Q: C++ making HTTP request

LinuxOwnerI will be making a C++ app which will need to contact a website. I do not know how to do this. I have installed Code::Blocks as an IDE. It is my understanding that I will also need to install something along the lines of Boost or cURLpp. Before I start attempting to install one, I would like som...

Dream outcome: 80% for 12.04. Then we draw in enough new users to drop down to 60%.

I am pretty sure we won't drop all the way to 60%..
Or at least that is what I hope.

Eh, I don't know. It's like an RPG. Level up, move to a new zone. Get whupped and start grinding again.

Hi guys!

Hi!

Hey, this question came up...the tags are awful, but I can't find anything better. Have any ideas?
1
Q: Does Ubuntu have any comic/anime/manga/series about it

Luis AlvaradoAs some communities have their own Comic, Manga, Anime, TV Series, does Ubuntu have one related to it, to the developers, the Ubuntu scenario or something related to it.

meta post!
community might be a better tag though. remove 11.10, fun and add community,.

Looking at the description for "community" though, it doesn't seem like it would fit. I thought of that one, but thought I'd ask.

i can't disagree.

Oh, I've updated my 12.04 install to use the new HUD ppa, if anyone's interested in hearing how that went

And I feel like a nut case... Should have read all of the comments...

I got HUD installed here already!
Should I just delete the answer and save myself the embarrassment?
I will be back after lunch.

I guess you could...but InstantFox should be mentioned as part of the accepted answer, not kept in a comment.
I'll probably leave now anyway, since I need to get packed for when my dad picks me up for the weekend

Hello all

Hi
i need little help anyone there?

what's the matter?

can I install kubuntu 4.8 in ubuntu without installing the full apps pack (kubuntu-desktop)?

afaik, you can't

ooh.. and why? kde-standard is outdated?

10:36 AM
on second thought, i guess you are right.
i am going off. meet you later.

@jaimehrubiks sudo apt-get install kubuntu-low-fat-settings

oh thanks
but it would be kde 4.8 if i had updated respositories or previous version?

@jaimehrubiks No

Guys, any ideas why indicator-loader can't display an indicator?
/usr/lib/libindicator/indicator-loader /usr/lib/indicators/6/libdatetime.so -> empty GTK window

12:30 PM
BBL

@VadimRutkovsky 1. kill the compiz session: (metacity --replace &), 2. you need indicator-loader3 ←!, 3. start the indicator like this: UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= /usr/lib/libindicator/indicator-loader3 /usr/lib/indicators3/6/libdatetime.so
meh, or let's start this way: what version of ubuntu are you using?
and, the UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= part is not needed - i just had this in mind from testing the appmenu indicator.
okay, you also don't need to kill the compiz session for it :D
forget everything i said

em, that is 10.10 =)
gtk3 indicators don't work either
however, they are correctly picked up on session startup

weird, they do in 12.04 dev. :-/

but only default ones, not the one i've put into this folder
really weird - not error message - and no image :(

can't help you there - maybe visit the #ubuntu-unity IRC channel, but it's kinda dead during the weekend.

hi. is it possible to upgrade ubuntu from 10.10 t o 11.04 via shell alone. (without even starting the gui interface).

i am guessing do-release-upgrade lets you do that.

the things is I have the alternate iso...but what to execute the upgrade via logging into shell...?
* I want to execute the upgrade... 4give typo

if you have internet connection, you can use the command i mentioned above.
but, i don't have any experience using alternate ISO. so, you might want to hang around until someone with more knowledge comes here.

did you have any experience wherein your upgrade process ended abruptly and then you couldn't log-back in...?

hmm no. i didn't have such problems.

hello :)

I have an Intel graphics chip by the way. :)

o/ @StefanoPalazzo

do any of you know git? I've got a bit of a problem here :)

5:34 PM
I'm trying to create a repository on a remote server
so I ran this
git init
git push git@code.microsoft.com:microsoft/kv.git

How was it called? A bare repository, is it that what you want?

yes, just an empty repo that I can push to later
I can now run this: git checkout git@code.microsoft.com:microsof/kv.git
but when I run "git push", it says "No refs in common and none specified; doing nothing."
~/microsoft/kv $ git pull
Your configuration specifies to merge with the ref 'master'
from the remote, but no such ref was fetched.
I also ran some other stuff, mainly based on hope and expectations
this can't be good either:
~/microsoft/kv $ git log
fatal: bad default revision 'HEAD'
any ideas? :\

I probably did everything wrong, so I could just create it again, properly this time
in which case I'd have to delete this one first. don't want to clutter microsoft's servers :)

Mm .. m.m.mmmicrosoft!!?

5:46 PM
let's say microsoft :) (I'm not 100% sure this url is meant to be known)

I'm not sure what surprises me more, that you touch Microsoft stuff or that they use git.

it's not really microsoft ;)

I can now push to the repo by doing "git push origin master", and pull with "git pull origin master".
but something is still not right, I can pull all the others by just running "git pull"
(such a noob) (:
never mind, I just needed to clone it

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied: required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(1600, 1668), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1600, 1600)
Why can't I arrange my monitors how I want them?
Even on windoze I could have 2 monitors one on left one on right at full resolution...
and yes i tried unity 2d

I have no problem using two monitors. :)

Well, I do!

What graphics card do you have?

AMD

You may have to define a modeline first

7:26 PM
Mhmm, should work then.

Whats a modline?

Xrandr calculates possible resolutions based on a modeline

So how do I set one?

A: Adjusting display geometry in a virtual machine?

TakkatDisplay Geometry Settings in Virtual Box In Oracle Virtual Box you can adjust the virtual screen resolution after having installed the Guest Additions simply by dragging the window with the mouse or by choosing full screen mode. No need to do anything with xorg.conf. XServer 1.10 (included in ...

That's for Virtual Box but should also work in real ;)
In the bottom paragraph there is an example on how to use xrandr

Doesnt change anything

7:32 PM
xrandr -q # gives you all possible resolutions

williamt@FatalError-HP-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr -q

DFP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
CRT1 connected 1280x800+86+768 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 443mm x 249mm
My laptop display works fine
My 2nd monitor is at 1280 by 800
I want it to be at 1600 by 900
And on the left
not bottom

xrandr alrerady has a modeline fot that resolution 1600x900

Yes
but when i click it it gives me this error:

How to put it on the bottom I don't know - that's maybe done from the ATI driver

required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2966, 900), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1600, 1600
I don't want it on the bottom
it won't work on the left
only when I put it on the bottom

7:36 PM
If you driver cannot make a new virtual monitor other than CRT1 xrandr has no access to it.
I have given up on ATI some time ago, so I dont know the present state
of how to do it there.

Q: Clear Chat - Clears all of the messages in the chat window.

George Edison Screenshot About Ever wish you could simply clear all of the messages from the chat window (similar to a terminal)? Well now you can with this UserScript! Simply install it using the link below and click the clear button - and that's it! License MIT License Download Get it here: http:...

:P
@GeorgeEdison I get an error in stackapplet

You do?

My log-in name is forgotten when I quit.

It forgets your user ID for a certain site?

7:43 PM
no

@William It may come from your laptop screen not being able to get more lines than 768.

@GeorgeEdison both, last time it was stack overflow and askubuntu

So it forgets all of your user IDs?

:3170830 my name, it says now "connection error" "no accounts"
@GeorgeEdison yes

Ah, okay. Try this: quit the app and delete ~/.stackapplet. Then start the application again.

7:45 PM
@GeorgeEdison ok brb

Enter the settings again and then restart the app one last time.
That should fix everything.

I have to admit that I am impressed by MyUnity.

@GeorgeEdison ~/.stackapplet can't find it

Hmm... in Nautilus?
...or in the terminal?

$ cd /.stackapplet
bash: cd: /.stackapplet: No such file or directory
terminal ofc
:P

7:47 PM
cd ~/.stackapplet
Try that ---^

@GeorgeEdison ooo thats handy

@GeorgeEdison thanks, it works now! :)

just installed the HUD

@Alvar Great :)
Anyone know of a CDN hosting liveQuery?

:)

7:58 PM
@GeorgeEdison Google.

They host it?

Oh wait, liveQuery ...
I read that as jQuery for some reason. :P

I've got it hosted here but I would much prefer using a CDN.

Mhmm, what is it used for?

A UserScript (or two).

8:02 PM
Where csn I find the square chrome logo I see in a lot of screenshots?

One second...
@William This?

Yep.
How do I make it my chrome icon in the dash?
I mean the dock
Whatever it's called
You know what I mean

8:13 PM
How do i change my chrome icon to that?

You either install the Faenza icon theme or you can create a custom .desktop file with that icon set.

@GeorgeEdison "... And one more thing!" Why is the icon grey instead of white?

You can change that... there's a setting for it.

@GeorgeEdison no? I can only find black / white ...

@Alvar Really?

8:28 PM
@GeorgeEdison DOH

Is there any way I can only use certain icons from the Faneza icon set?

@GeorgeEdison I was 100% that I had white theme on! but I had black ...
forgot I reset the system settings...
O.o

@William Yes, you can extract the icons and point to them in the .desktop file.

How?
I apologize for my noobness
I only like some of the icons though

8:37 PM
Uhm, I'm not sure but I think there is a question on AU about that.

I can't find anything.

@BrunoPereira I have updated my question: askubuntu.com/questions/99111/…. Reverted to 11.10 but the issue is still there

@William What... lol!

Yep. Believe it.
Couldn't find a higher reolutioon image, so it looks pixelated.
Too bad.

I don't have a higher-res. image.

OK.

1 hour later…
11:39 PM
ok so my dual boot is kinda messed right now - windows is taking a LONG ass time to load the desktop from login or lock screen(40-50 times as long as normal)... also from hibernate / sleep the desktop is crashing.. (no windows work... mouse is responsive but that is it until I reboot). This started a few days ago, and I have literally changed nothing, nor have I installed any new software. I just don't get it!
being that it is windows... the only thing I have on there is a game. and it saves to battlenet... so i'm not too concerned about just blowing away windows and re-installing.. however when I setup the dual boot I was told to install windows first.. so will the re-install of windows mess with my ubuntu side of things? will it try to mess with GRUB?

It will erase Grub from the MBR :P
But you can easily restore it after.

is it hard to do so?

@rlemon just need to reinstall grub after you install ubuntu

Do I need the ubuntu cd again (i'd have to find it)

sorry after win

11:42 PM
Yes.

with your ubuntu cd
:)

ok, so i'll have to make sure I have that cd before I proceed.
where did i put you...

@rlemon bootable usb cand do the job aswell

yea then i have to find one of my drives... i have literally like 10+ 4-16gb thumb drives, keep buying them because the cats get hold of them and i can't find them again for months.
same with my micro sd / sd

11:44 PM
@rlemon so your cats find those as fun toys too huh?

I thought the keyboard was the cat's toy...?

my cats love everything.. especially my toes rages

I lost a thumb drive with my "mission critical" ssh keys for a few weeks because my cat was batting it around the house. He was crouched by the couch staring at something, i lifted it up and found it sitting a nice and cozy under the sofa.

After all - my cat can write Perl just by sleeping on the keyboard.

@rlemon you just have to love cats :)

11:45 PM
(Of course, this is hypothetical - I don't actually own a cat.)

"try to program barefoot", Challenge Accepted :P - DAMN CATS! Y U BITE TOES!
@bioShark I have two - one is 5 years old and she is a farm cat I have had since she was only a few days.. so she is quite attached to me (follows me from room to room and sleeps next to me, its cute and annoying at the same time)
the other I just got, he is roughly 8-9 months old.. beautiful looking guy - but it looks like he's been a stray his whole life - I got him right as it was getting cold out and didn't want him to freeze to death..

Great answer: Why does my computer get less battery life with Ubuntu compared to Windows? http://askubuntu.com/questions/93654/why-does-my-computer-get-less-battery-life-with-ubuntu-compared-to-windows/93661#93661 #laptop

@rlemon very noble gesture. Hat off to you

well I call the humane society in my area and ask them what they would do if I brought in a stray. They said 7 days, if no one claims / adopts him in that time they euthanize them.

@rlemon I have a 2.5 year old turkish angora, white as snow. She loves sleeping on my desk while I work. Not once she has shutdown my pc from the keyboard shut-down key :)

11:50 PM
the new one likes it behind my monitor.. but it's a led tv I use as a monitor so it's not even warm or anything.
lol, loves ubuntu one - click with the phone - 2 minutes later it's synced to my pc
they like to sleep in laundry baskets

Linux pocket guide is my cat's favorite cushin on the desk

i am currently using 12.04 . some of my appindicator is not working like gnome-pie,cryptkeeper

wait 2 and a half months?
