@MichaelMrozek Outside of the rudeness of the immediate cross post
@MichaelMrozek wtf is atwood doing closing this? I thought we decided ubuntu was not offtopic?

2:42 AM
@xenoterracide There's one user who crossposts everything on UL, AU, and SU; I'm not sure why, but I've not said anything about it before
@xenoterracide I think he was confused; he thought it was an Ubuntu-specific post (which we are migrating, I believe), but I don't think it actually is
We're migrating anything that only makes sense on Ubuntu, and AU is migrating anything that makes no sense on Ubuntu

3:00 AM
rchern just dug this post up from meta:

I think I'm going to change the FAQ to say when posts should be here versus AU and to mention that you shouldn't cross-post (which I didn't even know they had an official position on)

Sorry about the cross-post. I need to learn some SO-etiquette, quickly.

@iamsid It's fine, I was literally not aware there was an official policy on it until about 6 minutes ago

@xeno Ok, I tossed something in the FAQ to hopefully clarify

6:12 AM
@MichaelMrozek ah I see, so we can migrate now?

@xenoterracide Closers can't, we don't have migration paths yet (it usually takes a little while after launch). Mods have been able to migrate anywhere for a few weeks

@MichaelMrozek hah, I never noticed, but good to know.
@MichaelMrozek do you know if things like shell questions on SO, SF, and SU will be migrated to us?

If they're off-topic there then I would expect so; we've gotten four posts from SO since the mod migration option was added

oic
well offtopic can be relative
what once wasn't offtopic may not be offtopic

:-( I tried to follow the first of the links you sent and realized I no longer have the 10k tools since we launched.

6:18 AM
I don't know what's happening with on-topic posts that are more on-topic here; I would expect them to stay on the source site, but they might migrate
@StevenD Yeah, people losing privileges is depressing :-\

I think that is the only thing I lost
so it isn't too bad

True. 10k tools aren't super useful on UL anyway

@StevenD yeah probably mods and @Gilles only

Tshepang was talking about how he finally hit 1k to edit a few days ago

@MichaelMrozek what is that like 1500 or 3k now?

Editing is 2k; closing is 3k

I can't be bothered to remember such things

This question about the old unix book with a black cover is eating away at me.

6:22 AM
@StevenD eating away how?

@StevenD I'm curious which book it is too

Well, I really want to find it because it sounds good. And, I feel that between Google and the university library websites I have access to that I am just a well formed search away from finding it.

woot this room got a design up date too, thanks to @balpha
btw the meta gravatar has been fixed, you may have to manually refresh this image:

@Jin I really love this image
what's the font?

Jin
@Tshepang you love serif font don't you? :)
it's Georgia

is serif similar?

Jin
i tried a few different serifs I liked, but Georgia turned out the best for header imo. same font as the question titles

with fonts, I only know as far as Times New Roman and Arial :)
oh, so it's a family of fonts
ok

Jin
5:05 PM
there are many serifs typefaces I like, Palatino, Hoefler text, Baskerville etc

oh, I see
so Times New Roman is part of Serif family as well

Jin
yes
on tex.stackexchange.com the title loge "TEX" is in Hoefler Text, and the question titles are in Palatino.

I think tex.stackexchange.com is my favorite SE site

Jin
@StevenD I certainly had fun designing it. It's really an eye opening experience designing each SE site.
I didn't know how powerful TeX is, especially with Tikz

Yeah, I just started learning a bit of Tikz and have been blown away. I've don't most of my document authorship in LaTeX, but rarely go beyond the basic classes.

5:13 PM
@StevenD u like the design, or just the site?
@Jin those fonts r really nice: hoefler and palatino

Both. I think that the design really matches the content.
The site feels tex-y

Jin
@StevenD that's the goal for each site's design. some are easily to do than others. I actually had a hard time with the Unix one... since it's too generic

@Jin how long on average does it take u to design the first iteration of a site

Jin
@Tshepang different everytime. can be a day, to a week

I think that the design here came together really nicely in the end. I think that if this was a "Linux" site, then your very first iteration was spot on.

Jin
5:16 PM
but in the past few months i've been doing one site per week, from design to launch.

looking at the sites, I really love the designs of game dev & cooking

Jin
the latest design proposal i posted is the GIS site.

Q: Bolder question title font

GillesI find the question title font too thin, on question pages and to some extent on the /questions as well. The titles don't stand out enough to my tastes. The same font is used on CSTheory. Out of curiosity
Is this answer unaccurate, wrong or poorly explained?

A: Why do we use "./" to execute a file?

badpa.out is the default output name for a program compiled with gcc. You can change it with the -o option. You need the ./ bit to tell the shell where the executable is, since the current directory is unlikely to be in $PATH. You can use which to get the full path to "other commands."

It received a tickmark, but the other answers have many more upvotes.
I guess there's a stink somewhere, help me see the light :)

@badp maybe because it didn't evolve with the question?
I was wondering what u were on about talking about a.out

@Tshepang Well, it was there before @Stefan edited it out.

I think just get rid of the a.out thing
to better match the final question
else I dont see any other problem

Oh well, thanks.

I upvoted them all
though I wish there was just one canonical answer

10:20 PM
@Tshepang eh, they pretty much say the same thing

yeah
when I see a situation like that, I just wish @Gilles would just come and clean up the mess
his answers are so damn thorough, so much that they make all others useless in comparison

eh, this was such as simple one, even I could answer it :)

@badp Where do you think all my rep comes from? :)

@MichaelMrozek People saying "oooh, he has a diamond, he must be right"

How right they are

10:25 PM
@MichaelMrozek being modest, are we?

@MichaelMrozek same place as mine
@badp you seem to be under the delusion that more upvotes = better answer

@Gilles It's a "code stink." Maybe there's no problem, but there likely is.

@Gilles yeah, not a very perfect system; ppl often vote for what seems most interesting
it's also sad that a vote is just 5 (or 10) points
there are posts where I wish I could do much more than that

Obviously, when you upvote @MichaelMrozek, it should be worth 500 reps.

Seems fair

10:28 PM
@badp So on this answer, I think Simon's is a bit more pedagogical, but nothing to write home about

sometimes u find a one-line answer (that is correct), and then an essay that delve into the nitty-grittys
and both gives the answerer the same rep
:(

@Tshepang No, because the more thorough answer will get more upvotes.
At least, it's supposed to.

@badp I think it's the opposite, people tend to prefer short answers
Hmm, maybe less so on Unix than on SO

@Gilles I've seen ur answers getting lower votes, than other's shorter ones
and we all know that Gilles == more correct :)

@Tshepang well, I know sometimes they're too complicated or just rambling
What annoys me is when a wrong answer gets upvoted to heaven

10:32 PM
I've at least once been guilty of accepting a shorter answer

Q: How to convert an int[] array to a List?

TshepangI expected this code to display true: int[] array = {1, 2}; System.out.println(Arrays.asList(array).contains(1));

but this was because I couldn't really understand the more popular one

Accepted answers are different
Usually you pick the first that gets you out of the mess

it was delving a bit too much into the topic

Other people are (supposed to be) more interested in learning what's going on
so they'll find the longer answer more informative

@badp yeah, makes sense
@Gilles bad answers that are upvoted should be edited with a big read the comments; this answer has incorrect info
but only after alerting the answerer
good idea?
maybe this question is already on meta.SO?

Q: What's your most unexpectedly upvoted question/answer?

ThomasI think most of us have seen it. You post something innocuous, it receives an upvote, then another, then another, and before you know it you've got another handful of badges pinned onto your chest. Now I know that rep shouldn't matter and all that, but I also know that I'm only human. I do have ...

Q: How to deal with upvoted yet clearly wrong answers

gbnThese 2 questions have clearly wrong answers with upvotes. And they're still getting votes. The log file one especially could be tried out, it would fail, but someone still voted it up. A downvote and comment has no effect. Like we have "vote to close", what about a "vote to delete" for answers...

@MichaelMrozek that sux
u mods get a lot of eye-sore

We have far less spam than most sites, it's kind of amazing really

isn't there a way to really delete this junk?

10:41 PM
@Tshepang Why'd you want to?

@Tshepang Like...remove it from the database?

it's just noise

It is "deleted"

yeah, delete from the DB

There's no "really delete" button
Maybe guys with direct DB access could do that... but why?

10:42 PM
eyesore

It's invisible :)
Except for poor @Gilles

@Tshepang Some custom CSS can easily hide that

@MichaelMrozek I'm aware

something like .post.deleted { display: none; }

that's why I said u mods suffer
oh, if one can play with css, all's well then

10:44 PM
That said, deleted answer are a good memento -- that's the kind of crap that will get on the site if you let your guard down.

damn, my question has now received > 1k2 views and 25 votes
I envy the guy who answered it :)

We merge blatant spam answers into one account, so we can keep track of them easily. So far there are 7 posts, so we're doing pretty well :)

@MichaelMrozek oh, that's really low
just 7?

Like I said, we've had pretty much no problems. We've never suspended anyone, and I think we've e-mailed maybe 3 people
@Tshepang Wow; the post with the second highest view velocity after yours has 91 views :)

Q: Can I make `cut` change a file in place?

Hank GayThe man page doesn't give me much hope, but I'm hope it's an undocumented (and/or GNU-specific) feature.

10:48 PM
@MichaelMrozek is that a mod-only feature?

@Tshepang 10k tool, @Gilles can see it.

why would they limit it to 10k users
maybe it's expensive?

@Tshepang It's a moderation tool, to help you see where trouble might lurk.
Usually questions that are too active are bad

@badp like poll questions?

@Tshepang yeah.
