I wonder if we could/should just remove our policy on closing development release questions entirely. If they're asking about something no one knows yet it's primarily opinion based, and if something isn't working in a beta release it's a bug so those are both covered by other reasons...

@Seth well those users will revolt yelling "But this is not opinion based ! I have specific issue "

@Serg they already do that ;)

@Seth well at least "unsuported release" makes sense as a closing reason. "This is still in beta and not officially supported, most people won't know what you're talking about"

12:48 AM
@ParanoidPanda - I'm snickering that you one-upped @kos 's answer that meta was complaining about.

Moving a 750GB partition. Says 2.5hrs left
@Serg and also that it's probably a bug, and that bugs need to be reported to go away

@Seth to add a little to the thought process there, we could get harder on "beta release" questions instead of saying "they're sort of okay some of the time" - which is the standing policy.

Agreed

That would make it a more valid close reason - since point in time covers "not usefully answerable" and "bug" covers actual bugs. So, keeping it around leaves the getting harder on them option available without re-adding a close reason.
Alternately, we could have a beta flag reason that auto-tags it "beta" if the flag is accepted. Then after release - purge the beta tag by deleting or answering.
@Serg ^^ thoughts on the second one?

1:07 AM
progress on spirit scope update:

Better on the colors

I think I just need to find a nicer color on table wine

@hbdgaf well, who is going to be deleting the beta tags ?

although not bad:

@Serg It gives you a way to sort to find them. Then, if you answer it, you edit it and answer or cast a delete vote/flag for all out deletion.

1:09 AM
maybe just mute the color a bit

If you're not stuck on colors, I think a woodgrain tile would look nice.

that would be cool, I was thinking bubbles on sparkling ;)

Since it probably includes some things not bubbling or sparking, I would think no on that. Whatever you think though.

hm, muting it a bit wokred
did I show you the logo the other day?

nope

1:18 AM

Oh, yes you did, but you have revised it since.

yeah, adding the wine in the glass
I might clean up the lines a bit, otherwise I think I like it

Just a recommendation. If you're going to have sharp edges, use them everywhere. If you're going to do blurred edges/irregular edges, use them everywhere except your font. Nobody should ever use comic sans for any reason.

yep, will do a pen tool trace of the brush lines

1/7th done

1:22 AM
K. The combination of the two is subconsciously jarring and makes me not like it as much as the one without the wine in it - even though I think it's better with the wine in it.

Agreed ^

cool, that and I threw it together with brush/eraser real quick ;)
so, revision 2 will be vector all the way

You mean like my "test rig" of the card game with big gray buttons instead of drag and drop cards ;)
@Zacharee1 has clearly never downloaded an iso on dialup.

Good evening/morning everyone

ugt morning

1:28 AM
@hbdgaf I downloaded a 6.2GB ISO on a 5mbps connection. I think that's comparable
And I have used dialup
And it's horrible

drwxrwxr-x 5 odoo odoo 4096 Mar 17 02:15 . please what's the meaning of 5(or any number) with ls -la i've been using that as far as i can remember but i never paid attention to that

It is, but Not even close. A ring in for call waiting couldn't knock your 5Mb connection offline ;)

by that i mean ls -la sorry for the that, that

@hbdgaf but Service Electric and its "very reliable connection" can

@danidee number of blocks probably. i'ld have to check
nope, number of entries in a given folder

1:33 AM
@hbdgaf yes but that pushes away questions we can answer, which doesn't do anyone any good except the place those people go after us.

@Seth Maybe, if you go down from that a little - the second maybe option is probably better.

okay thanks

@hbdgaf this is why we just say to not post them

I personally don't post them unless I have a workaround. I'm looking at possible solutions for the floods of questions I've seen over time at every release date.

1:56 AM
> But, I think law enforcement has the better argument. This concerns the phone of one of the San Bernardino hackers, and for law enforcement to get a judicial search order, that's consistent with the Fourth Amendment. That's how the bill of rights operates.
San Bernardino hackers?!
lol Cruz

Nobody claimed any of the candidates were intelligent.

ok, now is the point of feature planning, and making a fallback so my features don't spiral out of control and destroy everything ;P

2 days ago, by hbdgaf
All software development is just honeybadgers juggling chainsaws until they have one too many chainsaws in the air.

:)

If that's the most notable thing I ever say, I'm going to be really disappointed in myself... but it does really fit.

2:11 AM
@hbdgaf nobody? hehe. :p

@Seth Nobody's on third.

Who's on third.

No, Who's on first.

What?

I was able to use just one block for forming the client address on the command line scope, I was pleased with that

2:13 AM
@Seth I don't know the bit by heart, but I acknowledge the joke.

xD

;)

Nice shout out to the @NathanOsman magic.

I try and do that whenever I get something not completely understood, and it does it's magic thing

Q: Sendmail under www-data

UncelvelI have problem with sendmail in Server Ubuntu 14.04. Sendmail is automatic working i can not stop this. How can i do to fix this issue?

2 hours later…
7:21 AM
@kos did you flag them also?

kos
@blade19899 Yes, I usually flag them and downvote them if they're at 0 so that I'm able to also vote to delete them.

@Serg I adapted the answer you linked me and it also failed test #11 like mine:
def golf(nums,skipped=False):
    if nums:
        x = int(nums[0]) # grab current number
        if x < 0 and not skipped: # is this one negative ?
            print ('Skipping',x)
            return golf(nums[1:],True) # then skip
        else:
            print ('returning',x)
            return x+golf(nums[1:],False) # otherwise, don't skip
    else:
        return 0 # prevents returning none
Your result:-11
Right answer:-2
Fail:golf((-10, -1, -1, -10))
Now trying Oli's solution...
@Oli WOW, Thanks! Your solution works! \o/ :D
I compressed it a bit to get below the 150 character limit:
def golf(l,f=False):
 if not f:
  l=(0,)+l
 return l[0]+max(golf(l[1:],True),golf(l[2:],True) if len(l)>1 else 0) if l else 0
Even only 125 characters!
Great! Thank you very much!
Puzzle solved ---^ (CC @kos @TheBrownOne @Serg)

@Rinzwind -1 (askubuntu.com/a/746983/380067). Where am I supposed to to note down to change it in 27 years?
:D

@kos I got a good idea a bit later
-1 works too and -1 I have seen often as an option to disable

Q: Unable to detach a USB device on Ubuntu 14.04

NTNI was using udisks to unmount and detach usb device with following commands which works just fine on Ubuntu 10.04 udisks --unmount /dev/sdb1 udisks --detach /dev/sdb Because udisks is not available on Ubunti 14.04, I was trying udisksctl. It works for unmount as udisksctl unmount --block-devi...

kos
@Rinzwind Now you're living up to your name. ;)

8:32 AM
of course :=D
it got me another commandline non-wiki answer
cuz I added commandline to the tags :-X

@SmokeDetector Already deleted.

hey Byte

kos
@Ferrybig Just curious, is it intentional to not make SmokeDetector reply to !!/ commands in this room?

8:48 AM
@kos With the current source code of smokey, it is easy to make it report to a room, but making him listen to a room would require some more modifications to main code, and creating yet another list of user id's who have the smoke detector permissions. Making smoke detector report only is the easiest solution that report & reply code. If this is really needed, we can probably as Undo to add it to the code

kos
@Ferrybig No, not really needed AFAIK, thanks. I was just curious as to why it doesn't work here.

lots of spam today :P

@Fabby
Recursion to the rescue!!! Remind me to add a bounty to this one in a few days! — Fabby yesterday
And know, to handover paperwork, and hope I'll get an apartment
Bye

9:06 AM
@blade19899 Probably you must wait another day. The bounty delay is two days IIRC.

yeah and he said "days" :=)

@Ferrybig By the way, what is required to request access to Smoke Detector? I mean to run those admin commands from the Charcoal HQ.

@ByteCommander pay me 2500 dollars and Ill make it happen

@Ferrybig can I get access for say ... 500 dollars and get an invite for a 2nd person?

9:08 AM
You also take unicorn dollars?

@ByteCommander oh you think that was evil then see the line I posted after that D:

There isn't a real lengthy process needed to get access to smokedetector, but the best is if a room owner or a charcoal member says it in chat. Adding users is as easy as adding them to the correct list

Aha, okay. I'm thinking about applying to that...

he is using MY NAME :P

@Rinzwind time to change your name by deed-poll...

9:14 AM
@ByteCommander If you make a pull request, You most likely will be accepted, you are high rate of activity here, and have a high rep level

Yeah, thanks. I'll do that after having read the docs to see if it would be really useful for me at all.
I think it would be no problem, as I also know a few of the maintainers and even contributed a bit to the ChatExchange API...

The command list of smoke detector: github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/wiki/Commands

I know, I'm reading that already. ;-)

[ SmokeDetector ] Link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: That Bob his wallet I was also mention by Ava Olivia on askubuntu.com …

9:31 AM
@Ferrybig Is there a special reason why there are so many registered users on the tavern and the socvr, but only a few in the charcoal hq?
I'm wondering for what rooms I should apply and I'd prefer the CCHQ because I'm usually not active in any of the two other rooms...

@ByteCommander I have no idea, but I know that the tavern and the socrv are channels where smokedetector is a side business, compared to those channels, the CharcoalHQ is a quiet channel

Yeah. Additionally, almost my entire reputation score is from Ask Ubuntu, that means I have nearly no chat rep in the SO or MSE networks... :-/
Only a few hundred points.

@ByteCommander Who cares about those? AU ftw

@Ferrybig Or should I simply add my name to all three lists? Just in case I'd ever need them?

@ByteCommander Remember that your used id is different in every channel

9:36 AM
Yeah, I know.

I only added myself to the Charcoal HQ, and later to the socvr, I am not yet added to the tavern.

Well, I think I'll apply for CCHQ and Tavern for now. I never entered the SOCVR and also don't have enough SO points to actively review there.

kos
@Ferrybig I'd like to be added to the list of users as well, just to manually report spam in the rare occasions SD doesn't catch it. It's just about sending a pull request adding the correct user ID I have in the rooms I'd like to enable SD commands in, right?

I many people want to sing up for the list, its better to include them all in 1 somewhat larges pull request (that includes us all), so the people who can merge those aren't required to solve merge conflicts

kos
Sure. @ByteCommander want me to do that for both?

9:45 AM
I already edited the file for me but did not submit the PR yet.
Give me your IDs and I'll include you, okay? @kos
Or I just look them up myself.

kos
@ByteCommander Sure, thanks. Scraping my ID on the Tavern.

@kos Which rooms would you like? CCHQ, Tavern, SOCVR?

kos
@ByteCommander Just the Tavern, thanks. How do I find the room-specific ID though?

@kos Your chat profile link on meta.se is this: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/users/302251/kos so your MSE chat ID is 302251.

kos
@ByteCommander Ah so those are the "channels". Thought you'd have a specific ID for each room for some reason. Thanks.

9:59 AM
No. Only one for Stack Overflow rooms, one for Meta Stack Exchange rooms and one for all other Stack Exchange rooms.
@kos @Ferrybig I submitted the PR here: github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/pull/150

kos
@ByteCommander Thanks!

@ByteCommander Your build failed the checks because the trailing spaces here: github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/pull/150/…

>.<
That's a dumb test, isn't it?
Sigh...

I wish those spaces could automatically be removed during a git commit, I also have problems with them in my personal projects

Fixed that, now the tests should pass :P
They pass.

kos
10:12 AM
\o/

We only need to wait for someone with write privileges to the repository to merge them, then we can restart smokedetector with the new revision (I dont have write privileges)

kos
@ByteCommander BTW this one was likely a hit-and-run one: askubuntu.com/q/746972/380067
@Ferrybig Cool!

@kos Maybe, who knows... :) But this one doesn't upset me as much as askubuntu.com/q/746988/367990 - I wrote a really long and detailed answer on that.

kos
@ByteCommander AKA overkilling it. ;) Nice answer

@Ferrybig Do the privileged reply commands also only work in the command rooms or can I e.g. use the "delete" or "true" reply commands from here once I'm a confirmed user?

10:23 AM
@ByteCommander Smokedetector only "joins" the command rooms, in this room, it basicly enters the room, prints a message, and directly leaves again. Because smokey isn't technically in this room, it won't receive t'he command
But if you guys manage to delete a spam post within the 2 minute mark, smokedetector will automatically delete the message

Really? Nice.
Wasn't the limit 3 minutes once...?
And replying the "delete" command in e.g. the CCHQ, would that also delete the post here (if it isn't too old yet)?

user136984
@hbdgaf Oh dear... Someone actually complained about it on Meta? :D

user136984
@Seth: You talked about and reminded me of duck duck.

kos
@ParanoidPanda They complained about mine, but then they noticed yours and complained about yours as well: meta.askubuntu.com/questions/15144/…

user136984
:D

user136984
10:35 AM
But theirs was so bad, how could they have complained about ours?

kos
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They thought we did that to one-up them

Good morning :)

Hi @cl-netbox

Hello my friend ! :)
Hi @ByteCommander ! :) Hi @ParanoidPanda ! :)

10:43 AM
@cl-netbox: Hi! :)

@ByteCommander @kos Can you test in the Charcoal HQ with !!/amiprivileged?

11:01 AM
@cl-netbox Good morning.

What's happening?

@Zacharee1 What do you think is happening?

What do you think I think if I asked? :p

What do you think I think that you think that I think why you asked? o.O

kos
@Zacharee1 You're missing a "yo!" in your query

11:08 AM
@kos Yo! Whatup?
:)
@ByteCommander erm...

@ByteCommander Ah okay.
Guess who's back again!

@blade19899 me

kos
@Zacharee1 Hey bro! Just chillin' over here. Whataboutyou?

@Zacharee1 Hello.

@kos Going full Philly Italian, aren't you? :p
@blade19899 .olleH

11:14 AM
If it weren't for this new apartment I might actually get one of those

kos
@ByteCommander BYW !!/notify <chatroom_ID_number> <site_domain> is going to work only if <chatroom_ID_number> is a MSE chat room, isn't it? Namely, I won't get pings here.

@blade19899 MEGA is a good service
For $33/mo you can get 4TB of storage O_O

@kos You only signed up for the tavern, so Smokey only knows your MSE chat ID, I think...

kos
@ByteCommander This is the reply I got: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/4705053#4705053, I read it as you can be pinged only on MSE rooms regardless?

I've only found two issues with this SSD transfer fiasco that haven't worked out so far. The installer service won't install stuff, and I have to rebuild the search index
And I have an 834GB data partition now :D
This is taking a while to index, and I need to reboot

11:27 AM
@kos You can only get pinged in MSE rooms if you give it the command through the Tavern (which is on MSE). You only get pings to SE rooms from the CCHQ and only to So rooms from the SOCVR as it seems.

kos
@ByteCommander Yeah. :@ I'll wait for the next mass pull request to sign up for Charcoal HQ as well.

user136984
Nearly on 13k! :D

user136984
Though the means nothing at all, I've been on 12k too long! :D

user136984
Or at least it feels like that...

@SmokeDetector Ah, nice. It's cool that it includes the ping into the standard message. I guess I'll leave it like that until I got my Marshal badge. :)

11:35 AM
SmokeDetector pings people now?

user136984
@Zacharee1: I guess you can request it from the SmokeDetector creator unless it has a new feature of which I am not aware of...

@Zacharee1 You can become a privileged user and then command it to ping you in a room of a site.
That's what I just did. :)
in Charcoal HQ, 39 mins ago, by SmokeDetector
@ByteCommander Yes, you are a privileged user.

What's a privileged user?

@Zacharee1 me!
I feel like it at least

@Rinzwind You're a who I think

11:47 AM
But ... in this case it is a user that can tell smokey to do things ;-)

kos
@ByteCommander Some of those commands are just scary.

Wow, still indexing files
30,000 so far

12:14 PM
ah done

Oli
@ByteCommander You sound surprised :) Which question is that to? Checkio seems like it could be an insanely deep time sink.

Two answers so far today :D

user136984
12:31 PM
You know I really think that EOL versions after they have gone EOL should have a little notice popping up every so often (unless the user says they don't want to see it any more and they understand all its got to say) warning the user that unless they upgrade to a supported version that they will not receive any more updates including security updates nor support. And this could come up as a big scary warning so that people have to take notice of it.

user136984
What do you guys think of this and where could I suggest it?

@Oli That's checkio.com
(sorry for the ping load, I could not get the URL correct... damn https)

@ParanoidPanda Ask it on AU Meta, then if people suggest it, put it on SE Meta
I'll upvote :)

@ParanoidPanda Sounds reasonable, as long as the user still has the chance to permanently click it away. No force, just info.

It should definitely have some info on why unsupported releases aren't accepted here, not just that they aren't

12:36 PM
@ParanoidPanda I don't think there is a problem if they ask the question on U&L. Doubt they close for the OS being EOL

@Rinzwind but it should be on AU
They do not have an EOL question

user136984
@Zacharee1: I think slightly misunderstand what I mean, I don't mean on the site, I mean when the version of Ubuntu you are running goes EOL instead of it just giving you the upgrade option before it goes EOL, it should notify you of being EOL after it has gone EOL. Because it may not be clear to all users that a version's support can end so it would be good to point it out.

@ParanoidPanda ohh, I like that even more

kos
@ParanoidPanda Launchpad, project page?

user136984
@kos: But under which package? I can't suggest it under just Ubuntu because then nobody looks at it and a bot just tells me to put it under the correct package...

12:42 PM
@ParanoidPanda @kos it should probably start as a popup on AU, if it can. It could be a temp feature until the next version of Ubuntu.

@ParanoidPanda What about the release upgrader (however it's called)?
do-release-upgrade maybe?

user136984
@ByteCommander: That's the command for it, I'm not sure if it's the package though... I will check...

kos
@ParanoidPanda Didn't it work last time using bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug/?no-redirect?

user136984
@kos: Now my bug is just sitting there, nobody gets notified about it but the bot who came and told me that nobody would get notified about it until I filed it under the correct package...

user136984
I'm just hoping someone comes along and puts it under the right package now though that's not looking too hopeful, I guess if I put it under the wrong package someone will come and put it under the right one?

user136984
12:46 PM
@ByteCommander: The do-release-upgrade command does not seem to say which package it is in and it is not in its own one...

$ dpkg -S do-release-upgrade
ubuntu-release-upgrader-core: /usr/share/man/man8/do-release-upgrade.8.gz
ubuntu-release-upgrader-core: /usr/bin/do-release-upgrade

kos
@ParanoidPanda Not sure what would be the best practice when unsure. I guess you should post it to the "closest" package and in case let someone else (more expert) re-route it.

@ParanoidPanda So it's in package ubuntu-release-upgrader-core.

user136984
@ByteCommander: My system doesn't think that that's a package...

user136984
Though the command works.

12:47 PM
Then run dpkg -S do-release-upgrade to check.

Oli
@ByteCommander I don't have my headphone amp turned on, so didn't even notice :) Which question on there though. I can't find it. I've done a few questions there now so it'd be nice to get this one logged in before I forget it.
I might not have unlocked it yet.

Maybe, dunno. I'm actually playing empireofcode.com which pulls most of its puzzles from checkio though...

user136984
@ByteCommander: Oh! I made a typo! Found it now! :D

Oli
I'm a bit depressed by what counts as "elementary" though. I think I'm over-engineering things.
Or I'm just stupid, which is always a possibility. Hanlon's razor and all.

You mean some of the elementary things are too difficult?

Oli
12:58 PM
@ByteCommander Yeah. Not too difficult, but hard to do cleanly sometimes.
I really enjoyed the platform question because you can overengineer it nicely ;)

2
Q: Do NOT Use Links to Answer questions!

David Cole - Grammar PoliceI have recently noticed a trend going around, and to be perfectly honest it's pissing me off. What new users do nowadays is go to the main page, find a question that's been getting lots of views, and from there do the following: Go to Google. Type in the issue or any outputs into the search bar...

Oli
Oh goody. I can now "add my reaction" to things on Github. Looking forward to clients passive-aggressively adding angry faces to issue comments.

But you must unlock the "Ice Base" location first before you're allowed to solve that.

Oli
@ByteCommander Thanks. Few more to go :)

user136984
1:32 PM
@ByteCommander: Ok, I've filed a report under the ubuntu-release-upgrader.

Do any of the mods know why I cannot VTC duplicates?
This is all I get

user136984
@Terrance: You've been cursed by the High Council of Sacred Mods. :P

@ParanoidPanda LOL
@ParanoidPanda I can choose all the other reasons, but not Duplicate Of. I always get that message no matter what computer I am on, or browser that I am using. Strange.

kos
@Terrance It might be either have been deleted or closed already, have you tried refreshing the page?

@kos It's still there. askubuntu.com/q/747096/231142

1:39 PM
will apt-cache showpkg vlc show the dependencies of vlc, or show whether or not they are installed?

This has been going on for days now.

kos
@Terrance Oh.

@kos It is strange. Maybe the MODS don't like me clicking on Duplicates for some reason. :P

@Terrance there's a mod here now

kos
There are three right now, last one active was @Oli

@Oli Do you know any reason why I cannot VTC Duplicate questions? I can VTC any of the others just not Duplicates at all.

Oli
@Terrance If I were on your computer I'd look at the javascript console to see what was happening (some sort of error) when that loaded up but no, either which way, some sort of bug.
It's certainly not an official position users are put in (can close as things as long as it's not a duplicate). Have you tried turning if off and on again?
(ie reloading the page)

@Oli Maybe a bug on my account? I try from work, same thing. I try from Firefox, same thing. I try from Chrome, same thing. I try from a Windows system same browsers, same thing.

Oli
Just that question or others too?

@Oli It seems to be any of them I try

Oli
1:47 PM
Behind any sort of proxy (or crappy ISP that injects adverts into things)?

@Oli Trying again from a laptop just to make sure that I am not crazy

Oli
Tried https rather than http (or the other way around)?

Darn, the example just got closed. I will have to look for another one.

Oli
Can you access the close-popup data? Here's an example of the stuff that gets fetched: askubuntu.com/posts/popup/close/suggest-originals/…

@Oli OK, if I do it with https it works. =) I can live with that.
@Oli That is strange though

Oli
1:50 PM
Wonder if there's a proxy killing anythingwith popup in the URL
Harder to interfere with encrypted traffic, that's why I suggested it.

@Oli I do route a lot through my own router. I am running Privoxy on it that could be killing it. Let me see if I can whitelist this site.

If I do @username in a comment, will that summon the attention of that user?

Nope, I whitelisted it, and it blocked me from it. Haha. Maybe I need to disable that. Trying again.
@j0h Yes

Oli
@j0h Summon? Only if they're already active there in some way I think.
But yeah if they're there (in comment, or it's their post, or they edited (I think)), they'll get a notification.

Yes, editors are also pinged even though their name doesn't appear when you use @ and start typing.

@j0h No. The only way to do that is to leave a comment on one of those users' other posts and ask them to take a look. This is not something you should do often though. It can get annoying very quickly.

j0h
sure

Oli
Or tell us who and where they should be going and we can chat-summon them. Might be better than off-topic comments.

@j0h you could start a chat room with them
