Sorry for the delay:
CCCC: Partition the road, trading tea with chosen outsiders (6)

2 hours later…
2:20 AM
@Alconja Sorry I couldn't confirm sooner; I was AFK. That is (of course) correct.

2 hours later…
3:52 AM
...just realised, that my cryptic arguably breaks a rule, so I'm going to edit to:
CCCC: Partition the road, trading high tea with chosen outsiders (6)
(which is somewhat of a hint, but an improvement, even if it may(?) still break conventions a little)

6 hours later…
10:15 AM
@Alconja hey got your email :D

user230888
Where is the community metapuzzle's pieces ?

11:31 AM
@Alconja I have the open excel, am I supposed to see changes or do I need to hit refresh? lol

12:20 PM
@Alenanno Heh. No, it was just my "pure logic" attempt. Just wanted to see if I was supposed to be able to get any further without taking guesses. Don't have time now to have an attempt with guessing, but will in the next 24hrs or so (assuming you still want me to, and haven't given up waiting).
That being said, it currently feels like there must be multiple solutions given how few spots are set, but as I said, I've not done this type of grid before, so we'll see what happens when I start guessing.

@Alconja Oh no worries. To complete the grid it won't take you long. Because as-is, yes, it feels like there are many solutions, but the truth is that the more you add the less there are, because even though you might fill 90% of the grid fine with random values, sooner or later something will conflict and you'll be forced to adopt the only solution (the one I have foreseen).

12:53 PM
@Alconja If you find a different solution than mine that works, I'll add another clue to force my solution.

Sid
Ahh, new puzzle in the making?

@Sid Me? Actually... 4/5 lol
Two are rather "simple", as in, logic grids with numbers.
I sent Alconja a copy to test.

Sid
The "simple" ones are usually the most satisfactory

@Sid As soon as Alconja gives feedback, and I'm happy, I'll post it.

Sid
Test? As in to solve it? If so, then he is not allowed to post the answer on the main site,right?

1:01 PM
@Sid Well, of course not. :P I think he's aware of that.
I helped Sconibulus as well once and didn't even post on the question.
It's just that I needed another pair of eyes to test it because mine were starting to become numbers themselves. :P

Sid
Yeah, it tends to be tough when you know the answer. The mind becomes biased...

@Sid Exactly! I'm fairly confident though because I tried to give the puzzle all the opposite values of the correct solution and in the end I always ended up with mine because of various conflicts.

Sid
Well, another pair of eyes won't hurt the puzzle and also takes away one possible guy who can answer. Thus, the chances of the question lasting more than a day increases. :P

@Sid Eheh I think it won't take long for it to be solved. It's not a big grid, that's why I'm preparing a bigger grid. :P

Sid
Yeah, bigger grids are harder to solve.

1:18 PM
@Sid It's 15x15. I know, I'm evil.

Sid
Hell.... 15x15 is like impossible.... (Might not be for experienced guys.. I am talking about myself)

15x15?

@Sid :D This time I'm prepared, I'll make sure to add proper ways to make it more easily solvable.
@dcfyj Hey there

15x15 what?
and hi

Sid
Isn't Helvetica not available in MS word 2007?

1:25 PM
Couldn't tell you

@dcfyj 15x15 logic grid

like einstein puzzle logic grid?

@dcfyj No the one called "suguru", google that. :P
With the numbers and regions.

Ok, so basically each region has numbers 1 through x and there can only be x repetitions of a given number in any given row or column?

user189275
[cc @Deusovi @Avigrail] As a reply to my mail, I got a mail from Avigrail today. You can guess the topics obviously.

1:33 PM
@dcfyj Yes for the first rule and no for the second... The row/column is not important, what matters are neighbors! No same number in any of the 8 neighbors of any given cell (diagonals included).
So for example:
1 4 3
5 2 1
4 3 5
No "2" is present in any of the 8 neighboring cells.

Ah ok, a 15x15 of that would be annoying, but I highly doubt impossible

The regions shapes may vary and numbers don't have to appear in order inside of a region. So you can have a horizontal region that appears like 3 5 1 4 2
Of course, clues are given.

Well, yeah. Would take forever otherwise (not to mention multiple solutions)

Gotta go for now, I'll see you guys later.
Yeah, clues are there to force single solutions, basically. :D

Sid
Any idea what fonts are best for writing a synopsis on a project?

1:36 PM
Times New Roman?

"what fonts are best" should always be answered by "comic sans"

@ArbitraryKangaroo His question now is completely different

Sid
@ArbitraryKangaroo That thing is over. I have done that already...
I am in a bit of a fix now....

@ArbitraryKangaroo stop removing everything...

Sid
@dcfyj Too generic.... Something better?

1:40 PM
Courier New? :P

Roboto

Sid
I was using "Monotype Corsiva"but I doubt if it is clear...

I haven't had to write a paper in a few years and I don't remember most fonts so I'm probably not a good source of knowledge

There are lots and lots and lots and lots of typefaces intended for setting substantial quantities of text. Pick any of them :-). What sort of tone are you wanting to convey?
Corsiva would, I think, be horrible to read in substantial quantities. Same goes for any cursive-looking font (e.g., anything with "Chancery" in its name).

Sid
A student's tone to a teacher? :P

1:43 PM
You want boring but maybe not too boring. Unless someone reading this is a typography fanatic it won't matter too much unless you pick something outstandingly terrible. You say it's a synopsis; what have you done typographically with the rest of the project?
Is it going to be printed out or read only on screen?

Sid
Printed out.
I have used "Lucida Calligraphy" for some of the other pages but I am sort of confused on what to use to design the "Cover Page"...

Now MBB is just trolling at this point. "Here's a trivializing hint", "It's very very trivial"

Sid
1:59 PM
That guy has a devious, devious mind. :P

This over-use of the word makes me think it's not AK...
@ArbitraryKangaroo trivial

user189275
Here's a random thing which I found funny here:

user189275

Sid
Ok, mods.. This is getting beyond the point of annoying. Is there no fine, no law that can punish a user for deleting his comments unnecessarily and in a large scale?

user189275
If anyone tells, I would more than happy to get into a 30 day self ban, it's a lose (if you don't ban)-win(if you ban) situation to me.

2:12 PM
How about you just stop doing it

Is it so hard to stay logged off? You would just create another account if that was the problem...

user189275
@dcfyj Yeah, good idea. I will then next code all my tbd messages in chat with an easy-to-code-hard-to-decode cipher.

...

user189275
@LukasRotter I don't find any point in creating unnecessary accounts. My only other account is tpk, and I made it to use it from mobile.

@ArbitraryKangaroo So why do you want to get banned?

2:15 PM
@ArbitraryKangaroo You do realize that this is the internet, right? Things posted in a chat room are public, if you don't want it seen, Don't post it

user189275
@LukasRotter Because I don't think any of the messages of mine here is useful. (Yeah, I have stopped putting up any puzzle answers online, so I do it secretly without posting)

@ArbitraryKangaroo I don't think your messages disappear when you're banned. But I don't know, maybe they do (would be bad for transcript, but whatever)

@ArbitraryKangaroo If you don't think your messages are useful then don't put them up in the first place, there's no point in putting them up and removing them, it just breaaks conversation and annoys everyone else
4

user189275
@dcfyj That's exactly the reason I delete it, and if you say that I should realize it before posting them, then the obvious true reply is that I am 10X (or more) slower than any normal people.

@ArbitraryKangaroo That's a cop out...

user189275
2:18 PM
@LukasRotter I am not saying my messages would disappear, I am just I wouldn't then clutter up the chat place more.

@ArbitraryKangaroo LOL. Is it really that hard to just not post here? :D

No, messages don't disappear, as far as I know.

user189275
@dcfyj That is true, but I do have around 5X more persistence than the average guy here, so the two balance and I am just at 1/2 X disadvantage.

@ArbitraryKangaroo There are other actions mods can take besides suspension. For example, muting you in chat.

user189275
@Alenanno Yeah, cool thing to do. (Why don't they do it now ?)

2:20 PM
Or kick you out of chat.

Sid
@ArbitraryKangaroo You are a KID!! Stop taking yourself too seriously. Just enjoy life for now... you won't get time in the future, I promise you....

@ArbitraryKangaroo Don't know about cool, but certainly necessary at times.

user189275
@Sid Who is telling I'm taking myself seriously ? I am relaxing of course ;)

Does it make sense to call moderators overlords? There are certainly some people higher up in the hierarchy, so I'm not sure.

user189275
Yeah, the John Ericson guy is there.

2:21 PM
@LukasRotter Well, we have the CM above us, and that's it.

I guess it's OK then.

@LukasRotter If I say overlords I'm usually referring to the site creators, not the mods.

@ArbitraryKangaroo I can do those things too since I'm a moderator here as well.

user189275
@Alenanno So what ?

@dcfyj How would you call moderators? (except moderators :P)

2:22 PM
@dcfyj I call them Powers-that-be :P ahah or CM more simply lol
@LukasRotter Evil biased dictators?

@Alenanno Good one.

Being a moderator isn't as cool as people think, you take a lot of s**t just for doing what you're supposed to do.

Thus the burden of being in charge

@Alenanno Which is pretty cool since you'll just ban them :P

@LukasRotter lol, that would be abuse of power

2:25 PM
@LukasRotter lol
@dcfyj Problem? Want to take some time to cool off? Eh? EH?
finger hovers on suspend button

@ArbitraryKangaroo Your current attitude seems to be "I'll keep deleting messages even if it annoys other people. And I don't care if you ban me or something, I don't care for anybody else." It's dangerously close to a direct violation of the "Be-nice" policy, so better take our advice.

user189275
Okay everyone, so I'm starting to code up my to be deleted messages.

Probably a good thing you clarified that

2:26 PM
@dcfyj Why? What does it say?

user189275
@Alenanno Find it out by yourself :P

As far as I'm concerned it's gibberish, I'm saying it's a good thing he clarified that the coding thing is a joke.
@ArbitraryKangaroo Although this applies here

Q: Unsolved Mysteries: Kryptos

GentlePurpleRain This is the second in a series of Unsolved Mysteries posts. These posts explore current unsolved real-world puzzles. Since these have been unsolved for years, it's uncertain whether anyone on on Puzzling.SE will be able to find a solution, but we do have a lot of brilliant minds here... ...

@ArbitraryKangaroo ok...?

user189275
2:30 PM
@dcfyj (The next one's aren't joke, they are actually coded) ?

Sid
@Ankoganit Do you honestly think he cares? This is becoming almost an everyday-thing and it has had no impact whatsoever. I can tell all here, I am losing my patience very fast now...

If you're actually coding your "deleted" messages then you're making a rather poor choice in my mind

user189275
(I will code all my messages in Vignere and/or playfair, but I don't think you will crack them easily...)

@Sid Hmm...

And there's that rather poor choice I was talking about...
@ArbitraryKangaroo Why do you even bother writing? If you don't want people to read it, don't write it... and you can't say that it's because you're "10x slower than most people". You're taking the time to write out the message, encode (once or twice) and then pasting it. There's a lot of forethought involved in that.

2:42 PM
This is just spam at this point.

stop it

@ArtOfCode Yo dude

\o

user189275
Seriously, I didn't remove my last two messages. Someone is doing that.

And out of nowhere, another mod!

2:42 PM
@ArbitraryKangaroo Yeah, me. Stop posting gibberish.

@dcfyj Someone flagged, that's why. :P

Ah

user189275
Five mods. Cool.

Flags do tend to have the effect of summoning mods :)

Flags = pokeballs?

2:43 PM
@ArtOfCode Indeed. I was already here though lol

@dcfyj kinda sorta

@dcfyj Flags = all of SE mods (all of them)
Wherever they are lol
It's like the bat-signal.

By the power of these flags, I sumon thee. MOD FORCE!

@dcfyj What is that?
Seems like a reference.

I feel like I almost get it, too

2:46 PM
I was sort of referencing captain planet
But I think it turned out more like something else, just not sure what...

@dcfyj Oh that. :D

3:04 PM
@ArtOfCode Hey, this is Puzzling - gibberish is on-topic!

On the site, sure
Not in chat where it's just annoying people

See Alconja's post on the starboard. If posting cryptic crossword clues in chat is OK, why not posting enciphered messages too?
OK, if it's annoying people, then sure, I guess. But flagging for that just seemed a bit harsh.

because it was annoying people

jinx :-)

If people are interested in solving them, then yeah sure, but if you've been asked to stop it several times already...
then I turn up :)

3:08 PM
What is the latest Chat Cryptic Crossword Clue, anyway?

@Randal'Thor Cryptic clues are fine on the main site, ciphers without anything except the ciphered message are off topic and downvoted on the main site, so why not here?

@Randal'Thor I think you missed part of the previous conversation. AK basically said they were going to post gibberish just to annoy people.

@Randal'Thor I think it's still Deusovi's

So much blue in this chat lol

@Alenanno Downvoted, not off-topic. And chat is often precisely for stuff that would be off-topic on main.

3:10 PM
11 hours ago, by Alconja
CCCC: Partition the road, trading high tea with chosen outsiders (6)

If I remember correctly it goes: Parents extracted western gas from seals (4)

@dcfyj Which? I just searched "CCCC" and the latest I found was this:
11 hours ago, by Alconja
CCCC: Partition the road, trading high tea with chosen outsiders (6)
@GentlePurpleRain Jinx again!

Deusovi's was solved?

I finally got Deusovi's
It was MO(nogra)MS

@Randal'Thor Fine, downvoted. But still, just ciphered text is not a puzzle, it's a "wildly guess how I encrypted this".

3:11 PM
... after a lot of hints.

@Alenanno That why I linked what (not) to do :P

Darn, cryptic crosswords have never been my strong point.
Bailey M used to be pretty hot at them.
But he's one of those users who simply disappeared one day.

user189275
@Randal'Thor (Almost) exactly one month ago, down to the hour !

@ArbitraryKangaroo Do you mean one year?
Bailey has been gone for a lot longer than a month.

@Randal'Thor His last post was on Aug 2, last seen on Oct 18
But he had a pretty long break between Oct 2015 to Aug 2016, yeah.

3:18 PM
@LukasRotter Oh wow, I didn't realise he was here as recently as 2 Aug.
Yeah, he pretty much vanished over a year ago.
Following in the footsteps of leoll2.
And CodeNewbie to some extent, although CN still posts occasionally.

user189275
A really annoying thing is that of A. Mirabeau's. I previously had waited long for the next Labryca's to come.

user189275
@HughMeyers: What's the tags for your puzzle for the metapuzzle ?

@ArbitraryKangaroo Ah well, real life gets in the way sometimes.
I haven't posted much for a few weeks either.

Hmm. Tags. I guess rhyme and steganography.

@Randal'Thor Or evil moderators participating in a conspiracy to silence high-rep users... I wonder when they'll go for you.

3:24 PM
@LukasRotter But rand IS a mod

@LukasRotter ROFL

I've hardly been on for a few weeks. Trying to make time here and there.

Not sure if you're aware just how ironic that is :-)
@Ankoganit Only on SFF, not here.

Not on Puzzling? But OK, I guess he's part of the conspiracy, too.
We're all doomed.

we're all conspiring against you

3:25 PM
@HughMeyers And I guess we should all use the tag?

I'm part of a plot to kill all paranoid people.
Ah, of course. Word as well.

Sid
My conspiracy theory is complete!!

@HughMeyers Plotting Lots Of Things ...

user189275
@HughMeyers +many for all your fantastic puzzles ! All of them are awesome. (The profile text of yours look suspicious ... any ? I tried for around 1 hour and gave up)

If you find anything, let me know. I wasn't trying to hide anything in there.

3:27 PM
@ArbitraryKangaroo You mean right?

I now have an answer on Lifehacks which is higher-voted than any of my answers on Puzzling :-(

user189275
@Ankoganit Oh . I just realized I read misspelled the word "steganography"from the beginning ... that's why I always wondered how typists (stenographers) are related to stenography.

@ArbitraryKangaroo Thanks for the kind words on the puzzles. I aim to please.

Sid
@HughMeyers Here's what I got- You live in a house which has walls,floors and ceilings. You also have a computer(Nothing too surprising) and You live at a place near a lake which should make the place a beautiful one and a peaceful one too...

Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). I live in the Lavaux region.
This is near my house: myswitzerland.com/en-ch/…

user189275
3:31 PM
@HughMeyers Just saying, youu may experiment with other tags like or .

Yes. I think I'm almost at the end of my steganography cycle.
I've been wanting to try something new for a while.

Sid
That sight though!! I would dream to be at a place like that away from this city mess...

It's grey and wet this time of year but very nice in the summer when the grapes are ripening.

user189275
Beautiful.

@HughMeyers ? :P

3:37 PM
I'd like to do a cipher if I could think of a good idea. Rotate this and vigenere that doesn't do anything for me. The method of enciphering should mean something.

Sounds like you've got some research to do :P

user189275
@HughMeyers What do you mean in the last sentence ?

A riddle/cipher would be cool. Something like the answer to the riddle is the key to the cipher.

@HughMeyers Pro tip: create a cipher by using some (possibly well-known) idea that isn't normally used for ciphers.

@Randal'Thor Like the sour pods?:)

3:40 PM
Like this or of course this.
@Ankoganit Yes, or that!
@HughMeyers I think that's been done a few times before.

Q: Multi-part challenge: riddles and cipher

rand al'thorThis is a multi-part challenge; you will need stamina to complete it! The style of this problem may remind you of some of my friend avigrail's riddles, and I will admit to having pinched a few ideas from him. Anyway, let's get down to business. The real answer is in the ciphertext at the very bo...

does this count?

@Randal'Thor Hence the need for a new, clever idea.

@Sconibulus Hard to tell until it's solved. But looks like it, yes.

I should throw another clue up there, but I don't know what a good clue would be...

Oh, I didn't realize that wasn't solved yet

user189275
3:45 PM
Why don't we create an Ebook merging up those exemplary questions ? (This might be later printed)(Excluding , of course)

That reminds me, Puzzling should have a blog like many other sites

@ArbitraryKangaroo Some of us have already had some of our puzzles appear in print ;-)

user189275
I mean creating an collection of all the exemplary questions.

user189275
@Randal'Thor Really ?

I mean, I've printed out probably 3-4 puzzles to work on them better

3:50 PM
@ArbitraryKangaroo Remember that Beechwood Review guy?

user189275
Printed puzzles ? I have around 25 pages of printed puzzles of puzzlers here, mostly of HM, some of GRP, some of Bailey M. But unfortunately I can't print out BMG or Alconja, because they need high quality color printing.

user189275
@Randal'Thor That links to a meta post, and I don't have 10k rep.

@ArbitraryKangaroo links? what link?

@ArbitraryKangaroo See, is it that hard to not delete your messages?

@Sid (shh you are reminding him :P)
Hmm, long time no CCCC
2

I believe this one is still holding:
52 mins ago, by Rand al'Thor
11 hours ago, by Alconja
CCCC: Partition the road, trading high tea with chosen outsiders (6)

4:06 PM
I think I've got an idea, just can't find the right synonyms.

Hmm, so what I thought was only "outsiders" could be a definition unless @Alconja is being super tricky. The only six-letter word I can think of ALIENS. They partitioning road could be taking the AL from ALLEY, but then I am stuck :(

"Partition" could be a definition too.

Yeah, that's one possibility
But what the heck is "high tea"?
Could "high" be an anagram indicator btw?

It could be, but I doubt it.
I think "high tea" just refers to the letter T.

Don't forget that "high" was added as an amendment to the original clue.

4:13 PM
Yeah, and that's why I think that.

I suspect "high tea" may mean the first of more than one T.
Start with STREET (road), split it up (partition), and swap (trade) the first T (high tea) with something else.

Hm, I was thinking start with a synonym for road, then swap a T for CN ("chosen" outsiders) to make a word for "partition".

Yeah, that's probably a better way to use the "partition" bit.
Since I don't see how splitting the actual word is going to be useful.
Unless we do something like STREET -> EETSTR ...

Yeah, maybe? I'm not quite sure. My interpretation may be wrong.

CNRACK?
ROUCNE?

4:17 PM
A word finder doesn't find anything for *T*-->*CN* other than ATE-->ACNE.

Maybe @Ankoganit is right and there's an anagram somewhere.

I don't see what could be cluing the anagram, though.

user189275
SWITCH/DIVIDER/ALIENS/DRINKS :P

Hm?

what if "the road" means "main st" or similar?

4:34 PM
what if "partition the road" is all def for STRIPE

I've never heard "stripe" as a verb meaning 'partition the road".

Stripes up the middle of the road?

putting lane markings on a road, which partitions it into lanes, is called striping

Huh, I didn't realize that was what it was called.
"Chosen" seems weird to me. I'm not sure how to interpret it.

I know! It's SCREEN - T's replaced by CN in STREET

4:46 PM
Oh!
You replace both!
Yeah, that's definitely it - your turn now! :D

Brilliant!

That was nice
CCCC: That man is the leader of robbery (5)
I can't make too hard ones

Its HEIST

not getting it

That was shortlived

4:49 PM
HE+IS+T_.

I think. He - That man - is the begging of the robbery

robbery is the definition

Ah, gotcha.

That man-He is-IS The Leader-T Robbery-HEIST

4:49 PM
If it was 3 letters, I would've said Rob :-P

Yeah that one
@Randal'Thor :P

OK @Beastly, your turn!

@Ankoganit am I right?

I liked that clue! It's pretty simple, but the surface reading is very smooth.

@Ankoganit Btw, on closer inspection your profile picture is AWESOME.

4:50 PM
Okay will try and think one up

In thumbnail version it just looks like a drawing of a cell or a flower or something, but in detail it's amazing!

Yeah, ambigrams are cool!

Reminds me of

@Deusovi My favourite ambigram:

nice. i thought ambigrams are usually designs that are the same upside down
but that one is pretty durn cool, and oh so apropos

4:54 PM

Usually they make another word upside down (or the same one). Sometimes it's mirror symmetry, and sometimes it's just two readings of the same direction.

Ugh, the I is really ugly there

I don't really like that one. It just looke like "ADLEAVDE".

@ArtOfCode That's the weirdest I I've ever seen.

Oh, crap, I forgot to fix that puzzle, I hope I still have the components at home

4:55 PM
