I'm intrigued even more. :)

8:24 AM
Glad to hear that!

His avatar could be changed without editing the puzzle, for example
just a thought

I thought the email id would be relevant. But, its not

and indeed it changed -- it used to be i.stack.imgur.com/nCcKc.png, now it's i.stack.imgur.com/qr4EH.png

Hmm.. Both are not valid keys for the cipher..

@Techidiot If they were keys I wouldn't have changed the avatar as it would have changed the cipher itself

8:35 AM
I was not sure when they were changed.. But okay. I get it.

@ffao I'm curious, how did you see I changed my avatar? Is there a profile editing history?

Sid
That's odd. I thought Puzzling grew over the last year.
Looks like the people leaving Puzzling are more than those joining.

@Rubio Good job. The id was just too funny to let it go to waste!

@incesterror21 I had your puzzle open in a different tab, from before the edits were made
now I'm curious, is that relevant or did you just change your picture on a whim? or do you not want to say?

It may be useful after going further with that puzzle.

8:48 AM
@ffao What would it tell you if I didn't want to say anything?

Sid
Let's hope that isn't a guess what I am thinking cipher.

hopefully nothing

Well done, you just solved the puzzle! Now go back and tell everyone
@Rubio abcdef.. is the key

How did you get that key?

well that's silly
I was brute-forcing the key right now actually

8:50 AM
Under the nose has been used as keyboard in one of puzzle ..

Well there's no need to to that...

just hadn't gotten that far
yeah but keyboard didn't really clue abcdef to me
I tried several other things that didn't work (obviously)
Can I post that @tech or are you going to?

Go ahead..

The key was hidden in a different way

Yeah
It's Hex

8:53 AM
Brute-force seems to be quite powerful

In the block with the word NOSE!

I didn't brute force, a couple of tries can't be brute force right ;) I did a lateral thinking :p

You seem to be quite fast with the ciphers

@incesterror21 But I don't get the first part.. What about the rest of the characters? I thought everything was a part of the puzzle..

8:56 AM
I myself thought the big "r" and the fact that there are only 5 letters/numbers would tell enough
but obviously the distraction was too much

Yeah there's a little too much in there

Alright, I will remember it

among others, the "v" hat on the first figure was ambiguously distracting

Those were > and <
You are right though. I didn't think of that

This distracted me the most
I spent a lot of time in there :)

8:58 AM
What did you do!

Just take the image and put a black background..It turns into a kind of awesome graphic :p

Interesting, looks very meaningful in a way I agree

@Rubio Not sleepy yet?
I think it's quite late right?

It's been rumored that I don't sleep.

Dogs sleep up to 16 hours a day

9:04 AM
@Rubio but with @Emrakul, I see proof for not sleeping

Emrakul is just a night owl
if a paper owl can be nocturnal, that is

So I'm a little curious - you happened on that magical imgur hash randomly, and then threw out whatever the original puzzle was going to be in favor of that wonderfully whimsical use of the hash?

@Rubio The powers that be

@incesterror21 Sometimes, the imgur breaks the pixels. You can always verify if they are same before and after. Luckily, it remained fine in this case

You mean imgur alters images?

9:14 AM
I think it did here

I've heard that, but have never seen it

I did encounter that already
I thought I was to stupid for uploading

I do know that saving an image as a jpg in a graphic editor can change things due to the compression level when exporting
but the image you get back out of imgur should be byte-for-byte the same as what you uploaded
otherwise those puzzles that embed (say) archives at the end of images would get trashed

I've tried to upload a previously downloaded image and it changed
but you may be right, I think it was jpg

Q: How do you decrypt a keyword transposition cipher w/o keyword?

J. DoeI have computed the keyword length using I.C. but idk how to derive the first keyword. This polyalphabetic cryptogram requires two keywords to break, but I am not sure how to get either of them. Could someone please explain or point me to a resource where I can learn this? I have not been able to...

9:56 AM
@ASCII-only I realised that that hint was in error, so I've taken it down.
@ASCII-only Doesn't it? Look at the new hint...
@Alconja Yes, the staccatos are important for that part. What else does ... mean to you?

3 hours later…
1:30 PM
@Techidiot I might be able to help give some pointers as I've taken some classes with photoshop animation usage
Also GaMen, and Rubio you should work on sleeping more.

@n_palum Sleep is boring. There's puzzles to be solved!

@Rubio Zzzzzzzz

Q: World world world world - riddle

landenPsychology teacher posted this riddle on the board today. All the "worlds" are stacked on top of one another.

I just noticed that if you scroll to the top of the chat window, there is a "highlights" button. Does anyone know how it is determined what the "highlights" of chat are?

I think its to do with activity

Not sure for certain, but it seems to focus on when lots of messages were sent at once, or when a lot of replies were used

5:35 PM
Has anyone heard from Rand recently? I half expected him to run for mod, but I haven't seen him around in a week or so

'Last seen May 10 at 0:29'
may be on holiday or somethig

...Huh, that is weird.

Plotting his revenge

I don't think he could've run for mod - he was suspended less than a year ago.
("Was suspended" as in "his account was in the suspended state", not "a suspension started less than a year ago".)

Right, I'd forgotten about that

Sid
5:41 PM
Didn't his suspension spark off some meta posts urging mods to tell what he was suspended for?
I vaguely remember seeing thatsome time back

I think that was Gamow

Yeah, that was Gamow.

Sid
Oh, right. that was Gamow. Sorry.

who has come back and is reviewing stuff, but doesn't seem to be posting anything

It was fairly soon after the election, and I had been unilaterally closing too many questions.

Sid
5:44 PM
Right, you were acting like a dictator(:P)

You should read back through Rand's early meta posts. They're hilarious

So there were a lot of issues, and there was a meta post about the mods overstepping their boundaries (or something to that effect).

yeah, I remember that

he kept accusing the mods, it was actually quite funny

Right, Rand seemed to start off in meta as a bit of a revolutionary
one of the reasons I thought he'd run

5:44 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Oh, there are some interesting deleted comments.

Quote from Rand: 'I am deeply shocked. Is this the way we are now treating new users at the Puzzling Stack Exchange? I'm posting this question in case there's an innocent explanation, but if not, this is the final straw - I'm definitely leaving this site for good.'
That went well :P

Yeah, the early days of Puzzling were contentious.

Sid
He seemed to have gotten into a fight with Shog there.

Yep.
I mean suspensions can end early if the person suspended and the moderator team come to an understanding. And suspensions can continue indefinitely if the person suspended goes out of his way to make more work for everyone even while suspended. — Shog9 ♦ Dec 23 '14 at 21:02
I find this comment strangely relevant.

Ha!

5:51 PM
Yeah, I wish there was more we could do to help with that
my flag-finger was tricked last time, still not entirely sure how that happened

Don't worry, it happens.
Trust me, the flagging helps a lot.

I try :P

@n_palum Ha, I can solve that one. It's Morse code, quite obviously; Capital Z's are dashes and small z's are dots, so it's, umm, 6S or TESS or DIS. (Unfortunately it's too short to make THIS and to long to make DIE.)

You've found me out

Yeah, Rand missed all the Mos stuff.
No idea where he went.

6:02 PM
Mos stuff? Oh yeah, the room was closed, wasn't it?

It was very much closed
Super dead

@Deusovi Shog closed it, so I doubt it's getting reopened any time soon, if at all.

What was the reason for the closure?

Not only closed - deleted

Q: My apologies. Mos Eisley closure

ValorumDuring a conversation on chat yesterday I used words and phrases that resulted in a chat flag. This resulted in my receiving a(nother) chat-ban and the suspension of the Mos Eisley chatroom. I'd like to offer my apologies to the site's users. It was not my intention to cause offence. In hindsi...

6:04 PM
Deleted? Wow.

That should give some insight

It's a bit vague, but it seemed to be surrounding inappropriate remarks, or so on

It has to do with the history
Read Shog's post here:

Q: How come our main chat, Mos Eisley, got frozen this time?

MoozMos Eisley is currently frozen#, apparently indefinitely. I assume it has something to do with the users mentioned in @Shog9's banner, but is it possible that we be told - at least in concept - what happened in our room to make it get frozen again? If the rest of you want to create a new room...

People weren't learning

Wasn't there something about a lot of flagging?

6:05 PM
@Deusovi They'd been having issues with mos for a bit, somebody just pushed it a bit too far. I think someone posted nsfw stuff in there and that's why Shog pulled the trigger, but I don't know

Hi btw

GAmen

Wow.

We don't really need to have a long discussion about it here.

So does SFF no longer have a chatroom?

6:06 PM
They made a new one, but Shog told them to "think long and hard before making a new one"

someone made a replacement but it is a bit controversial

@Deusovi we got a new one

Q: General chat room: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

SQBAfter Mos Eisley was nuked from orbit, I've created a new room with a new name: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe The Name The name comes from The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which features a restaurant of the same name. An earlier name came from William Gibson's The Bridge tril...

Yeah, I'd certainly expect it to be controversial.

It seems the community is split on whether or not it should have been made so quickly

Because of Shog's statement most likely

6:08 PM
I hope it goes well for them.

We seem to be doing okay now

Most mods are enforcing Be Nice better now, the gamedev chat room had a tiffy a few days ago

Sid
@Mith and Rand is absent during all this drama?

We've not seen him anyhow

@Sid he hasn't logged in anywhere

6:12 PM
As far as I can tell valorum posted a clip NSFW (Something to do with non-consensual activities) and then started a conversation about it. They also seem to have done it before...
You can see why it got closed
they had enough warnings really

Yikes

Sid
Whoa.

Apparently people don't read what I type :(

?

6:14 PM
Exactly

@dcfyj I was expanding, I did read your comment though

@dcfyj I read it :)

Sid
@dcfyj Yeah. You didn't elaborate.

@incesterror21 What is it even supposed to be?

just delete it its spam

6:14 PM
@Sid elaborate how?

I think it's attack on titan

yeah thats fine

hey @art :P

But that doesn't matter

hi @art

6:15 PM
o/

Following me around now? :P

\o

@dcfyj following the flags around

Ah, didn't know it was flagged

aye
but meh

6:16 PM
Well done homepage

Hm. Hey @deus, question for ye - I've noticed a particular user making decent looking answers, then deleting them, then editing them repeatedly while they're deleted without them ever resurfacing. It's not wrong, per se, so far as I can tell... but it is rather weird. Any ideas what (other than relentless perfectionism?) might motivate that sort of behavior?

who is the user?

Do the questions have another accepted answer in the mean time?
So that the user might see no need to repost

yeah if another answer is accepeted that may make them think they need to delete their answer
the editing thing is weird though

I think in both cases their answer is subsequent to another answer, but the edits continue even after a different answer has been accepted.

6:27 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Community can undelete it, no?
(If it's a good valid answer)

do you mean we can vote to undelete?

I've seen it, too

pretty sure thats only questions

I think delete/undelete answers is 20k

If I had 10k I'd look :P

6:28 PM
not sure why it's different than questions

hi jon!

because they're specialer

@BeastlyGerbil Hello!

@Sconibulus answers are more highly valued here (well apparently anyway. they have +10 so...)

Oh another blue one

6:29 PM
we should make mods green for a day
just to change things up

St. Patrick's Day would be ideal for that. :)

Or make their color like your avatar @ArtOfCode

@incesterror21 this one a community manager, not just any mod :P

hey @Jon, can that go on the team's list for st patrick's next year?
@incesterror21 I approve of this proposal

start to stratify the mods :)

6:31 PM
They are all blue to me, how could I tell

CMs are diamonds, regulars are emeralds, beta are rubies :)

Ah, the profile page probably

@ArtOfCode That would be fun. Don't know if I want to start a religious war, however. ;-)

@JonEricson Or April Fools' :P

lol, people can get too touchy sometimes

6:31 PM
yeah good point

@Rubio oh... so that is what all the question-bumping without me seeing any changes is

@ArtOfCode April Fools would be making the mod text black and hiding their diamonds

there are too few neutral occasions

I've been curious to understand this for a while

@ArtOfCode Shhhhhhh. ;-)

6:32 PM
@ffao Probably not; it's not very prevalent. But it does happen from time to time and it is weird.

@dcfyj <marquee><blink>

@JonEricson That's a lot of diamonds on your profile. It wouldn't hurt to drop some of them around here

@ArtOfCode there's a user script on StackApps for that

Sid
So.... after googling what this St. Patrick's Day thing was all about, I see it is some sort of a religious custom. Why would there be any religious war over that?

@Mithrandir oh I'm sure. Or I could just throw three lines of CSS into Stylish :)
@Sid St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland

6:34 PM
@Sid I've never heard St Patty's referred to as a "religious custom" just as an excuse to drink

is there any occasion where it is neutral where we could have some fun?

@incesterror21 It's the cost of being an employee. Gotta carry around a bunch of responsibility.

@dcfyj precisely what I hear it's about as well :P

@BeastlyGerbil Never!

6:35 PM
@BeastlyGerbil we can have some fun today, is it any religious holiday today?

ooh maybe a stack exchange anniversary?

probably

we have winter bash, we should have some sort of SE celebration

We would have to change the diamonds to eggs on easter, stars on christmas and maybe some muslim thing as well

yeah, winterbash does hats, maybe SEDAY could do socks?

6:37 PM
@incesterror21 yeah... I think I favour the approach of "not getting into it" :)
:( I tried to add a userstyle to make usernames 14px green Comic Sans but Ubuntu doesn't have Comic Sans

@ArtOfCode userscript request: link to chat profile on main user on non-mod sites

@Mithrandir wait, what

@ArtOfCode you asked for it ;) (I needed to write that so that I can find it later)

so on sites where you're not a mod (why only those?), add a link to a user's chat profile on their main-site user profile?

see, that's why I don't use Linux, I don't think I could bear to use an OS that does not have Comic Sans

6:41 PM
@Rubio Honestly, I'm not sure. Perfectionism is pretty much the only option unless they just want to bump the question for some reason.

@ArtOfCode I mean, that's where I need it for. I don't mind it on the mod site(s). But yeah

@Deusovi The most recent case: answered the question (as first answerer); deleted their own answer 4 seconds later; some few hours later another answer was posted by someone else, which then was ✔ Accepted; meanwhile, the edits on the still-deleted answer continue.

@Mithrandir I'm just thinking it might as well be on all sites

@Deusovi Or simply no desire for reputation (both real and digital). Although that raises the question why answer in the first place

anyway, that's gonna take me about 20 minutes, I'd guess

Q: Star crossed lovers

ForkliftA love note, found at the scene of their remains, from one to the other: My love, Complete me. Dive into me. Stay until you're soft. Just crumble to pieces. We're the gift for the giver, the monster's delight. I see past your eyes and into your soul. But our love, as sweet as it is, wi...

@ArtOfCode well yeah, I was just thinking of where I need it for

ah. is this nautilus?

(And why bother to keep refining, if they're not going to publish it)

I have also noticed some odd behaviour from them

Ping me when you're done, please, so I can install it later :)

6:43 PM
If I wanted to say their name I would have. ;)

@ArtOfCode There's lots of codes going on on your site! Any particular favourite (language)?

@incesterror21 Hm? Which site would that be?

@rubio sorry :P

Favourite is probably Ruby, but most proficient probably Python

Well yeah. This is particularly weird

6:45 PM
or JS

@ArtOfCode User profile ofc and there's also the artofcode.co.uk

@incesterror21 Heh. I need to get round to finishing that site off

You should add some kind of resumee/cv there

aye, could do
just a matter of finding time to do all this stuff

Currently studying = time enough
@ArtOfCode I may have a question soon. How can I get in contact? hello@art... ?

6:52 PM
@n_palum 1, 2 3

@BeastlyGerbil I think I get what you're getting at

see the examples
I really need to change that definition

@incesterror21 yep, that'll work

Yeah the definition should be tweaked, I constantly get mixed up with what is and isn't a rebus

(for anyone confused, the rebus tag wiki says that a rebus has to be an image, which is wrong)

6:52 PM
How about something like this?
"In a rebus puzzle, images and letters are arranged in a certain way to clue parts of a word or phrase."

that sounds so nonspecific as to be unhelpful

I think and should be replaced as 'and/or'
and yeah agree with scon

yeah, I'd considered it, but "and/or" is clunky

@BeastlyGerbil I didn't even know about image rebuses until I came here

google def: 'a puzzle in which words are represented by combinations of pictures and individual letters'

6:56 PM
"A visual puzzle where images or letters give clues to parts of a word or phrase based on their position relative to each other?"
the issue with that is something like this:
^ a rebus for REDONE

I would've thought "Big One"

A form of wordplay involving symbolic replacements visually creating a word or phrase

How about: 'A puzzle that involves trying to figure out a word or phrase from an image and/or set of characters that gives clues to parts of the word or phrase, using wordplay.'

The types of rebuses I know are like this: air air air air air air
Which is a rebus for AIRLINE

So a rebus includes words, images and their structure/orientation somehow
positions

yup

this is hard work finding a definition actually

In the most general sense, properties that are more than just directly reading the words

like this one:

WEAR
--------
LONG

(again, my color example doesn't depend on positioning)
