@Bob gtg. Mumble?

12:18 PM
I cleaned laptop's keyboard yesterday.... Underneath!
What I found below...
Damn...

Was it a theme park?

An Ant colony?
A Wasp nest?

The Amber Room?

Elvis?

The suspense!

12:23 PM
4 hours of removing key by key with respective socket, using scotch tape, dust air blower.
I like tinkering with electronics, tech, computers and laptops but of all jobs this has to be the worst. The theme park ride in ant colony and wasp nest was the worst part of it.
I should be paid for such rides and compensated for its affects on my health!
DELL never mentioned I was supposed to work in hermetic lab suit!
Got 25 points in radiation and poison and I have no Rad X and antidotes.
But objective was completed and experienced gained.

Historic Yahoo breach from late 2014 discovered—conside‌r changing passwords if you haven't done so recently

(please pin)
Uh, wrong message...

If its worth pinning someone will ;)

@Bob cool, want me to add you?

2:36 PM
People are panicking over this, saying "change passwords now!" when the breach happened two years ago. Hence, it's not an emergency; if you haven't changed it since, you should strongly consider doing so soon, but it isn't something to panic about.

@bwDraco amusingly, I'm not worried since my yahoo username is different, and I've not used the account in... maybe a decade?
and I erm
Don't remember what password I'd have used back then
actually... longer than that
daymn
@allquicatic if your current unlimited thing gets degrandfathered... boingboing.net/2016/09/22/i-have-found-a-secret-tunnel-t.html seems neat

He could considering suing Verizon for failure to deliver FiOS service as promised.

"sueing"
annnd, they could outspend you.

A settlement would help a lot.

"Hey, this seems cool, you should take a look and see if this floats your goat"
"He should sue his isp"

2:50 PM
I also think allq has access to seven-figures money and is able to get some of the very best counsel.

"whaaaaaaaaaat?"
Actually I'm pretty sure he's a middle class working stiff whose only vice is nice hardware
I can totally relate ;p

...and this goes to show I am still not qualified to be a mod or even a room owner.
Despite better behavior lately, I still tend to overreact, even if in more subtle ways.

(lol. Was talking to a co-worker of how someone had remade model F keyboards, but how they were rediculously pricy)
and he was like 0_0
"But pretty happy with my normal clicky mechanical. I might hand it down to my nephew when he's old enough ;p

I have MX Brown in mine.
Then again, paid $170 for a flagship product...

lol
That's a new jag. Nice, better than average, and classy.
The model F's an oldschool rolls, made from scratch by some maniac in a shed by hand ;p
(mine's an old lexus with dings all over maybe? I donno.)

2:54 PM
...which I pre-ordered no less, at your advice

I donno @allquicatic does the car anologies
My advice? ;p

Jan 24 at 6:28, by Journeyman Geek
@bwDraco do it. doooooo it ;p

ahh ;p

It's not a decision I regret, but kinda wish I could find a better use for the per-key RGB.

I was meaning mechnicals in general
all my chroma gear's either blue or off.

2:56 PM
It's a very powerful feature, but I have yet to find a truly useful application for it.

(actually my system's all blue backlit, other than the case fans)
toying with audio upgrades if I get a longer contract/alternate job

It also takes lots of work to configure.

My keyboard's an oldschool razer blue. (which matches my head-amp, mouse bungeee...)
mouse and headphones are chroma. Headphone chroma is limited and pretty useless

#C000FF is what I have
The underlying concept is a sinister, demonic purple color.

I don't have an underlying concept ;p
blue leds are cool.
But then again. what do dogs know about colour ;p

3:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek that does look very tempting, but my specific area is fairly marginal on Sprint last time I tried them a few years ago... maybe they've expanded though. Can only hope

Galaxy Note 7 recalled due to burn hazard? I am paranoid about all the smartphones and tablets I have. Should I put them on the floor when leaving home?

@Boris_yo Power down your Note7 now!

@Boris_yo That's like saying "Someone in my country got murdered? I am paranoid about all the people around me. Should I lock myself in a bulletproof safe?"

then there may be a stepping and breakng and falling hazard.
Basically its one specific flagship phone with an issue
if you must be paranoid tho...
I donno.

3:28 PM
and the issue appears to be closely related to bad chargers

Most folks have turned in the faulty devices.

PSA: don't buy cheap-ass phone chargers and charging cables; it's not worth the risk

Don't batteries go on fire?

not usually no

Sep 14 at 17:06, by bwDraco
> Based on our investigation, we learned that there was an issue with the battery cell. An overheating of the battery cell occurred when the anode-to-cathode came into contact which is a very rare manufacturing process error. We are working with multiple suppliers to ensure that a rigorous inspection process is conducted to ensure the quality of our replacement units and we do not anticipate any further battery issues.
Manufacturing error.

3:29 PM
Batteries catching fire is rarely an intended design feature

Basically some sort of internal short ("anode-to-cathode came into contact") causing batteries to overheat and go into thermal runaway.
> The Galaxy Note7 has a charging cutoff protection circuit which works when it reaches a certain temperature. In the reported incidents, it has been observed that an internal short circuit (ISC) occurred in a battery cell. Since this internal short circuit caused the overheating inside the battery, the protection circuit outside the battery could not prevent these incidents although it did cut off the charging or discharging externally.

How do you respond to acquaintances asking you to come and install their new tech? Do you offer help, knowing that if anything happens to it, manufacturer will point fingers agt you and in acquaintances' eyes you will be liable?
Do you do it for free? Or you chargem knowing that it will be worth the stress?

@Boris_yo I have a simple policy
My time is not free, and my clients pay me what they think its worth
However, if its less than what I think its worth...

@JourneymanGeek What payment methods are in your policy?

cash
paypal's ok sometimes

@JourneymanGeek Less than it's worth? Example job?

I donno
At least transport + an hourly rate
the advantage tho is I usually get paid more than what I expect
the point is really that your time isn't free

Connecting HDTV. Would you do it for free, knowing that if anything, you can be blamed? Lightning strikes right at the time you plug in, you tilt too much HDTV and it falls, your static discharge damages HDTV etc.

3:50 PM
then no
But I wouldn't do it at all if I was that worried

@JourneymanGeek Good point. I could not say no when was young and stupid and was used.

you can always say no

"We love you!" they said...

If you love someone, you are surely to value their time let alone not use them as a rug.
Hypocrites and they don't even know it.

If its my home, sure

If it's relatives?

3:52 PM
Even then at some points I just ignore things

Mom, pop, bro, sis - 1st tier
Relatives - 2nd tier
But once they start telling others how good you are? That's plain impudent and abusive.
After honoring your relatives' requests for a while would you tell them suddenly your time is not free?

Have to plant and grow some balls then if it's first time...
Someone will feel uncomfortable...

"Hey, I don't have as much free time as I used to have, and I really can't afford to do it for free any more. As someone who's (what), I think I'd like to leave it up to you to decide what my time is worth."

Tablets desperately need faster charging. Wouldn't it be great if Android tablets had support for at least 12V/3A USB Power Delivery?
Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 is not enough, it still only delivers 18W.
Tablets often have 20+ Wh batteries, compared to about 8-12 Wh for phones.
Case in point: Google Pixel C battery is specified to have 34.2 Wh energy capacity.
Nexus 9 battery has 25.5 Wh capacity.

Who knows? I am neither psychic or a mind reader and I don't like guessing. You don't tell us what your operating system is, or anything about your network setup, type of internet connection, whether you are wired or wireless, make and model of any modems or routers ... @bwDraco I was trying not to be grumpy in my comment :)

6:51 PM
I am so not ready for a full transition to USB Type-C :(
So much new equipment needed. New chargers, new power banks, new cables :(
I'm just using a USB A-to-C cable to maintain compatibility with existing gear.
I'd have to spend at least $80-100 in name-brand (e.g. Anker) charging gear to fully equip myself for USB-C.
At least I have transitional gear on hand, including the aforementioned A-to-C cable (with a spare on hand) and a male C-to-female A adapter.
So, your thoughts on the USB Type-C transition? Even major charging equipment manufacturers like Anker have had trouble complying with the standards.

7:54 PM
I'm already transitioned fully to Lightning and not really caring about USB-C lol
I just buy MFi certified accessories and bam
I don't think I own any USB-C devices or any cables using it

8:42 PM
@djsmiley2k Why?

@djsmiley2k What are you referring to? In any case it's looking borderline offensive ...

Q: How can I find out what the hijackers are doing/have done while in control of my router?

GendarmeRecently, security cameras with livestreaming got installed around the house. The person who came to install the cameras changed a lot of the router settings (I thi...

@PowershellforLinux Not too sure why that got flagged. I see no obvious reason to flag it.

@tereško I've already told you I didn't flag it.

@PowershellforLinux: Your username changes are becoming very hard to keep track of. I strongly encourage you to stick with one username for as long as possible instead of constantly changing it. I had to check your profile to determine that you are in fact Catty.

or was that discarded to be more newbie-friendly

Q: Name changing rate limit can be circumvented in chat by changing parent site

Ben NWe in the Root Access chat room just noticed (ahem) that the rate limit on display name changes can be circumvented by changing the parent site. That is, a user can change names extremely quickly by doing something like this: Associate a new site account Modify the new per-site profile to have ...

@tereško You can have as many names as the number of sites where you are registered ...

I'm particularly concerned that several of these username (and avatar) changes, including the most recent one, are to names that bear no relation whatsoever to any of the user's previous identities.

@DavidPostill I would have loved to sit in on a meeting where that was decided .... with a handy brick

Obviously, Catty wants attention, but someone needs to tell him to stop, and I can't because I'm ignored.
Except, perhaps, by proxy...

@bwDraco I believe I'm ignored as well. So they won't see any warnings issued by either of us ...

what is Catty?

I'm running out of choices. Obviously, Catty won't want to ignore the bot because he relies on it (e.g. for silly things like !!/caat), and he'll realize that this behavior is not going to get him anywhere.

I was speaking through the chatbot (something I do not take lightly as it's tantamount to sockpuppeteering) in an attempt to force him between Scylla and Charybdis, so to speak, and he reacts defiantly by changing his username once more.

Guess some people have nothing better to do than pandering to some hypocritical, lying, drama queen all day...

Mods: The user in question is @kerbalspacecat (the username was changed for the fourth time in 15 minutes).

I'm seeing a couple flags from this room.
Anything I can do to help?
