English Language & Usage: Multi-Layered Discourse Room

Well, my Chinese teacher (who happens to be a white guy from new york) was trying to put forth the notion that it's illogical in English. But I submit that it's just as logical to describe the action as it is to describe the action in terms only of the object. Maybe more-so.

Q: Difference between "read," "scan," and "skim"

What is the exact difference between "read," "scan," and "skim"? Is the difference related to the concentration on the text, or is there anything else? The answer is really important for me, since I often see these words in the texts I read.

I saw this question and all I can think of is some stupid YA story or Nancy Drew or something I must've read repeatedly - I was really into detectives and mysteries and ones with puzzles you can solve yourself, for a while - some story where the plot hinged on the difference between scan as in read quickly and scan as in a lawyer reading closely and examining every part of the document.

The hero(ine) was like Ha! You're just impersonating the lawyer! You don't know that you can't scan that 50-page document in an hour and have it back to me! or something.

Why is all this useless memory in my brain I don't even.

I don't think anyone even uses those two meanings of scan so opposingly like that, if they even did at the time.
