Dog
4:00 PM
@djsmiley2k Failing to fail to do stuff what?
@JourneymanGeek You're just jealous

Windows, it never stops failing

Dog
Smart people just cuss instead of complaining about people cussing more than them cause they're smarter.
Also isn't it like 4am or something Bob?
Also I think I just broke my phone
@djsmiley2k Windows worked pretty well for me until W10 came around

Bob
@Dog 3am, why?

Dog
W8.1... never bluescreened on this laptop
@Bob No idea
Oh shit
shit shit shit shit shit shit shit
FUCK YOU SAMSUNG GO DIE IN A FIRE
3
My phone just factory reset itself for no reason whatsoever :-/

4:05 PM
o_O

Dog
Just when I'd gotten around not losing my pictures to broken SD cards all the time MY PHONE ERASES THEM FROM INTERNAL MEMORY INSTEAD
2
AAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH
Maybe I should just get used to not having any data

@Dog You have backups, right?

Relevant canonical: superuser.com/q/241817/380318

Dog
FUUUUCCKKKK

@Dog language

Dog
4:11 PM
FFFFIIIIICCCCKKKKEEENNNNNN

@BenN Does that work for phone internal memory?

Dog
Goddamnt
I want to kill Samsung
And Microsoft

Oh, whoops, I thought Dog was talking about an SD card :/

Dog
And Google
And Citrix

Probably not then :(

Dog
4:12 PM
I hate technology so much right now

Bob
@Dog was it during upgrade/flash?

Dog
EVERYTHING is broken

kill em all.

Dog
@Bob Update, yeah

Bob
@Dog oh. that might have happened to me before...

Dog
4:13 PM
@Bob New to me :-*

Bob
think I complained about it in here
then you told me it shouldn't happen :P

Dog
And these new phones with forced encryption mean you can't use a custom recovery to back it up first

Bob
sorry, I must've infected you

Dog
lol
That's like a whole months' worth of data
I'm going to have to repeat this entire month
Everything I've done in life. Everywhere I've been. Every person I met. Every photo I've taken. Every drive test I've recorded. Every speedtest I've screenshotted. Every data usage exceeded chart I've uploaded to imgur

Bob
O_O

Dog
4:15 PM
And all I wanted to do was fix my flakey wifi

Bob
brb enabling onedrive sync...

night fellas

Bye!

Dog
cry

don't do anything I'll regret

4:15 PM
g'night

Dog
I should have enabled owncloud sync first dammit

Bob
@Dog :(

Dog
DAMMIT
I was |<->| THIS close to backing up all that data
THIS CLOSE. To having proper backups of my phone for the first time.
BLARGH
Oh well it's not as if I haven't lost twice as much data three times before. Bleurx

I don't really know anything about Android internals, but Things On The Internet suggest you might be able to mount a normal file system from your phone with ADB. Might that work with normal recovery tools?

Dog
@BenN Erf, I doubt it. Looks like it's erased the encryption key

Bob
4:17 PM
@Dog I went with sdcard for data and TiB
then my card failed

Dog

Bob
managed to recover (read-only, repeated reads)

Dog
@Bob Yeah, my SD card is currently broken and awaiting replacement too

Bob
...I should back up my new card pronto

The update wiped my data.

Dog
Time to find some pickles
@Bob >_<
Yeah, I remember that. For some reason it didn't wipe mine last time.

Bob

Dang

Dog
Lulling me into a false sense of security evidently

Bob
Apr 2 at 14:22, by Bob
@kerbalspacebecky I think I could've kept my data by not flashing HOME_CSC, but updating is weird anyway. Was an encryption error.
:(
now you have me too scared to do another update

Dog
That said, did you use an all-in-one update file (Just click AP in Odin) or one that had separate parts (AP/CP/CSC)
I didn't flash HOME_CSC actually, I ignored that file

Bob
4:20 PM
@Dog separate, off sammobile

Dog
@Bob I think that must be it

Bob
it was actually a broken Odin build at the time

Dog
I'm guessing ff it's just an AP with everything in the one file, it won't erase

Bob
@Dog apparently flashing CSC does a wipe, HOME_CSC keeps

Dog
@Bob Oh

Bob
4:21 PM
but the Odin build at the time would freeze up on flashing HOME_CSC

Dog
OH FFS
I WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT 15 MINUTES AGO

Bob
then they fixed it at some point

Dog
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Bob
@Dog :(
there was a warning about flashing CSC on sammobile forums way back then

Dog
I wish I was Bob, so much smarter than me :-(

Bob
4:22 PM
and on the download page I think
@Dog considering I effed up the exact same thing... probably not :P

Dog
:-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(
@Bob Yeah but you'd have known not to do it again today

Bob
@Dog actually, I was just gonna avoid updates till the phone died
lol

Dog
I wonder if Android uses encryption keys tied to the passcode or just uses the passcode to encrypt the master key

Bob
@Dog the latter, afaik

Dog
Probably the latter, since you set a passcode after it's encrypted. Shit
@Bob I... was gonna avoid updates till I actually needed something, but I figured my wifi was basically broken so I might as well
But didn't want to reset. ARGH
If it'd given me a warning at least I'd have copied all that shit off

Bob
4:24 PM
:<

Dog
It's easier to copy even 20GB than to do all the stuff that originally generated all that data again
@Bob Yes, that's how I'm going to feel for the next few LIFETIMES
I HATE DATA.

Bob
wtf, sammobile doesn't have the non-carrier AU ROMs anymore
wtf

Dog
@Bob Wouldn't that just be a vanilla international ROM?

Bob
@Dog nup. XSA is non-carrier Australia
I'd have to flash CSC to change

Dog

Bob
4:27 PM
> 2. If you want to keep your existing set up, but want to install firmware with Odin, then use

BL - Bootloader
AP

HOME_CSC

(NOTE: before using this file you have to remove the meta-data directory, and then repack the firmware otherwise your install will stop.

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
they added that note after I broke mine :S
> 3. If you want to install another country firmware, or wipe your phone, then use

BL
AP

CSC

CAUTION: This CSC contains a PIT file that will wipe your existing data and return your phone to 'out of the box' or will install another country/network firmware
gee thanks sammobile, hide this definitely not important info in your forums -_-
it needs a great big warning in the download

Dog
On the plus side, running that image of my old desktop I uploaded in a VM worked, so now I have access to my old Chrome settings, extensions, and userscripts again
I'm not entirely sure spending 14 hours to get a few lines of javascript makes up for my phone DELETING FUCKING EVERYTHING
@Bob Yeah
Shit. I guess that's what landed me in this situation then
Argh I so need to punch something right now
Oh and typical, my Google sync on my phone hasn't synced for 8 days, not that that would have mattered
I was trying to figure out just yesterday how to sync my mobile drive test logs to Google Drive

Bob
o.o

Dog
Oh yeah, also my GPS logs that prove I was only doing 31 in the 30 limit when I got caught by that speed camera... they're gone too
If only I was Bob and knew about those forum posts an hour ag o
Why the heck is there even a CSC vs HOME_CSC in the file anyway.
It's like, just a few bytes difference. A FEW BYTES. AND NOW GIGABITES ARE GONE

Bob
4:32 PM
I completely forgot until this happened -_-

Dog
If I don't find something to punch soon I swear I'm going to go out, find a fox, and cuddle it to death

Bob
:$
have you considered a punching bag?

Dog
@Bob See you totally should have been my guinea pig
@Bob How the heck am I going to fit one of those in a suitcase while homeless
2 days ago, by Dog
@Bob do you want to be a guinea pig and install that new S7 firmware?
Waah
Well at least I'm not going to make that mistake again. Also, backups.

Bob
but ima fox not a guinea pig

Dog
How many times do I need to accidentally destroy my data before I set up proper backups

4:38 PM
@Dog I think I remember when swearing and saying bad words and being angry at everything, it caused more things to happen that made me angry. I think you should do some meditating, relax, and take on a new perspective on the world where you aren't so angry. Start out with breathing exercises, then close your eyes, then think about something bliss like love or sunshine or that picnic when you were 8, then meditate for about an hour slowly letting go all those things that anger you
so you can wake up blessed and refreshed

Dog
/me punches @CausingUnderflowsEverywhere in the face with a giant underflowing fish
Oh I know what'll fix this
Alcohol and drugs.

Oh no that won't that will mess you up even more

Bob
@Dog pls no =(

please try meditation and a nice warm bath
just meditate in the warm bubble bath then. make sure if you fall asleep that drowning is not possible though

@Dog Google Photos ftw ?

Dog
4:43 PM
Oh and my weight logs are gone too so I need to make myself fat and lose weight again so I can take screenshots of the measurements as I go

nope google made him furious, he should use duckduckgo instead.
https://ddg.gg/

Dog
@HackToHell I'm actaully less concerned about the photos than my mobile drive test logs

ah, it's bloody annoying when ANYTHING in the phone gets deleted

Dog
By "Less concerned" I mean pissed-off-ness of 8/10 vs. 9/10

Just realised that if I formatted my phone, I'll not be able to login to AWS,gitlab, Azure, Gmail or any other place.
>.<
I don't even know where the damn backup codes are

Dog
4:52 PM
@HackToHell Lol yeah
I double facepalmed when after my phone wiped itself and asked me to login to my Google account, it demanded I get a 2fa code from the Google Authenticator app that had just been wiped from that phone

5:03 PM
this current generation is screwed

@HackToHell use authy

@arda ooh nice, with sync

@HackToHell yeah, I use authy because of that
I lost access to some of my accounts in the past when I wiped my phone, and made the switch to authy. Best choice ever.

raise de levels higher than high
I quit

Only two more days until the beginning of the end, when the world falls apart

@Dog yes

The Truth About Google

Dog

Still pissed

5:54 PM
I've been on record saying this before, but I'm favoring Clinton, even if she's not that trustworthy. It's that I'm just not confident that Trump can do anything genuinely helpful to this country that I'm voting for Clinton instead. I honestly don't want to vote at all, though, but I still want my voice heard.

Dog
All the more frustrating now because of @Bob
If it weren't for Bob I wouldn't have known so soon it was totally preventable :-P

Bob
:(

Dog
Then I'd have continued to blame Samsung, instead of myself
@Bob Heh, I'm joking

6:46 PM
oh you don't have backups?
lul. now it got funny.
I think Trump started this because h wanted a challenge
now he looks like failing majorly, he doesn't want the whole thing anymore.
I don't think he wanted the presidency ever, the same way Boris Johnson never really wanted to leave the EU

Delta-based upgrades should mean less time downloading.
Also, less processing on the device, too.

7:26 PM
is there a ms certified way of getting all the patches upto a point, for a 'brand new' device which you want to get patched offline?

I think applying ZDPs with DISM is what you want to do

nah, literal fractory installs
i cant spell, but we get shipped a preimaged laptop by a supplier which we then update and attach to a domain
so i just want 'every update' for say windows 7.
wsus i guess is one way, but ideally i just need them on a portable hdd or somethiong

Are you looking for a downloadable package that includes all the updates? The ZDPs there are that, I think. Here's some for Win7: blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2016/05/17/…
You can use MDT to apply the updates and join the domain with no touch

ah yes
can we still install it manually like any other update?

Yep, it's a normal MSU

7:37 PM
sweetabix
right now they have laptops getting updates for 3-4 days!!
now to remember ZDP til tomorrow morning lol
IS THERE A WAY I CAN ROLL up the patches since april 2016?

Not sure, but here are five that cover it: support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22801/…

7:55 PM
Do i need each months, or just the latest one?

I think you need all five :/

k that's cool, ty
i had seen those roll ups before, but not found the large one

Dog
8:43 PM
It happened
Oh yeah, Chrome sync fucked up my tabs too

Dog

> The SX9300 is the world’s first dual channel capacitive Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) controller that accurately discriminates between an inanimate object and human body proximity.
The resulting detection is used in portable electronic devices to reduce and control radio-frequency (RF) emission power in the presence of a human body, enabling significant performance advantages for manufacturers of electronic devices with EMF radiation sources to meet stringent emission regulations' criteria and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) standards.
Oue ogwn qgwwsa one od rhose
I appear to have discovered VoLTE

2 hours later…
Bob
10:47 PM
@Dog Maybe I should update...
But I really cbf setting up all my crap again :\

Dog
@Bob Eh, just don't click the wrong button like I did
I have to say Android's built-in app restore feature is a looooot better now, to the point it's actually useful
It'll let you select which device to restore from, not necessarily the same one, as well as picking specific apps to restore or skip. And it restores some app data but still nowhere near all
Also if you have a custom launcher (e.g. nova launcher) it'll restore the launcher and set it as default before you finish the setup wizard (which takes a lot longer now for that reason) so you just go seamlessly into your custom launcher at the end of setup and don't even have to change from the Samsung one manually

Bob
11:07 PM
@Dog I'll still be using TiB probably
Problem is I can't restore system apps cause that tends to break things

Dog
@Bob How so? Which apps exactly?
Ive never really had a problem that I can remember

Bob
@Dog Last time I updated I just did a full restore. Which caused crash on boot

@djsmiley2k wsus offline update sounds like what you need

Bob
Some TouchWiz thing IIRC was the culprit

Dog
@Bob :-o

Bob
11:11 PM
I just re-flashed and restored only user apps

Dog
Eww why would oyu want to restore Touchwiz

Bob
@Dog I just did a full backup => full restore
was too lazy to pick out apps
that bit me in the arse

Q: How can I declare independence from the United States and start my own micro nation?

Gabriel Connor NelsonHow can I take back my sovereignty from the American government and start my own micro nation? I've read about starting a foreign company with my name in all caps but I want a lawyer's answer.

oh. wow. they've infected SE...

Can a stackexchange declare independence from SE Inc?

Dog
@Bob Ah
I rarely restore system apps tbh
Only time I really do is usually to move/backport a system app from one phone to another rather than backup/restore

11:15 PM
@arda MathOverflow can!

Bob
random capitalisation taken a step too far

Dog
I guess next time I'll just go through the complete pain of decrypting the device, backup to external drive, then re-encrypt it just to avoid any further accidental erases

Bob
> He appears to believe that by capitalizing "United States," he is referring to a different entity than the federal government. For better or for worse, it’s the same country.

Dog
That or an online nandroid

Bob
@Dog I thought rooting it decrypted it, but idk

Dog
11:17 PM
@Bob Nope

@Bob tbh I can understand their mindset

Dog
We've had that discussion before :-P

Like, who wouldn't want to get rid of debt magically? Well, it doesn't happen, but people try anyways.

Bob
@Dog probably, yea
@arda somewhere hovering between "delusional" and "batshit"?

@Bob yes

Dog
11:20 PM

Bob
@arda Most people would probably notice when their attempt has failed. Or probably find out before they get that far. These people just dig deeper...

Dog
There's a nice progress bar now instead of just an endless notification spam of "Installing application(s)" and the restore also survives reboots

@Bob did you read the court documents on one of the answers?

Dog
And there seems to be some sort of "Most used app first" propritisation too.
Basically everything they should have had when they implemented the feature five years ago, to make it at all useful

Bob
@arda Not this particular one, no.
Any interesting tidbits?
@Dog Huh. Is that recently now? I think I still got the old one.

11:22 PM
Read it. It's amazing/

Bob
@arda You talking about the new law.se question?
I was still going through it :P
There wouldn't be taxes. — Gabriel Connor Nelson 10 hours ago
of course

Bob
Because governments run on magic faerie dust and unicorns.

Dog
@Bob Well, it is the first time I've ever used it on this phone, similarly first time I've ever used it on Android 6+

Bob
s/recently now/recently new/
> This person fared particularly poorly because his argument relied in part on the UCC, which is a United States model code, but he was arguing in a Canadian court.
LOL

11:26 PM
Oh also if you find time also read yourstrawman.com - it's amusing as hell.

Dog
Surprisingly enough accidentally wiping my phone and having to restore it from Google cause I have no backup isn't a particularly frequent occurence

Bob
Rebellions are legal if, and only if, they succeed. The Continental Congress won, so it ended up independent. The Confederacy lost the Civil War, so it ended up not independent. Given the difference in military power between the US and the OP, I predict the OP will not gain independence. — Patricia Shanahan 20 hours ago
lol, that last sentence
@arda assuming that's SFW?

@Bob Yes.

Bob
@arda oh god. I've seen far too many sites like that.
@Dog took a look at a couple of them the other day, too :P

@Bob ouch
worst part is that people believe this stuff

Bob
11:36 PM
good ol' hand-written HTML

@Bob and 90's clipart

Bob
how 2 list
also, there's no closing tag for <font>
this is the kind of HTML that makes browser developers weep

Dog
@Bob Lol
You should see my html...
I haven't even bothered with <html> tags or <head> for that matter
Just went straight to <body> and the only reason I even bothered with <body> was so I could put a black background around the <div> that was originally the entire document

Bob
> There are many, many ways to provide electrical power where no fuel is burnt, and where you do not have to pay for whatever energy you happen to draw from the system. There is no need for you to do any of this, but it is important that you understand that it can be done, and there is actually no need whatsoever for you to be charged for every watt of electrical energy which you choose to use.
my face hurts
> We are told that no electronics-driven transformer can output more than is used to drive it. Thane Heins has demonstrated that this is just not true, while by adding a permanent magnet to the transformer, Lawrence Tseung has shown that with just a simple iron frame, much more power can be drawn from the output than is needed to operate the frame.
oh my god
they're full-blown perpetual-energy nuts too

Dog
There, I uploaded it especially for you so you can see it, and judge, and weep

11:40 PM
@Dog you crashed my firefox

Bob
> Ordinary, unmodified "petrol" generators can provide kilowatts of electrical power by splitting water into it's component gasses and then using those to power the generator
wat

Dog
@arda You must have picked the wrong option

@Bob I told you this one was good
@Dog 3g and zoom 9 or smt

Bob
> The reality is that energy can be pulled from the air, using an aerial
wat. WAT.

Dog
(Zoom 10 is the only thing thats remotely likely to "crash" anything and it doesn't crash, just takes about 40-60 seconds to render)
@Bob What?

Bob
11:41 PM
I mean. Yes. But it's not like this comes out of nowhere...

Dog
It's true!

Bob
@Dog Sorry, I cut the quote short.
> , and Hermann Plauson produced systems which provided more than 100 kilowatts of electrical energy and which needed no input whatsoever.

Dog
After all mobile phone reception is just pulling energy from the air, using an aerial. Granted, it's picowatts to femtowatts, but still
Oh
lol

Bob
...I bet these people are also complaining about mobile tower radiation too

Dog
@Bob Breaking the laws of physics ftw

Bob
11:42 PM
@Dog That's... not quote terribad
hey you know what <select> does

@Bob MOBILE TOWERS HAVE RADIATION THAT CONTROLS US. IT HANDCUFF OUR BRAINS, BUT WE KNOW THE TRUTH

Dog
@Bob What does random blocks of hand written commented out code remind you of? :-P

Bob
@Dog It's actually really easy to speed up if you want.
FYI, modifying innerHTML requires reparsing the entire el. That's very inefficient.
var img = document.createElement('img');
img.src = blah
oDiv.appendChild(img);
oDiv.appendChild(document.createElement('br'));
@Dog ^ use that instead of the innerHTML stuff

Dog
@Bob Yeah, noticed that after I added the last two zoom layers that append a few hundred elements
@Bob See! Told you it was bad HTML. I remembered there was the DOM appendchild thing but I was too lazy to learn how to use it :-P

Bob
function drawMap(oDiv, layer, zoom, ver) {
    switch (layer) {
        case "1":
            layer = "voice";
            break;
        case "2":
            layer = "data";
            break;
        case "3":
            layer = "datacombined";
            break;
        case "4":
            layer = "lte";
            break;

    }

    switch (zoom) {

        case "4":
            xFrom = 7
            xTo = 8
            yFrom = 4
            yTo = 5
            break;
        case "5":
@Dog ^ your new code :P
thing doesn't seem to work anyway
oh it was zoomed too far lol

Dog
11:54 PM
Lol
Yeah I already updated the page :-P
I was like, too lazy, but since you'd basically already written it for me >_>
Now even zoom 10 only takes like 5 seconds to initialize rather than nearly a minute

Bob
@Dog there's probably more optimisations, but I cbf

Dog
@Bob Lol
It's basically a kludgy tool that shouldn't exist
But hey, you've already made it a ton faster. And it only needs to be run once a month
Oh and I added a body onLoad to it, which I'm pretty sure is a very archaic and deprecated way of running a script on laod
The only reason it's there is so you could see my kludgy code
Did I even close the </body> tag? I can't remember
Oh hey, Chrome automatically adds an implicit <html> and <head> wrapper in the rendered DOM
