Ignore it
Unless I can answer it

...being oversensitive here no doubt, but was it anyone around here, a downvote on this one: askubuntu.com/q/775845/72216 if so, please explain.

I don't see one

@Zacharee1 it's on the question :)

I don't see a reason I mean ;p

@Zacharee1 yeah, it's the same as ever, if you get one, you're furious if you think it is unjust, after five minutes, "who cares"...

1:12 PM
I got two random downvotes on two questions

@Zacharee1 yeah, I do think these voting junkies are an issue.

yurp
o_O

@Maybe time for a "ten tips to abuse the voting system"

This SNL skit...
@JacobVlijm none of those people are going to see it.

@Zacharee1 very true I am afraid...

1:15 PM
Anyone recognize the actor? (I know who it is)

...Can't be Morgan Freeman

no.... no it can't....

Google it. :D

especially since Morgon Freeman doesn't exist... :p

@Zacharee1 did anyone write Morgon? not me :)

1:17 PM
I didn't see it
hint: SNL

jackie chan??

no

(removed)

Is he called Raymond?

1:26 PM
no

John Oliver?

lolno

Zacharee1?

o-O

Is that you in the photo? :D
lol

1:29 PM
no..........................................................

Who is that guy?

Fred Armisen in the latest SNL episode

Hello :)

Hi ☺ ☺

Hey :)

1:42 PM
Ha!

Too Many Greetings.
Greetings

@JacobVlijm I compensated the downvote ! :) Hi Jacob ! :)

@cl-netbox Ah, that's nice. I didn't mean to, I am really curious to who did it and why, but I guess I am naive, it was probably a randomly made one...
....Is everyone as sensitive to them as I am?

@JacobVlijm no you are not naive ... I hate these undeserved downvotes as much as you do ... a few days ago I got some for good and working solutions ! :)

...I rarely do it, and if, I always tell why and keep and I on what happens, looking for an opportunity to revert...

1:50 PM
@JacobVlijm good and nice attitude ... so do I :) IMHO it should be upvote or not ... if posts are really bad, rude or wrong : delete ! :) that's it ... :)

Don't tell anyone :), but after each unjust downvote I got ever, in a split second I think: ok, I am out, not doing this anymore. BUT.. only a split second so far :). I guess this is the price we have to pay for a generally useful system.
@cl-netbox True.

Hmm. This new ROM has its own installation. I hope it doesn't overwrite anything
Seems to have worked

@JacobVlijm : all good things are ... ? ... three ! - upvoted your 2 new nice answers as well ! :) Hope that helps against frustration ! :)

Wow, thanks a lot!

@JacobVlijm You're welcome ! :)

1:57 PM
@RobotHumans you pinged me (much) earlier?

@jacob a downvotw ? not from me or ? but still im as well sensible to them somehow

@JacobVlijm Yes. On your profile it reads something like enjoy thinking about/chewing on problems more than actually doing the math. I was wondering if you'ld ever toyed with the machine learning thing.

feels like wow i tried to help and then boom , i had that yesterday
sorry my error right now i just woke up

@RobotHumans machine learning thing?

oops. I forgot the data fix

2:00 PM
@JacobVlijm making computers do possibly random math to try and solve a problem for you given that you put the right tools on the table for them.

@RobotHumans That sounds (very) interesting!

@JacobVlijm A few books deep now, trying to put together some code on it on the next few days off. I thought it was a subject you might enjoy reading on or doing.

....But its true, also in my "other" live, realizing a concepts is much less interesting then creating one in your mind.

funy thing os @JacobVlijm i wrote three answers today and the shortest one got upvotes lol while the others where i spend at least ~30 min per not got a single up lol, in fact one questioner even changed the question after my answer

@RobotHumans Absolutely, any tips on reading?

2:04 PM
@and hello on all others

@Videonauth yeah, know the feeling. Some answers you spend a day on don't get votes, another one liner, even without a solution, gets sky high :) I'll never fully understand...

i just took @cl-netbox as inspiration and answered two virtualbox questions today

@Videonauth Hi ! :)
@Videonauth FYI : I added a note about the new keys to my older vbox answers ! :)

cool :)

2:06 PM
@RobotHumans please let me know! need to go, have to cook diner for some friends :) See you later all.

I went with 3 free ones to start. Some CC from bittorrent (not copyleft, but CC... so legal torrent) that started on kickstarter, and one free from lulu is a decent start. I was hoping you had done some reading and had recommendations.

Artificial intelligence for humans vols 1-3 was a little weak, but it was CC and free. So, what do you want right?

I don't remember which one was free on lulu. Might have been a field guide to genetic algorithms

--> askubuntu.com/questions/775823/… <-- the one who changed the question

l8r

--> askubuntu.com/questions/775762/… <-- and here the asker seem disappeared

2:48 PM
I don't have to worry about my Pi overheating... it's snowing :P

well in case of natural liquid cooling then worry more about electric short circurits :)

3:04 PM
@NathanOsman dafuq
And people are complaining about the weird weather in PA

maybe someone knows this, if i install ubuntu-server on top of a desktop enviroment, will this cause the DE to fail ?

Try it in a VM

3:19 PM
good idea
since im not on my laptop anymore this should be easy now
starting a VM on my laptop is like snail TV , e.g.1 frame every 2 minutes

lol

3:34 PM
@Videonauth Should not harm the desktop, I think:
The following NEW packages will be installed
  bcache-tools btrfs-tools byobu cloud-guest-utils cloud-initramfs-copymods cloud-initramfs-dyn-netconf cryptsetup cryptsetup-bin
  dmeventd fonts-ubuntu-font-family-console git git-man grub-legacy-ec2 ifenslave libdevmapper-event1.02.1 libdumbnet1
  liberror-perl liblvm2app2.2 liblvm2cmd2.02 liblxc1 libreadline5 lvm2 lxc-common lxcfs lxd lxd-client mdadm open-iscsi
  open-vm-tools overlayroot pastebinit python3-newt run-one screen sosreport tmux ubuntu-cloudimage-keyring ubuntu-server uidmap

well i just finished installing a 16.04 VM

took you long enough
:)

10 minutes long ?
including online updates while instaling ?

I think this poor guy could profit from some more attention:

Q: Can't restore encrypted backup created with 10.04's deja-dup on 14.04

Rick WhiteI ran a Deja-Dup backup on an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS machine. It was an older version of Deja-Dup that came with 10.04 LTS. I password protected it. Then I installed 14.04.3 LTS Trusty Tahr from the 'Try first' and 'Install' CD on the drive, erasing and reformatting the drive. Installation was seamle...

Not sure if anybody of you has an idea that might help him...

phew hard one

Q: Is the "Ubuntu Spyware" thing still relevant?

allanonmageI stumbled across some articles from 2012 lambasting Ubuntu for adding in a new feature that adds online searches to desktop searches. In doing some due diligence, I see that all the news and uproar is from 2012 and there seems to be nothing newer. I think this is the original article, ars tech...

lol
Acting quite high and mighty

who ?

The OP

Richard Stallman style
@ByteCommander at least i could give him a little bump :)

4:17 PM
@Videonauth why... are people closing that?
hmm, I guess it is kinda messy.

IMHO I think answers on this will be primary opinion based and more cause for flame than everything else
at least that was my reason to vote on closeing it
but if i was wrong tell me and i retract my vote

@Seth You made a good and correct comment ! :) Hi ! :)

i didnt donwvote it tho
not worth me loosing a point for that :p

Ohai.

You don't lose points for downvoting questions @Videonauth

4:29 PM
@Videonauth you're not really wrong, but I just think it's easier to answer their question than try and close it.
it is a legitimate question after all.
Someone already provided a nice answer.

This needs closed as Opinion Based. If it's not, it's going to be a flamepost
we had an argument on this very issue on #ubuntu-server with someone yesterday

@ThomasW. lol ^^^
scroll up a bit :p

actually made me go buy a drink the guy was so argumentative
got drunk last night
@Zacharee1 E: Mobile

o_O
:p

the button showing more msgs isn't working
I just have a nice keyboard for my phone :)
point missed though, it needs only one more close vote :P
so someone has to cast it to close :P

4:34 PM
meh, it's answered.
it could use a little rewording though

could still be closed, the ultimate question seems centered on "Is it an issue" which is an opinion based question either way
some would argue "It's disabled, but not gone, so therefore it's still bad"
vs. the "It's disabled, so you're okay now" argument

I'm thinking about it
but you could try plying jokerdino

just leave the poor question alone. He got his answer and he can choose to use Ubuntu orn ot.

o_O

@jokerdino when it turns into a larger argument i'll remind you you said this
:p

4:36 PM
at which point, I will have it shut down.

@jokerdino yes ... wise words spoken ! Hi ! :)

given the last four of those discussions i've observed, it fires up fast :P

well thankfully this isn't realtime IRC.

@ThomasW. I know. Let's make new accounts, answer some questions, get 50 rep and then start an argument

bans zach

4:37 PM
@Seth thank god, but one of the discussions I referred to was on a discussion on a blog post :p

heheheh

the rest were IRC :p

@ThomasW. oh my lol

@Seth DO EET

if I could find a half decent IRC client I would appear there more often.

4:37 PM
@Seth yeah, it wasn't pretty

but there is not a single one that will close itself and go away from my sight whilst still being connected. Except konversation. But KDE. in GNOME. :/

These people have misdirected paranoia. I feel for them.
I hate IRC. Because it sucks all my time.

I thought it just sucks.
(ok no, j/k)
hmm, to reinstall slack, or pretend it never existed.

@Seth which i upvoted because i wasnt able to type something which wasnt tainted by my own opinion

@Seth i need your mod powers
and a shotgun
Looks to me like 4 people didn't read the question and got buthurt. Way to be friendly to a n00b there Ubuntu SE'ers! — allanonmage 3 mins ago
bombs away

4:41 PM
my butt feels just fine thank you very much.

@Seth :D

@Seth there's a "rude or offensive" flag on it, please execute the destruction that comment deserves. :p

now where did I put my jerky.

@Seth my german shepherd Echo stole it
I kid, but a friend has such dog :P

@Zacharee1 didnt know that, well still its a legitime question even if it will provoke opinion based answers, and its clear whats being asked so no need to downvote it

4:45 PM
She would probably be too pretty to stop.
@Videonauth agreed.
ugh. Well I'm not getting chili lime again. $3 or no.

@Seth heheheh, yes, the dog would be too pretty to stop, but it's also a military veteran
:p
i know too many military people :P

@ThomasW. nice.

@Seth star time

mhmm weird 16.04 has surely some flaws in their packaging for apache2 and php
i only get a blank site when using php, not even any tesxt of the script showing

[Sun May 22 19:08:49.516422 2016] [:error] [pid 8863] [client 127.0.0.1:59274] PHP Fatal error:  require_once(): Failed opening required '/usr/share/php/php-gettext/gettext.inc' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php') in /usr/share/phpmyadmin/libraries/select_lang.lib.php on line 477

5:32 PM
anyone familiar with the setup of mysql, can the user debian-sys-maint be deleted without imapct ?
or at least deactivated ?

why?

well dunno he has grant all
not feeling right somehow
and this machine can be reached from outside

@Videonauth You're free to tweak things as you need to, AIUI it's for upgrades and setup.
@Videonauth Youmay want to verify where it can actually login from (actually check the tables where user access is defined)

because if they can only login from localhost, and you secure localhost access, you should be OK
(this is why I like postgres lolol - super finegrained controls!)

5:38 PM
well to get real localhost access you would have to come past me :)

:P

and that could be difficult ^^
very ...

5:53 PM
Just came in from outside after capturing this:
I still think they are kinda ugly...

Q: Practical method to safely use a USB stick on daily basis for Linux

tarWhich practical method exist for safely using a USB stick on a daily basis, for Linux-based systems (e.g. Ubuntu) ? With emphasis over the following: I'm well aware that nothing is 100% secure when connecting a USB stick to PC. It is on a daily basis - means that it has to be relatively quic...

I don't think I posted this one either:
I finished that one last night.
I recorded 10 GB worth of video with the Pi this morning - about 43 minutes to sort through later.
We'll see if I captured anything interesting...
And I should invest in a larger SD card :D
(The video was truncated after running out of space on /.)
Also MTP is evil.

@NathanOsmancongratulations you now have 7 suscribers :)

8 now :D

6:03 PM
nice background music

Can't take credit for it - I just used one of the stock background songs.
But it did seem to fit well.

yes
Are you going to make a video of hatching of those eggs??
@NathanOsman ^

I missed them hatching :(
I was still trying to configure the camera when that happened.

@NathanOsman could you please give me link to that background music?

I can give you the name of it...

6:16 PM
okay

Q: Console keymapping

Quaxton HaleI have installed Arch Linux on my Thinkpad W530, and none of the Fn-Fx keys or the volume buttons work. However, they do work before I have booted into Arch at the Grub menu. I also have Ubuntu installed prior, and was wondering if I could somehow copy over the keymappings for use in my Arch in...

ok a question vor the serve savy people i installed ubuntu-server and now when i run a sudo find / -name "searchword" i gt tons of permission denied from lxcfs directories ? how can i change that ?

6:28 PM
just pipe the errors to /dev/null. append: 2>/dev/null

mhmmm

you shouldn't be reading in those directories if you're getting permission denied. that or something is seriously messed up.

ah
and you're making a new one?
Well I've just copied the S-Pen apps to CyanogenMod. I wonder if it'll work :p

well, using the framework orga made, making sure it gets the new design by user agent and logos and whatnot

ah

7:49 PM
@ThomasW. I will remove all those comments in that answer.

@Terrance @ThomasW. and if you got a final verdict please let me know xD

@Videonauth All I know is that with NAT enabled on my Mac, even on the localhost, I cannot SSH to the VM without doing your port forwarding. When I turn that off, I get timed out trying to connect to it.

so same as on ubuntu then :)
i have to enable the port forwarding as well here

I believe so. Leave the port enabling there. I like that part of it, as it was super easy to setup. =)

yeah once you figured that part out the setup is pretty straight forward

7:54 PM
Exactly! =)

i even made me a script for starting my VM and waiting 60 seconds and logging me in so one command till i get an ssh pw promt

Very cool!

Hello guys :D

@Videonauth By the way, I was able to SSH through my Mac to the VM by doing the same command but changing the localhost to my IP of my Mac. Worked great! =)

#!/bin/bash
if [ "$1" == "--headless" ]
then
    vboxmanage startvm Kali-Linux --type headless &&
    sleep 60 &&
    ssh -l root localhost -p 2222
else
    vboxmanage startvm Kali-Linux
fi

7:57 PM
Looks good! =)

this way one command start normal command --headless starts headless

I was about to flag this as not an answer, but then I remembered my last similar flag was rejected. whats your opinion??

it is an answer tho, but very low quality, you might be able to edit it tho so not a reason to flag for that either
so simply clean it up edit it to look a bit nicer i would say

hm..

@Videonauth I gotta run. You got my +1 for that answer, as it really helped me too! =)

8:00 PM
I just saw the corner of my screen and its showing 1:30AM :O :O !!

@SeverusTux @Videonauth I assume the user is also the one asking the question so it will be an answer ;)

i never know the time i have a post-it sticker there for obvious reasons
@Rinzwind as for the names no he isnt the one asking the question

@Rinzwind no they are Different.

@Videonauth the 2nd one is not logged in probably ;)

> "I’ll be back in town ASAP. The Jamaican airport doesn’t have any flights until tomorrow, but I figure if I start driving back to the States now, I’ll beat the plane anyways."
O_o

8:03 PM
this part of the answer " I have solved the problem" I'd say it is the same user @Videonauth @SeverusTux

well i mfine with it like i said make it look a bit nicer and let it be

@Seth does that not require a lot of SWIMMING?

Ah... may be you are right

@Rinzwind or a submarine..

@Seth maybe he has a car that can drive under water? :-P

8:05 PM
I guess :P

he probably looked at google maps if there search for a way to NYC from my place out it gives me as well a route lol
which includes swimming/boat

@Seth Should I mark a question as duplicate even if its answered and accepted ?? About to mark this as a duplicate of my own post here

ah no they cahnged it meanwhile :) just tested it gives me now a flight estimate time and even the average price for flying

@SeverusTux yeah

8:25 PM
Hmmm slight better on the tablet, still didn't give the desktop website...

hahaha @Videonauth Your answer as first answer posted by new user :

then it is a test :)
i have 4000+ rep
still .. funny :D

yeah :D

even one of my longest and detailed answers i have written here :p

Congratulations! you passed the test . lol

8:31 PM
dont worry wyou will come across tests which ar not that obvious
even i got my fair share on review audits failed

nah... If I have any doubt. I just open it in a new tab. It shows --> post doesnot exist --> its a test. I remember posting this as a bug on meta
@Videonauth

trust me the first post que is the easiest one still

@Videonauth take a look here ^^ . May be you are right. I am allowed to review only first posts.
@Videonauth one more here :

as well an indicator if there is a test comming, at least on my end is when the page need long to load :P
