Morning!

8:15 AM
G'day

8:34 AM
hey

8:47 AM
morning everyone

'morning.
Best Buy UK are closing down, no longer offering "price match" on stuff (like I did).

its a shame they didn't take off over here

only went once, felt an odd place

they've got a lot of stuff discounted at the moment, so it might be worth having a poke through the site and seeing if there's anything useful.
Also, I got trolled by PC World's website earlier, they were showing a 1TB Seagate external USB HDD for £40, but clicking on the link showed "product unavalible" :(

Damn, just got rid of a load of disks - I'd have sent them to you if I'd known

8:56 AM
yeah it felt odd but if the price is right...

wince ah well.
it's weird, online and high street prices are all over the place for Hard Disks.

they sure are

@tombull89 I noticed that, WTF is up with 2TB drives for 140 dollars?

example: eBuyer (online retailer) Seagate 2TB Expansion HDD - £149.54. Maplins (high-street), same device model, but 3TB capacity: £149.99...whaaaa?!

ugh mornings :-(

9:15 AM
We have codec developers who get DL580's with Quadro 6000 GPUs in them for CUDA dev work - these are not a bad price for what they are but if I wanted something a bit cheaper what would you guys suggest?

@Chopper3 My graphics card of choice would be the Radeon 6850...but no idea if that would be any good for encoding, plus it's probably a bit cheap.

need cuda/nvidia though soz

Dan
Morning
http://gchqchallenge.blogspot.com/

Well worth a watch for sheer curiosity

do they need to be quadras? Aren't they the high end workstation stuff? Would any standard "home" graphics card do it, all the nvidia range support CUDA IIRC

@Chopper3 ah sorry, I don't really use that so I can't say.

9:24 AM
no probs

morning @dan, @crb

@Dan Is this the code thing?

@RobMoir doubt it but it's the only cuda card HP support in a dl580

ah

Dan
@tombull89 Yep

9:27 AM
but it's about the code within the code though

Dan
@Chopper3 Indeed. I realise it's not my discipline, but it concerns me that I earn considerably more than the people they're trying to hire despite the fact I doubt I could do what he just did straight after watching the video.
There's always a Vocational argument with public sector stuff, but they wouldn't expect to get in an architect to build a new railway station for 25k

It does surprise me. I do get the vocational thing too - hey I'm in the public sector - but I'm earning a decent whack more than that and while I'm doing fairly well in my career path, I don't think its as difficult as what they're being asked to do, nor do the consequences matter so much

Dan
Exactly - I suspect they're very high pressure roles at the best of times

I guess its not a bad starting wage for a newly minted graduate, but still...

Dan
Serious (And not sarcastic) question - are newly minted graduates (Even CS grads) capable of doing that task do you think? Without prior knowledge of the end result

9:39 AM
I don't know, but I think that's the level they're pitching at. I'd have struggled with it, back in the day.

Dan
I suppose you're right, and they've not really spoken about the career path afterwards

hell I'd struggle with it now. Coding was never my favourite thing, and I haven't gotten any better at it by not doing it!

Dan
Though I did once look at a few jobs with some 'interesting' Government departments and I just couldn't make it affordable
Especially with London prices

I think it is the vocational thing though, you've got to want to do it.
@dan likewise and likewise

Dan
@RobMoir Very true. I suppose it's unfortunate that in IT, there's a wealth of comparison with the private sector. And even now, the private sector pays IT fairly well.
There's gotta be something very cool about working for GCHQ

9:47 AM
the coolest thing being that you can't tell anyone!

crb
morning all
re. the GCSE thing, I read a comment suggesting only people with experience with x86 assembler who recognised the magic in the first few bytes would end up being on the right track
I read the comment before I read the page, so I don't feel dumb for not having had any idea :)

Z600's with 560ti's seem like a good compromise

should be

10:22 AM
@RobMoir: but that also means you can't tell them how badly well they pay you

10:52 AM
@Chopper3 HSV300 controller can be found on which SANs?

11:18 AM
sorry, was away, that's an EVA 4400 controller iirc
can look it up but that's off the top of my head
yeah, 300 is the 4400, 340 is a P6300, 360 is P6500, 400 is the 6400, 450 is the 8400

Q: vnc on computer without monitor or video card

user105847Is it possible to install a vnc with a graphical user interface on a computer that doesn't have a monitor or video card? Work blocks facebook, and ideally I would like to install Ubuntu or Windows on the remote computer with the whole graphical user interface. Is this possible to do with like A...

/grumble grumble...

lol
I'd like to see vnc without a gui ._.

of course the best idea would be to run a VM with a virtual frame-buffer/GPU, that works just fine, but I'm buggered if I'm helping him get around another sysadmin's system

just for shits and giggles, i need to see if i can get it working over a text only browser ;)
and... it seems to work o0

Dan

I was always a fan of <strike>HTTP tunnelling</strike> boobies

Dan
@Chopper3 As we all are!

you mean "I was always a fan of HTTP tunnelling boobies"

Is there an FAQ for the chat functions - because I suck at it

not as far as i know
its three - before and after a word to strikethrough

Dan

Cool
I can do italics but that was it
*oooh*
---ooh---
haha

sometimes I like to use html, knowing it won't work but as a kind of joke - even if nobody gets it

we need a chat bot that sits in the room all day starring any comment that contains the word "boobs" or any variation, in order to stick to the room rule about starring any comments that contain boobs
3

Dan
Consider that comment starred

why thank you

that's what BartS is though right?

Dan

On a separate note, here is how I spent a day this weekend:

It really was a genuinely ace day

that is indeed marvelous

:-D

Dan
Immense
They'll be wondering what the hell

12:26 PM
If we're talking about needed easter eggs here, typing "os/2" should see the chat window ask you to insert 45 disks in turn, plus disk 1 after the first 20 and disk 2 after the next 20 then disk 1 after the last 5 again
2

@Chopper3 - thanks. and HSV200 is EVA6000 correct?

not that i'm still bitter about having to support os/2 or anything...

@SpacemanSpiff yep - the 200-B was the 6100

@RobMoir: yeah, windows 95 was only 25 floppies

12:28 PM
indeed

Any big limitations to a 4400?
I see a 96 disk limitation :O

My last windows and linux install was one thumbdrive ;p

12:44 PM
@SpacemanSpiff sorry, was away - is this one you've already got as the P6300 is the same price (to me anyway) and much more flexible
@SpacemanSpiff as for limits, well there's only really 2 x 4Gbps ports per controller - even with the 2x10 switch in front of it - and there's only 4 device ports too and the max luns created is 1024 (2048 on others) but generally they're fine, if you can go for CV v10.x and XCS v10 too - makes a world of difference

gotcha, at a customer site evaluating expansion/replacement options

ok, the P63/65xx are a nice replacement if you have a lot of EVA skilled peeps on the ground - love the 3par kit but their cheapest kit is more expensive than even an 8400

4400's are entry-level right?
a little inflexible, not very expandable, already EOL?

yep, not EOL just yet though
their biggest problem is they use an older type of shelf and disk, most new HP stuff sticks to one/two types of shelves and regular SAS disks, the 4400 (and older EVAs) use different shelves and specific disks (including the legendarily SHITE 1TB FATA disks that are about as reliable as my 16yo son)

1:00 PM
LOL...
righton, understood.
Looks like they have the 400GB FC disks

they're fine - very reliable but as I say if you plan on adding a lot more then it might be cheaper to move to something more modern

out of space... deciding where to go, what to do, I don't think they know how its being used

g'day peoples

XCS 10 does initial thin provisioing btw - bit more controller-cpu expensive though but nice to have
hey

My wife's been sat opposite me all morning going through all manner of Christmas lists constantly chirping in asking if we should put 'Mike and Susan" or "Susan and Mike" etc. it's days like this I hate getting to work from home and consider how much quicklime I could get on short notice

@ChrisS Is that in the RFC?

@SmallClanger No reference off-hand. Just proper etiquette.

@tombull89: I have quite a few furry horror stories. Most involving vast quantities of pr0n.

I'm amazed that there's actual protocol for this stuff.

I'm suprised there's no SO site for etiquette ;p

I think etiquette is language/culture specific enough that it would be very hard to create an SE site around it.

A: How can I provide live replication of a Linux server?

SvenWWhat you need to do to reach your goal is dependent on the services you offer from the server. E.g., a file server has different requirements to offer a fail over than a DNS or LDAP server. Anyway, a guide to a complete solution is out of the scope of this site, but we can help with specific pr...

@tombull89 Cruise control for furry? Errr…

That's clearly not an answer, so I flagged it as such
-10 to me

@MikeyB This is Chopper we're talking about. So, normally, yes, but not in this case.

@MarkM Agreed.

Such bullshit
I'm back to 660 for the FOURTH time now

3:08 PM
You know the real b*tch of that too is that we've got one or two mods who are doing all the disagreeing. I can see their point occasionally when they disagree. But They're just flubbing it some time too. I've quit trying to flag things, it isn't worth the hassle.

@MarkM I may have flagged it as other->should really be a comment to the qestionn but I wouldn't have risked NAA

@Iain I don't understand the difference

@Iain NAA should imply either "Should be a Comment" or "Not even close"

if it belongs as a comment, it's not an answer, right?

"Should be a comment" should be an option. =]

3:09 PM
to me NAA means just delete this
NAA is very blunt and open to interpretation

@Iain Mods should remember the limited options. They're humans. People who are supposed to be part of this site.
If they aren't willing to put an ounce of effort into moderation then they shouldn't be doing it.

I asked on meta about it

Next time you get a user complaining of a slow laptop or machine, drag this baby out and make them suffer for a bit.

mods have also been instructed to accept all flags in good faith ... let me see if I can find the reference

@Iain Exactly. That's what I was failing to articulate earlier. We've got at least one who isn't, possibly more...

3:13 PM
@Iain thanks

@ChrisS I know I had one declined and I'm still 30 flags away from getting back to 750 :(

Not sure if I really like the fact that it's all secret now, which mod accepted or rejected a flag. I suppose in the general case it's better that way, but that level of anonymity is getting abused right now IMHO.

I don't think declines have ever been known have they?

I don't think so

you can usually tell who acted on a helpful by seeing who deleted/migrated a post
but I recently noticed that spam flags don't show that tnfo

3:19 PM
@Iain If the whole user account is blown away then "Community" deletes the posts. It's always been that way.

that would explain it

I also brought this up on m.so today

Q: Tweeting bad questions

MarkMI realize that tweeting questions by @serverfault (and other SE twitter accounts) is automated, but shouldn't questions with close votes not be tweeted? For example this is way OT for SF and has 4 close votes at the time of this writing. It had (I believe) two close votes when it was tweeted. ...

They tweeted that shitty laptop w/ VT question 4 minutes after it was asked

@MarkM similar things happen with the newsletter too. I really don't think the newsletter shows us off very well at all

@Iain I don't know anything about the newsletter

3:33 PM
@MarkM what (if anything) was the response on the decline ?

@Iain Generic
declined - a moderator reviewed your flag, but found no evidence to support it

wasn't me btw, been on a conf call

What about cases where the answer is completely irrelevant to the question?

@Chopper3 I figured it wasn't you

3:43 PM
someone's been a real dickhead with declines lately

@Chopper3 I very much doubt it was a Mod who is active in the site still... I think you're about the only one.

@Iain Hey, I had that one declined too!
" flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies, or an altogether wrong answer"

yep

Thankfully, I've only had two declines. That one, and one suggesting a migration.

Is it only mods that can decline flags?

3:45 PM
@tombull89 Yep
regular users can mark some as Disputed in /review
but that doesn't ding fw

@ScottPack That is an answer... It's just not answering the Question...

@ScottPack I've had 4 that one, one which I guess was a mistake on the mods part because it wasn't an answer and I resubmitted it and it was accepted and 2 I would argue if i could be bothered (both @ fw<500)

I've had a lot of declines lately that are shitty
at least 6
I've hit 660fw 5 times now

@ChrisS I flagged it as other->doesn't appear to answer the question asked and was declined for the same reason as packs

@ScottPack Both occur around 12-16:00 UTC?

3:47 PM
@ChrisS I think therein lies a perception problem. It meets the technical requirements for an answer, but it is also not applicable.
@ChrisS Let me check.

@Iain Not sure how helpful that really is, but it's not wrong.

In either case, I don't think either should have been declined, simply not acted upon.

@ChrisS Are the times listed the time that I flagged it, or the time that the flag was acted upon?

@ChrisS thanks for the final delete on that :)

3:49 PM
@ScottPack Good question... not sure.

wtf mib3 = time travel?

anyway it only a game

tbh there's very few flags I decline, if only because it's a pain in the arse to do so - far easier to just click 'helpful' but leave in place - plus to be honest most of the ones I ignore are people moaning about what you nice chat users say (or me) - which I leave 'cos you're my pals :)

@ChrisS Those were 1500Z and 1930Z. So who knows.

@Iain NP, should have +1 your comment before I did... more explanation for "why"

3:50 PM
@Chopper3 DAWWWWWWWW

@Chopper3 People whine about us? Qocksuckers.

yeah - I rarely act on supposedly rude comments left on shitty posts where they deserve far worse abuse. It happens a lot, "I put half a second into this question and everybody's calling me lame, I'll flag their comments while I have a wank and cry" - fuck 'em
2

@ScottPack First two stages of Loss/Grief: !. Denial 2. Anger.... So yeah, retribution follows logically.

I think I let one go through once because, I think it was BartS, just hadn't been nasty enough to the guy

@Chopper3 do him a favour...please.

3:56 PM
we buy DL580 G7's for our developers, for some reason they all refer to them as 'G7's, not 'DL580's, bit like saying my car's a '2010' not a 'Volvo' - they're driving me nuts, next time they ask for one I'm giving them a DL120, when they moan I'll say 'It's a G7'

Not exactly small though, are they, the DL580s?

I've got a few guys that keep saying things like, "joined to ADS" and "buddy server".

4:00 PM
there's a bunch of delete-able questions hanging around with 2 votes on 'em :-P

very flexible boxes, we just put a pair of cpus and 64 GB in them, loads of options to upgrade as we need and they take a quadro 6k easily, good PSUs etc.

@ScottPack "buddy server"?

@voretaq7 You know, in case one goes down the buddy can take over.

Is this the new redundancy system? server-buddies?

Isn't that what friends are for?

Q: NSFW proposal on Area51

kinokijufThere is a proposal on Area 51 that definitely does NOT fit with the family-friendly nature of StackExchange. I have flagged it for moderator attention several times, but it was ignored. (If it gets into production, I will boycott SE).

"Now every critical service pair up with your buddy server and practice crashing and recovering!"
"now now, NeverFail - you're not supposed to take your server-buddy down! That's not how this works!"

@voretaq7 I'm out of delete votes already
BTW the great delete the closed crappy questions game goes well over 500 gone with is >50% of what we started with

@MarkM For good reason too.

Spolsky just weighed in and crushed him too
Thats the end of that

Yeah, we're having an interesting discussion about it in the employee room.

@MarkM I quite literally feel your pain. I was thoroughly let down

Ironically, my workplace is blocking it under "Pornography and Illegal or Age-Restricted Activity List". Probably because it has "sex" in the URL...
also just had a helpdesk ticket: Title: printer problem. Description: As above. FML. FML HARD.

@Iain sniffle

@tombull89 Ever just want to respond with "LOL"
In my last job I used to dream of the day I could win the lottery and spend a few weeks getting more and more belligerent with my customers

@tombull89 Resolved. "Your L has been F'd. Hard."

4:17 PM
I facepalmed hard. I could go and take it out and say "printer? what printer? Oh, as you gave a me a lack of description, I gave you a lack of printer. Problem solved."
@Dan I do that. More than I should.

Dan
@tombull89 Problem is, I knew in truth I'd do one of two things. Never go back, or just leave with a blaze of abuse and hate
Good job I left, really, that place was burning me out :D

RE: area 51 NSFW thing - Of course, it depends on the domain decided for it. HankyPanky.Se or Shagoverflow would probably cause a bit more offense.

@Shads0 so se.xxx should be registered and all the NSFW stuff put there?

why not, it'd be a good place to put all our thoughts on users

4:25 PM
ShagExchange.xxx? sounds like some dodgey dating website.

@tombull89 That's dating.se

@Shads0 if that ever happened that would have to be [status-kill-it-with-fire]
I have to leave work now...although I expect by the time I get home it'll be mod-hammered into dust :(

@tombull89 Actually, I would love to see that just because it would be full of lulz

@tombull89 Naw, it's for people who collect shag carpet from all that bad 1960s/1970s porn.
@Shads0 DateExchange.com -- Sounds like somewhere you go to trade blind dates until you find one that doesn't suck!

@voretaq7 Can we have one of those for lusers?

4:30 PM
@Shads0 I suppose, but remember much like with the blind date thing you'd be picking through someone else's rejects... do you REALLY want rejected users?

@voretaq7 Never said I'd take the exchange, I'd just use it to get rid of them for free.
