5) taxes

3) sell it

isn't that what synergise means? ;)

synergise means it is a pyramid scheme

lol

its true see dictionary
synergy (sîn´er-jê) noun
plural synergies
1. The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.
2. Cooperative interaction among groups, especially among the acquired subsidiaries or merged parts of a corporation, that creates an enhanced combined effect.
AKA something for nothing
Luckily most people running pyramid schemes have not yet realised the statement IDs it as a pyramid scheme, soo us knowing folks just Run when they use that word.

@Hennes Yep. Flagging as spam.

madhavbDo you know how to defragment you hard disk on the computer. just read this article here

i think you are seeing something that us proles cannot see...

9:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek Answer was spam. Question is old so probably not spam seed

Naw, the other question, the one I just spam flagged and nuked....

We can expect more. He has a bunch of articles on his blog that are ripe for promoting in spam answers.

what user?

ah
well i discovered last night that until you hit 1k rep your links have no-follow on

9:28 AM
sigh It makes me sad that people think this is fine.
Yup
And there's very few situations where linking back to a personal blog is essential for an answer
I've vaguely done it on HR.se

A: Laptop for simple tasks and remote work

Journeyman GeekThere's chromebook class "windows for bing" boxen that fit most of your needs. I'm pretty happy with my HP stream 11 and there's a new, lighter version coming out soon. Lenovo has a similar system and I seem to remember dell did (tho the smallest screen I can find is 15 inches) and there may be o...

looooong writeup.TINY link to my review of it at the end

GAH! /index.php/ !

the old installations of wordpress didn't prettify the urls properly and added /index.php/ in every url

ahh
its an older install, which I've kept up to date
If I didn't have a backlog of stuff I wanted to write about I might look at prettifying it and/or moving to something not wordpress

my first job at an SEO company was to go through 250 WP sites and fix the redirects to remove the /index.php/

9:35 AM
Well
I don't bother about SEO

exactly

I write, cause I want to
and every so often someone goes "Hey, that was helpful <3"

the site functions and gets indexed regardless

my boss thought he knew seo but didn't

9:37 AM
quite honestly, its more important that I find stuff when I need it ;p

so when i see index.php in a WP link i break out in a cold sweat

that blog has documentation of most of the tiny annoying fixes on my ttrss install for example (and instructions on how to do it)
(like how to mod the dark theme so its not monochrome)

my blog has been in development for about 6 years
i just lack the time outside of work to work on it
suddenly almost everything else in the world is waaaaaay more important

;p
I should have time, I guess
tho now I'm sitting in my gran's house on a sorta vacation. Ploughed through both of three body problem novels that have been translated so far, and 3 of the 5 MHI novels (which I reread cause they're kinda fun)

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries?

Anoooos

bunch of pulpy novels about a 'combat accountant' working for a company who hunt down monsters.

ah cool
i'm reading the terrible first book in the saga of the seven suns

(I have a lot of ebooks, Mostly from baen)
ahh KJA

awful pacing, too many 1D characters, incoherent story

9:46 AM
I still need to read the last book from that (in dead tree format)

not going to bother with the rest of the series
i'm not a fan of ebooks
prefer the dead tree version
i like to see physical books as a form of carbon capture
@Hennes do they get better?

@Burgi @Hennes I prefer dead trees but in this case ebooks are easier to carry around.

Another one

fixed formatting, asked citations, protected questions
@Burgi I use a kindle paperwhite to read on trips and on buses (which is actually pretty handy)
Tho, its nice that I can increase print size slightly
(Makes it easier to read. My eyesight is about as good as the average terrier geek, so I need glasses, but larger fonts are typically more dyslexic friendly)
So for me its hardcovers (<3 but pricy + bulky :( ), > softcovers > kindle > nice screens > normal screens
(unrelatedly, stuff to look forward to when I get home. Roomie, nice screens, box of SE swag from that competition on MSE...)

10:10 AM
My eyesight is about as good as the average terrier - you see smells?

Urgh why is the questions list full of 2+ year old Nvidia questions all of a sudden

@qasdfdsaq Tag edits

I need to figure out a way to hide tag edits -_- Getting tired of 12 out of 14 questions I open being >2 years old and no longer relevant, after I spend ages reading them
I would write a tampermonkey script to auto-close the window if it is a >2 year old question but thanks to hackers I can't close tabs from scripts. Urgh

@JourneymanGeek Yeah but a) I have to keep an extra shortcut to get to that page and b) It's a lot less space efficient (far more scrolling on this annoying work mous ethat doesn't scroll well)

that's the closest thing I can think of
yeah
tag edits are one of those things we don't do well
or anything that needs to be edited in bulk I guess

wow... that is a hideous way to deal with adblock

that is a bastardised version

@Burgi Yep
Most sites that do that I just block the bitching about adblock with adblock, but in this case it's not working, I suspect I need to block a script somewhere.

didn't work

@Burgi decent guess. That looks like a screw drive as well

Do you need a screwdriver to drive a screw drive?

No, you are not allowed to drink screwdrivers

12:13 PM
Nope.

A screwdriver is a popular alcoholic highball drink made with orange juice and vodka. While the basic drink is simply the two ingredients, there are many variations; the most common one is made with one part vodka, one part of any kind of orange soda, and one part of orange juice. Many of the variations have different names in different parts of the world. The International Bartender Association has designated this cocktail as an IBA Official Cocktail. == History == This drink appears in literature as early as 1938 "And answered it "The famous Smirnoff Screwdriver", Just pour a jigger of smirnoff...

Hmm.

Huh. So Apple did intentionally make the iPhone 6s slightly water resistant
My bet is still on Apple deliberately holding back waterproofing until the iPhone 7 which will be the "first" waterproof phone to be fully usable underwater.

Software, why all software SUCKs nowdays.
i can "find the device" , just gimme a dang Manual select , or would that be to difficult for the average geek spending $130 on a input device.

> I'm not going to womansplain feminism to you. It's the 21st century and you are, most assuredly, not a dick. You like women being equal to men — which is all that feminism means. Not all the penises being burned in a Penis Bonfire. Just women being equal to men. You are like my friend John, when he talks about dating alpha-women: "Feel intimidated by them? Christ, no. Dating and marrying powerful women is like big game hunting. I fuck tigers and panthers. Not… chihauhaus."
> Because remember that patriarchy's bumming you as hard as it's bumming us. We're bulimic, objectified and under-promoted. You, meanwhile, are unable to talk about your feelings lest you get punched in the nuts by "a lad" telling you not to be "a bender".
You are unlikely to get custody of your kids, and are three times more likely to commit suicide. Feminism's about sorting all this stuff out. Because it's about equality. Not burning the penises. I can't emphasise enough how much it's not about burning penises. No burnt penises here.

Q: What is pirated software?

PandyaI heard about pirated software. so, I want to know what is pirated software? Also want to know which term is used for non-pirated software. Note: If there is other term should be used (or more appropriate/specific) rather than "pirated", then also suggest it.

1:20 PM
That name is familiar.

The "yaaaar" should get me at least +10.... :S
LOL

Lol flagbait. That should probably go on my Facebook where it can't get flagged.

We are veering into flagging dangerous territory now.

@Burgi arrr pirate software is the kind that you can use with one eye, and a hook. If'n you get it from eeligitimate sources it could have your computer walking the plank or being keelhauled, which generally is not good for it. People who dont know what pirated software is after using web resources easily available are often found strung up on the yardarms , or beat over the head with them stick things that hold the ropes.

hehe

1:30 PM
Pirate software is software for pirates, rite? xD
Life as a pirate in a modern world...
With the complexity of our modern world they need digital maps, you know!

somali pirates need software to catalogue and inventory their booty
obviously they do this properly and put it out to tender

Traceroute

All information is transferred over the 'net by pirates1.

When you send your data somewhere, what *really* happens is that one of your pirates picks up that data, works out where he's going and strides purposefully off down the information superhighway.

Normal pirates are fit and strong. They can walk nearly any distance. Occasionally, though, you'll send them to somewhere that just doesn't exist. Then they may realise they can't get any closer, in which case they'll just curl up and die2.

There used to be this "Parrot" DOS application that used to do audio filtering rather.. It was great

@TomWijsman ?

@Pandya Psssht. I don't think he's captain! Don't tell him or anyone...

well he does have the parrot, soooo i just figured.

1:42 PM
Time for an obligatory ...

Is pirated software is the same as counterfeit software said by microsoft?

yes

@Burgi Thanks

Strictly speaking, no.

@Pandya Please note that pirated (cracked) software that is downloaded from random locations on the internet is very likely to be infested with key loggers/trojans/virus/...

1:49 PM
Counterfeit software even more so

@qasdfdsaq what is counterfeit software? (different from pirated?)

Counterfeit software is pirated software that claims to be genuine.

@DavidPostill point to be noted. Thanks
@qasdfdsaq you can add your answer to question
By the way Does "piracy" come into picture (apply) in-case of free-software? @DavidPostill

yes
some free software has restrictions on who can use it for free
for example the latest visual studio is free...

@Pandya yes.

1:55 PM
... to amataurs and companies with less than 200 employees

Counterfeit software probably comes in a box tho

that might be a localised thing though
never seen boxed illegal software in the UK

Remember that I'm talking about free/libre software

boxed illegal dvds and music.... yes
@Pandya yeah

Might be a thing in China. The worst I've seen is shitty single colour printed CDs in baggies.
That was something like 20 years ago

1:59 PM
Lol
My parents used to import some pretty decent looking counterfeit Windows discs back in those days...
I was too young to know the differnece.

This was before fast internet.

@Pandya Free software cannot be pirated, unless someone steals the program or source code and tries to pass it off as their own creation)

Yes it can.
Also separately, terms of the license can be violated. Free of charge doesn't mean license-free

thats sort of what i was trying to say
just not as clearly or concisely

@Pandya It depends on the licence.
@Burgi I've seen boxed pirated DVDs in the UK. I suppose some of those could have been software and not films ("adult" or otherwise). You will see that kind of stuff at car boot sales ...

2:05 PM
@DavidPostill i just assumed they were films

2:13 PM
OK. yes, I think it depends on license @DavidPostill
Hmm., proprietary software mostly puts the restrictions for copying , using, distributing etc by means of license and violating it (license) makes it pirated right?

Kinda
@Burgi 19000 to go :)

@DavidPostill ahh. The 24k is recent and as a mod, I've had that

out of curiosity, without wanting to step on any toes, why would a sock account be useful to a high rep user?
purely theoretical of course

is there a free text field for flag mods to add a comment for the flagger?

errrrr maybe?
I think there is but there's very few situations where its needed, and I never got into the habit.

ok
sort of a "hey this would have been a better flag if you'd done XYZ" type field

There is one but we don't use it

is it a time thing or just that you know users aren't as OCD as me?
i'm just curious btw

Why is Seagate not making SSDs for the consumer market?

3:43 PM
@Burgi we have buttons and some text field.

I suppose Seagate does not want to enter the extremely crowded consumer SSD market. Flash-accelerated hard drives and enterprise SSDs seem to be more likely to sell than consumer SSDs.

@jokerdino that you randomly mash in the hope of being coherent? ;)
its my normal approach to computing

Yes / No/ This guy dun goofed / Wanna give him a spanking? / Add some words here.

In enterprise space, margins are much larger as businesses are more than willing to pay for cutting-edge technology and maximum reliability. Consumers aren't exactly willing to do the same, with the exception of a very small enthusiast niche (hence devices like the datacenter-derived Intel SSD 750).

3:46 PM
@qasdfdsaq wtf....

Lol.
Good job more people have access to cameras these days... got the right bugger's face, vehicle, and registration all on record.

this morning there was a woman on the motorway driving a car branded with her company information CLEANING HER TEETH!!!!!!
what sort of idiot cleans their teeth while driving a 1 tonne death machine at 80+ mph
clearly there is nothing more important you could be doing...

4:17 PM
like picking your nose?

cool, @RogUE has 666 rep
you should get a badge for that

4:36 PM
Wow. Silly little design oversight.
No output-tray-full sensor causes the printer to jam on very long print jobs that span both the main paper cassette and the optional second paper cassette.
More than 500 sheets in, the printer fails with a "Print Zone Jam" because it fails to detect the output tray is full.

5:03 PM
Hmm. So Seagate does have consumer SSDs but they haven't seen widespread market acceptance.

5:15 PM
Why do I get this feeling that ASRock is going to get into legal trouble with Intel at some point?
On the approach to 3,000 flags...

@bwDraco dont completlyunderstand, but all the OC board asus and gig for sure, i was able to OC my cheap test (and spare) haswell chip with so little trouble , without even altering the bclk, and often there is "strap" that notches the rate for the whole base clock, without changing the PCI rate. IMO it is all about hav9ing an OC motherboard first.

ASRock is putting a dedicated clock gen for the BCLK on the board.

sure but there are like 4 methods, 3 when the chips are "locked" they just added the 4th bak for locked.
some of the methods would not be the type used for Extreeme LN point wining overclocking, but for your average users that is just a waste of time, they and even most OCer need a 24-7 setting, after playing cute number games.

I talked about ASRock (and other motherboard manufacturers) contractually bound to not enable overclocking on non-unlocked processors. Chances are not bad ASRock will either get sued or lose its license to manufacture Intel boards altogether.

chances are intel will sell more chips again :-)
intel provides a few tools for overclocking

Feb 17 at 16:15, by bwDraco
> You agree not to release any Firmware, Microcode, or other functionality which enables the operation of any non-Unlocked Intel Processor outside of its published specifications, including operation in excess of its specified clock frequency.

> Tax forms can change
Although it's rare, some companies update the tax information they provide, even into March and April. If your 1099 is affected, we'll update your form and email you.
we can give you a good idea.
looks like a string of text not deleted from a draft copy
"we can give you a good idea."

@bwDraco again, what overclock board does not already do that?

@Psycogeek ASRock is bypassing the restrictions enforced by the chipset and putting a separate clock generator to directly overclock the BCLK.

@bwDraco if they're serious about SSHDs they should really consider sticking more SSD in their SSHDs - 8 GB is not sufficient to provide a very measurable perf increase

5:34 PM
i am working now on a 129$ gig board, that i pushed a 3.2 to 4.2 , ooooh outside of the published specifications.

My main concern is that nobody else seems to be doing this and it is in direct contravention of Intel's intended processor strategy, where only specific SKUs are allowed to be overclocked.
Jan 9 at 5:35, by bwDraco
Seagate really needs to come out with new SSHDs that have more NAND. 32 GB of NV cache would dramatically boost overall system performance. 8 GB only provides a limited boost depending on your application.

@bwDraco the main problem, is you have not got yourself a cool OC board to make yourself a desktop, and seen what is possible.
(and how much time you can waste exploring those possibilites)
crasier still was OCing the "server" chips, as originally that was pretty heavily locked down, eventually intels own boards now have OCing ability on desk and server. before they were stuck, and solid as a rock.

I might just refuse to buy ASRock at this point. As noble a cause as you might consider it to be, I don't want to trust a motherboard manufacturer that seems to have an axe to grind with Intel.

does intel lose money as OCers get weasily little chips and push them up to similars? no because OCers are intent on thier goals, they still beg to buy into big numbers

More significantly, I cannot be sure that ASRock will remain in the market for long enough to continue supporting their products because this is the kind of conduct that can get them in trouble.
Sure, Intel may be imposing silly restrictions, but I'd rather get a motherboard from a brand I can reasonably expect to stand behind their products rather than one that might suddenly pull out of the market because Intel forced their hand.

5:46 PM
@bwDraco i can think of better reasons to avoid asrock, they tend to be more experimental, and have made more flops. just make sure like anything you wait till some other sucker tests new versions.

I know that ASRock has done some pretty zany things like putting a server-grade SAS controller onto an enthusiast motherboard (ASRock X99 Extreme11).
This whole non-K BCLK overclocking issue, with Intel issuing mandatory (to motherboard manufacturers) microcode updates and ASRock going out of their way to release a motherboard with a dedicated clock generator to bypass the chipset restrictions altogether, is costing ASRock my faith in them.
Sure, I don't like Intel's restrictions and ASRock has noble intentions, but I have serious doubts about whether they can continue to make Intel motherboards for much longer.

I am a cat

@qasdfdsaq meow
@allquixotic, @qasdfdsaq, your thoughts on this ASRock BCLK overclocking issue?

@bwDraco and of course the MB manufactures wouldnt have any (hundreds) of intel secrets about problems in thier chips , that dont much make it to the public. intel suing asrock (for what damages?) is not likely to happen, and if it did it might just make apple more popular (at least with terrorist ;-)
