@go-meek got the free trial of ScreenFlow and it works really well. So much better than whatever is on my work computer

@Ryan Hey thanks for update, I'll give it a try too. It does look very user friendly as well, I was just worried about performance!
@johnp hahaha! Intimidating!
@AndrewH Is it some kind of imposition for printing? I'd probably do as you said you did in the past, using Indesign. I find it more precise to align stuff with it. I have no better suggestion than Indesign, Quark or Preps.
@AndrewH Why can't you use Indesign? Do you need the final file to have a custom shape (your 2 shapes together) without the rectangle background?

Added more info to my question:

Q: Layout attached to a master page but with a different swatch for every page/document

marcusdoesstuffIf I need to make more than a hundred documents, with the same layout but different content, it seems to make sense for me to use a master page and do them in the same InDesign file (exporting them to individual pdf pages at the end) so I can tweak the layout later. [edit: I've convinced people ...

Typical advanced question, for me, that's kinda hard to explain. :P

@go-meek Looking at my example, I have 2 different size signs I have to create. How would I make this in InDesign? In Illustrator it is easy to just place the image over both artboards. In InDesign, wouldn't it be much harder to place the image at the exact position it should be to create the tiling effect? InDesign only works if the height of all the signs are the same.

2:33 PM
hey @Darth_Vader you been missing. Everything good?

@Ryan ya just very slammed

2:58 PM
> Hi [Not Provided],

top notch

hey, Not, good to see you!
?how was the meetup with the Provided family!?

great to be seen!
:D

meh I've gotten that letter before. I just sent them a nice email saying they might want to correct it before more people receive it
this was from someone I met though and asked to get info from

ah, this is unsolicited junk. Already deleted it

yeah if it was unsolicited I would do the same
actually I dont even open those, right click delete never even seeing what nonsense is inside
trying to find some more ideas for the weekly challenge

3:08 PM
it's World Toilet Day, I was expecting some sort of tie-in

well I mean now that I know that --- it can be arranged

3:37 PM
@DA. early notice for you if you want to get in on the weekly exercise

DA.
@Ryan thanks!
I'll jump in if not tied up in conference calls.

@JohnB @Johnp @Vincent @marcusdoesstuff @go-meek @ZachSaucier @joojaa anyone up for the weekly challenge? Did I miss anyone?

check!

I'm here

4:01 PM
alright guess this is everyone
The theme with help from JohnB is World Toilet Day

what have I done D:

Let's use a 6" x 6" space to create something to promote Sanitation and World Toilet Day
I'll start the timer in 5 minutes to give everyone a chance to glance over the site
You all ready? @Vincent @Johnb anyone else that might be silently participating?

yup

aye

starting the timer

4:11 PM
I swear every time we start someone comes in to pester me
they know!

DA.
NO TURD PICTURES

LOL

hehe

4:29 PM
and under a minute on the clock

nice, @Ryan
what is that rounded typeface? I like it!

@JohnB heh, same typefaces as on your coaster

good eye :D

@Vincent Nunito Bold via Google Fonts

4:32 PM
@Ryan spanks!

I always spend too much time looking for fonts, I need to load some more I like ahead of time

Yeah, that's why I stuck to the identity's Century Gothic

good stuff guys

I started with pixabay looking for toilet pictures. Found the outdoor one that I liked and then just kinda felt would be cool to ghost in a toilet. After that when coming up with text I went with the classic book and adjusted the design to match a little

great idea

4:35 PM
Do you know the book Everyone Poops, Vincent? Think its been published in every language but really not sure

heh, I went straight to unsplash for an image :)
ah! Now I get it! I knew the adage, but haven't read the book

lol :D

ah except I should've done all caps. Was going to fast and did regular from the final page

hm, nice format, the square

4:36 PM
! plus turds for @DA.
hah! I just noticed the fine print on yours @JohnB paid for in part by The National World Toilet Day Organization. Nice touch

DA.

real nice da
you add the flowers that well so fast or found the toilet with flowers in it?

oh, nice indeed
@Ryan thanks for the assignment, again. :D

4:58 PM
Thanks for participating. Pretty nice results all around I think this week

DA.
that's my actual toilet
we always have flowers in it
(nah, just a bit of photoshopping)

poor flowers

Q: Rudeness, sarcasms, insults, and being nice with new users

go-meekTLDR: Learn to communicate. Be nice. Avoid personal insults and abuse. If you can't, why are you here wasting time "helping" people? Flag personal attacks, useless sarcasm, insults; don't be a spectator. It's a long text, don't bother to read or comment if you truly don't care. Comments and an...

I modified room owner access for the above because they appear to be no longer active in this chatroom. If you have an issue with it then please feel free to hit me up but if you're not going to be active then per the meta post I'm doing my mod duties.

7:11 PM
hey @joojaa how are you?

Cleaning my desk
found a stepper motor
need to get it rolling
What is all this fighting thing
Hi @Ryan how are you

alright, overly busy at the moment trying to figure out some shipping stuff for a work trip
You're rigging the stepper motor up to work with graphics right? Think I recall you saying animated gifs or something?
Heya @Scott how you been?

@Ryan No i was thinking of making it draw pictures
Or just want it to step out

Look, I'll just say that my perception of issues appears to not be solely my perception. Y'all can think I'm "antagonizing" all you want. But someone being condescending, rude, and offensive, then claiming "oh I'm being bullied" or "There's a language barrier" every time. Is clearly playing a game the Mods aren't seeing. Or if they are seeing, they don't know how to handle the one user who has disrupted things for many other users. See ya'll.

@Scott for what its worth i dont think so
Internet is TOXIC there snothing i can do about that. Text vbased communication has this problem

7:22 PM
Scott, your comment on that meta post was completely unnecessary and not helpful whatsoever. It's disruptive and antagonizing, there's no arguing that
we're not going to sit back and watch the fireworks, we're going to step in.

I agree. But I've been here for years without issues.. so suddenly I'm treated as if i'm the problem... really??? And then @Da must be a problem too then?? Allowing that meta post to remain is a freakin joke coming from that user.
She's playing a game...
she's always the victim in spite of how condecending, rude, arrogant, and insulting she is.
I won't say anything more about it.

@joojaa and there you have it. sigh.

We (mods) unanimously agree that nobody is an innocent angel in these situations. Everyone has some of the blame to shoulder.
It's not difficult to get along, I know we're all capable.

I did wonder about that post... Is it a copy by the way

@JohnB what's the stance on a meta post showing comments that have been flagged and deleted?

7:27 PM
There's usually nothing to gain from never-ending comment threads and they have recently been getting prickly. If you disagree with something someone has posted, just post a comment saying why and be succinct. If they reply to your comment to defend themselves, I think it's best to just let it go. That's where the comment threads spiral out of control
meh, I don't think there's a need to dredge up stuff we've removed
13,500 hang tags: drilled and complete! Fingers sliced on new bulk paper cutter: only one!

lol well done, except the last part

that is the sharpest thing I have ever used in my life. I barely grazed it with my finger while wiping the oil off it and bam whoops

i'd be interested in seeing a photo
actually you should consider photographing all your equipment and putting it on a Stock website
I know when I was working for industry directory finding technical stuff on stock photos is almost impossible.

no camera with me today but I'll do that tomorrow. The paper drill is pretty cool, I've never used one. It has a hollow bit that all the punched out holes go up and out the back

Could find maybe a Baler or industrial sewing machine but anything even more specific like a Flexofolder for example (machine to fold boxes) is just no chance

DA.
9:50 PM
Scott isn't the problem.
@Scott I hope you don't leave. But understand why you would want to. I'm trying harder to ignore the problem. It's hard some days. :)

@DA. I dont know what to say much anymore on the matter.

DA.
@Darth_Vader no need to say anything. It is what it is. JohnB's "just let it go..." is likely the best we can do.

@DA. and I wish we could for the community but it seems like some dont want it

DA.
@Darth_Vader not sure I fully understand the context...are we just talking about the few long comment threads? (Maybe there is more drama behind the scenes...)

the mods are trying to be unbiased in matters

DA.
9:56 PM
ah. well, I can't really comment on that. Not sure what drama that may be. I probably don't even want to know. :)
eh, being a mod is hard as it is. Trying to be unbiased is nearly impossible. So, sympathies.

@DA. let me ask you a question
what is wrong with this statement, "Unfortunately, we can't answer this for you. Maybe you could have a look on Google at what are the limits of copyrighted elements, or ask/browse the law.stackexchange.com. Any answer you'll get here will be useless to you without showing what symbol you mean, the logo you created, the name, where it's going to be used, etc."

DA.
There's nothing wrong with it by itself.
In the broader context, I can see why people are tired of one person constantly pointing that out on every question.
It's also a bit naive to assume graphic design professionals have no understanding of IP law.
It's a part of the industry. That we don't have law degrees doesn't mean we don't often deal with it and have knowledge about the topic.
So, anyways, that comment alone, it's fine.

Then why did you attack Go-meek personally for it? Why not say what you just said about "It's also a bit naive...."

DA.
Not sure I attecked her for that comment.
I think I was referring to the "designers aren't competent" statement.

>@go-meek you are turning into a troll.

DA.
10:00 PM
Which is either a) very rude or b) a huge language isunderstanding.
again, the troll comment was based on the 'designers aren't comeptent' statement.

ah its 5, got to go. Ill be on later this evening, sorry to walk out in the middle

to DA's defense I did read the whole convo and I understand why DA took to be offensive the context of designers aren't competent

DA.
I want to believe it's just a language barrier mis-statement, but the reactions after that tend to get me to side a bit more with scott...there's more to it than that.
and, that's OK. It is what it is.

10:25 PM
@go-meek @DA. @Scott I think we all can be civil and have some great conversations in regards to design. I hope everyone on the site can start over and we can talk about what we love, which I hope is design or code.
and that above is for everyone. I love coming in here and talking to people in my field and wish we could have more conversations like some other SE chats have.

DA.
Yea, "ignoring" is likely the strategy I'll try harder to focus on.
And no hate towards anyone here. Just conversation. :)

11:16 PM
Okay.. my thing.. I've been (hopefully) noticeably more absent around here. And this is why. I DO NOT like the drama. I get stirred up and after reacting a bit, I realize it's best to just leave. So I do. I am not perfect. Yes I can post reactionary things. I do not deny that. But I'd also express that they are reactionary. Not catalysts.
There's a difference there. I've been politiely ignoring the issue for a few weeks now. No big deal. Then that multi-photo answer comment I left stirred up insulting and rude comments.. so.. well. I was hot. I was letting it go though. I then read the conversation which took place with @DA. and saw that all the same excuses and accusations were hurled at me, were also hurled at DA . That is unfounded.
So yeah.. I take offense when ONE user is stirring the pot with MANY long-standing users. I don't like being made to feel I'm in teh wrong or somehow "victimizing" someone who, in reality is actually victimizing others. I'm not one to be abused and just "take it" and to repeatedly read the "oh, I'm being bullied" and "I just don't understand your language" comments is frankly pathetic.
And this includes what I'm sure took place in that private chat room where go-meek claimed it "was all stupid" and she "just wanted to go write a blog". Again... playing the victim while BEING a problem.
There is no language barrier. Face it, no one knew there may be another language at play until she said so. That to me.. isnt' a language problem if everyone thinks English is your native language.
I don't harbor any ill-will towards anyone. I don't "hate" at all in life. That's not me. But I am strong-willed, and I do have a backbone. I don't like being stepped on so when someone does, I point it out.
I feel I've been flogged for pointing it out and in some minor way, she's been if not rewarded, coddled and allowed to perpetuate the belief that "everyone here is an egomaniac" when SHE is the largest troublesome ego I've seen on this site. I'm over her. In my opinion her behavior is very troll-like. Stomping around and whenever ANYONE points out a discrepancy they are insulted... Then she runs off and claims she's the victim.
In reality one user matters very little. So I've been fine just letting it go. What is REALLY troubling to me is how moderators have allowed her to perpetuate this "victim" attitude and scolded me. At least that's how I've perceived things. If I'm wrong in that, I'll accept it. But from where i sit... you all can't do enough for go-meek and you all come to her aide as soon as anyone else has an issue with her...
and please.... name me other users on this site with the same issues??? I've not seen any since Confused which we all agreed was just a trouble maker. If 2,3 or 5 long-standing members are all running into the same problem with ONE new users.... it seems unfounded to THREATEN suspension for everyone.
I'm willing to accept it's just a personality thing. And I will make more of an effort to just ignore that personality. However, mods need to be aware and attentive to times when that personality is stirring the pot then claiming to be "bullied".
Face it though... if we were all egomaniacs here we'd all be having problems with each other regularly. So again.... which ego is the issue????

DA.
11:41 PM
I think the egomaniac comment is key.
I get that feeling too...that she's here to 'fight the elitist design industry' with her commentary.
And I actually get that. I've always said 'graphic designers are people that thing graphic design is more important than it is'. BUT...this is ultimately a web site for graphic designers so to imply that it's only for amateurs or freelancers is rather counterproductive and I think what often triggers the bizarre comment threads.
There was a conversation about logo pricing. I said something like some logos take 8 hours to make and some take 800. Dom and I had a nice chat room discussion only to have her come in and say that "it's off topic because only agencies deal with large logo projects". Again, as a stand-alone comment, it was mostly just odd and a bit of a non-sequitur. But as part of a larger pattern...

We are well beyond he/she started it defenses. Reactionary or catalystic, I don't see the difference. Every participant has the power to end it by not responding. Escalating the situation by flaming back is just as bad as firing the first shot in my eyes. That's how we're going to treat future situations, we've run out of options and tried the diplomatic route

DA.
I don't know what the diplomatic route was, nor do I probably care. Not responding is likely the best solution. We'll see how it goes.
I'd just hate to lose members like Scott over it.

Talking it out. When we asked for advice in the network mod chat, they advised to just hand out suspensions. That's truly what we don't want to do

DA.
yea, that's noble. I applaud that.
It's also hard to handle it any other way, so sympathize with that.
Being a mod is rarely a fun job. :)

That's a little silly John.... one personality cna post an insulting comment but the users she's insulted can't respond without incurring wrath?? really??

11:49 PM
Again, what was with the comment you left on her meta post? How was that not a catalyst?

I do realize it's a difficult situation. I'm not downplayign that. And I do accept my responsibility at times.
So I'm never claiming I'm blameless
Her meta post was the Catalyst John... seriously
She knows FULL well when she does that.
Stop buying her "i'm jsut a feable girl" routine

I'm not going to accept that. You were not mentioned by name in the post. You did not have to leave the comment.

If I had posted that meta post.. you all would have come back at me and defended users and what they say.. hmm... not seeing that on her post...

DA.
well, to be fair John, this is a small community. I don't think we always need to use names to make it clear who a comment might be directed at.

That private chat today CLEARLY makes it known that meta post was, for the most part, directed at me.

DA.
11:52 PM
...which is just another challenge for you mods. Small communities are hard.
Are we talking about the 'be nice' meta post?

Even so, the comment was completely unnecessary and served no purpose but to incite a reaction

Loo, I've been gone. I come in once a day maybe to asnwer easy questions if I seen them for the most part.
So that's fine. It won't perpetuate. But you shoudl be aware... I'm not here much BECAUSE of that personality. No other reason.
Hello kettle.. I'm black??
Yes the original comment was unwarranted.. which is why I edited it
I'm not perfect.. I was out of line, realized it and corrected the situation to a less personal jab.
Which I felt was perfectly fine.

I don't know what the original comment even was, I didn't see it. The edited version was bad enough

"hello kettle.. I'm black"
How is that too much?

Hello kettle...... You're black! — Scott 6 hours ago

11:55 PM
How is that too much???
Ever heard of the pot calling the kettle black?

Yes, I've heard of it. go-meek posted a general post, you respond with a personal attack

Okay.. and this is why I think Mods are, for the most part on her side. Fine.

How is rubbing it in her face constructive? How does that make me on her side?

My participation is voluntary and it's in my hand.s Thank you. Have a great nightn.
Okay.. I'll explain...
A long, long thread abotu how comments are incorrect.. how users arent' treated with respect as they should be....
And then look back on her comments to me and to DA... and others...
and You fail to see the irony and slap me for one four word post.
yeah... you all aren't defending her at all are you???

I completely understand what you meant by the comment. I completely disapprove of your action to leave a smarmy remark.
