Q: select the sorting type Bubble sort or Insertion sort or Selection sort

ali ismailI need a program where the user input numbers and select the sorting type Bubble sort or Insertion sort or Selection sort and ask the user if he wants to reorder again?? in java plz help

@NewMainPosts Please make that go away.
But, that brought me a

5:09 PM
Challenge idea: sort an array with all of these sorts at the same time.
On each stage, the array-to-be-sorted is printed and moved to another sort. The order is chosen by the user.

Like each permutation run it through a different algorithm? That could be messy.
Ooh, that sounds a lot easier ^^

@zyabin101 Um...are you seriously trying to correct me on my English grammar?
It's an because I say "SE" as two individual letters, which means there's a vowel sound at the beginning, therefore 'an'.

I pronounce "SE" as a word.

I pronounce "xkcd" as a word.

Also, it has no vowel letter, so "a" for me.
@redstarcoder How?
"hkicd"?

5:13 PM
Very carefully

correctly

> While testing this program, I set my PDF printer as the default. It worked, but also sent a print job to my laser printer containing 87,792 pages of "Hello, World!" I pulled the paper tray and canceled the job, then retested. It did not happen again. Thanks, Windows 10.

interestingly

#blamewindows10

@redstarcoder [ksksɗ]?

5:13 PM
Yeah that sounds close enough ^

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ 87k pages? Stop wasting tress!

> @windows10
ftfy

The /d/ definitively needs to be implosive (close enough to a normal d)

@GabrielBenamy Oh, you have the Welsh edition of Windows?
7

5:16 PM
I've posted it here before, but it never fails to make me laugh

[1 5 3 2 4], order B, I, S:
[1 3 2 4 5]
[1 2 3 4 5] (insert sort will add 3 items per stage)

@GabrielBenamy yeah I realised after it was you who posted it :p

In this case select sort never gets its stage, and insert sort puts the first 3 items in order at its stage.

Oh wow the stars are raining for this one

that was just nonsense ETH made up

Bubble sort got one pass for its stage.

are there any known algorithms for arithmetic expression minimization. That is given a formula using + and * you return one using few operations.

@Lembik example?

5:23 PM
ax + bx = x(a+b)

@Lembik So, simplifying polynomials?

the left hand side has two mults and one addition. The right has one addition and one mult
@zyabin101 well.. maybe :)

or converting them to regular expressions

I mean it's going to be np-hard
not regular expressions!
this would be a form of code optimization I suppose

(by which I don't mean /(this|kind|of|regex)+.+/,

5:25 PM
I feel there used to be something called "superoptimizing" which did something similar

I mean mathematic expressions)

@zyabin101 oh ok..then yes
Superoptimization is the process of finding the optimal code sequence for one, loop-free sequence of instructions. It is performed in and by a type of computer software termed a compiler. While most standard compiler optimizations only improve code partly: real-world compilers generally cannot produce genuinely optimal code. A superoptimizer's goal is to find the optimal sequence. The term superoptimization was first coined by Alexia Massalin in her 1987 paper, Superoptimizer: a look at the smallest program. In 1992, the GNU Superoptimizer (GSO) was developed to integrate into the GNU Compiler...
but let's just stick to expressions with + and *
well... +,- and *

@GabrielBenamy Looks like memory corruption. Only ~1 bit per byte is corrupt, except the $...
Is that genuine?
Or a pirated copy?

@wizzwizz4 Or it's Welsh.

5:27 PM
@Doorknob I totally forgot the letter I submitted. Any chance you can post the results from the survey you collected?

@wizzwizz4 It was a video card issue

@quartata Ah.

I can't believe so many backticks got submitted

@wizzwizz4 I dunno if the copy was legal at all though.

Someone must have put some water in the GP, or even worse, the CP.

5:28 PM
> bip...bip...ting ting ting ting ting...bip...bip...ting ting ting ting ting
20/20 beautiful

@zyabin101 maybe we need a superoptimizer challenge

:D
I'm in.

cool!

I'll try not to make a 2k byte program!

@wizzwizz4 the $ is actually a corruption of a comma IIRC

5:37 PM
@PythonMaster It might be a challenge, so you'd be able to write a 2k byte program and still win.
Okay, so
there'll be polynomials with all variables definite (or no variables) as input (with fractions signifying the division operator) and regular math expressions as output.

Further explanation needed...

-.(._.).-
can't, ask @Lembik for more.

2
- + 5 - 2x
3

@zyabin101 Is that a real language?

5:42 PM
It's math language.
It's real.
Polynomials can have any degree, so be welcoming even to monomials:

Oh I see what it is now

  3
2x

Huh. I always thought it was complex and transcendental.

time to write some COW code
this is gonna be complicated...

@PythonMaster is this the arithmetic expression minimization?

5:57 PM
@GabrielBenamy Break a leg.

@zyabin101 dafuq?

I think there will be no division in the input
just +,- and *

@TuxCopter means "good luck"

@zyabin101 I admit to not wholly understanding brainfuck's published divmod algorithm, but only because I haven't looked into it myself.

^^

6:00 PM
@Lembik Well my first message was for the super optimization and the other was for what you mentioned in your ping

@TuxCopter redstarcoder is correct on the meaning. The idiom originally came from theater and performing plays. There was a superstition that if you wished someone 'good luck', something bad would happen to them. Hence, wishing someone to 'break a leg' would, of course, result in the performance going well.

@Dennis Your crypto posts are really detailed. I was looking for info on the Felix cipher and then proceeded to troll through your answers. c:

9 watchers, 0 bids, 20 min left. I don't know how to ebay ...

@mınxomaτ This is what happens when snipers appear. :P

6:15 PM
Let's hope so.

@Qwerp-Derp I am on now (sorry for seeing this too late)

@zyabin101 Why are you reposting all these links?

It started when flawr recommended me to remind of the TZ census at various times of the day.
I thought to add more.

@mınxomaτ I never understood eBay's bidding process. Why anyone would place a bid more than a minute before the auction ends is beyond me.

6:24 PM
@Dennis Probably so that wouldn't be enough time for anyone else to place a higher bid

I thought that's what automated bids are for.

Precisely

But as soon as there are two automated bids, they'll just increment the price for nothing.

eBay is weird... but how did eBay get in this chatroom in the first place?

They could also be gambling for the auction to expire and the automatic re-entry to kick in, where most sellers will probably lower the starting price.

6:34 PM
I've had to inform two separate people that today is tuesday

I've had to inform myself, on at least a dozen separate occasions, that today is not Monday.

@Pavel I've had to inform myself that today is not Sunday.

I didn't have to inform myself that today is not *day.
Yet.

School starts today for me

School starts in less than a week for me

6:41 PM
[redacted] starts tomorrow for me
Erm... I don't do suspicious things.

School starts tomorrow for me

School starts the 9th for me.

^ Isn't that also the last day of WB?

@KritixiLithos Winter Bash ends? :'-(

6:45 PM
I knew that this day would come, but... I couldn't bring myself to think... that it would actually happen.

@KritixiLithos All remove hats the 9th. ;(

It was a lot of fun though, I had no idea

Guess I'm stuck in 5th place

Not if I get 9 hats!

6:49 PM
4/10, could be longer :p

1/0 could be better defined

That's more than max!

@GabrielBenamy MooooOoMoO?

by the time you finish reading the explanation you've forgotten what the problem is and still have no idea how the solution works.

@Pavel, can you read ><> / *><>?

6:53 PM
@redstarcoder I can read Python!
So no.

@Pavel "The code first reads the integer into [0]. Each iteration of the main loop (lines 2 through 26) increments [1], then copies everything necessary over to the modulus algorithm, which spits out its result into [5]. If [5] contains any value, then [1] is the number we need to print. We print it, and then force-quit the program."

I can read Python too! I wanted Pavel to review one of my explanations from his perspective if he can.

@TuxCopter MoooomMoO?

Should I word that better?

I was kidding, I haven't actually read the explanation.

Q: Die Hard 3 Water Jugs Problem

dfernanIntroduction The well-known "Die Hard with a Vengeance" water jugs puzzle challenges the two heroes to get 4L of water in a 5L container, provided an unlimited supply of water and another container of 3L. This problem has a solution because 4 is less or equal than the largest container and is a ...

I wonder if the person who created COW was inspired by the Diablo II cow level

@wizzwizz4 The brute-force part refers to repeatedly refilling or emptying as necessary and transferring water from one container to another. — dfernan 1 min ago
Am I being really stupid, or is it actually unclear?

I think he's referring to a naive algorithm, not necessarily a brute-force algorithm

7:05 PM
@GabrielBenamy they were probably inspired by this awesome website

@GabrielBenamy slither.io
Like agario but much much better

@GabrielBenamy Old Flash game I enjoyed: Defend Your Castle. Kill stick figures by throwing them into the air!

oh my god

@DJMcMayhem That is more strategic than agar.io

i remember defend your castle from 12 years ago

@TuxCopter wtaf
wat is this
@GabrielBenamy hell yeah

@El'endiaStarman I played that on windows xp!

Crush the Castle 2: angry-birds style game but with trebuchets in a middle-age earth

i have a cache of old flash games somewhere
that i used to play in high school

@KritixiLithos I love that game

7:35 PM
Learn 2 Fly: great time waster if you want to waste 2-3 hours quickly

@TuxCopter are you sure
@DJMcMayhem that and learn 2 fly are the best

@DJMcMayhem I like the user-made castles

@GabrielBenamy shift: armorgames.com/play/751/shift

Shift 4 is better

7:36 PM
Best flash game series i've ever played
@KritixiLithos no, shift 3 was best

Oooh yes, Shift is great.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Do you know that there is Learn to Fly 3?

@El'endiaStarman looking for more games like shift was how I first found antichamber

7:37 PM
The whole Shift series is good, play them all

cool
I'll check it out later

@KritixiLithos I didn't find that one as fun as the first two.

@GabrielBenamy NGHBRHD

I found learn 2 fly the best of the three

@GabrielBenamy a dark room is also fun
a dusty path is epic

7:38 PM
@TuxCopter Tip for the game: you can change your score via editing the localStorage data

@DJMcMayhem I'm confused but addicted

Oh, anyone here that liked Hannah and the Pirate Caves (on Neopets)?

@KritixiLithos pls send teh codez

There are 0 bytes of code

7:39 PM
You get a fox at 50 points, by the way.

WHERE DOES THE FOX HIDE

At least, I think I remember it was a fox.

Huh, NGHBRHD was taken down.

Both games are sidescrollers where you have to destroy your enemy's base (it is slightly different in AoD3)
If you want a shorter game, go for Age of War 1 or 2 (3 sucks)
I think there is an online version of Defender of the Crown. It's a turn-based game where you have to capture the whole of England more or less
For TD, there is Bloons TD 5, another game where you can waste hours easily
Fancy Pants 1 & 2 are great. They are adventure games where you control a stick man

The earlier Bloons games are also fun.
Ahhh yes, Fancy Pants! In a similar vein, there's Wone too.

Talking about stick men, there is Choose Your Weapon, a shorter platform-based game where you have to fight off computer viruses

fancy pants was fine, my favorite was definitely bloons TD and learn 2 fly

7:53 PM
I like the Omega gear in Learn 2 Fly

Cool Math Games is pretty cool

They are so OP

it's fun to fly as high as possible, run out of fuel, and see if zeus saves you
and/or rob

And then crash into the ground at full speed
Also going in reverse is a fun challenge (for which you also get achievements)
Learn 2 fly is best played after you have played game 1 since it is a continued story (and the story is nice)
Spoiler: I like the part where the protagonist penguin defeats the dodo
The cut scenes are funny
And there's NetHack

@Dennis Would this be considered a full program? codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/105395/61613

@GabrielBenamy 500 cents for a page title

@obarakon It's a full program, yes. However, it seems like it violates the rule You are not allowed to use any builtin base conversion functions.

@Dennis Ah I missed that, thank you. I'll update it soon.

8:31 PM
@GabrielBenamy Hm. It was made to be "secure" but I can still do for(var i=0;i<20;i++)document.querySelector("button").click();. Sure, it isn't as fast as calling the native function, but it still works. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

> The most expensive upgrade costs over 1 million. If you haven't spent that much yet, you're not done.

oh you can actually call the native function
setInterval(increaseUnits, 1)
profit!
oh, it goes to Cheating
clever girl

No one's solved any of the time capsule problems except for 1 and 2, and 2 was solved by only one person.

They're so hard

Quite a few improper quines though

8:43 PM
@ConorO'Brien you can do that and just click the button instead of directly calling the function

@Poke yeah, true. Much laggier however. I'm trying to break the function

And you can change your score by editing the local storage data (once you've unlocked save)

Bunch of cheaters. :p

Well, earning points is slow

@KritixiLithos yes you can. nice find haha

8:48 PM
Once again, in case anyone missed it, new time capsule form.

Ah! Cracked it!
increaseUnits(100000, "Click")

@ConorO'Brien -1e666 for cheating

what, that's the purpose of the website

Ooo, Syntax Highlighting at 50,000

@TimmyD clicking intensifies

8:55 PM
javascript:setInterval(increaseUnits, 1);

17 mins ago, by Conor O'Brien
oh, it goes to Cheating

5 mins ago, by Conor O'Brien
Ah! Cracked it!

I unlocked Syntax Highlighting and now the Output thing is blank
;_;

8:57 PM
same

@TuxCopter What are you guys talking about

Could a mod please open the Japt chatroom?
