"should be fired. Out of a cannon. Into the sun." The only job you can literally get Hired and Fired in the same day!

Hired to recommend, fired for recommending
It's good article, you'll piss yourself if you read the whole thing

Yeah, its the only gas engine that uses oil by design

Don't you leave out my 2-strokes there. There are just as crappy and I love them.
With all of their spew and planet hate

I should say oil from the crankcase....Yeah I love the old Kawi triples, freaking beasts.

I've had the pleasure of working on a few of those. Huge fan of the TZ/RD/RZ Yamaha line up. My buddy sent me this today. Nice build.

1:33 AM
Yeah my brother had a stock RD350 back in the day, ran like a scalded dog.

Had one myself. Worst decision selling it.

Video was nice, I liked the 16K tach.

I like to see the components. Not a fan of wrapped in plastic.
yeah, the 16K tach says something. Like it too

Yup, let it all hang out..

time to bail. night time IT work beckons. Take care man!

1:52 AM
later dude.

5 hours later…
6:33 AM
This early 90s laptop is the only PC fit to fix the McLaren F1

http://flip.it/LBByK

4 hours later…
10:54 AM
We have a question "How fast is one RPM"
would it be overly sarcastic to reply "one rpm"
?

11:34 AM
It's a duplicate. It's the same question as how many mph per rpm. We've had that question several times.
Sorry, misread. It's a division problem. Gee. That's sad.

2 hours later…
1:56 PM
@DucatiKiller, you will think I'm crazy, but this can be in the HNQ... mechanics.stackexchange.com/q/29258/12030

2:07 PM
Well, except now it has an accepted answer... Wah wah...

Long exasperated sigh

@BobCross, @me or @work? :P

2:49 PM
@cdunn, not sure why sponge bob thinks the LED tail light question has different answers than the LED turn signals... And thanks for the edit.

@JPhi1618 I thought it had made it in there
@Zaid That's terrible. -1 for McLaren

Well, maybe, but I put it to bed with my answer.
@DucatiKiller, I hope I didn't mess up anything on that mc shifting question.
I figured it would provide another answer per question if nothing else.

No, you didn't. You gave THE answer. +1'd

I think once he tries it he'll see how easy it is.

It does fulfill the dream of a 1:1 ratio
yeah, he's just fearful because he hasn't done it yet

3:02 PM
That 24hr lego car is cool. It'd be great for anyone interested in cars that didn't know much about cars.
The working suspension, steering, differential and V8 are all very realistic.
I feel the need to put motors in it tho. AWD would be sweet, but not sure if I can make that happen.

AWD would be awesome. Does it have a drive shaft to the rear wheels?
never mind, it has a diff so, I would assume yes

It has a shaft going from the rear diff to the B8.
V8... I think removing the fake motor would leave room for the electric one.
The front suspension would have to be rebuild because the spring shock lives where the front drive shafts would need to go to the wheels.
I think it's doable. Just a matter of parts.

and little tiny half shafts
I guess a front diff too?

It even has a cool gear-engaging part that could be used to make a transmission.
No front diff. I would have to get one.
I could follow the model for the rear of the car on the front and add steering.

I had no idea how next level lego's have become

3:09 PM
I think front and rear diff would be enough. I don't think I would need any kind of active transfer case.

The steering AND the power delivery seems complicated with tiny parts

The whole steering servo can be forward of the front axle, so that makes less overlap and reduces complexity. The seering and drive power don't need to come from the same side.

makes sense.

It will need some gearing to bring the engine up to speed. If it's motorized, I want it to be fast.
Ain't got no time for slow.

and who needs brakes? I hear they only slow you down.
So, 1 motor, 2 diffs, couple of half shafts and reworked front suspension?
Did you see Zaid's linke?

3:18 PM
@DucatiKiller, I saw a video online of someone that made a LEGO car with pnuematic "brakes". It was a little rubber piece that squeezed a disk.
It was just because they could do it. It's not like it needed brakes.
@DucatiKiller Yea, saw that. That's crazy.

thats pretty ingenious. I don't imagine that any of them need anything but it's interesting, this little world you've introduced me too.

We had a golden laptop at my last job that had to be used to diagnose some certain hardware.

That 'application' to work on the McLaren. I would imagine they could have done it a million different ways.

It was the only one with the right serial interface and the special software installed.
No one knew where the software was other than installed on that old laptop P

There used to be all manner of stupid 20 years ago regarding accessing various hardware. Like you said. The fancy serial cable or it has to be null or....some other bs
It's infuriating to hear things like that.

3:21 PM
Ha, at least this guy tried... Read the question title, and the first line of his answer.
0
A: What is the name of a coupling nut with a cutout?

SebastianAccording to Wikipedia what you are looking for is called a coupling nut or extension nut: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupling_nut

There was a digiboard that required their special cable.
lol
How did you find the name of the actual nut? Natural language search in the form of a question?

Yea, I searched for a few similar terms to his question using an image search.
Image search is where the next-level googling happens.
I've at least used that part before so I knew what to search for. So I guess that helped.

I find a lot of answers through image search
I read an NSA pdf that got into the wild about 5 years ago. It had a hundred pages using google to search. I went next level. Then about 2 years ago i read an article on natural language searching so I started experimenting and asking questions as if it were human and some of the search returns were pretty amazing.

That sounds interesting.

I'll find that pdf. It's everywhere now of course.
it's about 600 pages. Some of it certainly outdated but it's very interesting. All the basis for doxing
here's a good article on the history of it.

3:35 PM
Cool, thanks.

well, three years ago.

Oh - I'm a proud papa... My 4yo put together her first LEGO set on her own with very little help. I just had to help with some tight pieces that would be hard for anyone to snap together.

Nice, that's great brain activity for youngins
congrats!

Figuring out how to insert a single piece in a maze of pieces to form a larger object is pretty interesting stuff.

3:37 PM
We've done some stuff together, so I got her one of the smallest sets to try on her own.

at some point you might want to snag that thing when she loses interest. Bag it and store for future nostalgia.

Also, the girl legos for kids are terrible from a building perspective.
I took a picture for the memories.

Those kind of things become soooo valuable later on down the road.
I have a few moments, things I didn't store with my son and I occaisionally kick myself because of it.

So the problem I have with that, is its just too free form.
When you build the "Store" or the other stand, it's easy to make mistakes and not know because it still basically looks right.
The cars and other structured objects are much better. Mistakes are a problem so you know you did it wrong.

you have to be able to identify failure to remediate it. I can see how this one could go wrong.

3:47 PM
And the piece placement is arbitrary. It's done to be decorative rather than serve a purpose, so in my mind at least, it makes it hard to get the piece placement right.
Yo @Zaid. You gonna drop some BMW ABS knowledge?

Hey guys
@JPhi1618 on what?

0
Q: ABS light on 528i BMW

user17103I'm not sure if this is true but I've heard that in order to fix my ABS light, they have to remove the module and send it out to reprogram. Is this true?

@DucatiKiller it's not really their fault. They were on the bleeding edge of technology

The fact that it's that way is a bit infuriating to me. It's like hardcoding the IP address of the SQL server into the web app to me.

Why would the IP of your server change?
I mean, it's your server?

3:53 PM
If you have infrastructure and need to migrate, it becomes a problem. Let's say you use a class C private range and all your servers are 192.168.x.x....and you want to become a big boy and use a class a private range. What now? Find and replace in the code?

Man, didn't expect you to bite on that.

Usa a FQHN and you wont have to do that.
@JPhi1618 LOL....you sucked me in bro
I fell for it...lol

Passion will do that.
Life blood of the trolls.

it's true. I get a little nutty.
Indeed. I have a friend that trolls me about once every 3 - 6 weeks. He waits and waits and when he strikes, he's good.

@JPhi1618 you're pretty much spot on. It doesn't have to be rebuilt or reprogrammed
It might. But there are a host of other reasons why the light would turn on

3:57 PM
I don't envy anyone troubleshooting high end ABS issues.

@Zaid, Yea, I just didn't know if only the dealer had the software to read the ABS module.
That's what I wasn't sure of in regards to BMW...

BMW....Bring More Wallets

Ha, reminds me of BOAT: Break Out Another Thousand.

Bust out......you say tomato...

Hmm, I like Bust Out.
I will adopt that and raise it as if it were my own.

4:04 PM
The original G

@JPhi1618 yes. It's called GT1 or DIS

@Zaid What is called that?

Looks like GM will have some competition from Ford at Le Mans

But many enthusiasts have figured out how to get it to run on a virtual machine on their lappies

4:05 PM
A special cable or special software?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 The GT40 did good at Laguna Seca. The Vettes are on the bubble now.

@JPhi1618 special both

Hello all :)

@cdunn that rotary article was hilarious.

@cdunn what's up Charlie?

4:07 PM
Wrap your ass in fiberglass, drive a Vette.

@Zaid Hey Z, not a whole lot. just grabbing lunch in my office...

Oh yea... @Moab, where are you from?

MArs

@DucatiKiller It was a great article. He all but gushed about that last car..

;-)

4:07 PM
ha

North of Dallas TX

Nice, I'm in Dallas.
Work at 121 and DNT.

I avoid Dallas now, to many idiots on the roads.

I/m just a bit northeast of Dallas.. About 2200 miles-ish... :)

@cdunn, Oh, you...

4:08 PM
Sounds like every road there is up here.. lol
@JPhi1618 You know I had to.. lol

@JPhi1618 Oh your down in the middle of it

Don't a get at least 1/2 point for actually liking GMG? lol

@Moab, I live east of Dallas in Rowlett/Lake Ray Hubbard area.
@cdunn, that's a full +1.

I'm looking forward to the new season. Haven't seen them running reruns yet so must not be close...

@JPhi1618 Its uncontrolled growth everywhere, time for me to move.

4:12 PM
I have a friend in Houston who keeps telling me I need to come down.. Escape the great liberal NorthEast...
But I keep thinking AZ is a better bet.. Most gun friendly state in the union

@cdunn, looks like it premiers on 5/9

which surprised the heck out of me btw. I would have figuers that would be Texas

@cdunn, Texas has open carry. How much more friendly do you want?

@JPhi1618 Or I could be totally wrong and it's in 6 days lmao
Oh, there are lots of things. NH has open carry too.. Hell so does the Peoples Republic of Mass.. But good luck going 10 feet there.

Houston, where the mayor tried to let male transgenders into public restrooms with your daughters and wives. Such great progressive thinking.

4:15 PM
Wait... No... It's not on 5/9/ Discovery website is terrible.

It was a survey done by I think Guns and Ammo magazine. Was based on laws, fees etc..
well yes it is... lol

I should be back in June tho.

@JPhi1618 You have to remember that my mission is to own at least 4 or 5 fully auto historical guns.. Not least amongst them the German MG-42.. Nice rate of fire... Very complicated...

Kennesaw Georgia has a town law that you must own a gun and ammo.

It's the Az fees and concealed carry laws here that make it so ........liberal

4:17 PM
I need to plan a LEGO gun.
Kids toy turned into a gun would be viral for sure.

Come to Az, we'll hug you while you build it and have a couple of newscrews filiming it because, it's news here.

IS there anything smaller than a .22?

@DucatiKiller that surprises me actually. I'm having with the police chief here who can't read the law. Keeps telling my 19 yo son he can't have a license to carry because he can't "posses" a hand gun. Law says posses, not buy. he can posses one.
Yes, .17 HMR

Other than a BB...

Guys, the gun talk makes some of our friends extremely uncomfortable.

4:19 PM
Ok, Bob, not trying to make anyone uncomfortable.. Sorry about that

Well at least not uncomfortable in that particular way...

Thanks.

Q: Motorcycle dumping gas from tailpipe

JordanI'm in the process of getting my 1982 Honda Magna back in running condition. I've cleaned out the carb and put in a new battery. It now runs, but dumps a TON of gas out the tailpipe. Almost a constant stream. I'm suspicious that it would mean one or more cylinders not firing. It seems to be too m...

@DucatiKiller, yea, I saw that he was not responding to you.

4:20 PM
everything is just a bit off on the OP's belief systems

For the record, it was on the rifle team in high school. I've been told that the subject really bothers some people that come here. I'd rather have more people and talk about that sort of thing elsewhere.

gas is pouring out of the tailpipe?

I was wondering about that.. How does he know it's gas? and how on earth did it make it out of a hot exhaust as a liquid?

@BobCross I've heard that too on two separate occasions

Unless it's a stream that's on fire...

4:21 PM
I think it might be coolant
if it's coming out that fast. The carbs just can't feed it that much gas IMO

You would think the smell would be radically different. Unless he has gas coming from somewhere else that gives the smell..
But then there's color...

Well, to be fair, this is the picture he didn't post:

LOL
There is a flame kit question on here

Seriously? lol

1
Q: Exhaust Flame Kit

Billy MathewsI have been searching over the past week or so trying to educate myself as much as possible before going ahead and trying to build an exhaust flame kit from scratch (the ones on sale on the internet are ridiculously overpriced for essentially and some assorted electronics). I have a Honda CBR (m...

yes, seriously....

4:23 PM
"How can I light my own feet on fire?"

I'd love an afterburner on a motorcycle.
Or my car.
That's better than a brake check for tailgaters.

I'd love to have the turbojet engine to put the afterburner on.. lol

Here, this is close to what you're after.

Flamethrower kits are useful for toasting tailgaters
Aside from that, not much really

@Zaid I loved when I could do it at will with my RX-7.... lol
Wasn't exactly great for the muffler lmao

4:26 PM
Lol, how come?

Never saw people back off so fast in my life..

Late... image link was broken.

You should use the rubber cement balls flicked out the window more often. Nothing backs off a tailgater like lots and lots of boogers.

Well, I removed the burn chamber and replaced it with straight pipe. So it was passing unburnt hydrocarbons right to the muffler. which would then basically explode and the resulting flame front came running out the back of the tailpipe...

@BobCross, that's awesome.

4:27 PM
@BobCross I give you the train horn

Thanks, I don't claim authorship but I can't find the original source.

But the 3 foot helix of flame that came out got people to back off quick

^ I don't agree with their use of the horn to shock innocent bystanders
But the results are pretty dramatic. Will work on tailgaters

I agree, scaring people isn't right. But so need one for that guy who's being a jerk...

This isn't the video I had in mind...

4:33 PM
Maybe a switch n the dash.. regular, and MOVE NOW horns... :)
Would be the most expensive thing in my car. Installing it wil probably double it's value.. lol
@Zaid ~vaguly waves right hand in the air~ These are not the videos your looking for..
Sorry, had to..
Time to make donuts, more later, have fun all!

later @cdunn
@cdunn I mean stewart

@cdunn no sir. Next time I'll try to post something more constructive

4:58 PM
Sees announcement about Amazon Prime Now. "Go to the website to check your zip code!" Goes to website and starts to type. Website immediately starts laughing raucously. "Haw haw haw! You hold your breath and we'll let you know when we'll be delivering to your area!"
I mean seriously, who needs this service more than us? "Siri, tell Amazon I need another @$(&&! hose clamp!"

Love Amazon Prime. Are you in a rural area without Prime delivery service?

No, I live in New England and prime is great. The idea of two hour prime now so I can keep working without having to clean up my filthy self just sounds so appealing.
You know, when that critical piece goes sproing?

5:19 PM
@BobCross, I am in the Prime Now range at work.
It's odd because its a whole separate app to do the ordering and paying.
It's a limited selection for sure, but they do have a lot of stuff. You'

I have an Amazon warehouse about 15 miles away so there's a lot of things I can pretty much get right now unless it's some fancy hunting knife with flamethrower on it.

You're expected to tip the driver like $5.
The items are delivered in a paper bag rather than a box.
Because of the paper bag, there was some confusion on the first delivery when I was told there was an Amazon guy with my lunch at the door.

5:39 PM
That's good
Because I like lunch
@JPhi1618 After re-reading this question it kind of feels like a driving technique query.

Q: Shifting on a motorbike by preloading

Mr. MeeseeksI have a few different questions that popped into my head after reading about preloading the shifter in motorbikes, here's one of three: Shifting between 1st and 2nd on a motorbike - will the bike auto-shift into neutral because of preloading and that being in neutral doesn't require any kind of...

wadya think?

@DucatiKiller, I agree to an extent, but I'm not sure where the off-topic line is on that. I forgot it was off topic at all until you mentioned it.
We're the heel-toe questions closed as OT?

@JPhi1618 Good question
This one is not closed
1
A: Is my gas pedal long enough to enable heel-and-toe shifting?

rpmerfTypically the gas pedal is wider on manual cars to make heal toe easier. Heal toe shifting is not really be best name. You use the ball of your foot under your big toe on the edge of the brake pedal and the edge of your foot near your pinky on the gas. Remember, when you do this your brake pe...

there was another one too

Q: What mechanical action is heel and toe (clutchless) shifting trying to accomplish?

Lynn CrumblingI just ran across the phrase "heel and toe" shifting from this answer I've worn through the floor mat in two places trying to become better at heel and toe-ing, though. and this question: I've heard much and recently watched a video about performing the heel-and-toe technique. I ...

@JPhi1618 I guess it's good. This isn't the droid I'm looking for.

I guess I would need to see an example of a obviously closed "driving technique" question.

5:54 PM
Agreed, me too.

We have had some that were using the phrase "street racing" or close to it. They got the slam.
The tipping puts a damper on the Amazon now thing. A five dollar tip for a two dollar hose clamp (a really nice one)?
It would be different if he delivered a compressor so I could blow up big balloons that say "Zaid, stop making fun of me!"
2
@DucatiKiller, I'm probably going to take the intercooler hoses apart and re-do. I think I know what's going on. That should make for some nice pictures, too.

@BobCross, yea, the tipping is a little of a bummer, but normally to upgrade shipping for an item to 1-day its like $3.99 right? With Prime now, theres no delivery fee, just the tip, so it evens out in my head.

6:10 PM
@BobCross I'm going to post our discussion as an answer later today. Interested in seeing what you come up with.

Yes do that
I was going to say and now I don't have to!

Food. Amazon Prime, bring me my lunch. I like bacon on my sandwiches. Thanks.
back later gents

6:32 PM
@BobCross What bemuses me is that I'm supposed to be living in the Third World :)

I thought Amazon delivery at least got you into second world status.

7:22 PM
@Zaid ugh. So embarrassing.

Is this true for an automatic? I hear people say this, but I've never thought it was correct...

A: Preventive maintenance for a long-distance tow

mikeAuto or manual it is allways wise when towing a heavy load (particularly when going uphill) to engage a lower gear

I don't see it as a question, so going to ask.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 did you know this channel existed?

8:30 PM
Man, slow afternoon in here.

8:41 PM
@Zaid - Actually, I just watched all of the episodes which were up over the weekend. I think there was three then.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, yo.

Slow chat day. How are you doing?

I'm good.
Not very chatty either, but oh well.
Hey @JonEricson - Good to see you.

Maybe its the internet telling me I have a lot of work to do.

8:51 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Howdy. Been awhile since I popped in, I guess.

@JPhi1618 I don't think the internet does that ... more like it's a squirrel waiting to happen.
@JonEricson - Well, good to see you nonetheless.

Heh. You too. ;-)

How's life in CA?

Warming up. I'm on my deck getting ready for a meeting.

Nice
It just started raining ... let's say in the "Noah's Arc" proportion.

8:56 PM
A little rain would be nice. But that sounds a bit too much.

Yah. It's been raining out here quite regularly. The ground is fairly saturated, but it still wants to rain more. Too bad we couldn't give some on loan to CA for yah, lol.

Maybe they could make a big water pipeline.
Like oil but cleaner.

Oh, I've wondered about doing that ... could be the next "Interstate" project for the US.

It wouldn't be the first big national water pipeline project. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_aqueduct

Yah, but a lot of that still works.
We'd build it here and it would last about 20 years.
The Romans constructed numerous aqueducts in order to bring water from distant sources into cities and towns, supplying public baths, latrines, fountains and private households. Waste was removed by complex sewage systems and released into nearby bodies of water, keeping the towns clean and free from effluent. Aqueducts also provided water for mining operations, milling, farms and gardens. Aqueducts moved water through gravity alone, being constructed along a slight downward gradient within conduits of stone, brick or concrete. Most were buried beneath the ground, and followed its contours;...

1 hour later…
10:25 PM
Hey @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 :)
How are you doing?

10:37 PM
@cdunn - I'm okay. Power went out while I was watching Roadkill.

Oh! That's not good...

Definitely not, lol!
Back on now :o)

Is "Mullet" the name of a guy, or his truck? lol
lmao I thought it might possibly be on now... lol

It's the type of haircut of the guy who would drive either the Camaro or Mustang.

True.. being an 80's kind of guy I remember them well... never had one, but they were really popular.. lol
I just didn't get the connection from hair style to crushing cars...

10:40 PM
How old are you?

56 :)

Okay, you got me by 5 :o)

which means I am going to celebrate my 39th birthday for the 18th time this year... :)
3

Now you're talkin!

I figure that aging thing has way to many downsides.. I'm gonna take a pass on it..
btw, Just saw this:

10:43 PM
I keep telling people ... getting old sucks ... don't do it!

I tell my kids that all the time..
the car is suspended above it by magnetic levetation
I really need to look into that more.. I would have thought the power required to do that would make the process impractical..
Unless they use rare earth magnets somehow..

I'll watch it as soon as I get through with Roadkill ... we must have priorities after all.

Good point lol Man's gotta know what's important lol

Like spending an entire Saturday working on brakes.. There were moments where the name PowerStop was a curse in my house, but I still loved every minute of it.
And when it worked, bliss.. and a lot of sore muscles.. lol

10:46 PM
Haha

Rest of the world prety much got told to go away for the day. Just tunes (80's channel of course) the car, and my tools...
I so need a project car.. lol
I was thinking a 1997 Toyota Celica.. Parts are still available, and it's dirt cheap. Wrench on it, get some more power into it.. Have some fun with it

I've got one in the driveway and one down in NC (as soon as I go and get it). Both are 3rd gen Camaros

Work up to my dream project. 1979 rx-7...
Nice! Sounds like some fun

Noice
As long as you put a V8 in it.

I so miss that free reving fun.. Damn they are a great car to drive...
lmao, I know, I know, put an LS-3 in it lol
Over my worn out tip seals I will. lmao

10:48 PM
No, actually a 4.8 or 5.3 truck motor would do it great.

lmao, I would need to beef up the springs and shocks just the keep the front tires on the road over bumps lol

I know, a diesel, with the really tall stacks... lol

On a two seater.... gotta love it
Tow a huge boat with it
replace the entire frame and drop the old body onto it.. lol
would need to anyway. Anything from that era could well be a rust farmer
It's why I want to go to AZ for a few weeks to find one and bring it home

10:51 PM
Actually the 86 I have in my driveway is in great shape.

RX-7?

Camaro.
silly

I meant specifically late 70's Gen 1 rx7's
They tend to rust our along the lower edge of the quarter panels and all below the doors..

Hey @Moab - How are you sir?

Very good, thank you for asking, Beer>Cigar>mow lawn

Hopefully not in that order ;-)
Friends should not allow friends to mow drunk, as I'm sure you are aware ;-)

If its not dangerous I don't want to do it, keeps me on my toes...

Or is that the GT & TL absolute?
@Moab I'm with you on that one :D
