Main display calibration report: fierydragonlord.com/displaycal/…
Acer IPS display calibration report: fierydragonlord.com/displaycal/…
(odd resolution spec is due to DPI scaling)

yro.slashdot.org/story/16/06/08/1037206/… I personally think whichever consultant suggested this needs to be shot is getting paid too much. He does realise that government often sources stuff from outside, and they use this thing called the internet to share information, right?

Your thoughts on the calibration results?

1 hour later…
1:20 AM
Contrast ratio is very low on the Acer monitor (221:1). IPS glow?
Eyeballed it with the lights off. It's IPS glow.
Your thoughts?

heh. My TN bleeds more than my IPS screens

0.3725 cd/m² is awfully high. Light during calibration may have caused issues here...
I might have to rerun the calibration routine.
I'm going to redo calibration.

Just going to rerun the calibration process without generating new profiles.

1:47 AM
Okay. It wasn't a fluke. I didn't recalibrate the display or change anything. I just generated another calibration report using the current color profile with the lights off and it's IPS glow.
I got 0.364 cd/m² this time.
Not going to upload the new calibration reports.
Well, I never found it to be an issue. Color calibration hardware and software can find problems in your displays you never knew existed...
...and compensate for them remarkably well.
Examined the LUT curves. It's not a botched calibration.

Can i view a txt file in Command line in Windows 8.1 ?

Doesn't look like backlight bleed to me.

@Neil you can use the type command

I tend to have cat and less installed tho

1:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thanks :)

and its worth getting some flavour of less if you do that a lot

Your thoughts on IPS glow and whether it's an issue?

28 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
heh. My TN bleeds more than my IPS screens
and practically my bias lighting mitigates that somewhat.

You could pipe the type stuff into more

@JourneymanGeek has a "Good dog" badge on Steam! LOL

2:16 AM
that's from a game I bought him, I think

Ooof... you're a higher level than me! :<
Although, looking at my friends list, that's not hard.

I think you can get lots of levels just by... buying games >.<
But that's a bit silly IMHO...

@ThatBrazilianGuy I tend to pick up games on discount

Who cares at virtual internet points, anyway? No one on this site, obviously... ;p
@JourneymanGeek I only pick up games on discount.

2:24 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy I have a few exceptions

I only pick up games on viscount

Steam <season> Sale? Buy all the things.

Humble bundle? Buy the 1 USD tier.

Its usually worth it in most cases to go for average or fixed price tiers

I did it more when the USD/BRL parity was better...
And when I was a little more careless with my money
I'm trying to waste a little bit less of money now
WHY YES CLIPPY, ARE YOU GIVING FREE MONEY?
...currently I have a big hole in my living room, plumbing repaires are expensive .__.

2:36 AM
...never mind.
The monitor needs a while to warm up and reach full brightness.
It takes much longer than expected for it to warm up.

2:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I normally always buy the max level, unless it includes a $75 game or physical option.

Displays are being recalibrated.

speaking of cheap/gree games...

It helps that both laptop and Acer display have brightness adjustments to 1%. The Acer display also has RGB adjustment.

@JourneymanGeek Dammit! A gamified game sale?! My one weakness, how did you know?!!!

Bob
3:04 AM
@MichaelFrank One way to overcome it is to be at work - then forget the sale by the time you get home :P
Side effects may include later feelings of regret.

GoG is not so bad, I don't have a massive sense of nostalgia with many of the games they have on sale.

Bob
Hm... I have no idea what to have for lunch.

food is always a good idea

Bob
I suppose I could try that, yea.

3:14 AM
cause otherwise, you put the chew in pica.

Bob
o.O

LOL. "You know why I don't do Lenovo ThinkPad repair videos? Because they don't break."

3:31 AM
@allquixotic actually, that's true
Well, I've had one thinkpad that broke
fell off a desk
twice.
and I have a pair of 9ish year old ones that run fine with minor upgrades

Louis is so inspiring... but at the same time, I feel like I already know 99% of his advice and live by it myself
life coach, hackjob EE... ;p

3:59 AM
@DavidPostill yeah, the plugin automatically does that

A: How to react professionally when introduced as an expert?

Li ZhiI disagree with most of the comments/answers to the OP. Aside from the obvious (already pointed out) that someone coming to you isn't the same situation as you in a meeting with some (unspecified) number of people, and the just as obvious comment that each situation is unique, being modest is use...

holy wall of text

5:23 AM
Disagreeing with everyone elses answers as well as putting a wall of text. No wonder its downvoted already.

Bob
Disagreement is fine. But that's such a big wall I can't read past the first sentence.
Not won't, can't.

Its an actual wall of text too
not "I don't know you can doublespace for a new line"

5:43 AM
Does anyone know if that last one is just a Made up example? Did you hear about the time a GE electric turbine broke down in Oregon? They called GE in NY and an expert flew out (charging $1000/hr INCLUDING travel time!) ??

I heard a similar story about a mainframe...
though that sorta charge for a consultant sounds right

6:01 AM
Must be nice.

Essentially though these guys are folks with a ton of experience, and a big heavyweight company behind them
they don't get paid 1k a hour or anything
Used to work in a small consultancy for a bit, and essentually if you're willing to pay a good consultant, they handle nearly everything.

That is very true. Experience counts for a lot of things these days. How is the hunt going?

No hits yet

Is it a tough market in your country?

Yeah
I mean, I've interviewed at 2 pretty big places
and the shitty little ones don't even get back to ya

6:15 AM
I know what you mean about that. You seem to have quite a bit of experience to back up. And you have a degree correct?

yup
BSC Computer Forensics and Information Security Management, and Management. There's a ton of dev type work (which I'm not really the person for), I've applied for a lot of tech support type jobs, and precious little stuff in data centers or junior sysadmin type things
(I dual majored.)

Sounds like you are interviewing with with the wrong people. Or they just are not seeing the real potential. Ive noticed a lot of people that do the interviews are just set on key things and even if you can do the job if they dont hear the key things they wont hire you which sucks.

@NetworkKingPin I'm not getting enough interviews

@JourneymanGeek how does your resume look?

@NetworkKingPin pretty well opimised, I've had two people look at it
I probably need to get some certs or something.
Last interview someone mentioned that
but I'm kinda not really a 'book learning' kind of person
I learn by doing

6:21 AM
Do it. Ive been told the same. Do some hands on certs.

Are there any certs you are interested in?

I could prolly do the LFS certs easily
Interested, not quite so much

I understand that. I have a few I want to go for eventually. When i get the time and money.

Yeah, there's that too
I have some stashed away from my last job, but not that much of a buffer. I'd be in serious shit if I weren't living with my parents

6:49 AM
Thats good. And dont blame you ive had to got back to the parents for a bit. was there about 4 months ago for a while to get back on my feet and save enough to get out again. Last relationship messed up a lot for me.

7:19 AM
I have Robotics certs!
😈

@Rahul2001 what do you have?
Ive thought about getting into robotics for fun.

@NetworkKingPin I won internationally
Many competitive
Competitions*
IRO, WRO, FTC, FLL, IRC

Very nice.

😈😈😈

Do you have any of your robotic projects on your blog?

7:29 AM
hello

What up @Burgi

Bob
'lo

Bob
lol
I just saw a "Bergi" on Code Review and got confused.

7:32 AM
wrong vowel

There are 2 Burgis on SU

@DavidPostill salvete!

the other @Burgi also lives near me according to his profile

The other one has a burgiblog!

A: Encrypting user data with their password?

HedgeMageThere are a number of considerations here, I'll try to lay them out one at a time for ease of following: What must the site do with the data? Oftentimes, we ask web sites to do things on our behalf when we are not actually visiting them. For example, I may want crypto.SE to email me when there...

@JourneymanGeek What did you use to send stuff to your phone?

7:39 AM
@Bob variably? Pushbullet, airdroid...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Uh... what's the difference? :P
And do they have a web interface, or does it require a desktop client?

@Bob airdroid is web based. Pushbullet has a desktop client
airdroid will work 'locally' tho

Bob
o.O

(phone runs a small web server)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek So pushbullet doesn't have a public webapp?

7:41 AM
@Bob it does
haven't used it through that tho

Bob
So I can use it without installing anything locally?

ah
I guess?
I tend to use airdroid there

Bob
Cool, thanks.
@JourneymanGeek can't, if they have to be on the same network

ah
(since I'm at home more now, I just plug it in ;p)

can you summarise for me?
@Rahul2001

Um... not sure I'll do a good job but...

is the video necessary or can i just listen to it (i'm in work)?

@Psycogeek How do you remove cover from meat grinder? I need to disassemble plastic one. Can't find anything repair-related online, let alone for Kenwood brand that I have...

@Burgi What he basically says is that he knows women who are good on tech, and the he absolutely hates men who go like "look, a girl in tech, how cute!", And is angry because a woman wrote an article for CNET which is clearly factually wrong, and he is all for getting rid of the stereotype, but he thinks that women have to stop writing stupid shit like that
You can just listen to it

8:03 AM
they are playing ping pong in the boardroom

Bob
Well now I'm sad. Thanks reddit... reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/4n6dj9/…
@Boris_yo with a dremel
well, depends if you want to use it again
and how much duct tape and epoxy you're willing to accept in the reassembled one

@Bob or a hatchet, if you're really in a rush
@Boris_yo ask your mom

@Rahul2001 so is his issue because a woman wrote the article? Would he have got so irate if a man had written it?

@Burgi I don't think I did a good job summarising it, just listen to the video
The woman part is kinda secondary
He's angry on general at CNET
Just... listen to the vid

i am

8:12 AM
@Bob I just want to blow its friggin cover.

Bob
@Boris_yo In all seriousness, look for screws, or seams you might be able to pry.
It might be glued, in which case you're screwed.

@Bob or it just twists off

@Boris_yo you dont remove the cover from a plastic meat grinder, you toss it out and buy an old school 1930s version in metal, which worked as good then as it does now.

@Rahul2001 i think he is a little unjustified in his rant

@Burgi did you watch it?
Oh, OK

8:17 AM
i listened to it
a lot of the time for content sites like CNET you have to write an article on a subject that you may not be 100% comfortable with.
you may even be PAID to review a certain product

@Rahul2001 generally (not iphone) if you break your glass or screen on a phone, you have "nothing to lose" to try and fix it yourself. otherwise you might as well replace the phone with the new model. because you will fork over 1/2 your money, and they could end up screwing it up too.

also he cherry picked his quotes from the article to make some bullshit claim about feminism

the only thing left that wasnt in the kit, was a fairly "clean room", and either clean gloves, or cleaning chemicals

this is the line he mentioned:
> You can find glass replacement kits cost between $10 and $25 online and they include new glass, a suction cup tool for removing your screen, pentalobe and Phillips-head screwdrivers, and prying tools.
the very next line is....
> If this sounds too good to be true, that's because it is.
all this is under the heading
> Replace it yourself? Think again.

back in resistive they did not use glues, and some devices use adhesive that is nothing that special, it can be removed slowly and carefully, mabey a bit of heat, and replaced

8:25 AM
ah hang on.... i just noticed....
> Editors' note: This was originally published on March 24, 2015, and has been updated to reflect repair pricing and details for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. The post has since been updated to add more clarification that CNET does not recommend you use a kit to replace your iPhone's screen.

Wow, so many contradictions?

Ive replaced two digitizers on the iphone 6 since its been out. Only one had to have the screen replaced too.

A human built it, that (IMO) is all you ever have to remember, your first one, not go well, but some human is capable of doing it. and "the right equiptment" can often be replaced with things around the house :-)

@Rahul2001 the original article
now that i have seen the original article i can see why they re-issued it

@Psycogeek Yeah, and pay huge export shipping fee...

8:29 AM
that guy's rant is still unjustified though

work better than a piece of plastic junk, even with some underrated motor in it.
as rarely as i ever grind my own meat or anything that i would stuff in it, the one like that has worked great, specially for how crusty old it it.

sniggers at @Psycogeek grinding his meat
sorry that was childish ;)

just made 6 apple pies too . and cleaned a toilet
(not in that order :-)

cleaned the toilet and made apple pies multitasking :)

user215373
Hi how are you all

8:42 AM
old enough to know better, young enough to do it again.

user215373
??

hehehe

Flashing Nands take forever!!!!!!

@NetworkKingPin how does one multitask an apple pie?

@JourneymanGeek well he said he cleaned the toilet too. So I thought maybe he did it at the same time. Jokingly

9:00 AM
Ah. Misread.

@kalash hey

Hm. My bus is late

isn't that default for buses?

@JourneymanGeek It will turn up at the same time as the next 2 and you will have 3 buses to choose from. You will choose the wrong one and the other 2 will get there first. The one you choose will be late. That is the "Law of Buses" :)

@DavidPostill there is only one bus I can take from here :p
@Burgi not really. I wouldn't mind but it is really hot this afternoon

@JourneymanGeek Yes, but the "Law of Buses" says that they will all have the same Bus Number/Destination :p

9:26 AM
How do I get Firefox to open http://foo.localhost? Which should map fine to 127.0.0.1 as far as I understand
Works fine in Chrome anyway

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Add it as an entry to your DNS server (or hosts file)?
2
Q: Firefox not able to open subdomains

Aman GuptaI have a nodejs app with express as backend which is running on localhost. I have subdomains associated with it like user1.localhost. These subdomains are opening in Chrome but Firefox throws Server Not Found error. Does Firefox needs some configuration to allow subdomains?

@Bob Interesting. I though it was standard that whatever.localhost resolves to 127.0.0.1

Bob
> 2. Application software MAY recognize localhost names as special, or
MAY pass them to name resolution APIs as they would for other
domain names.

And the document quoted in the Chromium ticket seems to agree: tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6761#section-6.3

9:32 AM
Well, when I nslookup foo.localhost., I get an answer from our local DNS. Which is already disappointing that it's even queried
...and that it doesn't resolve it to 127.0.0.1

@Bob I am too careful to pry open.

@OliverSalzburg does the hosts file have anything to do with this I wonder

@Psycogeek Huh? It's mechanical. I had this in eastern Europe. The advantage electrical has over another is it does all the work and you don't have to build biceps to use it.

@djsmiley2k I have no entries in my hosts file
I've now just set up a new primary DNS zone on our SBS and added wildcard A/AAAA records for the .localhost zone

Bob
@OliverSalzburg nslookup explicitly hits the DNS server

9:38 AM
DNS works fine, Firefox doesn't

Bob
ping will go through the standard system name lookup APIs

@Bob Ah, okay
C:\Users\OliverSalzburg>ping foo.localhost

Pinging foo.localhost [127.0.0.1] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
So far, so great

@Boris_yo that is what leverage is for. did you get the bottom off? the top piece is probably glued or plastic sealed, what they call that laser seam or something. You only have to beat the snot out of the first one, then you know what clips, hooks, or snaping stuff it used and how to take it off the second one.

And now it works great, after the ping. I blame caching
Thanks @Bob :)

@Boris_yo still don't matter, dremmel bandsaw, or pry it off the hard way, it would be easier to make a cap for it, than to worry about it. you (again) have nothing to lose from trying. Once you see what weasily trash is inside , then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free :-)
see thats the deal with taking apart modern china made trash AFTER it is broken. If you cant fix it, you can show the person why you wouldnt want to :-)

9:53 AM
@HackToHell Huh? Louis?
What a coincidence. I just watched his ranting video on why Amazon and eBay customers are lowest consumer lowlifes...

obviously I'm a sinner lol

oh ffs!
my boss has left a client site non-functional

@Burgi ouch!

10:10 AM
@Burgi Time to speak to the MD again?

maybe.... i'll see
he just lied to me on the phone just then which was interesting

@Burgi <evil>You need to start recording your phone conversations</evil> :)

@Burgi Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to record the phone call just incase it is blamed on you.

10:57 AM
probably

Bob
11:26 AM
Hm. I wonder if sandboxie is any good these days

anyone know how to increase the maxpoolsize?

Bob
@Burgi What? Oh, ASP.NET again?

yeah this is the site my boss left non-functional

if i can increase the poolsize for a short time while i look for a permanent fix

Bob
11:36 AM
@Burgi You probably have a leak somewhere.
Everywhere you create a new connection should be wrapped in a using block
If the connection is passed around, then you need to Dispose or Close it... and that should be in a try-finally

yeah i thought that

Bob
Ideally, connections shouldn't be passed around... they should be used and disposed of ASAP, preferably within one method body
Default max pool size is 100

i'm struggling to find the right FTP password at the mo

Bob
Unless you have a lot of concurrent connections/users, it's probably a leak

i think it is a leak too

Bob
11:40 AM
@Burgi You could always chuck FxCop at it: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms182289%28VS.100%29.aspx
I do hope you aren't storing references to connections in object fields...

@Bob i have no idea, this is not a site i have built
its exposing the SQL statement when it fails though

Bob
That's also bad :P
FxCop will at least catch most of them
How much code is there?

12k files

Bob
A text search on SqlConnection might catch most of the rest
owowowow
hmm... maybe a find references search? -_-

some of that might be media etc

Bob
11:43 AM
most of it better be media!
we had tens of thousands of icons :P

its still trying to do the initial source control commit
