10:00 PM
haha forgot this was the star room xD

I think we all owe a HUGE "Thank You" to @Pops for putting up with our grievances for so long, and for I'm sure having a hand in getting us "over the hump" and finally a fully-fledged site.

(at least I think it was this room?)

A: Removing duplicates from multiple arrays at once

TusharCreate a function on Array.prototype that'll accept an array and filter the array by checking if the element is in the other array. // Define a function on Array prototype Array.prototype.arrayDiff = function (arr) { return this.filter(function (v) { return arr.indexOf(v) === -1; ...

Random, unrelated question, but does any know how to resolve conflicts when pulling from a remote repo in visual studio?

10:01 PM
@EthanBierlein Uninstall Visual Studio, issue resolved.
2

@Vogel612 huh?

@Phrancis Can we pin that?
@Mast not a chance ;)

@EthanBierlein Pin what? ;)

@Mat'sMug Pinned, starred as interesting (impossible), then unpinned. still the star's yellow

@EthanBierlein Yes.
Use the Team Explorer. It should show you the conflicts and let you compare them. You can them choose which you want to keep.
That's pretty much all there is to it.

10:02 PM
@Vogel612 known bug.
also a hack to star your own messages xD

Zak
@Pops <Feature Request> For 24 hours, unlimited stars in the 2nd Monitor :p

@EthanBierlein Just resolve them?

@Seth oh yea I remember :D

click on the little arrow next to the message on the starwall and click "cancel stars".

@JeroenVannevel I don't know how to view them, or do that.

10:03 PM
Just look at the source file

@Seth nah that'd be abuse

It will have a content like this:

@JeroenVannevel I don't know which source file it is.
See, this is my problem:
I'm trying to pull changes from the remote repo that I made online in-browser

@Vogel612 possibly. I don't know the context. I was assuming you starred it.

<======= HEAD
Console.WriteLine("lol");
===========
Console.WriteLine("omgwtf");
====== master

10:04 PM
And all I'm getting is this "helpful" error that says this:

Remove whichever you don't want
and remove the arrows as well

> "An error occured. Detailed message: 1 conflict prevents checkout"

@Seth cancelling stars as RO removes all stars, even those that aren't mine

@Vogel612 yup. I only saw 1 in the screenshot so.. ;)

Zak
Anyway, 'night to all.
Go us!

10:04 PM
@EthanBierlein goto CLI, you get a better error message

A merge conflict is literally git inserting 2 pieces of code in your source file
just go to the source file

It's good that you care about abuse though. I've seen too many ROs who don't.

and fix it

I assume you have some changes that would be overwritten by the pull

try to compile your program, VS will tell you where it goes wrong
it can't compile those ====> characters
It's probably in your Error List already anyway

10:05 PM
get your working copy into a clean state, since I think Jeroen completely misdiagnosed :D

what?
It's a merge conflict!
You gotta unconflict that hoe

I've inspected my source files

> I'm trying to pull changes

oh wait

no merge conflicts

10:06 PM
pull changes

just commit your local changes bruh

I don't have any changes to commit

or stash them... makes for less hassle to reverese

rm -rf /

10:07 PM
@EthanBierlein then you shouldn't get that error message

Well I am

@JeroenVannevel missing --no-preserve-root

and sudo

git status

@EthanBierlein then get into the command line, the Team provider for any IDE you choose is worse than git itself

10:08 PM
@JeroenVannevel rm -rf *

or just do git add -a and see if it says anything
I'm nearing the end of the git commands I know by heart so it would be really helpful if this fixes it

@JeroenVannevel LOL

soo tempted...

I feel this is timely

Q: Celebratory fireworks animation

200_successTo celebrate an important event, I hastily cobbled together an HTML canvas-based animation. A few concerns I have include: Performance: Does it run reasonably smoothly on most modern machines? How can I make it more efficient? Portability / Compatibility: Does it work correctly on all modern ...

Speaking of which, @200_success never did accept an answer on that Q^^

@EthanBierlein git doesn't work that way...

10:13 PM
@EthanBierlein That would royally fLIck your repo.

on a small repo? nah

I never knew @rolfl was so proficient in gaining hats.

oh yeah, he put some work into that

Q: Simple input output practice java code!Is it an acceptable code?

Emanuel LombaSo the code is just some exercise code printing questions and waiting for answers ,it is working perfectly well as far as i can tell ,i would like to know if this code could be considered acceptable or is still pretty bad writen ? import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Scanner; public cl...

10:28 PM
oh we look different
2

lol

@DanPantry no shit ;)

I'm clearly not going to get any more work done this afternoon, I better just call it a day.

is it that time of the year already? ;-)

Just about!

10:37 PM

The logo still shows up old.

Have you posted the bug on meta?

No. Pops said to wait for 24 hours.

ttqw
oh

That's the new one AFAIK.

10:43 PM
Yeah, it wasn't me, it was Adam. Apparently different CDN locations get updated at different times.

Are we getting an even better one?

So posting the same URL will show a different image depending on where you are, which makes that report look insane to people who are in the "wrong" location relative to you.

I think we can't rule out the possibility that @Hosch250 has gone bonkers

Q: Can we enhance the favicon on a dark background?

holroyIn Chrome on Max osx, at least, the favicon in the tab title kind of disappears when having a dark main background on the window. Can this be enhanced somehow? The image shows top part of window with two tabs on the main page of Code Review, and one tab from Stack Overflow. The icon from Stack...

@Pops balpha, actually

10:45 PM
@JeroenVannevel Now you can.

I eagerly await balpha jumping in here and passing the buck onto someone else.
2

LOL, no one wants to take the blame.

Aaand my stars are gone

@EthanBierlein Mine aren't.

10:46 PM
DANGIT I HAVE THANKSGIVING FOOD TO COOK I NEED TO STOP CHECKING IN HERE

Hmm. Someone suggested that meta and main look too similar. I think I might agree.

LOL.

@Mat'sMug Looks good here.

@nhgrif I agree as well.

ah, F5 did it
looks better than UX.SE anyway :)

10:46 PM
Is it thanksgiving today?

tomorrow

Ah.

@Mast Tomorrow, last I heard.

(Apple ketchup, if anyone's interested. Good on turkey in a way that "regular" tomato ketchup isn't.)

Someone bumped just as I clicked :(

10:47 PM
@Pops shouldn't that be iKetchup?
2

@Pops Sounds delicious.

I was just going to say me and Mat's are still not the same.

TTQW, later folks!

@Mast Will you be any time in the future?

@Mat'sMug seeya later!

10:48 PM
BTW, I think you are a subset of @Mat'sMug. At least, he can edit your messages, and you can't edit his.

@Hosch250 Can't rule it out.

And, it was balpha:
2 hours ago, by balpha
@Vogel612 depends ot what CDN node you're hitting. Give it at most 24 hours and the old image will be gone from everywhere
Hey, is Adam Lear any relation to Anna Lear, who also works at SO?
(Didn't mean to ping.)

@Hosch250 Let's go with "yes"

Are you the same person?

I was gonna be all cagey with "I'll wait for you to read my profile", but yes.

10:52 PM
LOL.
If you hadn't responded directly, I was going to post some Russian text and ask for a translation.
I remember you know Russian from an incident in the Tavern.
Hey guys, it sounds as if we are going to get the non-indented code blocks soon!
Well, in 6-8 weeks.
> CommonMark standard supports that and we're currently test-driving it in the Documentation beta. We have plans to eventually move the Q&A sites over to CommonMark as well, so... Working on it?

ohhh do I smell markdown unification?
after the last podcast rambled on and on about unification?

That's where I found this.

wouldn't it be nice if we had one markdown?
2

Zak
So, am I the only one binge-watching Jessica Jones right now?

@Zak I'm binge-listening to Columbia, Gem of the Ocean.

11:02 PM
@Vogel612 isn't that one of Jeff Atwood's pet projects?

kinda used to be maybe -ish?

A markdown standard that is.

@Hosch250 "soon" is an overstatement

there's a w3c group for it

Docs are in beta for at least a few months. I'm not sure on what our Commonmark upgrade plans are even with that going out of beta.

11:04 PM
Just curious, and not saying anyone is lazy, but what do you guys do all day?
Obviously, you have people monitoring the servers.
And designing site colors.

@Hosch250 Nick posts nice screenshots of that.

@Vogel612 I know. I like reading the recaps when they install new servers, etc.

what's currently probably happening is unification of Jobs (fka. Careers), Documentation, Teams and SO
but that's just wild guesswork

Slightly different discussion, but is code design on or off topic here?
From my understanding, it is on as long as the code is already fully working?

@Hosch250 My day today was "wtf is throwing Out of Memory exceptions in prod? digs Oh, web server gone awry. Okay. Next problem: password recovery links "expire" too quickly. An hour later, turns out we generate them wrong in a few edge cases. Fixed that. Oh, we're launching a new design... great. Let me update whatever needs updating in preparation for that. Somewhere in there I'd love to do the things that were actually on my list today."

11:07 PM
OK, cool. Is that 'great' sarcastic?

Q: FFT implementation for integers

sudomakeinstall2There is this problem I want to solve that requires me to use FFT on integers. So I used this implementation. But I am getting wrong answer on the judge. So I am wondering if it could be the round-off error? My code: // be name Khoda #include <iostream> #include <algorithm> #include <cmath>...

@Hosch250 Nah

Zak
@Hosch250 retrospective design reviews are a natural part of Code Reviews. It's the prospective/hypothetical ones that are Off-Topic

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it's asking for a code review. — Ross Ridge 50 secs ago

It did derail the day a bit since I didn't know the design was basically ready. And the American contingent is out tomorrow/Friday (so both me and Dalgas, devs who do site design launches are out), it was basically "today or Monday" and well... y'all have waited long enough. :)

11:09 PM
Now, prospective design reviews, I believe, are on topic on Programmers given it is an interesting and well-defined topic.
Interesting usually means non-trivial.
@AdamLear Well, thanks.

Zak
@Hosch250 I used to think I knew what was on-topic on programmers. Now I know better.
2

@Zak I'm not saying I know all that is on topic there, but I think that is a subset of what is on topic.

Zak
I think their rules are much like ours in that they're not always what you'd intuitively assume based on their description, and they strongly enforce them. Best bet is go see their version of "A guide for SO users"

Hello.
Finally, the new CR design!

@TheCoffeeCup awesome isn't it? :D

Q: Change multiple if conditions in a better system in PHP

GrischaI had written with very few PHP skills a conjugator script. It was not good, so I decided to start it from scratch with a help from a friend. Now I need your reviews and improvement tips. I know all my long arrays with the all verbs and many more long arrays aren't a good way,but I have no clu...

Q: Segmentation fault in Trie ADT and help in search/insert

JeromeI have a trie ADT which I think should work(atleast the insert). It inserted all the words at first, but after revisiting the code it produces a segmentation fault at "(!curr->index[charIndex])" on file trie.c line 16. There are 3 files. trie.c : #include "trie.h" #include <stdlib.h> #include <...

GruntJS doesn't sound like a language I would enjoy.

~snort

Zak
Just waiting on reload so I can give pops a star :)

@Zak Which post?

@Vogel612 I think you mean ~grunt ;)

Zak
11:39 PM
@Hosch250 All of them :)

Oh. I've still got stars left.

^^ that was so obvious...

If you present a good argument, I might star them for you.

@CaptainObvious I can no longer VTC, but that deserves one.

@Mast It got what it deserved from me :)

11:40 PM
Wait, I thought segfaults were allowed?

163 rep to go till I can VTC again
@Hosch250 Why? Segfaults == broken code

I thought we discussed this and decided that they were allowed. @Mat'sMug Do you remember the meta?

@Hosch250 segfaults mean the code is reproducibly borken

It usually means some condition hasn't been verified which should've been or some data is not even remotely in the right place. Or a simple index error...

because you're accessing memory incorrectly

11:42 PM
OK.

That.

I'm pretty sure we decided that something broken about memory was allowed, and I remember that I thought it shouldn't be.

Q: 4-Stage pipelined RV32I CPU in Verilog

truecolorThis is a simple 4-Stage pipeline that partially implements the RV32I ISA. All instructions are supported, except jalr, those relating to memory (l*, l*u, s*, fence and fence.i), or system calls (sbreak and scall). The pipeline stages are more or less the classic RISC ones without the memory acce...

@CaptainObvious Verilog?!

no clue, I'd have to dig, and I don't know what exactly you're talking about..

11:44 PM
Me either.

@Mast actually there's three questions tagged verilog...
is it just me or is half the code commented out??

@Vogel612 I know, that's why I'm surprised.
We have what, 3 verilog and 6 VHDL?
@Vogel612 I think that's a formatting bug. It doesn't recognize the language.

possible answer invalidation by TheCoffeeCup on question by Emanuel Lomba: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/111844/revisions

He raises some valid concerns, but unfortunately I don't write Verilog.

@Mast "fixed"

11:46 PM
@Duga Fixed indentation for last brace, which seemed to be accidentally left out.

@Vogel612 Better than nothing.

okay that answer is downright criminal and got 2 upvotes...
wtf..
@Mast your pet peeve user is at it again..

@Vogel612 Which?

writing affirmativeanswer as affirmativeAnswer is actually unrelated to proper english. Numbering variables is considered worst practice, what you're saying about constructors is utter nonsense and you're completely missing the obvious point of programming against interfaces (so declaring list or citizens as a List<Citizen> citizens = new ArrayList<Citizen>();Vogel612 1 min ago

11:51 PM
@Phrancis Lost your CSS file?

@Vogel612 Yup.

@Hosch250 apparently
Nah chat sometimes does that in Chrome if my laptop has been closed for a few hours and I open it

refresh harder? :)

@CaptainObvious wtf is ...

verilog is a HDL (hardware description language)
similar to VHDL

11:53 PM
Code sure looks ugly

In electronics, a hardware description language (HDL) is a specialized computer language used to program the structure, design and operation of electronic circuits, and most commonly, digital logic circuits. A hardware description language enables a precise, formal description of an electronic circuit that allows for the automated analysis, simulation, and simulated testing of an electronic circuit. It also allows for the compilation of an HDL program into a lower level specification of physical electronic components, such as the set of masks used to create an integrated circuit. A hardware...
@Phrancis that's because hardware cannot really be abstracted

Ahh

@Mast It looks like he learned some of the good, but hasn't dropped the bad yet.

So it's like writing assembly and stuff like that eh?

@Phrancis actually it's even a level of abstraction lower

11:54 PM
Damn.

@Hosch250 He hasn't learned much good IMO.
This user has a list of needless edits, obviously flawed answers and iffy comments. I consider this user to be toxic to the community.

Well, person1 is arguably better than p1. At least you know it is a person.

it's basically creating circuitry through a declarative language, but from a language like SQL it's almost the same
oh cool and the answer got accepted...

And camelCase is much better than lowercase.

11:55 PM
oh they got that part right.

@Vogel612 Triggered my downvote.

@Vogel612 Ah ok, I noticed it looks very "hard-coded" (pun intended)

And citizenList is much better than list.

Talking about that beginner Java question?

@Hosch250 true, but the other parts of the answer are actually harmful, so there's that

11:57 PM
True.

A: Simple input/output practice

DrProgrammerNaming Naming is fundamental to make your code easier to read. ArrayList<Citizens> list = new ArrayList<Citizens>(); Name this to citizensList. I can't believe how much cleaner the new font for posts (and most of the site) looks, versus the old Arial
Reminds me of what they have on ... is it Programmers?

Eh well I got maths the first lecture tomorrow today, so I'll head to bed.
niters :)

OK good night!
