@Ward Yeah, he is a bit 'strange'. Have seen him on a couple of thread tonight

Hi @pauska

hah I just flagged it Iain
and the question that the spammer just replied to

Morning all
I see you already spotted the spammer ;)

yeah, I've protected the 2 questions they posted on - both already had deleted spam

8:42 AM
@Ward yep 3 of the 7 are copy+paste from other copyrighted websites too

Q: Good free Helpdesk software?

codeulikelooking for good free or open-source Help Desk software. And by Help Desk Software I don't mean development issue tracking (which is slightly different), I mean software that is optimised towards tracking support requests from the user base of a small-medium business. So something like ZenDesk, ...

Off topic?

OT shopping imho

I'd say keep it as the close target for all the similar questions we get
what do we do when someone is just copy/pasting from other websites ?

I don't think he knows what he is talking about...
And half of those things are copyrighted...
The copyrighted ones: flag
others got a downvote

@ewwhite while its possible to construct a question along those lines that is valid (what should I look for in a...) which is what ought to have happened when it was re-opened, I voted to close as too localised the second time because it was turning into a shopping question with lists of various current models of server. The only way it could be more of a shopping question is if it peeled itself off the monitor and drove you down to the shop.

That NSFW M.SO thread is now at -44, (with 4 upvotes) and is the most downvoted, non-deleted question on M.SO.

nsfw?
you mean the xxx.se site from area 51?
We have superuser.com why not boneruser.com too

uh huh
not sure I've seen that

haha @Chopper3 commited :)
and Joel Spolsky ;)
a lot of SF people :)
and @voretaq7

well we're all interested in better relationships. Except that one guy, apparently.

Dan
BUT THE CHILDREEEEN
(Morning)

9:18 AM
Childreeeeen are their parents responsibility

9:34 AM
I think Joel's suggestions more than handle the worries raised

9:47 AM
I think the original complaint is "Won't somebody please think of my children."

Dan
100 years on and some people are still living with Victorian values :(

@Dan, but if children are exposed to frank and intelligent discussion of human sexuality, they might grow up to be more rounded and less fearful. We can't have that.

10:10 AM
but its ok to talk about achievements for gross violent things in gaming.se

Human reproduction is a threat to us all. Murdering the right amount of electronic hookers to get an xbox achievement is totally fine

Dan
I love Coca Cola

@Dan that pious retard wanting to protect his kids will just end up with a bunch of freaks - none of us become adults overnight, it's a gradual thing and the idea that you can protect a child until they're 18 and then they find out about how the world works belongs in amish towns

Dan
@Chopper3 Too right, Chopper!

awww - nice little snowman icon!!!!!

10:21 AM
Someone ping me. I want to see!

Dan
@SmallClanger Snooowman!

@smallclanger little things...

@SmallClanger oy!

Dan
@RobMoir Spam!
D'oh, I suck

Bah, mine's still green.
Anyone used Rapport? I've had a couple of (non tech) people raving about it. It looks to me more like the appearance of security rather than being any genuine improvement.

Dan
10:52 AM
Is that the web security thing?
My bank provided a version which, for a time, they insisted you downloaded (Bugged you if you didn't) - I did and found it to be a pile of crap personally
but that was 18+ months ago

11:04 AM
yeah some of the banks seemed to go through a phase of insisting you had to use their chosen software
which is fun when you had to ring barclays and explain to the phone operator why your mac isn't running kaspersky antivirus (before they made a mac version of that, obviously!)

Dan
Haha

I'm with hsbc premier, I never do anything online, just call them up and >50% of the time you're talking to the same bloke

barclays at least use those pin sentry things, which might be a pain in the hoop if you forget it but isn't bad security idea as it goes

@RobMoir Yeah, my dad uses Barclays, he's got one of the PIN devices.

that's not too bad then chopper, I'm sure you still have to go through the security steps of course but you can build up a relationship with the guy then, just like old fashioned banking but over the phone

Dan
11:07 AM
I won't pay for Premier, but I've heard First Direct are good. I'm pretty lazy with it, though. HSBC banking online is okay, but I'm irritated by the new Vasco token

what would be nice is if they gave you two, one for the briefcase and one for home, but I do like their idea

Dan
Like most, I've used plenty of tokens in IT but the HSBC one just seems naff

I have a token thing for personal, business and for [main client] access - so I'm carrying them around like dog-tags

Dan
But then again, the public are pretty bad at banking security so I can't blame the banks as they're losing out big style

yes, I'm cool with the idea of banking using tokens but some of the schemes seem badly done
I don't even mind the barclays fraud prevention too much though it can be annoying
it would be nice if they could 'learn' that you often make certain payments to certain companies and not trigger on them#

Dan
11:11 AM
I've been taking huge advantage of the 10p Android scheme - I keep expecting a call!

@Dan Haha, same. I got Minecraft PE and Captain America (although it requires a large seprate download too)

Dan
@tombull89 I've been downloading things I don't even need, just because....y'know, 12p!
I'm liking SwiftKey X, though.

I've had two new credit cards recently. Both times it's been hell setting up the on-line access. No-one uses username/password any more. Halifax wants a numeric user code (stored in a cookie), a 6-digit PIN and 3 letters from a 'memorable information' word that can only be alphanumeric.

Dan
Yup

@Dan Oh, that's neat.
@SmallClanger I'm with Halifax too...for me it's a username, a password, and three letters from a passcode that you have to select from a dropdown box.

Dan
11:17 AM
My favourite bank story is when, a few years back I went to Italy. I'd got a HSBC Credit Card and a HSBC Debit card, both linked to the same account. I wanted to use the Debit Card, ideally, but didn't know if it would work. Well, I tried to withdraw some cash on Day 1 and it came up with a message in Italian and wouldn't let me.

No drama, I used the Credit card for the next 8 days! As in, every single penny went on this credit card.

I got back home, went to get some Petrol and my debit card was declined! I called HSBC and they told me Fraud Protection had picked up an attempt to withdraw
@tombull89 Yeah, the personalised predictive text is clever. I let it read in Facebook and my text messages and I was able to compose a morning next to the missus using only the first letter of each word :D

@Dan lol, what? I've only got a debit card (with £20 overdraft, "just in case"). What was scary is that they would have offered me a credit card with £5000 allowance.

Weird. I'm forever getting phone calls about payments that have terminated in Murmansk or somewhere. I used to buy from Komplett back when they existed. They take their payments in Norway. Egg never got used to letting me buy from them.

Dan
When I was 18 and a friend and I decided randomly, mostly while bored and a bit drunk, we were going to start our own business. We were still in college, but were able to walk out of HSBC with a credit card and an overdraft...

And they wonder how the recession happened!

A few years ago I was offered a credit card with a limit about 15% more than my annual salary. Things have definitely calmed down a bit since then.

Dan
@SmallClanger Jeez!

11:29 AM
That was the age of 110% mortgages. Free money for everyone!

Dan
@SmallClanger I so regret not buying a house, any house, when you could get 100% mortages

The worrying thing is, that £5000 is about 1/3 of my current yearly salary. That's a) scary and b) dangerous.

Dan
@tombull89 Yep! I'm all up for personal responsibility, but that kind of percentage is debt with very few ways out of
I have no idea how we'll save the 20% required to get a house

@Dan Don't blame you for not going that way, though. My wife and I bought ours about 12 years ago and I had massive reservations about it. I thought there was no way house prices could stay this high for much longer.
Shows what I know...

Dan
Madness, though isn't it
I don't mind renting in principle, but I worry for the future and retirement etc

11:38 AM
Definitely. We never bought our place as an investment, so we didn't much care which way it went.
But there's too many people relying on this bubble for their retirements. That was always going to end badly.

Dan
@SmallClanger Thing is, you know you're buying something every month which is kind of like a big savings account. Albeit with risk. Wheras, we rent, which means that money is just "dead" every month
The only things we have are our 2 classic cars - and they're not going to pay for a retirement! Mind you, they might in 50 years if we keep them clean

and rents have scaled with property values, too. I assume you're stuck in that "Priced out of the entire property market by a factor of at least 2" hole that lots of people are in?

@Chopper3: You around mate?

I am for you

<3

Dan
11:42 AM
Yep! Thing is, even if we could save a £1000 every single month (Which would mean doing NOTHING else, basically) it'd still take us the best part of 2 years to come close
And that'd be one shit way to spend 2 years

I've gotten budget approval for another server next year.. I'm thinking about speccing it up to its teeth to both rape the new SQL licensing and being able to provide VDI

ok, what part of next year?

hopefully before Q3.. the new licensing scheme goes into action in june afaik
So it'll probably be a DL380 Gen8 filled up with ram and atleast 2x8core.. but does it support graphic cards with those perky power connectors?

the Gen8's are out in ~may
GPU support for DLs is an odd point, what do you need?

hmm.. I'll have to push our reseller for a preorder then
Well, we're playing/toying with the idea of using VDI for some of our users instead of buying them beefy desktop's, but we need to support RemoteFX
we dont have enough VDI usage (or potential usage) to justify buying blades etc

11:45 AM
ok, but for top-end 3D or decent quality stuff? not seen a HCL for remotefx

nah just decent quality.. enough to render aero and whatever else that uses it (like streaming)

Then a Radeon HD 6670 would be good as it's the fastest GPU that doesn't need extra power other than off the bus
plus they're not entirely shit either

afaik most people buy entry/midrange quadro cards.. I know some of them doesnt need extra power, but they're not exactly superduper fast

Dan
@SmallClanger :(

11:47 AM
hahaha

hm.. do you know if HP supplies that card? We're a bit careful about maintaining warranty/support
@SmallClanger haha wonderful

Mind you, 2nd hit of "define a scottish person", too.

@Chopper3: When I think about it.. GPU performance isnt really the culprit, its more about the video memory.. 2x1920x1200 on remotefx needs 308MB alone

hmmm....well if you want lots of gpu memory you're bestt going with a quadro then, only problem is the power requirements
there's no free molex's in the Gen8 iirc
it's why I go 580 for GPU stuff, the 300's aren't really built for that sort of thing - how about tesla?
are they supported?

probably not, as this is directx

11:51 AM
@Chopper3 Is it the Quadro 6000's you use in yours? £3.5k on a graphics card?!

true - no frame-buffer
yep, it's the only card HP support in the 580
of course that's list

any idea if HP supplies the HD 6670?

no but it'll support any old card (pny etc.)

yeah, im just afraid of breaking warranty
like overloading the pcie bus or something like that

they do let you put non-HP PCIe cards in you know :)
and there's 1GB models of that card too
they can't seriously, HP massively overengineer their kit, it'd take a couple of them easily

11:57 AM
yeah I'm trying to find a low-profile 1GB version without the enormous heatsink AMD put on it

loving this;

@Chopper3 woah. what's that running on?

no idea, but I bet there are driver issues

Looks like an eyefinity setup.

hang on...each panel is a screen? eeeeeek.

12:00 PM
24 monitors, so probably 4 x those 6xdisplayport GPUs - bet the frame rate SUCKED
ah, matrox do an 8-display card, so three of those
but they're crap at 3d

the resolution isnt that big tho
look how large the minimap is

it looks like that thing in the last batman film

I'd guess each panel is only running at 640x480ish.
Frame rate wouldn't be too bad, then.

12:02 PM
directx can only deal with an 8192 frame iirc anyway

You could run Minecraft on it and use the heat it generates to heat water or drive steam turbines.
Maybe not quite that hot...

@chopper3: looks like my dream is going to shatter.. the 6670's heatsink/fan is way too large

ballz

that nsfw site thing - if you get there from someone else's question on one of the SE sites it shows them as a referrer. I bet that guy who's upset about it is now their top referrer ;-)

12:11 PM
@RobMoir haha! I've just got an email saying the site is almost ready to go to beta.

good stuff
it would still be languishing if he'd never complained

sort of "reverse streisand effect".

yup. Does anyone want to point this out them in their comments or would that just be too cruel?

Dan
Hehe

interesting comment: Wow, I do not envy the eventual moderators of that site.

Dan
12:13 PM
Now, y'see, I do...

do you reckon there would be a tag ?
2

Dan
Tbh, I think every SE site needs that
I don't even do Linux, but I so want to respond to this:

http://serverfault.com/questions/340438/bugzilla-error-after-installation

With "Sounds like a bug. Maybe you should submit a report"
Is there a way to snap windows in Windows 7 to the side of the screen which is joined with another montior
Yes there is - use Winkey + [left or right arrows]

12:40 PM
Or just install linux over it of course

Dan
No ta

oh shit, only just realised today is 'Back to Karkand" day!!!!!

@Chopper3 WHAT!?

yeah, out today on 360 and pc
:)

@Chopper3 Damn, too bad I'm installing servers

12:48 PM
whereas I'll be crashing f-35c's soon

Anyone ever try making bootable USBs from Mac?

@Chopper3 playing on 360?
I tried to find a flight stick for my PC.. every single one of them is sold out on every single webshop in norway...

@pauska son on 360, me on pc
same here, got one on backorder
@Jacob sorry no, maybe ask on apple.se

@Chopper3 I do it all the time from windows, but the Mac screws it up for some reason

I know you can boot xserves from ipods

12:54 PM
@Jacob Easy
Make an journaled parition on your USB
open up the DMG
then restore the partition and choose the mounted DMG
done

@BartDeVos It's an ISO...

Stays the same
:%s/DMG/ISO/g

@jacob You could go the multiboot route. pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator (That's a windows option, but it's just a Syslinux/Grub-based setup.
Once it's installed, you can drop ISOs on to the USB, edit them into grub menu.lst and they're ready to go.

@SmallClanger I'm going to take a windows box back and use that/unetbootin

erm...this new proposed pair of buildings in Korea strikes me as a little sick perhaps? dezeen.com/2011/12/08/the-cloud-by-mvrdv

1:00 PM
The other thing you have to remember is that the ISOs need to be contiguous on disk. You'll need to keep a decent defragger on hand if you chop and change images a lot.
@Chopper3 A bit yeah. New York-based architects, too.

Still waiting for bits to build my new machine, current one can't handle BF3...so I've gone back to BF2142.
I could get it on 360, but I think Battlefield "belongs" on PC.

@tombull89 I agree, can't do FPS's with a 360/ps controller, son can but I need a mouse/kb - still shit at it but at least I can try

@Chopper3 I physically need controller \, mouse/kb is a nogo

I just found the wonderful little tool.. "USB Image Tool"

1:12 PM
@Chopper3 Games like Halo:Reach I do on the 360, because they're only on that platform, but I way way way prefer FPS on PC.

it's freeware, and creates device copies of USB sticks
great for making copies/backups of esxi sticks, image sticks for thin clients etc

@Jacob it's an age thing, they didn't exist when I started gaming

Although my laptop is coming up to three years old this weekend and my desktop was a bit of a "budget" build from Maplins.

I was a keyboard-turner until Quake 1. Been mouse/kb since. I can manage controllers in single player games, but I've got no chance on-line.

Dan
@tombull89 I refuse to do desktops now

1:15 PM
@SmallClanger: Try flying a jet in BF3 with mouse/keyboard
It will probably feel like the first time you stopped keyboard turning
@chopper3: you need to add me on bf3, pauska is the name

will do, think I'm chopper3, bit full of a cold today, plus dealing with the fact that my fencing turned to matchwood last night in the storm

Dan
RIght, it would seem I'm now in charge of VMware View R&D

there was a time when I used to play that whole PC-hardware-catch-up game (back when alienware were independant) but it got so pointless and expsensive - now I just bootcamp my macs with W7 and make do with that

Dan
@Chopper3 I purchased an XBOX. I'm not a console gamer by any stretch, but it's nice being able to pick up games without worrying and or thinking

@Dan that's the one vmw product I've consciously kept out of of - although there are questions about it in the VCAP exam
@Dan oh I love that about consoles, playing lego HP 5-7 with son at the moment and it's great for that but I just can't do fps's with those controllers

Dan
1:23 PM
@Chopper3 To be honest, we're so much a Citrix shop that I can't see us ever going out of our way to sell it, but we should give it a chance

I'm told that if you throw out everything from citrix and do a 100% vmw view thing and don't care about the cost then it kicks citrix in the twat but not everyone can do that

@Dan: Same here.. 95% of the users are on RDS. There are however some people I'd like to throw into VDI - like financial dept who needs their own PC's for doing jobs that would otherwise kill a RDS server
@Chopper3 That depends.. there is more work with VDI, as you need to deploy software etc

I've always been very good at avoiding work that involves actual end-users, not only are there lots of them but they moan, are frequently wrong and you end up getting paid less - advantage me!

Dan
When I say Citrix, I mean XenDesktop - so there's more of a comparison there.

@Dan you use XenServer?

1:26 PM
@Chopper3 alright for some ;)

Dan
@Jacob We do - though I'm not fantastically familiar. I can set it up and administer it to a degree but I'm fairly new to it

@Chopper3 Users spoil everything.

@Dan Have you ever had any 6.0 installs freeze on you?

Morning all.

Dan
Ah, we've not rolled out 6.0 to the wild yet. Though we haven't had any issues with our Dev boxes
I'll be honest and say I find it a bit of a flaky product, though

1:29 PM
@Dan If VMware wasn't so expensive I'd go with that

I tried to lab with xenserver, but I quickly turned away.. it just felt.. weird compared to vmware

I can't use the default button layout modern game console use. Usually the game will let you reconfigure the controller to a legacy mode though. I'm old school; use one stick for look left/right and move forward/backward, the other stick for look up/down and strafing. Up/down is inverted too...

allthough I'm pretty sure we'll switch over to Hyper-V when Windows 8 arrives.. there is much money to be saved (since we're already licensed with datacenter on our hosts)

Dan
See, I've not got on fantastically with HyperV
But it's not something we've pushed at all, so beyond messing in a lab that's my only exposure. I know the guys have done a couple of installs, though

only just read about badoo.com - never heard of it before somehow (being a fat married bloke in his 40's) - is it very popular with all the cool kids?

1:31 PM
I suppose I'm being overly nice to that guy.

@pauska I'm very much looking forward to Hyper-V 3; the RAM limit is starting to hurt right now.

@Dan HV is just compromised, someone at MS told me they bought the wrong company to do it (Vermillion iirc), they should have bought Xen and that there's a huge push to totally rewrite it from the ground up

Dan
@Chopper3 Intriguing - one to watch then

@Chopper3 never heard about it. It's not like we need another social network.

@Chopper3 HV was developed in house. You must be thinking of Connectix, the company MS bought to get Virtual Server.

1:33 PM
Badoo is "like a chat room, dating site and picture rating site disguised as a social network." and In a peer-reviewed study, it was given the lowest score for privacy among 45 social networking sites examined.
Well, I'm out there then.

Dan
Nice

VS was fundamentally limited in a lot of different ways; HV was a complete rewrite because of that.

@ChrisS I know about connectix, bought their windows-on-mac thing before they were bought, no HV was bought in - I'll find details
Think it was Kidaro iirc

No, Kidaro had Med-V and some related stuff. Nothing to do with HV.
MED-V was based on Virtual Server technology too...

/me grabs popcorn

1:38 PM
ah ok, maybe wrong then, I'll ask this MS guy when I see him next but he said they'd bought it in

I freely admit I could be wrong about HV being developed in-house... Just not those companies; and would be the first time I've head of it.

just read the featureset of HV3.0, would like to see how good their virtual switch is
if it's better than vmware's vswitch, i doubt it

probably not
the question you really need to ask if it's good enough
cause the cost savings says so.. atleast in my head

Their aim is not to be better than VMware. It's to be 99% of the requirements that 90% of businesses want in a hypervisor. Then to give it away free.
They want to destroy VMWare by killing their value model.

but what about the management cost?

1:44 PM
@Chopper3 You're in that 10%.

btw I love that vmw have competition, saving me lots

@pauska - good points!

@Chopper3 as in time consumed or the actual management software/license?

@Chopper3 Competition would be good; another company trying to annihilate your value model... It would be anti-trust all the way if HV Server wasn't free.

for us with 5-8 hosts it's a no brainer.. for shops like yours then its a different game

1:45 PM
their version of vcenter

stuff like distributed vswitch is just nonsense for us, but gold for you

@pauska Both more likely than not.

SCVMM is much lower than vcenter last time i checked
but remember that hyper-v is free, so you gotta calculate the costs a bit different

@pauska It doesn't have all the same features though.

we don't use them - in fact I'm no expert, our support org would sooner not have VC and treat every server independently - they're very slow and basically shit

Dan
1:46 PM
Do any of you guys use RES profiling?

You can get vCenter cost down, lots of "deals"

I think by the time you add up a feature comparable suite the price tag would be more comparable too.

:269803 thats only for new purchases

98% of all our VMs are OEL (Oracle's RHEL) so HV just isn't an option

Dan
@Chopper3 Wait, you don't use VCentre at all?

1:47 PM
yeah I understand Chopper, not everyone fits in one bucket

oh we do, by god do we, we have 300+ licences, but our support people are just dinosaurs

Dan
Oh right!
But...it makes their job easier, surely?

they made a huge fuss about us moving to esxi because they couldn't install vintella to allow for AD-based logins even though we told them there was no need

@SpacemanSpiff: The thing is that 99% of our VM's are windows, so we license the servers with windows datacenter. That means that we can use Hyper-V of no cost (like everyone else can), and skip licensing of the guests. The only thing we need to pay for is the management of the hyper-v hosts, which is under half the price of vsphere enterprise + vcenter combined over the years. "SA" with vmware isnt exactly cheap.

Got it...

1:49 PM
morning

damn this 'Karkand's taking all day to download

In case anyone is keeping track, the NSFW guy on m.so is at -45

I wonder if EMC are going to announce their "VAAI" support for Hyper-V 3.0..

The question is actually +4/-49

haha

1:51 PM
Has anyone else listened to Ivan Pepelnjak's virtual networking stuff?
I got work to pay for the subscription, I've gotten alot out of them

Nope, but it looks somewhat interesting

some are 4+ hours long
the discussion regarding the packet trombones of virtual networking appliances is really good, forget which one is in there

anyone know what constitutes a rejected migration serverfault.com/tools/posts/migrated/stats ?

@Iain Maybe when it's closed within x minutes?

@Iain Closed within something like 3 days of arrival...

Dan
1:58 PM
Can anything be done with this one to clean it up:

http://serverfault.com/questions/340462/program-files-x86-redirected-win-2008-r2

In its current form it's all but useless I'd say, but a reword may help?
