HANDCUFF time!
Lock up @jrg first...
he's emotinally unstable...
just kidding :)

@JorgeCastro there is a question that's really important for this discussion, actually. let me find that
13
Q: How do I increase the font size in Dash?

Shauna WhiteI am a person with a visual impairment. Pre-Unity versions of Ubuntu allowed you to change all font sizes. Now the Universal Access feature is pretty much useless, as increasing font size to "Large" increases everything but the Application list in the Unity Dash, which is fixed at a size I cannot...

being able to easily configure the font size is sort of essential

Is it actually possible now?

We need more customization possible in the Appearance Window.
Even in windoze 7 you can customize the taskbar color
Me is dissapointed with Ubuntu UNLEASHED 2012

@jokerdino not really, no. you can change the font size in MyUnity but it doesn't work everywhere. on the dash, it just works for the main menu (and my Ask Ubuntu Lens, weirdly), but nothing else
works fine for the rest of gnome
it also cuts of the text, in the same way the icons are cut off, for the main menu

hmm
MyUnity for president!

2:05 PM
Weird.
I am guessing accessibility needs are on the list.

@StefanoPalazzo yeah that sucks (that's a bug)

ah, now I've messed up my font sizes :)

@StefanoPalazzo Do you have some time for a private chat?

yeah sure - you can click on my name and select "start a new room with this user"

cricket cricket
i hate it when the chat room goes silent. that means that people are getting actual work done.

jrg
2:18 PM
WORK?! WHO NEEDS REAL WORK.

<--
Because I also need real money'n stuff like that. :D

@jrg your just saying that cause you still have someone that puts food in your table!

I know jrg. You know nothing about real work

jrg
it was a joke....

I've got a weird bug.
any app I start gets maximised

jrg
2:25 PM
@William me, emotionally stable?!

oh hey stefano
there are some small (I promise, small) changes to the lens api for 12.04

@jrg (it was meant on a joking tone also)

@JorgeCastro that's cool, I assumed it would change a bit

jrg
@jokerdino as Octavian said, its your job to watch the moderators. Very closely.

@jrg I was kidding (or was I)
too bad you can't tell peoples intonation on the internet
that'd be a neat feature to include in unity 5.0
you can tell whether or not people are kidding]

jrg
2:27 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Thanks, I appreciate the vote of flag confidence. :D

Heh ofcourse I monitor your moves.
3

@jokerdino: the new stalker.
lol

Who is going to nominate himself other than James?

@StefanoPalazzo It's tough looking at a page with 40+ flags :)

Me!?

2:29 PM
Who's james?
@him?

jrg is James.

jrg
@MarcoCeppi @StefanoPalazzo I still cringe a little every time I realize that OH CRAP, i've gone through all my flags again...

oh

james rubies and github is his name

What is the appropriate way to deal with "Can I do X" questions? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2371/what-is-the-appropriate-way-to-deal-with-can-i-do-x-questions

2:30 PM
@jrg Don't worry we cringe too :)

jrg
Hehe.
Now I know the cringing is mutual, I'm just going to let you guys do all the cringing for me. ;)

@jrg A good chunk of your flags refered to questions that were already closed. in that case we just click a button that says "helpful", takes about 1 second.

jrg
Ah I see.

and there's a big red box that says "post closed", so they're easy to spot. in other words, don't worry about flagging too much ;)

user image
5
Yay!

2:32 PM
:D

Go flags!

and @jrg I dont flag questions anymore. Since now that I got the close votes.

I feel like finding something to flag just for comic effect...

jrg
Well, i'm not willing to risk any of my votes going to waste just because not enough people with votes saw them. :P

@MarcoCeppi Oh yea!?

2:33 PM
@StefanoPalazzo it's not nearly as much as last time
still they did promise us they wouldn't change it and then did anyway. :)

@StefanoPalazzo also apparently they got case conductor in enough of a shape to get it working
iirc ballons was looking for ya

Go trolling!

@OctavianDamiean Yeah, but SO has way many more 10k users and mods than AU :)

How does one nominate oneself?
@MarcoCeppi Yeah, but wer'e better then SO.

2:35 PM
Mhmm, yea, that is true. :D

@William Well duh!

Go us!

I feel like me getting 3k was the tipping point. Jrg went into a rage.

@William Yes.

@JorgeCastro excellent. I have a text file somewhere that contains everything you need to do to install it, but when I finished, it was a bit broken. I'll try to catch balloons and the maintainer again next time, they were very helpful :)

jrg
2:36 PM
Trust me @jokerdino, i've had this in my head for weeks

not the maintainer, actually. but helpful anyway

it's excellent that mozilla is making all these great tools

Yes.

jrg
just didn't have time to do anything until now.

Go thunderbird!
How does one nomeinate oneself?

jrg
2:37 PM
Not to mention now that we have more people with votes.

I didn't actually bother to find out what caseconductor does ;)

it collects UI test cases
right now we use wiki pages
like "click on evolution, click mail, send mail, does it work?"
it's basically horrible

@jrg well yeah. +1 from me. :D

huh, I use google docs for that. sounds nice

theoretically with CC we should have those in there, and connected to jenkins and all this awesomeness.

2:39 PM
Google docs presentation editor needs some transitions.

jrg
@jokerdino :)

Sliderocket is better for online presentation

jrg
blasted autocomplete.

Q: Remote desktop not showing windows

paulmorrissI'm using Ubuntu 10.04. When I enable Remote Desktop and connect via TightVNC I can't see any windows on the VNC screen. I just see what looks like a default desktop, not the customized desktop on the console. If I click the mouse on the VNC window then it does the action on the console, it's ju...

Where can you buy a rasberry pie?

jrg
2:40 PM
@BrunoPereira 10.04 doesn't have unity in any way, shape or form

@jrg Don't worry about reputation.

At the bakery obviously!

in Android on Stack Overflow Chat, Dec 30 '11 at 21:22, by Octavian Damiean
However there are two types of reputation. The number and the real reputation.

wait. can you buy them now?!

Hey, that rimes!

2:40 PM
@jrg he says 11.04...

You definitely have a lot of real reputation.

@StefanoPalazzo think not, not yet

jrg
@OctavianDamiean um... was I worrying about reputation on my own? In that context, I was asking about the ability to vote to close.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

Im stuck at 1361 rep.

@BrunoPereira it sounded too good to be true. They told people they'll be selling them at the end of 2011, or early january. I'm convinced they won't cost 25$ either ;)

2:42 PM
@jrg sent you a write up about the cleanup sprint :P

jrg
@BrunoPereira although that post talks about a fedora thing.

@jrg my bad
@StefanoPalazzo me 2 ^^

jrg
@jokerdino looking looking looking looking not finding not finding not finding

@jrg Oh, misunderstood you then.

Im on page 6 of all!

2:43 PM
anyone remember the first Asus EEE? that was supposed to cost 99$ (:

@jrg email?

@StefanoPalazzo I remember paying about 400€ for it, yes. :D

jrg
@jokerdino checking checking checking
AH HA. FOUND IT. ;)

2:44 PM
I still have it and it runs Ubuntu 11.10. :D

jrg
Oh my. @jokerdino rocks. As in, really rocks.

Not really :p
I wrote them in a hurry... :/

jrg
um... you wrote an entire Q&A section that I struggled with for at least an hour. You rock. :P

I followed Oli's style :p

Im inteb=nding on getting a transformer prime.

2:47 PM
So, ...is it ok?

jrg
Yeah its great

Can I install Ubuntu on it?
Quad core touchscreen ubuntu... drooling at the thought
bv
bye

bye william

Hello , I made a live Ubuntu CD as some of you suggested, now what should I do to access my data in Ubuntu?
And after that, should I reinstall Ubuntu?

So, you already have Ubuntu installed?

3:03 PM
Yes but I cannot log in.
When I enter password it brings me back to log in page.

This one sounds familiar.
Ignoring that, you can boot using the live cd and access the data in your Ubuntu installation..

I see, how can I access the data on Ubuntu with that?

your Ubuntu installation is on a separate partition or a Wubi install?

No, it's not on a separate partition

no to which question?

3:09 PM
lol...

@rlemon No. don't do that.
Don't expose the cover.

whaaa?

these questions are always so hard to figure out...

Q: After update 11.10 video playback screen black, audio only

DuaneUpdated 11.10 last night. 59 files intalled. Now video playback is black screen in video player and Banshee. I was using the web during download. Could this affect the integrity of the updates?

WUbi installation it is then?

The link is somehow related but should I run the commands in the answer from guest account?

3:10 PM
@BrunoPereira Can we close it as a lack of info thingie.
@Gigili can you login into your guest account?

Actually I don't know what "WUBI installation" is ..

I mean it doesn't boot you into the login screen?

@jokerdino I can, yes

Right, that is great.

@jokerdino and that would help the user how?

3:12 PM
@BrunoPereira that was a bit of a joke.. :/
Wubi is a means to install Ubuntu inside of Windows. Hard to explain. Take a look at this one-- help.ubuntu.com/community/Wubi
@BrunoPereira I think I remember there was a x update sometime earlier. Ask him to reinstall the proprietory drivers..

No, it was a fresh install and on a separate partition as I said

jrg
@jokerdino @BrunoPereira the X update was for 12.04 iirc.

7 mins ago, by Gigili
No, it's not on a separate partition
Confusing.. :/
Who was dealing with Gigili earlier? Please do help her along!
I don't exactly know what was the course of action that was determined.

jrg
@Gigili do you see a lot of things like that on your computer? (on the livecd)

wait, is she actually on the livecd?

jrg
3:18 PM
I think she is

ok you carry on. i won't intercept :p

@jrg I know what a partition is, I misunderstood @jokerdino's question.

jrg
@Gigili understood. so, you are currently on the LiveCD, correct?

Now I'm on windows, it has one partition (c:/) and both Linux and Windows are installed on it.

jrg
ah.

3:22 PM
The issue mentioned in this question is quite similar to mine but I'm asking if I can run the commands from guest account, because everything I did it says "access denied"

jrg
In the guest account, you should be able to do something along the lines of su $your username and then it will log you in as your user
(in the terminal)

su $your username?

jrg
Heres an example of how i'd do it.
Scratch that.

?

jrg
I'm trying to make sure I do this right.
before I walk you through it

3:28 PM
@GeorgeEdison oh hey, you still going to charm up jetftp?

Aha, thank you.

jrg
Ok, I don't have a Wubi around right now, but based off of what I know, if you follow this, you should be able to get your data. wiki.ubuntu.com/…
so, install ext2read.sf.net

i am going off for the night. see ya in the morning...

cya @jokerdino

@jokerdino Thank you for your incomplete help.
@jrg I cannot follow the link, for which part of the issue should I install that?

jrg
3:44 PM
Let me make sure I have this straight. You installed Ubuntu and Windows on the same partition, and you need to access your Ubuntu files, right?

Right

jrg
If you go to here, and then search for "How can I access the Wubi files from Windows?", it will give you a few links to some different software

you should mention it's an encrypted home directory

I installed one (ext2explore), I think there was a problem accessing them that way.

@StefanoPalazzo oh?

3:48 PM
Anyway, I'll try that. thank you for your time @jrg.

jrg
Well, i'm not done yet.
because we still haven't recovered your files.
let me reboot and i'll try accessing my encrypted home directory.

@RolandTaylor yeah. it's got that standard encryption think you can check in the installer
so ext2explore wouldn't work

@jrg ^

jrg
i saw. :S

Gonna have to find another way in.
I know it is possible to copy a wubi disk to an actual partition, but having not tried it myself (and I don't use encrypted home directories) - no clue how to work around that one.

jrg
3:50 PM
I'm trying to remember how the home dir encryption works (on a really low level)

I told @Gigili to go to a tty and zip up the home directory, but hitting ctrl+alt+f1 doesn't bring up a terminal on the login screen

jrg
proprietary drivers?

you should be able to unlock it by just logging in to a terminal. that's what I figured anyway

@jrg that shouldn't stop a tty, I've used both ATI and NVidia prop. drivers with no issue that way.
Unless ofc Wubi has some catch to it.

jrg
@RolandTaylor well, i've had no luck using broken ATI prop drivers.

3:53 PM
Im outspoken! Yay!

jrg
and i think part of the thing is that its broken (right stefano? I don't remember the details from earlier)

@RolandTaylor wubi does not play a role with drivers

@BrunoPereira a role?

as in "creates no issues"

Hello all

3:57 PM
@AmithKK hi

Someone here told me to make a live Ubuntu CD and ... ( I don't remember the rest of it =\ )

@BrunoPereira Hey

@jrg what is broken?

@Gigili that is a problem

@StefanoPalazzo Ati drivers

3:59 PM
I've no idea :)

Thanks guys
Their NOT broken
(afaik)

@MarcoCeppi Yay! Congrats to you all

nice!

If we keep up the hard work we can hit 80+ in no time

4:01 PM
@MarcoCeppi Lets do that

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo I think you said something about having broken drivers or something that prevents Gigili from logging into her account and retrieving her data.
but I could be imagining things, its been known to happen. :)
YES.
SWEET. 75%!
my crazy plan is starting to pretend to work. ;D

Q: Install flash player 11 onto ubuntu 10.04?

liamwliI haved looked at loads of questions, and none have solved this. I want to install flash 11 (min 10) on ubuntu 10.04. Please can someone guide?

easy close fellas

@jrg well I'm not sure about any broken drivers. they wouldn't mess with the TTY though, I suppose

@StefanoPalazzo They do

hey @RolandTaylor
got close votes?

jrg
4:05 PM
Trust me Stefano, they do mess with a TTY.

@JorgeCastro Why the plan to remove CCSM? (Sorry No offence ment)

jrg
:P
@AmithKK YU LIKE SHOTTING USERS IN DA FOOT?

would it not be a better idea to be posting close questions in to the regulator's room? main chat moves very fast and has many many possible subjects (@JorgeCastro)

I usually post the easy ones here
and tbh it sucks to switch rooms in this UI
hey wait a minute ...

jrg
4:06 PM
I just have both rooms as pinned tabs.

@jrg ^ win

/me opens a new window on his spare monitor
OMG.

@JorgeCastro By the time I end up typing this line your message is gone on my screen!

jrg
I think @JorgeCastro needs to live on a netbook for a few months
would teach him proper window management. ;)

back
sorry I was on G+

4:09 PM
I panged you in the regulator room instead
@jrg I can't live without my expanse of monitors

jrg
@JorgeCastro I feel you man.
Now that I have a 20" monitor and a 15" laptop, I don't think I could go back to a netbook. :P

triple is the one that gets you
there's no going back after that

i'm having more git issues.
rdl@rdl-ubuntu-work:/var/www$ git checkout 2.0-development
Already on '2.0-development'
rdl@rdl-ubuntu-work:/var/www$ git add -f *
rdl@rdl-ubuntu-work:/var/www$ git commit -am 'there is a problem here'
# On branch 2.0-development
nothing to commit (working directory clean)
rdl@rdl-ubuntu-work:/var/www$ git push
Everything up-to-date
rdl@rdl-ubuntu-work:/var/www$
however, none of my changes have made it to the online repo.

jrg
There is something wrong about what I'm doing.

git push == git push -u origin 2.0-development

jrg
4:13 PM
I've got a good dozen+ ask ubuntu tabs open on windows, i'm trying to mount my ubuntu partition, and... yeah. :P

@jrg Broke something

jrg
@AmithKK nope
trying to fix something for someone

@jrg Oh, your friend?
cool

jrg
nope

vote up ppl, keep voting, if its useful, vote up!

jrg
4:27 PM
that is what 864GB of RAM looks like

BBT

@jrg haha my work isn't nearly as high-end.

jrg
@rlemon I still want that much RAM
it'd be faster than a freakin' SSD.
because i could like, mount / on there or something

this is 25 gig :P

jrg
see?

4:38 PM
long upload. - but yea - 50*512meg (minus what i've already used from the top right)

jrg
imagine a $12KUSD SSD. :P

you wanna see my 1.47 TB collection of drives (72 IDE drives from 1gb to 80gb)
lol, i'd have to find the box of them... but i know it's around.

jrg
@Gigili @StefanoPalazzo ok, i'm unable to get my encrypted home directory to "work" over here.
so i'll try and think up a backdoor this weekend.
because i'm pretty sure there is a way.

im off, later

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo heres an idea: copy the wubi img files to a USB stick, mount them on a normal Ubuntu, and then just use something like this blog.dustinkirkland.com/2011/02/…
wrong link. this is what you want - blog.dustinkirkland.com/2011/04/…
@StefanoPalazzo i don't have time to test it, but that solution should work. in theory at least

5:01 PM
Why do you need that much RAM for gods sake?
Do you plan so install Ubuntu and everything else in your RAM and never power off the computer?

jrg
@OctavianDamiean its 37 signals caching server

Crap, I see. I'll have to pull off my plan to build my beowulf cluster to keep up with you in the show offs. :D

Y U POST REAL QUESTION ON META

5:20 PM
@jrg Thank you jrg, I'll check if it works.
@StefanoPalazzo OTR problem again, I'd guess.

@jrg eh, that might just work

@OctavianDamiean yo, is that CMS thing still a pain to install? The charm one?

You mean PyroCMS?

yeah

I wish I would have never brought it up in the first place. The problem is that I hate PHP and I don't really have the time to write a CLI installer for it.
It would need something similar to Drupal.

5:34 PM
if it sucks then do something else
there's no reason to suffer in PHP bro

I'd rather cuddle with scorpions than writing a PHP installer.

let's see
I have diaspora, which is ruby?

Same applies to Perl by the way.

and ejabberd
which is erland. :p

Never touched ruby.

5:36 PM
but, it's packaged, so really just need to apt-get it, and then expose the config options, etc.

Mhmm, ejabberd. A jabber server?

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo Let me know if it works.

how about, if it works, I'll ask a question :) (and give you time to prepare an answer)

jrg
sure.

5:43 PM
I've found a way to write self documentation questions on SE. Write the actual question in the SE ask a question box, add a hr at the end of the question. Now write the answer in the question, format it and everything. When you are done, cut out the answer and post the question. Now paste the answer and post it.
God, I'm so smart. /sarcasm

@OctavianDamiean yeah it's jabber. There's another one called firesomething, but it's like, a bunch of java

Java?
I hate Java as well but I happen to know a lot about Java being an Android developer. :D
ejabberd sounds interesting though. Shouldn't be that complicated to get it done I guess.

anything that's in the archive already is easy
even I wrote one. :)
easy way to get an ubuntu mug!

hehe
Oh right, the documentation got updated isn't it?

5:51 PM
I'll have a look.

I've got Clarke's syndrome. I mark flags made by "Community" as "not helpful" - in the hope that it'll magically improve the algorithm, or cause it to raise fewer flags.
when all it does is change a row in a database nobody ever looks at

lol
At least you try!

Mhmm, a Raspberry Pi beowulf cluster.
