2:10 AM
Mornin'!

Hi!

2 hours later…
3:55 AM
!'ninroM

4:42 AM
@Bob yesterday I used a long pole (technically a mop minus the head) with a Samsung J3-V duct taped to it, to take pictures of debris in a gutter so I could verify there was debris stuck in there that needed to be removed :P
actually just put it on video record with a 10 minute screen off timeout, and duct taped in an area along the back chassis where the camera wasn't

Bob
4:53 AM
@allquixotic ...I just use a ladder :P
well, sometimes ladder + arm + camera

5:14 AM
lol
My mom's camera can be controlled from a phone
so in theory I could duct tape it to a pole and view it directly

@allquixotic cough Selfie Stick cough

5:33 AM
@Rahul2001 most selfie sticks won't reach dozens of feet (8m+) into the air

@allquixotic lol, you can link them together
I once did for a photography project
It's pretty cool

the selfie stick probably also gives you a good mount.

6:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, they have those screws. And a uh, the, nut (inverse-screws?) on the handle end, so you can connect one to another.

Morning

Threads I guess

7:03 AM
@allquixotic I just found a bunch of my old Dawngate screenshots. :(

1 hour later…
8:18 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy "See" would be the right word here.
Good show by the way. Started good but went downhill starting from season 3 I think.
Hmm I expected more from "Suicide Squad"...

Bob
8:40 AM
Hm.
My YouTube content location somehow got set to Singapore... I blame @JourneymanGeek :P

Had it too long time ago. Didn't know it's JourneymanGeek's fault...

Bob
lol

9:47 AM
@Bob Heh... didn't @OliverSalzburg have that problem as well?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Did he? o.O
Oh, so he did O_O
Feb 21 at 21:13, by Oliver Salzburg
Some time ago I asked why my YouTube would show Singapore as the content region for me. Turns out, there's a content region selector at the bottom of the page. No idea why it was on SG

Bob
Yup, definitely @JourneymanGeek's fault :P

YOU CANNOT PROVE ANYTHING!

Probably sending doctored YouTube links through chat.

9:52 AM
naw, we're hacking your networks with carefully timed tailwags.

1 hour later…
do you think a P3 thats been in the shed for 14 years will still work?

@Burgi You have a plane in your shed? :/
The P-1 Hawk (Curtiss Model 34) was a 1920s open-cockpit biplane fighter aircraft of the United States Army Air Corps. An earlier variant of the same aircraft had been designated PW-8 prior to 1925. == Design and development == === PW-8 === The Curtiss P-1 Hawk was the first US Army Air Service aircraft to be assigned the "P" (Pursuit) designation which replaced seven designations for pursuit aircraft, including "PW" (for "Pursuit, Water-cooled engine"). thats a p1

> P-3 and P-5 test variants
The P-3 Hawk was similar to the P-1 Hawk but with a radial R-1340-3 Wasp radial engine.

Pentium 3?
Possible
But the easiest way to check is to plug it in and hit the on switch

11:26 AM

Get off my lawn. ;p
He means a pentium III

there is no cap leakage or crap on the mobo

@JourneymanGeek [citation needed]
DCI-P3, or DCI/P3, is a common RGB color space for digital movie projection from the US-American film industry. In the CIE 1931 xy chromaticity diagram the DCI-P3 color space covers 45.5% of all chromaticities and 86.9% of Pointer’s gamut. In the CIE 1976 u’v’ chromaticity diagram the coverage is 41.7% and 85.5% respectively. The blue primary color is the same as sRGB and Adobe RGB; the red primary color is a monochromatic light source and has a wavelength of 615 nm. DCI-P3 was defined by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) organization and published by the Society of Motion Picture and Television...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek what's a R!? o.O

11:36 AM
No idea but it seems scary

Bob
@Burgi Ooh, it actually has a fan :P

why wouldn't it?
Later model too. socket, not slot

Bob
I still have that old IBM P3 kicking around. The one with the slot and no fan :P

(early PIIIs were slot 1s.)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek slot 1*

11:40 AM
lol my old PIII was a viglan, same thing there
not looking so bad too

Bob
still (five years later) ahven't gotten around to trying to boot it

Happens a lot ;p

Bob
wait. it... IT HAS USB
now I'm halfway tempted to try a live usb

Yup
1.1 most likely not bootable.

Bob
assuming the bios can actually do usb boot
@JourneymanGeek hm. well, there's always plop?

11:44 AM
yup

Bob
wait. did 1.1 even do mass storage? :S
brings back memories of installing mass storage drivers on 98 :P

It did

Bob
the other hard part is finding a VGA-capable screen :P

but was terribly slow
shrug or an adaptor

Bob
@JourneymanGeek bah, buying hardware?

11:46 AM
lol
true
I have 2 VGA capable screens ._.
my 12 year old plasma TV, and the crossover ;p

Bob
think the main thing stopping me from bothering is, well... there's not much I can do with it
and I'm pretty sure it's less powerful than the rpi, so...
@JourneymanGeek crossover: all the ports!

actually...
No DVI ;p
;p
3 HDMI, one DP, one VGA...

Bob
o.O

all the HDMI is 2.0 too

12:10 PM
it powers on but has a red flashing light and no video output

@JourneymanGeek it should come "beta" sticker
(old people joke)

have you really forgotten the last time 2.0 was big:

0_0
lol
@tereško basically means it does 4k60 over HDMI where supported

Am I the only person that keeps old monitors hanging around "just in case" ?

12:23 PM
... as I said - old people joke

I have at least one that doesn't even support DVI

@bertieb I tried that, but I had to throw out the TFT thing
it was taking up too much room

Fair enough
I can't bring myself to throw stuff away (cf. data hoarding, buying Steam games that never get played etc)

@bertieb most of those stopped working
I do have a "working" SGI octane where I lost the root password ;p

Also fair reason to throw them away :P
Not that it stops me... I have a HannsG that I've replaced half the caps (inverter board I think) but not yet done the power supply baord caps

12:26 PM
lol

De/soldering caps on PCBs makes me antsy

I've tried that

(poor eyesight)

then more caps failed.
I also ran a PC I pulled from a dumpster for a while

Oh dear
Aye?

12:27 PM
lol
core 2 duo, roughly when sandy and nehalem were new

Still seems relatively reasonable

yup
dead video card, no hard drive, no monitor.
Bought the cheapest monitor I could live with, a boring hard drive, yanked the video card and ran it with integrated graphics ;p

Ah, a mere bagatelle

Q: Is it normal for a Dell Inspiron 530 to have is fan to spin up 3 times before it POSTS?

Journeyman GeekI picked up an used Dell 530 desktop. It seems to work, but it has an odd pattern of powering up the case fan (which might be faulty - it sounds like a jet engine) 3 times, while blinking the power light. No other fan seems to activate during the time, and it goes silent after that. I'm wonderi...

Awesome fun

Well played, no reaosn not to do so

12:29 PM
lol
video card was glitching, then I realised the darned thing had a vga port under a cap

> I picked up an used Dell 530 desktop
That's a nice euphemism :P

From the effective equivilent of the curb.
;p

Well, I assume you carried it home so technically it was 'picked up'... ;P

Speaking of dead hard drives
badblocks was running fine, 0/0/0 most of the way through the 4th pass

12:32 PM
actually, am likely to start thinking of upgrading my current PC the moment I'm employed again
she's essentially what I upgraded the dell to...
though the only part I used on the dell is probably my keyboard

I wake up the morning and there are 60-odd unreadable sectors, and the reallocated sector count has leapt up to the 800s

lol
backup data

Knackered with a capital 'F' I think..

then, how brave do you feel? ;p

I feel that I might be able to justify getting rid of the drive!
(no data on it as badblocks was run in destructive mode)
Data was migrated off, thankfully

12:34 PM
oh
reformat! For science!
lol
or you have a DOID

Power
Red or
Yellow*
4 flashes
every 1 second,
or 2 flashes 1 second
apart followed by a 2
second pause
CPU thermal shutdown
fixable?

Hah :P Don't tempt me... part of me wants to keep the drive around as it technically hasn't 'failed' yet
@JourneymanGeek DOID?
Dead on investigation disk?
Dead [o]array of inexpensive disks?

drive of impending doom
@Burgi new thermal paste maybe

@JourneymanGeek Heh, even better :P

12:50 PM
(DOID was a hard drive on my laptop that failed tests and was replaced under warranty. I got to keep it. In explicably it keeps running until it fails. Then when I dig it up months later. Bloody thing runs again...)
So naturally I put it in my 3rd brix...
I figure the bad mojo will cancel each other out
2

Sod's law; it'll work when you expect it to fail and fail when you expect it to work

Bob
@JourneymanGeek My DOID turned into a DOD after the format :P
@JourneymanGeek Did it work? :P

@Bob so far
I don't really run the brix much

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's only 30W TDP... then again, that heatsink is tiny
@JourneymanGeek I'll swap it for one of these convertibles? :P

@Bob or the thermal sensor is malfunctioning
@Bob I've had 2 die ;p

Bob
12:57 PM
Funnily enough, I wouldn't mind having a little server, but all I have is a pile of portables.

I'd be tempted but its a terrible trade.
I would not run that 24/7

Bob
And the hardest part of 'little server' is, well... storage.

lol
1tb + boot works for me

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, I'd want redundancy.
About the only kind of home server I need is, well, storage.

@Bob hm. Then a NUC class machine is the wrong form factor ;p

Bob
1:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek ...yea

In theory I think I can swap the m.2 wifi card for a second SSD, get a bigger msata card ...

Bob
OTOH I've pretty much settled on external (USB) HDDs as the cheapest $/GB

This quite literally is designed around very transient data, relatively low power, and smalls size

This question:
9
Q: Is there a command which can elevate the Command Prompt in place?

user2064000On *nix systems, you can get a root shell like so: $ su # or 'sudo -s' # The root shell is spawned in place within the same terminal. I'm trying to find something that does a similar, in-place elevation on the Windows Command Prompt. In other words, it should not spawn a new window or display...

user226528
Huh, I was reading that just now.

Has 694 views. It's not on the HNQ, but was asked only 20 hours ago. It's racking up views pretty quick. How is it possible to get that many views without being on the HNQ?

user226528
There isn't, but there is a command that can launch a new Command Prompt as admin.

user226528
What's HNQ?

1:18 PM
Its on HNQ

That's impossible. This question has to be on the HNQ and there must be some sort of rolling update to the lists

No one really knows how it works but its there.
;p

So you can see it? I'm going to try a different browser then.

its also in random order...

Well I'll be. There it is. I thought I was going crazy. Going to refill my coffee this very moment before Monday gets the better of me.

1:27 PM
lol
For someone who dosen't care about em, I keep an eye out ;p
Mostly for fun stuff on other sites ;p
tho at this rate, thanks to a HNQ, I might be overtaking Wil this week \o/
Then I can finally see about pushing John T out of 4th place. (Number 2 and 3 are both active and awesome folk, so they're cool ;p)

user226528
Question: Can I ask a tricky social question here?

@FleetCommand Is the tricky question the tricky question?

user226528
Well, I'll take the silence to mean "uncertainty".

user226528
Oh, wait. Should I? Historically, silence means consent.

user226528
Qui tacet consentire videtur, ubi loqui debuit ac potuit (He who is silent is taken to consent. He should have spoken when he was able to.)

1:46 PM
@FleetCommand Actually: "He who is silent seems to consent, where he ought to speak, and was able to"

user226528
Google Translate, clearly.

user226528
Although, now that I think more, in s**-ed classes, they taught us that silence definitely doesn't mean consent... under the threat of going to jail.

What's the etiquette for answering cross-posted questions which are on-topic on either site?
There was one posted here which I think I can answer, but also posted earlier to U&L

@FleetCommand "s**-ed"?
@FleetCommand Obviously.

user226528
@bertieb Answer both and reap the reward twice.

1:50 PM
@FleetCommand I kinda assumed if you shouldnt crosspost a quesiton, you also shouldn't crosspost an answer :P
I'd rather answer it here as I haven't any activity on U&L
but I'd even more rather answer it where it won't be deleted :P
That said, if it is acceptable practice to post an answer to both and wait for one to be deleted I'll do that
It just seemed like a slightly facetious comment :P

@bertieb the rules on "crossposts" are kinda very oddly informal
that is to say, I don't actually have a clue what to do with those

OH! I HAVE A SOLUTION! YAYYYY!

user226528
What? What?

2:04 PM
@Burgi that's one of the community managers ;p

lol

@JourneymanGeek Can I use that excuse in court if I fall afoul?

@bertieb no idea ;p

"In my defence, even JG said he wasn't sure..."

@bertieb I'm nowhere near a definitive source though

2:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah but if you don't know WHAT HOPE DO WE HAVE how do we know? :P

A: What to do with cross-site duplicates?

Robert CartainoYou can't assume that all users will be on all sites. Each site has to stand on its own merits and you have to treat each site as a separate community. If a question is inappropriate on one site, users now have alternate places to go with it. It's a nice convenience if moderators choose to trans...

^ this guy is a definitive source
@Burgi I don't work for SE ;p
also meta.stackexchange.com/a/45859/135565 - Ivo is a current mod. Quack was a mod in the past.
@Burgi I'm a high rep moderator. ;p

lies

Metas are the place for case law, CMs for rulings outside that.
I merely interpret them
lol
If I ever end up working for SE, I'll let you know ;p

2:14 PM
You say that, but I bet there's a small part of you that's tempted to say "I AM THE LAW", Judge Dredd-style

lol
Actually, in most cases community team lets us run things as needed - except in extreme circumstances
I guess I am the law.
Oh my. I AM THE LAW.
2

:D
Didn't that feel good? :P

Naw, slightly scary actually

lol

2:19 PM
If you think about it, my actions have a lot more weight than if I was a regular user ;p

(evil cackle)

And some of the decisions you have to make are hard

It's like being a doctor (they get that "oh crap" moment when they realise decisions have consequences too)

lol
Essentially you need to balance between de-escalation and "the big picture" when it comes to real users.
The fake ones, meh, whack em.
@bertieb Its heavily people management and cat herding ;p

@JourneymanGeek See also: being a doctor :P

2:23 PM
I suppose
90% of it is people coming in with colds...
then... you're wondering, is that guy having a heart attack, or a bad case of gas?
or you're wondering what's the appropriate amount of force to use in a situation

ENOUGH TO SAVE THEIR LIFE

slightly less in yjr us as they are likely to sue you

lol
We just get angry comments and meta posts.
._.
Apparently any complaints about me have been on main meta, not here
whaaat?
ah

i see harry whinging a lot :/

2:36 PM
> Nowadays, the term reactive programming is trending.
^^^ From Packt Book: Learning Reactive Programming with Java 8

@djsmiley2k well, he's an oldtimer, and some of the stuff that we have issues with were fine once

ah ok

He just needs a little reinforcement on those changes
But that's an interesting thing though - something a mod has to work out is the best and fairest way to work with those situations

Man, my new computer science textbook is making my cringe so hard
I want to sit in a corner and cry :(

And I can't see that as 'whinging'. I need to see "Is he right?" and try to find the relevant rules
On the other hand...

2:44 PM
yah

Q: What's our threshold for profanity in comments?

Journeyman GeekI just handled a bunch of flags on older comments, flagging the use of the word "bitch" as "complain" or "is a pain". Now certain words (mostly ones with 4 letters for some reason), I can get - but in this case, it seems like common, generally mildly inoffensive usage - talking about a situation...

This isn't the answers I wanted
But those are the right ones ;p
hm. 3rd day of repcapping from the USB C question <3

@JourneymanGeek All part of "assume good faith", which we should all remind ourselves of :)

yup
until proven otherwise
in which case the booties come off.

Heh
Fair point

With a 'famous' or 'regular' user, good faith is usually a given

3:11 PM
@MichaelFrank :(

> The CPU is the control center for a computer.

@Rahul2001 ? That's vaguely correct

@DavidPostill "vague" defines this book very correctly
The definition of "process" is given as "the actual work being done".

Now that's actually wrong, at least on Windows
Processes are just containers for threads, which run the code

Bob
@BenN eh... specific implementations may, of course, deviate from the theoretical definition

3:44 PM
couldn't be buggered with that P3 so its going to the tip
going to try my celeron 333 which is in worse visual condition...
WOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it exploded
2

what?

the PSU went BANG!!! and sparks flew out of the side
thats going to the tip too, lol

Bob
did you forget the voltage switch? :P

> it exploded
Ah, how those old Pentiums used to run hot...

@Bob no but you did make me check
@bertieb celeron

3:57 PM
Just a little joke; think the P4 was worse for heat than the P3

user image
3

Been $years so my memory may have been bitflipped by cosmic rays since then

if any one wants a P3 733 which needs new thermal paste (probably) or a celeron 333 (of dubious condition) let me know because otherwise they are going to the tip in about 15 mins
@Rahul2001 this celeron is older than you

Save it for Nov 5th and fire it up (heh) again then ? ;P

4:00 PM
@bertieb i don't want it clogging up my flat

Also your municipal domestic waste centre may have a place for recycling computers
Y'know, all them minerals

they do

@Burgi Another joke :P

i was there on saturday with all my ikea boxes
lol, i'm glad my GF wasn't here when i turned on the celeron
it would have made her cry
women are always going "don't do that, its not safe..."
what could possible go wrong with plugging in an 18yo computer that has been stored in the garden shed for the last century

@Burgi I've got another broom if you want to make some more sweeping statements :P

4:05 PM
you can't tell me your SO hasn't given you skeptical looks when you've done DIY/home electronics

shrug My SO was under my car assisting with an oil change last week
Different people are different :)

fair enough
if i go now i can get to my mum's for dinner...
ttyl

@Burgi You have to learn to cook now you have your own place :)

Bob
@Burgi depends how much the shipping costs? :P
@HackToHell ...meh, fancy-ish body but still typical rollerball

Hi. Quick challenge. Make a pic comparing Richard Stallman (RMS) to Zach Galifianakis.
Your time starts now.

I have no idea who the latter is

Oi Pipeloi!

posted on April 17, 2017

I don’t even think it’s NAA.

4:41 PM

I think I did it wrong
grin

@allquixotic I said compare. Not merge. But yeah, I expected that answer.
@bertieb better than allquixotic's attempt.

4:57 PM
@Nick What is the point of this challenge?

@Nick Might have worked better if I'd used roughly similar images ;)

@DavidPostill Someone pointed this out to me today morning and I just wanted to make everyone I know aware of this. Now, none of you will EVER forget this.
@allquixotic It's like the same dude.

@Nick That doesn't really answer the question.
