12:02 AM
HEDT has always been about pushing the limits of performance, at whatever cost.

Hence me calling them a halo product
f1 cars are great advertising. Can't drive one to a grocery store ;)

@ScumMaster Different sellers will offer different listings at amazon. ""Ordered item 3 times. Each time it was not new, nor factory sealed , nor in original packaging; differently and rather poorly packed each time. The disk and plugs showed signs of use. The 2nd time amazon assured me the next one would be new. No luck. I gave up after three tries. I don't see that it's up to me to test to see whether a returned item works as it should. For that I would look on ebay.""
So at least one person discovered that the seller might be dealing in "returns"

Meanwhile, an AMD Zen 8C/16T engineering sample runs at 3 GHz within a 95W envelope: eteknix.com/amd-zen-8core-engineering-sample-leaked

user187418

Though rumors, they seem to be matching Broadwell-E in performance per clock: techfrag.com/2016/04/02/first-amd-zen-benchmarks-leaked What I'm reading suggests Zen will be just short of Skylake IPC. If AMD gets this right, they could force Intel to drop the prices on their HEDT chips.
Intel has held a monopoly position at the far high end of the x86 spectrum and is free to charge as much as the market will bear, but AMD could change all that.
Only time will tell if Zen will actually deliver on its promises.

12:13 AM
That box looks... unhealthy.

user187418
yeah ...

What's the point of a C236 board for consumers?
C236 is a server/workstation chipset.

@bwDraco disguise camouflage.

Gigabyte's branding really risks confusing consumers.

@bwDraco market segmentation I suppose
people were throwing low end xeons into Z boards
IIRC the z170s don't actually support xeon
and in some cases a e3/e5 is a pretty good choice

12:28 AM
It seems as if the motherboard manufacturers have been running contrary to Intel's strategy lately.

Intel wants to segment out its chip market
motherboard makers want to differenciate themselves

Intel doesn't let Xeons run on consumer chipsets? Make consumer boards with workstation chipsets!
Intel doesn't allow non-K processors to be overclocked? Add a clock generator to bypass the processor/chipset restriction!

Sounds like good business decisions.
MORE POWER!

there are many flavors of xeons ? I run a xeon in one of the older Core2 quads, only because at the time it was the exact same price as a "consumer" quad of the same thing. Other than it supporting ECC (which the board itself did not) there was zero difference in speed or on-die cache quantity.

I'm getting the feeling that Intel and motherboard makers are at odds with each other for the Skylake generation. Intel is aggressively segmenting the market to try to maximize profits given that AMD has not been competitive, but the motherboard manufacturers aren't cooperating.
Perhaps Intel sees AMD as a growing threat and it wants as much money as possible now to try to stay ahead for the 10nm generation.

12:33 AM
There was also zero difference in ability to overclock it the same.

It's now or never for Intel. Get as much cash as you can before AMD steals it away when Zen comes out.

@bwDraco Just wait until Microsoft starts with the Win10+ only for Skylake chips.

I see a flurry of lawsuits coming from Intel against ASRock et al. for enabling overclocking on non-K processors.
Feb 17 at 16:15, by bwDraco
> You agree not to release any Firmware, Microcode, or other functionality which enables the operation of any non-Unlocked Intel Processor outside of its published specifications, including operation in excess of its specified clock frequency.
Feb 17 at 16:05, by bwDraco
"In addition, we may pursue legal action to recover damages due to your violation of the [Intel chipset/motherboard agreement]."

meh
Intel will just release microcode modifications to block that
sueing a major motherboard maker is silly
especially when asrock is iirc owned by asus

yaaawwwn, then AMD can start suing all the manufactures of "pre-Overclocked" GPUS too, just to add to the fun.
The suing starts after someone actually begins to lose big money, they dont start loosing big money until people who "can afford it" Prefer to buy the lesser and pump it up. Most times the people who "can afford it" buy the better stuff even knowing they could get within a few percentages with the cheaper stuff.

12:47 AM
some websites wont load
eg, putlocker.com and dagobah.com
they timeout in the browser and when pinged

ASRock et al. keep finding ways to circumvent Intel's restrictions.
It's all fun and games until somebody gets sued for this.
ASRock was already coerced to remove SkyOC from its boards.
(and I'm not using the word "coerced" for no reason.)
I've lost faith in ASRock because they're not playing by the rules.
Mar 9 at 17:40, by bwDraco
I might just refuse to buy ASRock at this point. As noble a cause as you might consider it to be, I don't want to trust a motherboard manufacturer that seems to have an axe to grind with Intel.
It's not a matter of their removing SkyOC. It's their overt refusal to cooperate with Intel.
First it's SkyOC, now they're putting a dedicated clock gen to do BCLK overclocking on any chip.
Mar 9 at 17:45, by bwDraco
Sure, Intel may be imposing silly restrictions, but I'd rather get a motherboard from a brand I can reasonably expect to stand behind their products rather than one that might suddenly pull out of the market because Intel forced their hand.

bclk overclocking started way way back, when it was called the FSB aka base clock, aka same freaking thing. As time has progressed intel detached various aspects of the cpu from this base clock, allowing the base to be varied without the rest (and the reverse). skylake just addded in one more detachment from the base.
Back in the previous one, it was the uncore aka the cache memory that intel allowed to be clocked seperate. Fact is many of the Wild hype overclocks you will see posted on the web are just the CPU. While some people say "cpu clocks are king" the cache clock is the queen, and the queen puts the king in check.

> ASRock is going to war with a company that has not been known to fuck around lightly.

1:04 AM
@bwDraco Asrock is essentially Asus' going nuts on things
So, no, at most intel will disable things with microcode updates, and everyone will be passive agressive as usual

I've said this several times already. ASRock is on very shaky ground here and is at risk of getting sued.
Sure, ASRock is part of Pegatron, which in turn is part of Asus, but ASRock is autonomous for the most part.

@JourneymanGeek right intel will releace a "Investors Appeasment" patch because the news (from 1999) got outside of the overclocking community :-)

Nope. No Sueage

ASRock going "f--- you Intel, we're putting a dedicated clock generator on the board to enable overclocking anyway" is not going to end well.

1:07 AM
Yes, you have. I'm saying there's no real reason

@bwDraco All Intel need to do is say something to the effect of "Use of our locked processor on these devices may void your warranty."

@MichaelFrank This has the real potential to eat into Intel's profits. Intel is not earning the premium it normally gets by only allowing K parts to be overclocked.
This is meritorious grounds for a lawsuit.
As greedy and evil as Intel may seem, this is not the right call for ASRock to make.
It's not merely a matter of whether Intel supports this under warranty. It's Intel's very bottom line that is impacted by this.

@bwDraco what do you care? i thought you were going all ZEN now :-)

Because there is no real competition against Intel right now, they are not under pressure to enable overclocking on cheaper processors. Consumers can and will pay more for unlocked chips, assuming Intel enforces the restrictions on locked parts.
Sure, Zen could change all that, but this is the way things are right now.

I think you should concentrate your efforts on whomever owns the patent on Icons, because there has been blatent misuses of them in many different OSes :-)

@Psycogeek !!wat
Ehh... what is it?

whoops.

then would you believe the "Slider patent" mspoweruser.com/44258-2 probably invented around 1983
lets not forget the "ribbon" which existed in very similar forms in many different programs, before the lawyers , or programmers arguing about it were even born :-)

1:38 AM
imagine the number of computer "innovations" that possibly could have been patented and had costly (for the taxpayers) lawsuits inititated. That could have completely changed our present view of computers and software. From nickle and dime paying for the tons of things that were invented, or to visual and interactive changes avoiding and circumventing those.

I'm really not sure what to say at this point. I have work to do, see ya in a bit.

O_________O and it doesn't even seem to be too good to be true

@JourneymanGeek lol

Myself i just cant wait till programs come out that want me to install .net , python, visual studio, work also with powershell and need linux too..

such cynicism ;p
It also means you can just detect OS, and run the same bash or powershell scripts everywhere

well i aint typing that stuff , and providing another way to delete all my files, is not really that interesting to me.
typing big strings of blather that all have to be letter perfect, is like digging a hole with your hands, while leaning up against a shovel .
I am (in fact) looking forward to them putting all that into a GUI because it will be in windows, and typing it once correct for thousands of people will pay off in the long run.
Then i just push the freaking button.

Got it on the first try today.
I think I have it figured out.
That's after most of my brute screen got destroyed :(
@JourneymanGeek So, you finished too? :P

> PC users won't be forgotten, with 10nm-class DDR4 modules, ranging from 4GB for notebook PCs, to 128GB for enterprise servers, rolling out throughout 2016.
Meh.
Well, meh on the 4GB SO-DIMMs. That's ancient.
128GB LR/FB-DIMMs on the other hand...
Bearing in mind you need at least four per processor to get full performance, that's like, 1TB of RAM minimum in an E5-2xxx system.
Ooh Quantum Break is out today.

._.
What's the advantage of a smaller process size?
lower power usage?

> From the outset these new memory chips are said to offer improved data rates and power efficiency over the previous 20nm-class memory chips. The new DRAM is capable of 30 per cent better performance, supporting data rates up to 3,200Mbps. Energy consumption benefits are also evident, but not quite as good, with 10 to 20 per cent less power consumed by the new chips. Samsung says it leveraged proprietary cell design technology, QPT (quadruple patterning technology) lithography, and ultra-thin dielectric layer deposition technology to produce the new chips.

@kerbalspacebecky I need to see about getting me one of them cat11 pocket wifi things :P
@kerbalspacebecky read: Galaxy S8 will have 6 GB of RAM
Maybe even 8 :P
Nah, that's unlikely.

@Bob Why? Your phone's potentially capable of Cat 12/13 anyway

Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Cause I use a different network for data...

Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Also, didn't you say it was limited to cat 9 yesterday?

12:07 PM
Dual-SIM it :-x

@kerbalspacebecky ...not the dual-SIM model :(

@Bob Rumours are the Note 6 will have 6GB.

I think the last record was actually some 1.3 TB
That photo though :P

Heh. cat 11 will do me a whole lot of good (not)

> He connected his laptop to a Wi-Fi hotspot on his LG G4 phone, receiving average download speeds of around 180Mbps.

Bob
@kerbalspacebecky That's actually a good point, I could use my G4.

12:10 PM
I suspect the Wi-Fi on his phone was the limiting factor there, and using a USB tether would have yielded higher speeds.

Bob
...except this is a full-size SIM
-_-
@kerbalspacebecky Hm. The G4 is capable of 802.11ac, but I don't know about the laptop.
802.11ac could potentially be a lot more bandwidth than USB 2.0 :P

@Bob Android to date has never allowed using 5Ghz for the WiFi hotspot.

Bob
Oh.
So basically the upper limit would be some 400-450Mbps on USB.

Ahh Soviet Tank. Like Soviet Bear. Very Cuddly. Crush Puny Emperor in bear hug!

@Bob Earlier single-stream phones had a headline rate of 433Mbps on AC, and newest 2x2 AC phones have 866. On paper, not hugely different to USB 2, but far less than USB 3/USB-C

Bob
12:12 PM
Hm. Was the Intel 535 one of the good SSDs or bad ones? :P
MLC 480 GB for $195 isn't bad either way.

To get 180Mbps download though he'd have to have been using 2x2 MIMO and HT-40 on the phone, which IIRC Android doesn't permit either, so I wonder what was going on exactly

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Apocalypse tank?

@Bob pair of em ;p

@Bob did you ever take a look at Deserts of Kharak?

12:40 PM
@kerbalspacebecky dont know what do you mean but I have answered question

Bob
@allquixotic um, not yet
Finished that aots mission, started soase, can't decide if I should just play rebellion or buy trinity...
Then played ra3 uprising for a bit
Speaking of... @allquixotic, would you say trinity is worth playing first?

SoaSE Trinity is just all the expansions together, I think
oh, nvm
Rebellion includes the other expansions
there are three expansions to Sins, and you can't have a newer expansion without also having the previous expansion. there's Entrenchment, Diplomacy, and Rebellion
if you have Rebellion, then you have the other two and shouldn't buy Trinity

Bob
12:58 PM
@allquixotic does it include the campaigns too?

1:20 PM
@Bob there are no campaigns for SoaSE

Bob
1:31 PM
@allquixotic ...*oh*
@allquixotic So it's basically just skirmishes?

2:01 PM
anybody used grep for windows

Bob
Which one?

Bob
bleh. I used it once upon a time. command-line now, though. usually.
Huh, it hasn't been updated since then either.

2:19 PM
I use whatever flavour of grep that's in GOW

@AndrewSmith The huh?
@allquixotic Ooh, you play it?

@kerbalspacebecky yep, it rocks
@Bob yeah, but they're tactically more interesting skirmishes than any strategy game you've ever played before

Bob
Heh.
I'll take a look at Deserts after I finish Uprising again :P
Does that have a campaign?

yes, Deserts of Kharak's campaign is fantastic... pretty short, but like 4 times longer than AotS's campaign, and it has selectable difficulty levels, and easy is actually easy
fully voiced and the story is memorable
one of the best strategy game stories since C&C
you really need to play DoK for the story, and SoaSE for our Saturday/Sunday multiplayer sessions :P

Bob
lol
will do

I say, whatever fappened to Gems From SO?

what ever happened to qasasdfasd

Thanks @That for your services. That's surely portuguese, right?

@jokerdino Yes, although probably not from Brazil
@Alex What do you mean by "a ssh tunnel layer 3"?

want to make a tunnel to route the traffic of a server to another server. I used ssh -w 0:0 root@151.45.142.19 -p 202 true, PermitTunnel and PermitRootLogin is set on both of the servers but when I want to make the tunnel by above command , it dose not make the tun0 interface

@ThatBrazilianGuy what other options do I have?

@jokerdino Portugal, Africa, China...

China?

Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; 澳門; 澳门; "Bay gate"), also spelled Macao, officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a special administrative region on the southern coast of the People's Republic of China. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong of Mainland China to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south. With an estimated population of around 636,200 living in an area of 30.3 km2 (11.6 sq mi), it is the most densely populated...

ah, Vegas of the east.

@DavidPostill Hi

any idea about the problem I wrote about tunneling traffic through ssh(layer 3)

5:47 PM
@Prasanna Hi. Did you want something from me?

> As Portuguese Macau, it was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia under Portugal.[7][8] Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port.
> The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999.

@Alex I dont do tunneling. sorry

@Alex Not only you exposed no problem, you also didn't answer requests for clarification.
@jokerdino What do you mean by that?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Macau is famous for gambling resorts.
@ThatBrazilianGuy he posted a 3 liner somewhere above
There were also small pockets of land under Portuguese control in India.

5:50 PM
@jokerdino To me, it's famous for being "somewhere in China where people speak Portuguese"
Actaully, that's all I know about it

it's a bigger gambling spot than Vegas these days.

@That, I followed taos.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/… , "Establishing a layer-3 SSH VPN using "tun" devices" to make a proxy for my server, but when I use the command ssh -w 0:0 root@151.45.142.19 -p 202 true but it stuck there and dose not terminate.
