7:30 PM
idp?

<sigh> I really hate relying on other people to go anywhere. Ugh.

no, you cannot ask Himarm for a ride to the store.

@NapoleonWilson Da...wut? Are you talking about wanting to drive while you're in the US?
HAHAHA! Poor Himarm ;)

i thought you were going to vegas?
no one drives in vegas. what would the cabbies do all day?
plus, you can basically walk from one end of the strip to the other without actually going outside
which is good, because a human being outside in Vegas at midday has an estimated lifespan of ~11 seconds.

I am. I'm leaving Wednesday morning. I'm driving to Vegas. My mom begged me to drive. She's renting me a car to drive all of her crap because she doesn't trust airlines with her wedding dress and stuff.

7:39 PM
well, portland to vegas is only like, 1000 miles or so, right?
that's about the same as the baltimore to orlando drive and I've done that plenty of times.

@steelershark Yeah. My EU license should already be pretty good, but I wanted to look up if I need an IDP, too, which is apparently a per-state issue.
@KutuluMike International Driving Permit.

Q: What was the ship under construction initially called?

cdeIn Star Trek Beyond, there was a ship under construction on the massive moon space station Yorktown. This ship is rechristened as the NCC-1701-A after the NCC-1701 is destroyed. In the original timeline, the ship that became the Enterprise-A was the Yorktown, but in the new timeline, the space st...

> Yes, Nevada honors licenses and permits issued by the appropriate government agency in another state or country. An International Driver License is not required for foreign visitors.

@KutuluMike Yep. About that. It's about 14 hours. No big deal :)

@KutuluMike But maybe I want to drive some part of the Vegas-Portland trip. Afterall, I want the full USA experience, including driving a lonely car in the desert. ;-)
@KutuluMike Whoa, thanks. Where did you get this from? (And can you do the California and Oregon parts, too? ;-))

7:41 PM
that was from the nevada DMV FAQ
do you need to go through CA to get to Portland?

@KutuluMike I didn't even find the FAQ, the navigation was a mess.

Mike's right. It's international.

well it depends on the state. i'm checking.

@KutuluMike Someone I know who's done that drive a few times said you do, if I remember correctly.

@KutuluMike Yes. Just a small portion. That's the way that I go. You're only in CA for a few hours.

7:43 PM
in Washington State your foreign license is good for up to a year after you enter the country.

The U.S. does not require an international driving permit to drive in the country; however, you may need to show one in order to rent a car.
That's from that link ^^

Hehe, just looked onto my driver's license after years, and saw that stupid 16-year old moron face on it. ;-)

@steelershark yes, but individual states might.
but so far, Washington and Oregon seem to have recipricol agreements with Germany specifically
so I think you'll be fine.

@steelershark Apparently it's a state issue, though.

your German license would actually let you apply for a WA license immediately.

7:45 PM
I don't know. I just found it on that link.

> If you're not a U.S. citizen, you can legally drive in Washington with a valid foreign driver's license for up to 1 year. After this time, you must apply for a Washington driver's license.

@NapoleonWilson WTF? Don't you have to renew your license with a new pic every so often?

@steelershark Um, not that I know of at least. ;-)

hrm. Oregon is actually looking sketchy:
> Oregon permits a non-US citizen to drive for up to one year with an International Driver's Permit in the State.

I know I have to renew my passport and ID, but not the driver's license.
It might be different in the US, where the driver's license seems to be pretty much your ID. But that's what we have the actual ID for here.

7:47 PM
He's not driving in Oregon, anyways. He just has some burning desire to drive in the desert for some strange reason :P

> The State of California does not recognize an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a valid driver license. California does recognize a valid driver license that is issued by a foreign jurisdiction (country, state, territory) of which the license holder is a resident.

See. You're all good, Napoleon. Just don't kill us ;)

you probably won't get as far as WA then.
or even OR
just drive around Nevada.
NV and CA will both recognize your German license.

Yep!

7:49 PM
normally I would suggest just go for it anyway and play dumb tourist if you get caught.

Well, I could as well have looked it up earlier. Seems no issue to get an IDP anyway. But well, Nevada is fine already.

but cops are more likely to harrass you if they know you're not gonna show up for a hearing if they ticket you

@KutuluMike Well, sure. Afterall I could just switch fast with my passenger anyway. But in my current situation I also would not like to risk a possible crime that could make revisiting or even migrating to the US difficult in the near future.

Ohhh...I would love to see Napoleon try and talk his way out of a ticket! That would be awesome.

well, as far as that goes... a traffic ticket that you paid on time would probably not even register.
traffic violations have their own class of crime.. "moving violation".

7:52 PM
@NapoleonWilson I don't think that a moving violation would hinder that in any way. I don't know.

it doesn't become a real crime unless 1) there's alcohol involved, 2) someone gets hurt, or 3) you don't pay your tickets.
but still. no reason to tempt fate.
but it's not like you're driving through appalachian country or anything.
no hick-town sherriff with a speed trap waiting to harrass "furners"

@NapoleonWilson I also want to see how we would pull off switching places with a cop behind us ;)

sit on his lap the whole time. then they can't prove anything

@steelershark Sure, I might just be paranoid. But the US I know (from movies & TV) puts you in jail pretty fast, if you're lucky. ;-) (Well, I'm joking.)

nah. not CA
they're laid back. especially northern CA/OR
they're all high anyway.

7:54 PM
Oh my...I can smell a ticket coming ;)

Northern CA is like Oregon's mexico

I don't feel like responding to Mike with a "...", but that lap thing's just a clear "..." target. So
...

Like I said...I smell a ticket coming for some form of violation ;)
I'm curious what kind of ticket that would be...hmmmm ;)

^ nsfw language but hilarious

Indecent Exposure?

7:58 PM
hey. i was just talking about a simple lap seat. dunno what YOU two were thinking.

OMG. That dog is frigging hilarious.

(I don't know if it's because I don't really conciously follow it that much anymore, but I can't help but feel that American Hustle is just "cool" dialogue and flashbacks over any kind of actual story, the Ocean's effect to the extreme.)

I don't know what Napoleon is thinking. Gheez! He has his mind in the gutter or something :P
Finally! My frigging sister is ready to go. See you guys :)
runs

@steelershark Have fun!
@steelershark You still didn't say if you liked Priest's Desert Plains, though. But I hope I know the answer already anyway.

Q: Was the Star Fleet officer connected to the later series?

cdeIn Star Trek Beyond, we are briefly introduced to a high ranking Star Fleet officer Commodore Paris. In the original timeline, Voyager had Admiral Owen Paris, and his son Tom Paris. Is Commodore Paris name meant to establish a career military family history for the Paris Family? Is there any evid...

8:14 PM
@Passerby Interesting question, although I haven't seen the film yet.

Q: Identify this film?

DanielleI THINK a guy sneaks out to someone's house (possibly wrong on this bit) and his family get killed by some gang and he seeks revenge there's a bit where he goes to a hospital and sees the guy he's running from and then towards the end he goes to a football game or something and there's bombs ther...

8:44 PM
Anyway, smoke break. Maybe I can come up with something for Legends of the Fall. While the bear and the rock quote are good starting points, I don't really want to downright steal the film's own dialogue too much.

2 hours later…
10:51 PM
@steelershark Apparently I can't bring my cigarillos with me, so I won't bother you with smoking. ;-)

layover in cuba == problem solved

@KutuluMike Meh, the day trip on the plane is enough (and the label still says that I didn't buy 'em there).

but the statute doesn't say you have to buy them there, only that your trip " included travel to Cuba"...

Hmm, granted. But still, the flight time is enough already, even if I'm travelling back in time on the trip there.

11:39 PM
@NapoleonWilson I did! I sent you an email ;)

@steelershark Oh, lemme check!

@NapoleonWilson I told you that you won't bother me with smoking! It doesn't bother me what you smoke ;)

Whohohohoa!
Anyway, I like Judas Priest very much. So much to that. ;-)

Yeah. Judas Priest is awesome.

@steelershark I certainly won't be smoking Cuban cigrallos for sure. But anyway, I don't really have to smoke at all. I asked just in case.
In fact that's one of my favourite songs from them.

11:45 PM
@NapoleonWilson Well, isn't that a coincidence ;)
I will have to dig through my CD's...

@steelershark At this point I wouldn't call that a coincidence anymore. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson Oh, Lord. I'm not in the right state of mind to discuss coincidences right now :P

@steelershark Well, I am, hehe!

@NapoleonWilson Haha! Yeah...I know that you absolutely love this. Argh! ;)

And I also drank one bourbon, one scotch and one beer a wine, a scotch and a grappa. ;-)

11:51 PM
At least we left early. My sister said that she was sick. Hehe!
@NapoleonWilson God Dammit!! I always seem to miss you when you're drinking!!

@steelershark It's not that serious, though.
I am not wasted after three drinks. ;-P

Yeah, yeah, yeah ;-(
Hey...nice Thorogood reference, btw!

@steelershark She loves you?
@steelershark Well, Hooker originally. (But yeah, I like Thorogood's version even more, of course.)
(But Hooker is great anyway.)

@NapoleonWilson HAHAHA! My...aren't you just full of it tonight? ;)

@steelershark I'm not the one throwing Beatles references around.
