@Leathe Choose? Install?
Haven't you heard? Microsoft wants you to think everything's in "the cloud" now

@Bob Yes, that is correct.
Wow, my backup was 1.2TB, no wonder it took so long

Bob
1:22 AM
@qasdfdsaq "Option A or B?" "Yes"

@Bob A

Bob
Ah. I still don't quite understand how that works, but ok.

@Bob Last time I traveled to Asia I was Asian, and now I'm not?

Bob
Yea, I don't quite see how the "I was Asian, and now I'm not" part works. Is there an un-Asian conversion somewhere along the line?

Yes.

1:26 AM
Oh cool, I'm flying tomorrow too

Bob
Ah.

Adopting British citizenship requires renouncing of Chinese citizenship

Bob
Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Or rather the Chinese disown you if you take any other citizenship

Bob
I've always considered myself Asian (background), though I've been an Australian citizen all my life.
I'd still say I'm Australian first though.

1:28 AM
I want to leave my compooter defragging and backing up all in one go. I have ultradefrag, Defrag -B, and myDefrag. Also have clonezilla.

Yeah, in terms of ethnic background... that doesn't change. but as far as legal/nationality/citizenship goes, I aint no Asian no more

Wonder what the best plan to backup+Defrag would be. I have more than 100 hours to leave my computer unattended to do this.

Can't think of anything you can do on a standard PC that'd take 100 hours
Unless you're running your backup through 7zip at Ultra++++ compression

Well it won't take 100 hours

Wow, even refreshing Windows failed.
@DavidPostill Thanks! Funny thing was, I realized just after sending that message that I was on a Windows computer xD

Since it's unattended, I can't boot media, and I can only boot Windows by doing WOL via my home server.

Bob
Oh yea. You in-flight @qasdfdsaq?

@Bob No
British Airgays have no in-flight WiFi

Bob
Ah, I just scrolled up a bit.

And remote access would be from like 500 miles away

1:34 AM
Seems like they're one of the few EU flag carriers to still have no WiFi

WiFi meaning spotty satellite Internet at exorbitant prices?

It varies. There's many different providers with different levels of service.
Norwegian has it for free on their Dreamliners, one of which I nearly flew on
But I didn't have time to get a transit visa for India

Last time I read about the Dreamliner, it was still having problems

Interesting. My laptop's GPU appears to have stopped functioning.
Nah, looks like the driver for the USB graphics adapter broke it

Bob
o.o

1:48 AM
Apparently it's a common enough problem, sort-of. It's known the driver breaks W10, and their documented resolution is to use system restore to remove it...
Apparently it causes blank screens for lots of peopel
For me it just breaks my NVidia GPU
Lol yep, that was it
Some sort of LCM WDDM Proxy service :-/

Unlike my DSLR, the GPS on Nikon cameras supports A-GPS for faster acquisition. Get the A-GPS data here: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/112.html
A-GPS data expires after 14 days, but the file on the Nikon website is updated daily.
Of course, the best results are attained if you keep the A-GPS data as current as possible.
!!/wiki Assisted GPS

Assisted GPS (abbreviated generally as A-GPS and less commonly as aGPS) is a system that is often able to significantly improve the startup performance, or time-to-first-fix (TTFF), of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. A-GPS is extensively used with GPS-capable cellular phones, as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 requirement to make cell phone location data available to emergency call dispatchers. == Description == Standalone/self-ruling GPS units depend solely on information from satellites. A-GPS augments that by using cell tower data to enhance quality and precision...

Dammit. Unplugged my laptop while under heavy load and managed to trip the overload protection on it. The battery now claims it's discharged when it's not.

I've got it hooked up to a load external to the computer and I'm discharging it fully outside the computer. That should bring the battery's fuel gauge back to normal.

._.
I'm an idiot
I'm trying to backup my dad's system using his hdd directly... when its faster for me to mount it on my desktop

Also, my Thermaltake BlacX hard drive dock just died with a faulty power switch. I'm going to have to replace it soon.

@bwDraco heh, I need to get something like that eventually
I just keep putting it off since its a super super rare thing

@JourneymanGeek Ah gotta love cheesy asian infomercials

@qasdfdsaq that's a taiwanese news channel ;p
hm
Anyone know if the metro/modernui mail client syncs settings between systems?

4:10 AM
Close enough

@JourneymanGeek are you logged in to Windows with the same Microsoft Account on both systems? if so, yes, though there may be a setting to disable it anyway
by default it should sync

@allquixotic I want it to
(Moving my dad over to an SSD and windows 10. Would save me some time since the backups are taking ages)

thanks
(god I hate old XP installs)

@JourneymanGeek Why? Still better than Vista!

@jpaugh this one has not been wiped in years and is horribadly slow
Also, I skipped vista

@jpaugh Fresh XP builds probably fly
this is... kinda crusty and old, like a year old bagel under the fridge.

@JourneymanGeek, Well, that's where I keep my bagels! Good luck with Win10 :-)

@jpaugh done it on nearly identical hardware before.

A: Is the CPU active in Sleep mode?

BobDavid's excellent answer is correct for traditional machines, and Windows versions prior to 8.. However, Windows 8 introduced a new sleep mode for low power devices (Atom-based tablets, etc. This is known as InstantGo/Connected Standby. This is the default "sleep" mode when you turn off the scree...

Just posted.
I'm not really happy with it, because I can't find any references clearly setting out the difference between "S0i3" and S1 or S3.

@bob So it's mostly for tablet like devices?

Bob
@DavidPostill Yep. Needs special hardware support. Typically found in tablet-class SoCs.
I don't know of any mobile or desktop chipset that supports it.
So you'd find it with Atom and Core M.

That'll be why I never heard of it. Never owned a tablet (yet) ;)

merry xmas, colleagues

Bob
3:16 PM
Hm. Apparently the Surface Pro also has it with their i3/i5/i7 models.
Looks like all Haswell CPUs do but the rest depends on platform support.
So most laptops still wouldn't, probably.
@DavidPostill Heh, some low-power laptops probably support it too.

@Bob Nice answer. Complements mine perfectly.

Bob
@DavidPostill Thanks.
Found the flag in the ACPI ref. Added that too :)
Hm. We have § for "section". Is there a symbol for "table"? :P

3:31 PM
"Some SoC systems support a low-power idle state known as Modern Standby. In this state, the system can very quickly switch from a low-power state to high-power state, so that it can respond quickly to hardware and network events. Systems that support Modern Standby do not use S1-S3."

Bob
@DavidPostill Yea, I've been there.

Ah, OK

Bob
It's a short summary of the other resources I already linked.
> Systems that support Modern Standby do not use S1-S3.
That's useful info though. I skimmed over that.
Anyway, I've already edited that last sentence.
@DavidPostill Added that last sentence too, for completeness.
I love how they've given it at least three different names -_-
"Connected Standby", "InstantGo", "Modern Standby"
It's like their documentation writers go "Hey, what short phrase/word describes this? I should look it up... nah. Oh, I know!"
@DavidPostill Oh, didn't notice you included wakeup times in your answer. I was looking for that!
Turns out "S3 wake up time" is a rather useless search term :P
But, yea, that's a great comparison (for why DRIPS is different from S3). "up to two seconds" and "two seconds or more" vs "less than 100 milliseconds".
Ah well, I'm out.

lets make up a new name for this , that people will have to spend an hour figuring out what it means. its not sleep+hibernation it is hybrid sleep, it is not Partial-hibernation or system-hybernation it is hybrid-shutdown

3:49 PM
@Bob Soon be time for your Xmas dinner. You having a barbie?

Bob
@DavidPostill had a bbq yesterday (eve)
probably not doing much on the actual day, funnily enough

Not BBQ weather here :/

Bob
lol
almost wasn't here either tbh
was pretty rainy the last few days

"Met Office warns of 80mph winds and torrential downpours over Christmas holidays as dozens of flood alerts issued for devastated regions "
" Gales and torrential downpours will batter Britain on Christmas Day, bringing up to four inches of rain to already-soaked regions - and new risks of flooding.

A fresh band of stormy weather will hit at around 3pm and is not expected to subside until midnight on Boxing Day. "

Bob
ouch

3:57 PM
No walking off the Xmas lunch then ;)

Bob
@DavidPostill if you can still walk after, you obviously haven't eaten enough :P
Isn't that the point of giant Christmas lunches/dinners?

4:21 PM
I dont get the suggestions about cookies being the way to "secure" the (open) captive portal. doesnt that immediataly assume a browser? cookie-browser. since when is the only thing a person connects to in todays world a browser? Pop a cell phone and its bloody apps onto the web and many of them will (at least try) to connect , before you have a browser even opened.

Bob
@Psycogeek Actually, modern phones (Android and Windows at least) will detect a captive portal and notify you, with a suggestion to launch a browser to log in/accept.
As for how auth works after the login, I don't know.

My ISp here uses that Shiv and I do not really like it at all.
A) it is completly open, so stuff tries to connect to it, it is like its own SPAM, that wasnt the neighbors open share :-) that was a bloody trap

Oh ffs
After days and days of writing to do and what to pack lists to make sure I didn't forget anything
I took my smartwatch off while washing the dishes, and forgot to bring it.

Bob
O_O
ouch.
That really really sucks

Not to mention, I realised when I was in the taxi, and had enough time to go back and get it
But I didn't realise until I got to the airport, that the taxi only took 10 minutes and not 20
So double derp.

4:29 PM
B) I could percieve that any Van parked in the area , could clone the web page of the ISP auth, setup a wifi called comcast007 and proceed to grab the users accounts (both user name and pass) as they attempt to authenticate with it 15 times

Then I realised after checkin I still had time to go back and get it. But only AFTER I went through security, and can no longer exit

@qasdfdsaq Moral of the story - buy a dishwasher ;)

Lol, I would already have if I had the choice
Not enough space in the kitchen, plus its a rented flat I don't plan on staying in long

Or marry one ;)

Also airport wifi sucks in the UK, but I'm not really bothered about that

Bob
4:32 PM
If you're staying for a while and someone else has access to your home, and you really want it ... maybe ask them to mail it to you? Risky though.

Buy another one duty free. Then sell one of them later ...

Bob
Do they sell electronics at duty free?

Or keep it as a spare when you go swimming and forget to take it off.

Bob
I only remember seeing alcohol and cigarettes :\

@Bob Usually

4:33 PM
Yeah tons of 'em

Depends on the airport.

Bob
@DavidPostill Most decent smartwatches are water resistant at least :P

There's even a Currys PC World in London

Bob
Huh. Interesting.

Honestly though I don't need it that much, but I had considered buying another one

Bob
4:33 PM
It's been ... four years? Since I last went overseas.
So maybe small electronics are more common now.

I remember buying a sony walkman many years ago in duty free.

C) the thing disconnects (instantanous non-damaging) for some reason (possible attempt at security) at regular 5 minute intervals which causes my phone to call out (because it talks) that it is connected again. so over and over again i get to hear "connected to comcast.487"

Oh even ten years ago they had it
They even had laptops and tablets and stuff recently
Though in '06 all I bought was a bunch of travel adapters

Bob
@DavidPostill We're more likely to just reclaim GST via TRS ("Tourist Refund Scheme") rather than buy duty free. Maybe that's why they don't have those stores here. Or maybe I just didn't see them.

Ah yeah I might try that in Singapore

@Bob One way I can think of that would work would be to have a mandatory TLS proxy through which everything is routed (even login).
But then you'd have to fiddle with browser settings and it'd be inconvenient, and you couldn't e.g. play games without a VPN (no UDP otherwise)

Bob
@allquixotic Does Windows even support SOCKS natively?

The airport VAT scam: Retailers told to come clean after being accused of pocketing millions from discounts on duty-free sales: independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/…

lol. yeah heard about that
@Bob No, but internet exploder does

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Hm. Interesting. I just realised I've never clicked "advanced" there before.
So theoretically any programs that use the system proxy settings would work.

4:41 PM
Assuming of course it's a protocol that can be tunelled through SOCKS. Which not everything can
Though at uni I did tunnel a VPN through SOCKS
Also this nice smooth 60fps I'm getting in STO seems to have the drawback of reducing my battery life to 1.5 hours estimated

Bob
@qasdfdsaq STO?
@qasdfdsaq Wouldn't anything that uses system proxy settings already do that? Given that SOCKS covers a superset of the other protocols you can specify a proxy for (HTTP, HTTPS and FTP).

Star Trek Online

Bob
The only question would be whether the program supports SOCKS at all. But whatever it's using the system proxy for should be able to go through it.
(I'm probably not making much sense here...)
@qasdfdsaq That's with the dGPU, yea?

Woohoo, up to two hours if I disable the GPU
Mind you, my phone is draining 5w from the USB port too

Bob
...that's not much better, if standard is 6.
Oh.

4:46 PM
I forgot to account for that
So maybe 3 hours with iGPU?

Bob
Ah well. Off to sleep. (maybe).
Have a good flight.

And my flight is boarding

Good luck, kerbal test pilot!

@DavidPostill you dont even buy a hamburger at our (american) airports, cost you $20 heck dudy free , the prices they are charging shops to setup in the airport , makes the taxation look cheap. If you do anything in an US airport other than sleep and wait for your flight , you should recognise that you could have rented a car, visited the city , gone shopping , and bought a hotel to sleep in for the same price :-) airport shops are for the busy executive flyer , who has more money than time.

Looking very dapper there @DavidPostill
The steam sale is a bit disappointing this Christmas... No hunts or silliness at all.

4:59 PM
@allquixotic Haha, thanks
Apparently I held up the plane because I wanted to finish my MMO missions in the departure lounge
Also I'm sure you''re not meant to be running a wifi hotspot on a plane, but two people are :-/
Apparently they have to de-ice the thing, and they can't do that until I'm on board :-o

lolwat
are you actively holding them up right now? get out there!

@Mokubai Thanks. My latest hat ;)

Eh. They wanted to leave early.
Gate isn't even meant to close for another 1 minute
(And I've been on board about 10 minutes)
Well that's retarded
My Galaxy S5 has to be manually switched to USB3 mode to charge at USB3 levels, but it automatically switches back to USB2 after 10 minutes, which then halves the charging speed
Also de-icing truck just got here, and they've just switched to APU. One minute before departure. NOT my fault.
And we're moving, gotta go.

5:24 PM
Heh, there's no longer any restriction about mobile devices during takeoff in the US

5:50 PM
@allquixotic Doesn't that depend on the airline? I can't imagine for example cabin staff having different routines for take off in the US vs the US.

@DavidPostill the US vs the US, eh? ;)
I can't imagine those two things being different either

!!s/US/UK/

@DavidPostill @DavidPostill the UK vs the US, eh? ;) (source)

Hmm. @allquixotic I meant "take off in the UK vs the US."
Maybe it's changed everywhere ...

that will help them find lost planes, when 45 cell phones are still trying to connect out of the wreckages

6:05 PM
@Psycogeek They don't normally get lost during takeoff ...
Ahh " The European Aviation Safety Agency in Germany has issued new guidelines
They state that passengers can use portable electronics, including phones and tablets, at any time during flights
Some airlines already allowed Wi-Fi to be used in flights, but the changes mean all flights in Europe can fly without the restrictions
Guidelines are effective immediately, but airlines make the ultimate decision"

the connects are to onboard cell systems (and wifi) I assume, as there are at least 2 companies pushing for (basically) tower install in the jet. Which i assume is why there is a big push to have the rules changed.

September 2014
Airlines will need to certify planes aren't affected by transmission signals
They will also need to equip their aircrafts with network connectors
People will still be restricted from making calls to prevent annoying others

I'm back, everyone!

If the stewerds of the airline stand up and say "you do not have to put your phone in airplane (airplane lol) mode if you do not want to, in all probablility it will not effect any aspect of the airline operation or communications" I wonder how many passengers would think that probability isnt good enough :-)

6:40 PM
Whoops. Almost wrote 'but big cars are penis length compensation'... to a shiny young lady which is very religious.
Would not have been the best choice of words.

Hmmm...
The lens on my new compact camera seems to be badly decentered, to the point where exchanging it is likely warranted.
19
Q: What is decentering?

bwDracoI have heard of a condition in imperfect lenses known as "decentering". What is decentering? When a lens is decentered, what exactly is wrong with the optical elements? What are its symptoms and how does it affect image quality?

The issue seems to be at its worst at the wide end of the zoom range.

7:02 PM
Well, is it typical for a compact camera (at least a midrange model) to exhibit uneven sharpness or vignetting?

it is typical for a compact model to not be as good as a SLR or DSLR , in many ways. I was figuring that the first thing you might have a fit about is when trying to capture a speedy thing, all the things that a compact can do to make that hard, like re-focusing before the shot lag between shots or even lag to take the shot.
some of that can be "fixed" with various settings, or use of the camera , like forcing manual focus, and useing multi-pic shots and all.
with such a large zoom range in the one you were discussing, the far ends of the total range of zoom may both be a little weak. like getting more bending at the wide due to quickly manufactured lenses, or loosing light capability at the far ends of the zoom, and it getting a bit soft at the super zoom also.
and cute names for lensing like Carl Zeuss (planet of the apes referance) , are just somone being paid for, or having designed the original idea, nobody is going to put $500 lensing in a $200 camera. just be happy that for the most poart the quaity and price is amasing. wouldnt want to have to make that at home :-)

7:19 PM
This is a Nikon. From what I've read, the lens on this camera isn't the best, but decentering is more a defect than a design issue.
Zeiss isn't perfect, either.
Corner softness is one thing, but if it's very uneven or if one corner is way darker than the rest, then you likely have a decentering issue.
I get that compact camera lenses are more prone to decentering than DSLR lenses because of the small sensor, but there are certain tolerances that pretty much every lens is expected to meet.

@bwDraco which model was it again?

Nikon COOLPIX S9900.

At stevesDigiCams one of the "Types" that seemed to have the worst "lensing" issues were the internal lens stuff, i avoided all of those.

The control layout is fantastic, but low-light performance is only average by today's standards.
Not exactly unexpected, but I expected more even performance with the lens.
I guess I'll accept it as a quirk of this particular camera for the time being.
30x zooms aren't exactly easy to get right.

that thing isnt exactally restrictive in the space alloted for lens, or cut off for lighting collection, just leaving the wide zoom range they use of it. What is the possibility for not using the far ends? like in wide is it going to a very super wide ?

7:30 PM
The lens goes down to 24mm (equiv. 135). The issue seems to be most pronounced at the wide end at close focusing distances.
This is not unusual for a compact camera.
However, the decentering still seems to be a bit excessive.
Field curvature at the wide end of the zoom and close focusing distances is usually a serious issue on compacts of this sort.
I'm wondering if anyone else can pitch in at this point. Will be back.

if you concider sending it back for a refund for exchange, could be you would also want to concider sending it back and "Not giving them another chance, to send you a badly made product" ? a chance to try something else. argg that is what they make B&M camera stores for.
Even at walmart i can tell a few things about a model before buying, actually before ignoring about 10 of them, that just didnt suit me.

@allquixotic There isn't here either, but it's still supposed to be used in flight mode
AKA you can use it but with radios off during take off/landing
Wifi/bluetooth/etc. can be used once airborne but mobile (GSM/CDMA/LTE/etc) aren#t supposed to be used at all

@qasdfdsaq they completely removed the cellular restriction in the US
you can use GSM/CDMA/LTE to your heart's content, even during the most stressful parts of takeoff and landing

Oh wow
Im old school so even being able to use a phone is novel for me

individual airliners or attendants might ask you to put on airplane mode because they don't believe the FCC's new policy or they're paranoid
the new policy doesn't require that passengers have the right to use their cellular baseband during all parts of the flight

7:40 PM
Probably cause I kept being repeatedly told off for having my heaphones on

it just removes the Federally-mandated ban on it

Anyway afk, I have hotels to book

most of the very mainstream carriers like Delta, American, Southwest and United let you use it now

also Heathrow airport wifi also stinks

lol

7:41 PM
1Mbps free service, 4Mbps if you pay
Meanwhile my phone does 300Mbps
Well OK, only 100Mbps in prasctise but stil

@allquixotic which (this IS america) could lead to a few obstinate people insisiting that they be able to, even if the airlines own policy does not.

Estonia had 20Mbps airport wifi 5 years ago...

landlord flew out southwest last week, they specifically announced to be in airplane mode then. luckily he even knew what that was ;-)

I bought another smartwatch at the airport. It was £20 off. Plan on selling it on Ebay once I get back.
I'm pretty sure it'd have been cheaper to take a taxi home and back to the airport, but meh. Too late now.
