Hello @ortho o/

You're still up, as usual :D

Jan
Yeah, came back from a miniparty, decided to check SE before going to bed xD

Got your priorities right, I see
(No sarcasm intended)
I... just woke up and decided to check SE ;)

Jan
=D
Got your priorities equally right imho ^^

I was preparing spectra for the NMR appendix of my thesis earlier today. I came across a molecule whose 1H spectrum had a peak at 1.56 ppm that I couldn’t explain for quite some time.
Goes to show how long I wasn’t in the lab …

Hahaha
That's an irritating peak.

Jan
2:24 AM
Almost as irritating as 0.07 ppm, which always sneaked in =C
You got me damn curious about the lowest voted post. I wonder if I can use my 25 krep tool access to find it o.o

Jan
2:37 AM
Doesn’t seem like I can. But I can use my bed to catch some sleep o/

@penta Finally made Chem.SE use of one of my Herzberg's. :-)

A: What makes a radical 'free'?

hBy2PyTLDR; It depends who you are talking to (organic chemist, ESR spectroscopist, or physical chemist/chemical physicist), and when. The way I read the quote below the fold, there have been three major senses of the definition, at least to the best of the knowledge of a giant in the field like Herzb...

3:08 AM
@Jan No, you simply need to search "deleted:yes" and sort by votes.
Actually - as you know, you can see deleted posts with $10^{-5}~\mathrm{Grep}$; however, I'm not sure whether you can search for them. I have no way of testing it out, though. It wasn't that offensive, I just thought, no need to dig it up again.

user228700
Hi, everyone :-) I've a very very quick question. Is this possible in water:

user228700
$[Pt{(NH_3)}_2Cl_4] (NH_3)→ {[Pt{(NH_3)_2}Cl_4]}^{-2} + {{(NH_3)}_2}^{+2}$

There, that looks better.
And the existence of a salt with $\ce{NH2-}$ anions is questionable.

user228700
Sorry, that was an (NH_3) counter-ion, not NH_2.

user228700
Dyou think that is s'thing that would happen in water?

3:17 AM
If NH3 is a ligand it should go inside the square brackets, so I don't really know what your compound means.
Specifically the red bit: $\ce{[Pt(NH3)2Cl4]}\color{red}{\ce{(NH3)}}$
That's confusing me.

user228700
Sorry! :-/ I mean counter-ion.

But NH3 isn't charged.

user228700
Yeah :-/

So, your product side doesn't really make sense to me either.

user228700
Okay, I'm sorry, that was dumb.

user228700
3:19 AM
Thanks :-)

5:26 AM
@hBy2Py Of course I'm biased, I like #2 :)

Hello everyone. What are the search options that are available in Chem SE? I've googled search options, and I get this URL http://stackoverflow.com/help/searching
. However, some of the options do not seem to work here.

@QuantumAMERICCINO Carry out any search, then in the results page, click on "advanced search tips" to the right of the search bar.
I must note that "Loong" yields 23 results whereas "ortho" yields 252 results. I WIN

Gosh, I'm torn.

@orthocresol you watered down an answerer's answer quite skillfully
it was quite abrasive

"Quite abrasive" is an understatement ;D

With Orthocresol around and ready to edit your posts, it's better for them to be understatements. (0:

Honestly, I can sympathise with the original sentiment. OP's idea is really rather silly.

> Adjust the pH of the solution to (8.0±0.1) with concentration hydrochloric acid (by potentiometry).
Would this be understood as "control your adjustment process using a potentiometer"?
Maybe there's a better formulation.
Just "(potentiometry)"?

MetacresolOn the festival of Diwali, Indians exchange sweets and share their love. I did just that this very morning, but things don't always go the right way. Can we omit of before "bovine milk powder"?
In order to make the instruction shorter?

@CowperKettle That's fine, really.

@paracresol I will have to post a question on ELL to make sure.

I see that 'omission' a lot ;)

I also noticed, but I'm not sure 100%

11:48 AM
@CowperKettle Sure ._.
@Cowper Try this one :D

However, the intro sounds a little dull XD
I'm no music connoisseur ;P
How about this one?

Same goes for @Loong 3:)
@Cowper Orthodox?
( Guessing, since you're Russian ._. )

sorry, working
I have seen it, e.g. "introduce 10mg saline [solution]", so it is probably common usage in highly technical documents. For more general readers, I would use a preposition. — Mick 2 mins ago

Q: Omission of the preposition "of" in chemical procedure desciptions: "transfer 1.5 g bovine milk powder".. etc

CowperKettleFrom a procedures section in a document: Transfer 1.5 g bovine milk powder into a 200 ml volumetric beaker. Is it common practice to omit of in construction of the kind 1.5 g (of) bovine milk powder I have the impression that it is, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe there's some book descr...

> Mix the solution with a circular motion, avoiding foam formation. << This phrase is rare in Google. Maybe there's a better one?

@CowperKettle There you have it ^_^

@paracresol I haven't been baptized

@CowperKettle Google? O_o
@CowperKettle Atheist?

I'm looking for a naturally sounding phrase for "avoiding foam formation"
@paracresol yes

@CowperKettle "so as to avoid formation of foam"? ;P

12:13 PM
no
rare as hen's teeth and not good semantically

@orthocresol Is this the same person who kept posting each of his answers under a new account?

@paracresol Yeah, I'd consider that normal behaviour.

@CowperKettle That's pretty rare :D

@orthocresol Hell, I don't even know if @Jan's a guy to begin with. >.<

@CowperKettle If you're moving the container to mix: "Swirl the solution gently, to avoid agitation/foaming"
Or, if you're using a tool to mix it, "Stir the solution gently, to avoid agitation/foaming"

@hBy2Py thank you, but there is no word "gently" in the original. Hmm. Maybe it is good to add this word, since it is implied.

12:19 PM
@hBy2Py Oooh, alternative to the light sabre? ;D

@paracresol I name thee.... "GLOW BOW".

> Using a 10-mL syringe, aseptically transfer 5.5 mL of the IV solution stabilizer to the IV bag of NS. Gently mix to avoid foaming. (from Google Books)

@CowperKettle Depends on how much liberty you have to introduce changes.
I don't know offhand of a single word that includes both the senses of 'mix' and 'gently'/'carefully'
Good question for English Language, perhaps

@hBy2Py insinuate

@hBy2Py Either you have penchant for speaking archaic...or you have an LOTR fetish X'D

@CowperKettle I've never heard that word used in a the context of a laboratory practicum. It's modern usage is only in the sense of 'put forth a theory indirectly', usually with a connotation that the theory put forth considers a person, idea, thing, etc. negatively.

@paracresol Well, it's 'penchant' in my own mind. Others will reach whatever opinions they will.

@CowperKettle You could also consider placing the "(by potentiometry)" next to the given pH value "5.0 ± 0.1" since you are using potentiometry to measure the pH.

@Loong thank you! I thought that the whole (by potentiometry) thing was odd.
If it is not odd, I'll place it closer to the figures.
Another translator translates it as "(potentiometry)" at the very end of the sentence
I used to translate it as "(control using potentiometry").

Q: "Adjust pH of the solution to 5.0±0.1 with acetic acid (by potentiometry)". A question on terminology

CopperKettleIn a procedure description I'm translating, there's this sentence (I here quote it literally, word for word, as it is in Russian): Adjust the pH of the solution to 5.0±0.1 with acetic acid (by potentiometry). @paracresol and you are a Hinduist (sorry if I'm using the wrong term)?

Jan
It’s the wrong term, yeah xD
Hinduist implies fanaticism much like islamist. The term for normal believers is Hindu.

oops
So Atheist must imply fanaticism, and normal non-believers should be called Athu.

Nowadays you can just buy some Sildenafil, but if you're religious, you might pray too.

The Lingam (IAST: liṅgaṃ, also linga, ling, Shiva linga, Shiv ling, meaning sign, symbol or phallus) is an abstract or aniconic representation of the Hindu deity, Shiva, used for worship in temples, smaller shrines, or as self-manifested natural objects. In traditional Indian society, the linga is seen as a symbol of the energy and potential of Shiva himself. The lingam is often represented alongside the yoni (Sanskrit word, literally "origin" or "source" or "womb"), a symbol of the goddess or of Shakti, female creative energy. The union of linga and yoni represents the "indivisible two-in-oneness...

@paracresol Yeah. Fits those Austrians to destroy the year of chaos 2016. But Renzi lost. So maybe 2016 was concentrating all on Italy and had no resources left for Austria …?

According to adherents, Pastafarianism is a "real, legitimate religion, as much as any other".
