How old does my new account need to be in order for me to place pixels in r/place?

It should be created before the 31 March
> Only accounts created before 31-03-2017 may place tiles

That sucks

can't work on it anymore because i have to go, but will try to do stuff tomorrow
@KritixiLithos bot prevention

@ASCII-only Implying the logo will still be there tomorrow

1:28 PM
Outer border has been completed

I totally did not just spend 8 straight hours debugging typo ;_;

Yeah typos are evil

indeed they are

indeed
And I know a thing so evil that is even more evil than typos
semicolons.

@SIGSEGV What; do; you; have; against; semicolons?

1:43 PM
S;e;m;i;c;o;l;o;n;s; ;a;r;e; ;g;o;o;d;

@SIGSEGV Why do you hate semicolons; they are great.
Real question is why C developer made it semicolon instead of .

Because . was already used?
> Oh, and if your question was why the C folks chose the semicolon character specifically, I'd guess it's probably because C came out around the time ALGOL, PASCAL and PL/I and they all used semicolons as either separators or terminators.

@TuxCopter well they should have used -> and =>

Why are you speaking in engrish 1_1

ಠ_ಠ

1:46 PM
@Downgoat They are the 2016 Hide-and-Seek champion and doesn't seem to come out of boredom from the core of your code at all

@SIGSEGV solution is to stop using C and use real language that has optional semicolons like VSL

At least missing semicolons are indicated by the compiler
While typos technically are but really they are indectetable

@TuxCopter not in Objective-C runtime
it uses KVC
which basically means objects are basically string: value dictionaries

Java > Obj C

user165474
@Downgoat Correct me if I'm wrong, but are Javascript objects pretty much also string: value dictionaries?

1:50 PM
Assembly > C > C++ > Java > Obj C

@KritixiLithos JavaScript > Everything else than JavaScript

Assembly ftw

user165474
Citation needed

@TuxCopter Nope, lotsa transistors ftw

@HyperNeutrino no, those are still objects, not dictionaries

user165474
1:52 PM
Oh ok

@TuxCopter If we are talking byte count this is true

Actually assembly is very verbose
It's machine code that is compact

Machine code is as semantically verbose as you can get however

@Downgoat Obj C is more verbose than Java? o_O

Transistors FTW!!

1:54 PM
@Downgoat Yes but because a lot of things are 1-2 bytes (especially in the x86 family), the verboseness is not a big deal in big programs

@KritixiLithos Idk, I'd say both are equal

user165474
Could we theoretically use only diodes and switches and never use transistors? (I'm not thinking this through right now so it might be a really bad idea)

This is the name of a function: initWithEnableFan:enableAirConditioner:enableClimateControl:enableAutoMode:airC‌irculationMode:fanSpeedIndex:fanSpeedPercentage:relativeFanSpeedSetting:temperatu‌re:relativeTemperatureSetting:climateZone:

user165474
o_O

@HyperNeutrino Yes, actually very old computers were powered by relay-diode logic

user165474
1:55 PM
Ooh cool.

@TuxCopter 0/10 tried making half adder with diode and did not go well

@Downgoat my page is scrolling to the right now whenever someone posts a message

only result was weird smelling diode

@Downgoat I say diode and relay

does anyone know if a zener starts to smoke, if it is still usable?

1:55 PM
Anyone here have a Reddit account older than yesterday that is not already working on our logo?

Silicon atoms ftw?

@SIGSEGV No quarks ftw

@TuxCopter What type? strange quarks?

uh idk

Higgs bosons ftw?

user165474
2:03 PM
Neutrinos ftw?

gluons ftw?

@HyperNeutrino Which ones? Electron, muon or tau?

user165474
@SIGSEGV Electron Neutrinos ftw

ok

user165474
Brainf**k ftw.

2:12 PM
DENNIS FTW!!!

Is anyone working on the /r/place ppcg logo?

@TuxCopter wait what

After this, how about we fix the lattice around our logo

^
Make sure to refresh before placing anything

2:55 PM
Anyone in here do UIKit
Stupid UITapGestureRecogninzer or a UIGestureRecognizer both fail :(

3:20 PM
@TuxCopter Now yes

Let's do this.
Where are we going to build it?

See above

^ for reference

@PhiNotPi What's your Reddit account called?

@LegionMammal978 right now I'm "contraharmonic"

3:31 PM
@PhiNotPi You have older alts? Good

Yeah I have like 5 accounts

oh right, alts. Firing them up

You know, now that I think about it, the darker shade of blue might actually be more accurate

oh shet

We can't go back now

3:45 PM
Oh well, maybe we can change it once we're done with the actual pattern

I actually think this color is good.
or.. .eehh maybe the slightly darker shade is better.

@PhiNotPi but then we need more work :P

I think the current one is fine, but regardless, let's first finish it

We'll do it afterward, yeah

Here's an idea for an esolang that I just thought up:

3:53 PM
Yeah?

The empty language?

At first, I was thinking of a language like ><> but operates in 3D space. I called it Orca. The 3D space is composed of "layers", like in an ocean. The orca is able to move across and between these layers easily. I extended this 3D space to the stack as well. The stack is composed of 2-dimensional arrays (hence this makes the stack 3D). There isn't much of a benefit for using numbers in this kind of a stack, but strings work well in this type of stack. Each character represent a separate entity in the 2D array, so that newlines will come over to the next line.
(I'm not done)

Hey, random people are actually helping filling the logo with blue
That's cool

Contrary to common belief, there are actually some nice people.

@TuxCopter I'm getting side-tracked on removing that brown swastika next to us

4:03 PM
But why stop at just 3 dimensions? Let's go on to the 4th one: time. (I haven't thought of a name for this lang yet) Each "frame" of the pointer's movement will be recorded as an "event" occurring at that specific time. The pointer's location, direction, stack will all be recorded by the interpreter. This allows the pointer to access its previous self's stack, location and direction. Maybe even its future selves as well (don't have an idea yet of how this is going to be implemented)! You can speed up time, skip frames, and also travel back in time.

There's a swastika next to us?

Slightly to the top right; it's mostly removed now

@L3viathan just report to mods reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fplace
Oh ninja'd

Does anyone know how TI-nspire programs are scored?

@LegionMammal978 Yeah, /u/hjroh0315

@SIGSEGV Are you helping with the PPCG logo on r/place already?

@betseg It will last forever within our heart (And the wikipedia)
@LegionMammal978 Yup

I put some pixels there

Only 4 pixels to go!
2!

Just placed the last pixel

:D

I say we don't attempt to change any colors, and instead focus on the surrounding area.

It needs to be on a white background
Or something else that stands out

Black background would be easier

4:37 PM
k

Let's extend the green lattice around it

I think green lattice is good, just don't place any green pixels that would actually touch the logo.

also what is betseg doing to the tip of the bubble

4:40 PM
idk
the first three extra were accidental

@KritixiLithos subtract the size of an empty document from the size of your document
anyone want to help fix the a at (979, 1)? :P

@ConorO'Brien Empty document: 2K. With program: 2K.
That's why I'm asking

RIP ppcg.ga, first ppcg.lol, then this.
WTH is "Freenom World"?

5:06 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer probably the DNS server that was behind ppcg.ga
Once a domain expires, there's a certain period of time between expiration and when it actually returns back to the global pool, during which your registrar still has control over it. A lot of registrars park the domain with their own ads.

"Your internet connection is too slow + Your browsing activities are used for ads" did that DNS stuff just imply what my internet connection is and what my browsing activities are used for?

@EriktheOutgolfer As I explained in the comment...

Which comment?

@LuisMendo thanks for making me rethink the output format :P

@EriktheOutgolfer So?

@Mego I typed p<enter> on the address bar to go to PPCG. I saw that stuff. I tried to go to cod<enter> instead. Then, I realized that just over an hour before that domain expired. Then I wished RIP.
It was my golfiest way to go to PPCG, since I reserve c<enter> for coursera.org.

I have one Chrome user for ppcg and programming and stuff, and another for school stuff
But I still can get to PPCG from my school user by typing co<enter>

April Fools

@LegionMammal978

@TuxCopter The cooldown is probably based on current load, it might go down as time goes on and fewer people are active, but it might also go up if the admins want to slowly kill r/place.

Let's fix?

Did we get the PCG logo in somewhere?

5:57 PM

Ooh look, NASCAR. Should've figured that'd come eventually, since we've had F1 for as long as I can remember

@TuxCopter Whoa. That thing is bigger than I imagined.

@TuxCopter :D

@betseg you mean turn it into phi?

Should we make a black / dark grey border around PCG on /r/place?
Or a white one?

5:59 PM
There's already a black boredr

@PhiNotPi no, fix the decimals

@TuxCopter That's part of the logo.
I mean a bigger one.

Already black, we'll be expanding the green lattice around it (but not next to its border)
@wizzwizz4 Can't really fit a much bigger one in that space
Besides, it would just be more work for us

Does anyone know how to grep for lines of a file?
(Probably not using grep...)

Grep for lines?

6:02 PM
@wizzwizz4 ???
grep 'pattern' filename

File A is a dictionary. I want to match any line of File A in $1.

@JanDvorak Actually it's normal sized for its era

suppressing urge to advertise in ad-free place

Yeah, but I underestimated how old it is

Whoever's u/bigb1 (is it you, @PhiNotPi?), we're keeping a 1-pixel black border around the logo

I expected more from Java. Seriously; only 78 bytes? That's not even the 128 mark!

@DownChristopher I believe the term is "Ninja'd".
@EriktheOutgolfer Thanks.

@wizzwizz4 Wat or Check Out Tomato

@DownChristopher I dunno... Last time I went in there it took me a few hours to recover... *shudder*.

6:25 PM
@wizzwizz4 there

@DownChristopher Thanks.

How did you even... get that char?

Wait idk
I never put it there

@DownChristopher I unoneboxed it using that... Sorry for the confusion.

6:28 PM
@wizzwizz4 ohhh makes sense

@ETHproductions By having a nice keyboard.

@wizzwizz4 You don't need that to unonebox.
I think that you can use [link_to_image](link_to_image) for the same effect.

Good people of the tnb, what are some useful methods I should add to the standard library of my language, I welcome both suggestions for juoke methods and serious features. THe language in question is SILOS github.com/rjhunjhunwala/S.I.L.O.S

On my machine that's not a visible character...
@RohanJhunjhunwala A map function.

On my machine it looks like a middle dot.

6:30 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer You have a non-standard extended ASCII set.
In UTF-8 it's .

@wizzwizz4 it's an esolang that essentially mimics assembly, there is no native list type

@wizzwizz4 I have Ubuntu 16.04 with Chrome 57.0.2987.133, maybe that's the reason.

@RohanJhunjhunwala String manipulation. (Don't shout me down; null-terminated strings that are sequential in memory can be used.)

@wizzwizz4 I'm thinking of adding that within, the interpreter itself, but that would be pretty cool to implement, in assemby
Suggestion accepted
@wizzwizz4 do you perhaps also have any simple ideas

@RohanJhunjhunwala Memory-mapped I/O.

6:35 PM
@wizzwizz4 that is already implemented within the inerpreter.
"String" Input maps to a block starting at 256, and numerical input to the variable marked I (which just a sopt on the heap)

@wizzwizz4 It's not 0xA0, it's 0x81

@ETHproductions Oops... I typed the wrong one. :-/
@RohanJhunjhunwala Subroutines.
They push the program counter onto the stack.
A return instruction will pop the program counter.

GOSUB exists already.

Oh, yeah. I must've skipped that part.

Unfortunately, they must be "wrapped" with a goto

6:40 PM
In real assembly you'd put the subroutines either before or after your code. Before requires one goto, and after requires none.

@RohanJhunjhunwala I accidentally read "a goto" as "goats"

user165474
What has Downgoat done to all of us o_O
5

@KritixiLithos I'm thining of adding a goat function in the standard library, what I've added to the standard library so far are trig functions and a cat function

@RohanJhunjhunwala Would goat rip up your entire computer?

@HyperNeutrino I think Downgoat would be strongly opposed to the idea of wrapping things in goats.

6:42 PM
Or would it just chop off the unnecessary bits?

@wizzwizz4 No, it would either display downgoats avatar, or print an ascii goat,

user165474
@MartinEnder I have a feeling that Downgoat might not like that idea either.

user165474
@RohanJhunjhunwala Or you could make a reference to the game "There is No Game"

user165474
Or maybe it would return the source code of wolframalpha.com/input/?i=goat

@HyperNeutrino I doubt they'd be very happy with somebody breaking into their servers to get the source code. Unless you mean the HTML delivered to the client?

6:45 PM
@HyperNeutrino I really, want something on par with python's import this
Perhaps, I make it display the xkcd import antigravity thing

user165474
@wizzwizz4 sorry, I meant HTML. -.- I have a feeling they wouldn't appreciate people breaking in to get Wolfram's source code :P

@RohanJhunjhunwala How about you allocate a block of memory, XOR all of the bytes together, then print it?
(Oh, wait. Java can't do that easily.)
You could print your bytecode.

It's kind of hard to emulate higher level behavior with lower level SILOS
Even though I have bitwise operators, emulating an array is painful

@RohanJhunjhunwala Do what processor creators do:
Add support for dereferencing pointers in assignment operations.

@wizzwizz4 they have just a little bit more experience (and time) then me
I also am trying to avoid just cheating and using all of the high level java features, and directly calling them through silos

6:50 PM
Addressing modes are an aspect of the instruction set architecture in most central processing unit (CPU) designs. The various addressing modes that are defined in a given instruction set architecture define how machine language instructions in that architecture identify the operand(s) of each instruction. An addressing mode specifies how to calculate the effective memory address of an operand by using information held in registers and/or constants contained within a machine instruction or elsewhere. In computer programming, addressing modes are primarily of interest to compiler writers and to those...

ah, cool

@LegionMammal978 why are we moving it?

??? where?

I wonder if there are any untouched pixels on the canvas

They are building a flask, it would cover our southern half.
@betseg, there were some where are logo now is. They have now also been replaced.

wat no it's out territory

7:42 PM
They have an army of people working on it. We don't. They agreed to help us move when they're finished working on their flask.

Oh ok

@PhiNotPi See the link on "as so."

I'm fine with sticking to the current color.
I think the darker shade is actually too dark.
