@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Do you know of any worth while books on engine building? I'd like to build my first car engine, SBC 350, possibly turn it into a 383 stroker. If not should I just do the usual Googling around? Also, where would you usually start with an engine that has been sitting for years but not seized?

@DucatiKiller Thanks for the answer. A new spider spring costs 30EUR aftermarket and 60EUR from ducati themselves. Gotta check the inside of the basket, and the disks since the clutch was slipping whilst accelerating after upshifting.
I've got a bad feeling about this.

Q: Shrill tone at peak boost: hose clamp, gasket or blow off valve?

Bob CrossVehicle in question: 2004 Subaru WRX wagon. This weekend, I replaced the intercooler hose (y-shaped upset the intercooler), the throttle body hose and the blowoff valve hose (routes the over boost back to the intake when the throttle closes suddenly). New hoses are silicone, thicker than stock...

@RoryAlsop Great video, thanks for sharing!
@Zaid Most certainly!

12:47 PM
@DucatiKiller Got another clutch question for you:
3
Q: What are the differences between a normal and an anti-hopping/slipper clutch?

JoErNanOObviously an anti-hopping clutch won't make the motorbike hop. How is this achieved? What are the mechanical and functional differences between a normal and an anti-hopping/slipper clutch?

Or for anyone wanting some rep, obviously. :)

@BobCross I can't think of anything different to what @Zaid said. I'm surprised you're getting peak boost though, if you're venting...

That's the whole puzzler: clearly not venting a lot. The tone isn't changing in pitch either. It's not a pretty tone: if I hadn't tightened the blow off valve right down, it would sound like the gasket was buzzing.
I'll pull the blowoff valve at home and replace the gasket, looking for damage or junk but I thought it would be a fun puzzle.
@RoryAlsop, the other possibility is that I'm over boosting and blowing the valve open. That isn't something that I've experienced on this car so it's not a sound that I'm listening for.

1:17 PM
Hmmm - from your description of the sound that seems odd

I know, right? I'd expect a leaking gasket to just ... leak. There should be a rising pitch or change in amplitude. So far, I haven't been able to make the pitch change at all. There might be a slight change in amplitude but I couldn't do a lot of experimenting in traffic. :-p
It is funny working with this stuff. Turbocharged intake paths are as close to steam punk as I'm likely to get on a car. "This pipe blows really hard into this box that blows into this other pipe...."

2:06 PM
waves

Looks, but then acts like he saw something else in the distance

@LynnCrumbling Squints eyes thinking "Who the hell is that? Do I know him?"

@JoErNanO, who are you to judge a question? Joking right?

@JPhi1618 Na man. There are no stupid questions. There are just question which are on-topic or off-topic on SE sites. That's all we can evaluate IMHO.
One might think this is a stupid question:
11
Q: Can I return an Alamo rental car to an Enterprise location?

Darla BethanyI have a car that I rented through Alamo rental but the nearest Alamo location is over an hour from me, not to mention traffic. Can I return the Alamo car to the Enterprise (a parent company of Alamo) location 30 minutes or less from me. I am located in Newark, Texas.

I don't. I think it's a question. Someone has a problem. The answer might be "duh". Regardless someone has this problem or else they wouldn't be asking.
We've all asked "duh" questions at some point in our lives. Heck we didn't know how to use the potty at some point in our lives. :)

1@JoErNanO, yea, but at some point all the can I smuggle X on a plane questions stop being questions.

2:13 PM
@JPhi1618 They are questions. Who am I to say if the guy actually wants to do this? Or if he is a troll? Or an elf? Or a Bazooka collector?
More importantly, do I care?

gimme a few to catch up today... just back into the office after a week in SF

@JoErNanO I like that Alamo question. It does seem dumb to an outsider, but if you've rented from them, it's pretty clear that they are the same company.

@JPhi1618 See? There is more than meets the eye. I'm happy to read that. As a plus, I had no idea. Why don't you answer it? :)
So these tools are gonna cost me a fortune! /cc @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2
Not to mention the clutch.
Been online all morning looking for spares.

2:48 PM
@BobCross I urge you to watch that video

3:00 PM
I did. It's a swell set up. It's also out of scope for my little wee garage.
I don't have a way to produce 14 psi of over pressure with an airtight seal
At this point, I'm doing the obvious things: tightening one clamp at a time. Test run. Repeat.

How much boost can you get from a leaf blower?

My little electric one? Not much.
At this point, it's a thought problem. I now how to recheck all the fittings and gaskets. If there's a possibility that the blowoff valve is doing something strange, I'd think the symptoms have occurred to someone before.

3:22 PM
For anyone that uses a computer at work and needs to type on their phone a lot (for SE, or for texting the wife, etc), I found this keyboard.
I've been using it for a few months now, and it's great. I can answer my wife's questions while leaving my phone on the charging dock, so its quick and a lot less conspicuous than pecking at my phone for a minute.
@Zaid What car is that in the video? I can't tell?

3:44 PM
@JPhi1618 he had a few projects. I believe it's something with a turbocharged Mitsubishi engine

Ah, ok, so an Eclipse or something.

@JPhi1618 you don't get boost. Just moar air

Why did Bob say "It's also out of scope for my little wee garage."... Was he using more than a basic air compressor?

@JPhi1618 even if he was you don't need something fancy for boost leak testing
A simple 50 liter compressor will be more than adequate

@Zaid How do you make sure all the intake valves are shut? Or does that even matter?
I guess even if an intake value was opened, the exhaust valve should be closed...

3:56 PM
Does not matter

4:16 PM
Mornin gents

Yo @DucatiKiller

@JPhi1618 You can switch that keyboard back and forth between devices?

@DucatiKiller, yes, that's the point. You press CTRL+1 to switch back and forth.
It takes about 2 seconds for it to reconnect to my phone, but not a big wait.

That's money. I want one.

I love it. I've been wanting one for a while, but all they had were small keyboards that were made for tablets. This is a full-sized keyboard that happens to have bluetooth.
The only "issue" I have is that there's no way to access the Emoji keyboard on my iPhone when the BT keyboard is active. So my wife has to deal with :) and :( instead of the little pictures.

4:22 PM
and you have an iphone as well, correct?

Yea, I have an iPhone.
It says it works with Android as well.
The Enter key even sends a text on iPhone, so it's very hands-free.

same here. iphone.

I keep my phone on a charging dock since I stream music most of the time, so its very nice.

I like the idea of not pecking at my phone while working. just for the sake of efficiency.

Right. And it's only a sentence or two to the wife every so often, but each text is an opportunity for someone to see you "playing" with you phone.
The other problem is trying to click on the text message box with my computer mouse. I get device confusion. :P
(use the mouse on my phone... it sits under my monitor so it just looks like another monitor)

4:26 PM
any way to interact with all of the 'things' a little easier/simpler....I'm all in.
It makes it less of a distraction and more of an interaction.

@JPhi1618 nice keyboard but no Bluetooth at work! Back to peck peck peck on phone. ;-)

@JoErNanO I'll answer your question in a bit.
@BobCross Security re:bluetooth?

@Zaid no compressor at my house. Not going to be one anyway. Out of scope: budget will only take so much and I have almost no use for a compressor.
@DucatiKiller yep
I'm also asking the question from the point of someone who's just starting out. Imagine it's not me asking. Someone just started wrenching and now they hear this odd sound but only sometimes.

makes sense. it's a good practice imo

I see boost leak questions all over the Internet. I strongly suspect I have a gasket problem but I didn't want to bury the lede.

4:43 PM
@BobCross Sometimes when tightening hoseclamps the hose will get bound and it's not perceivable. It binds where the screw is pulling the clamp and you get a little tiny wave between the hose and what it is joining to.
I've had it happen to me dozens of times with rubber intake manifolds for motorcycles.
more than dozens of times actually.

@DucatiKiller see that's something I didn't think of

Use saliva during assembly so it goes away when complete
or water
but honestly, I use saliva more

I went with water. These hoses are already tight on the fittings.
Not air tight. Just a pain to wiggle on.

The issue of the hose binding up, just a bit, has plagued me....always.

@DucatiKiller what's up amigo

4:47 PM
Just a part of reassembly for an MC with lots of carbs...but a frequent issue.
@Zaid What's up compadre

Congrats on hitting 20k !
4

You should add some protein to that diet. That'll help the bike feel much better.
I should tune the question a smudge to increase it's Googlosity.

Agreed. I want to keep in ketostasis and just feed it coconut butter but....it's always around the donuts. I can't deny the donuts.

:29394385 agreed. Follow @LynnCrumbling 's lead and add some, er, popular keywords

It just wouldn't be fair.
@Zaid Thanks! It's a number!

4:53 PM
@BobCross add "Donald Trump" to the question title ;)

🙄

@BobCross Have you tried the soapy water trick with one of the minion (kids) working the pedal to see if you can blow bubbles?

@DucatiKiller doesn't work: the waste gate won't let you come close to full boost without a load. I'm not going to strap a kid to the hood while I'm driving down the road, either, of that was your next question!

@Zaid Donald Trump = Spam Magnet :-)
@BobCross Your responsibility as a parent hinders you.....

I'm remind them both that neither one is my spare kid.

4:56 PM
safety, information gathering, abuse.......it's all so subjective
@BobCross There's a resource for information regarding parenting that I watch. It's called Game of Thrones, the oldest male child seems to be the most valuable.

Another 🙄
I already have enough access to media that makes me stressed out and depressed.

@BobCross Are you referring to the positive pressure test in @Zaid 's video?

Actually yes. Gosh it sure would be nice to have access to every tool I need. Too bad I have these tuitions and the kids that go with them.

wouldn't it be nice to have a dyno at the house? You could load the engine up all you wanted without moving an inch.

5:11 PM
Well that plus a fully gimbaled camera setup. That way I could put everything right up close so I can hear and see the site.

@Zaid <grin>

I also want a pony. That shoots lasers. Pew pew!

I've felt the same way about a unicorn that shoots rainbows out it's butt.

Now you're just being vulgar. Those rainbows would be all ookie.

Everything has gravity - here's a droplet of water orbiting a needle in 0G. https://t.co/lPQvHr1IYw

5:21 PM
@DucatiKiller That's what she said.
@DucatiKiller There is a Skeptics.SE HNQ on that.

@JPhi1618 old or new?

Today. New.

Q: Does this video show a water droplet in orbit?

OddthinkingAndrew Rader, an author and engineeer, tweeted a GIF video showing a droplet of water rotating around some sort of probe. Everything has gravity - here's a droplet of water orbiting a needle in 0G. No source is provided. The scale is unclear. The result is counter-intuitive, and I am skepti...

It's static electricity, not gravity.

Way to jump on it.
seems it's electrostatic.....

Also, found this awesome pic in a discussion on it...
Mind blown on that one...

pic not coming up........

5:29 PM
Lame.
Now?

Ok, saved and uploaded it. Felt it was worth it.

saw that in the tweet an image below the orbiting droplet
That's good

@JPhi1618 that sounds like a feature! No emojis? Sign me up! :-)

I thought it was the coriander effect when I first saw it.

5:31 PM
@DucatiKiller hahahahaha

@DucatiKiller I missed that...

It's how a fluid or a gas 'attaches' it'self to a curved surface and follows it.
errr....spelling....which why @RoryAlsop found the humor....now it's at me...lol

Oh, is coriander the right word? Like the herb?
Ha, ok.

@JPhi1618 OK, I've un-f'ing it with this.
The Coandă effect (/ˈkwɑːndə/ or /ˈkwæ-/) is the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface. The principle was named after Romanian aerodynamics pioneer Henri Coandă, who was the first to recognize the practical application of the phenomenon in aircraft development. == Discovery == An early description of this phenomenon was provided by Thomas Young in a lecture given to The Royal Society in 1800: The lateral pressure which urges the flame of a candle towards the stream of air from a blowpipe is probably exactly similar to that pressure which eases the inflection of a current...

Ok, you get a pass because there's no way I would be able to spell that either.

The happy mouth above the last A doesn't register in my brain.

@JPhi1618 It's a bye week for me. I'm not really in the game.

I like the way more water sucks in the spoon closer.
I also use this effect with those air-jet hand dryers.

The back of F1 cars use this to get the air down on the rear diffusers below the rear wing

If you hold the meaty part of your hands together (the base of your thumb) under the jet of air, it makes a farty noise.

5:41 PM
for a bit more downforce

Great fun...

I think that's the description of bob's issue with his turbo
it's just a super high pitched farty noise

Ha, right.
What a tight-ass.

.....full circle.....

5:43 PM
In harmony,"The circle of life!"

Hard to believe that movie is 22 years old.

I think I've seen it a hundred times. My son was 6 when it came out. He wanted to watch it ALL THE TIME.
It is hard to believe. Lot's of nostalgia in there for me.

Ha, Frozen will be that movie for me.
Our 4yo likes it, but our 2yo wants to see it EVERY DAY...
She is obsessed.

ahhhh...short people obsession.

This is pretty weird...

5:48 PM
Yes, let's watch it again. If we sit in different chairs maybe the perspective will make it will seem like a different movie....

That's great!
LMAO....good idea on the garbage can

Yea, that dude is intense...

and probably very well paid.

So, I bought that LEGO Le Mans car, and my 4yo helped me separate all the parts out by color.
Then when I started to build it, saying thanks, but there wasn't really a way for her to help any more, she lost it.
It was sad.

5:50 PM
5 years from now it will be cute

I've bought a few smaller things and we built them together.
For right now, I'm going to have to work on it after she goes to bed, lol.
It is pretty cool. It has a little LEGO differential/rear end.

....and getting lego's out so she can work on her own project doesn't work cuz she just wants to work on yours with you....

It mates up to a "working" V-8 engine.

A lego rear diff? sweet!
electric motor for the V-8?

5:54 PM
that's gotta be a 10% power loss through that thing, easy.

@DucatiKiller you're actually pretty close. Now, how do you fix it, Mr Smart Guy?

No, thats the really lame part... You can get the "power functions" motor kit, but the instructions have it hooking up to the doors and the rear hatch to motorize them.

@BobCross turn the motor 90 degrees and take the diff out.

There are videos online of people that have a motor hooked up to the steering and wheels tho.

@DucatiKiller I rate your comments as unhelpful.

5:55 PM
@BobCross you gotta problem, I gotta solution....next
LOL
@BobCross The mod in this place mocks me. You need to do something about it.

It's not mockery, sir.

ouch....
@BobCross The mod in this place punishes me. You need to do something about it.

Disdain is a feeling of contempt or scorn. Disdain may also refer to: USS Disdain (AM-222) HMS Disdain (I05) So Disdained 1928 novel by Nevil Shute Disdain (EP), an EP by Alien Huang "Disdain", a song by Knuckle Puck from their 2015 album Copacetic "Disdain", by Unsane from Visqueen, 2007...

omg...the pain...LMAO
So confused....the book?.....the boat?....the verb?
so unclear....

Multiple boats no less

5:59 PM
and you call yourself a Dr? Puhleeeease!
@JPhi1618 Do they turn them into remote controlled lego's?

Doctor, as a title, originates from the Latin word of the same spelling and meaning. The word is originally an agentive noun of the Latin verb docēre [dɔˈkeːrɛ] 'to teach'. It has been used as an honored academic title for over a millennium in Europe, where it dates back to the rise of the first universities, originally University of Paris. This use spread to the Americas, through its former European colonies, and is now prevalent in most of the world. Contracted "Dr" or "Dr.", it is used as a designation for a person who has obtained a Research Doctorate (i.e. Ph.D., D.P.H., etc.), or clinical...

with the steering and what not?

I laid some knowledge on you. Ergo, teaching. QED.

You make me better

@DucatiKiller Yea, there is an IR remote set, so you can do remote steering and other motors.

6:05 PM
I'm getting the impression that there is whole 'hack the lego' movement out there

(I didn't listen to the sound)
The motor power looks pretty slow tho.
There might be a way to gear it up with two of the extra-large motors, but I'm not sure.
You're looking at least another $100 for the motors and controller tho.

have you ever gone that far regarding a motor and some controllers?

I had a set with a wired motor when I was a kid.
That was fun.
I haven't had a lot of the Technic stuff tho as an adult.
I have a ton of Star Wars legos as collectors pieces.

that's pretty cool.
I wish I had some of my old star wars stuff

I think I'm going to have to snag 2-3 of the new Porsche GT3 when it comes out as an investment.

6:10 PM
The GT3 is kicken ass too
the new GT3

It should double in price after it retires.
And if it doesn't it won't loose value.

Interesting....I had no idea about lego collector value

Oh, yea. The huge Millenium Falcon... It was $499 MSRP when new. Now, a new in box, well kept one can get $2500 on ebay.

That's insane!

I sold a NIB Death Star for $600, MSRP $299...

6:14 PM
I have some NIB Beetles figures from the Yellow Submarine movie
That's about the only collectibles I have....other than Yamaha RD and RZ OEM parts.

Ha, nice.

6:37 PM
I like this question...
1
Q: How to remove the 50 amp, 80 amp and 100 amp fuses from the positive terminal of a RAV4?

user568458I want to check the fuses at the positive battery connection of my 1998 (first generation) Toyota RAV4. Visually, the 80a and 100a look fine, but the 50a has blue deposits and I can't tell if it's broken or not. No power is reaching my engine controller, and I've checked every other fuse and the ...

It's one of those things that you might not find in a repair manual or even a shop manual because of how "simple" it is.
Maybe they just pull right out, but I'd be afraid to damage them as well.

I see what your getting at. Agreed, it's a good question.

And a picture without being asked. Bonus...

Pretend I said something mean about the your/you're dichotomy here.

@BobCross I always do......the more inadequate I feel the more I come back for validation so your tactics keep me coming back all the time...hoping, striving, yearning for acceptance and love. :-)
I want to answer this question with more than, "on deceleration over a certain RPM it will bleed off power" but can't find a good diagram to reduce the potential wall of words...
3
Q: What are the differences between a normal and an anti-hopping/slipper clutch?

JoErNanOObviously an anti-hopping clutch won't make the motorbike hop. How is this achieved? What are the mechanical and functional differences between a normal and an anti-hopping/slipper clutch?

I have no idea what that is even talking about.
Is it like a car clutch that has damping springs on it?

6:51 PM
It's an MC clutch that prevents you from taking the engine over a set RPM...like redline. You can be at 12K RPM in 5th gear and just start mashing it down to 2nd without blowing up your motor.

Does it just slip so the RPMs don't go crazy?

So it is sort of one-way? it lets the engine drive the wheels, but not the wheels drive the engine?
Do you not have engine braking with that?
Or is that what the RPM part is for?

yes, you have really good engine braking
and you can set ramps to have various ramp degrees to bleed off energy at certain rpms'
if you can listen to the sound of this.

Sounds complicated.

6:55 PM
it's actually not too complicated. Uses a ball and ramp in some designs.
just an inclined plane

Is it a racing-only thing or do some production bikes have it?

More and more high performance bikes are coming with them due to homologation and the desire for teams that run stock bikes in lower classes to have them.
so manufacturers are including them in some stock bikes
Like Aprilia RSV4 and Ducati Panagale
@JPhi1618 were you able to listen to the engine rpm's on that video when he downshifted?

7:09 PM
@DucatiKiller The sounds quality was pretty terrible, but I think I can hear what's going on.

he jams it down a few gears and rpm's don't soar. For a moment they seem steady BUT he's slowing down....

Yea, ok.

Somebody ping me if this user swings by here

@Zaid sure, I'll keep an eye out

@DucatiKiller thanks

7:21 PM
@Zaid what's up?

Just wanted some more details on this RAV4 problem

gotcha

7:34 PM
@DucatiKiller don't be hating on the wall of words. All my riches are a consequence of my vocabulary: it's both big and good!

@BobCross I guess I feel like I have too many wall of words answers....

It's so fun working in an industry where some people fall back on the lines of code written as a metric of progress. So far today, I've written 32 net lines of code ... but they were all genius!
@DucatiKiller well, you don't want to be a big copycat. That would dilute my brand!

Ugh. Now people are speaking outside my cube with their meat mouths! It's slowing down my typing speed!
UK Freeform Hardcore in the headphones all day doesn't make you especially tolerant of slow talkers....

Q: Does increasing head gasket thickness make it more failure-prone?

ZaidA well-known fact when adding forced-induction to an engine originally designed for naturally-aspirated applications, is that it may be necessary to reduce the compression ratio to counter the increased risk of pre-ignition/detonation. A cost-effective way to do this is to use a thicker head gas...

Guys, remember this question?
Well, in the video I just linked above, Tony says that the stock LS9 head gasket is a 5-layer deal

7:44 PM
@Zaid They have those on most suzuki's....multilayer head gaskets

So doesn't that mean that a thicker head gasket is not a recipe for head gasket failure?

@Zaid I suppose it depends on your definition of thicker
crap pic, but if you blow it up you can see the layers

I defined thicker to mean less CR

AFIK if you add one layer you can decrease CR significantly.
which would seem to align with 'less pressure'

Yes, no debate there
I'm just puzzled by the answer to that question now
It doesn't seem to send the right message IMO

7:49 PM
under that premise I'm curious how much unreliability your would insert into the design. As well, you would need to retime your cams a bit if they were overhead.
@Zaid That answer has puzzled me since it was posted.
....it feels like a research time hole to disprove it.

0
A: Does increasing head gasket thickness make it more failure-prone?

ZaidIt turns out that multi-layer head gaskets can be OEM as well. In this Hot Rod Garage video the presenter makes mention of the LS9 head gasket, which consists of 5 layers. This would seem to indicate that it is possible to have a reliable multi-layer head gasket, so thicker doesn't necessarily ...

I've posted an answer just to present the other side of the story

it works
Plus One
at least at inserting uncertainty.

Harrumph. All this typing that doesn't move me closer to fixing my turbo squeak. Grump.

@BobCross No amount of typing is going to fix that

@BobCross I'm stuck on the clamps binding the hose a bit where it meets the outer diameter of the component you are placing it on. The hose flaps at a very high frequency due to the leak thereby increasing the sound level to higher volume
@BobCross The binding isn't necessarily visible.
That's my theory

7:54 PM
@Zaid -1 for failing to show a properly sympathetic attitude towards the annoying sound that I'm dealing with.

LMAO

@DucatiKiller it's a good theory.
The other obvious one is gasket. That's also an easy one to just replace.
I'm tightening one clamp at a time to see if there's a difference. This will take a while since, you know, job.

@BobCross You could use a very thin petroleum product on the OD where the hose meets to prevent the binding from occurring...

@BobCross don't make me concoct a solution that will fix your squeak via typing

@Zaid color me intrigued!
@DucatiKiller I suspect that just water spray per hose and clamp will go a long way. I'll be looking into that if I have to disassemble every thing.

7:57 PM
....with just a tad of soap in the water.... :-)
....my primary lubricant in such situations is always saliva first though....

ick. Your vehicles are all drooly
"What's been driving this thing? A Great Dane?!"

yes, but they don't have unmetered positive or negative pressure leaks...
:-)

My positive pressure leak is plenty metered. I have a meter right there!
It's saying "yep, there's boost!"

just don't take your negative pressure leaks out on me though....I'm sensitive

Sigh. Suck. Blow. There, did that get it out of your system? 🙄
