Q: Grammaticality of user interface of stackexchange sites

UnreasonOne of the possible roles that EL&U could fulfill is to provide a place where questions of language correctness for user interface on all stackexchange sites are addressed. I think it would be a useful way to give back to the community. For example, the following question could be asked. ...

user19161
I cannot understand why Unreason is making those comments, it seems weird. I'll try to figure him out in the days to come.

user19161
@brachomonacho Hi!

Hi Jasper!
How's things?

user19161
@brachomonacho Bad, but nvm. Now read the comments to the meta post above, it's getting really funny.

user19161
11:02 AM
I like the symmetrical snowflake against a blue background, I think I will keep this for a while.

user19161
@brachomonacho nvm=Never mind, I thought it's a standard abbrev

user19161
Just like tmr=tomorrow. At least I think it's common in sms.

@JasperLoy You should check out this site, if you like snowflakes... It's awesome.
@JasperLoy Oh, that's the first that I've seen that abbreviation... But then, I tend to be a bit behind the times when it comes to those sorts of things.

user19161
@brachomonacho I will confess my ignorance by saying that although I know they are symmetrical, I didn't know they can come in so many shapes.

11:06 AM
Not as bad as my former workmate, though, who one asked me "what does equal P mean?" when I used the =P emoticon in an email to him.

user19161
@brachomonacho Same, just influence from the people around.

@JasperLoy Me neither. I've never seen a snowflake before; I don't think Australia gets cold enough anywhere for big ones to form.
I read somewhere that a single snowflake can grow to the size of a child's palm, but I've never bothered to find out whether or not that was true. Would be cool if it was, though.

user19161
@brachomonacho Will you say that Australian Eng is sort of BrE? While Canadian Eng is sort of AmE? That's the impression I get.

(Perhaps @Cerberus would know?)

user19161
By the way I get all my avatars from avatarsdb.com, check it out if you want to change.

11:18 AM
They closed my question!!!

I would agree entirely. I find that most Australians still heavily favour BrE constructions and peculiarities in day to day speech, though the Americanisms are creeping in more and more, these days.
We certainly follow the British spelling conventions, like using 's' instead of 'z' in words like 'recognise' and 'organisation'.

And even the linguistics meta site closed it
I thought you people had a genuine interest in the English language?

I haven't met very many Canadians, but the few that I have met I mistook for being American, because they didn't have the stereotypical accent (i.e., pronouncing 'about' as 'aboot')... and they didn't seem to speak any differently to the Americans I've seen on TV, and in movies.
@JasperLoy It would appear that he missed the tongue-in-cheek nature of your sagely remark.

12:03 PM
@Skullpatrol 1. Stack Exchange is not a place for discussion. It's a place for practical, answerable questions. You start your question asking for a discussion. 2. you're asking a question that only the editors of the OED can answer. 3. You seem to have made up your mind that the changes are wrong.
@Skullpatrol You could edit your question to address a particular problem with the redaction of some part of the definition of of, perhaps asking if the new definition still means the same as the old. That might make a better question.

@MattЭллен My question is about the English language and a change in the definition of one of its most important prepositions and what affect this will have on future generations who will be using this "new and improved" definition Sir.
But, alas, since the question was [closed] this ends any such concerns.

@Skullpatrol it's not a practical or answerable question. It's not about the change in the definition of a word, it's about how the OED has changed its definition of a word. Of still means the same, regardless what the OED write.
BAH! why have the canteen replaced curry day with Thanks Giving? I'm British, goddamnit, I'll have no part in some nonsense across the Atlantic.

12:30 PM
Yeah, cause as everybody knows, curry is endemic to Lancashire.

It's a great British dish.

You misspelled Sri Lankian.

that is served every Thursday
Well, I'm more Sinhalese than I am American
Except this Thursday, apparently

I see. You only like stuff from former colonies that didn't kick your ass.
Sorry, arse.

:D
I prefer curry to turkey.

user19161
12:34 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Ah, epidemic, endemic, pandemic.

@JasperLoy Ah, non, sequi, tur.

user19161
@MattЭллен I prefer women to men.

I'm going for lunch. grump

Enjoy your turkey.

@RegDwightѬſ道 9000 is your favourite hyperbole.

It's a net-wide meme. I'm not the inventor.

user19161
By the way, how does the flag thing work for 10k users? When I get a notification saying this is not an answer or a low quality answer and I think otherwise, I should choose invalid right?

If you think a flag is invalid, you can mark it as invalid, yes.
Google Streetview is a great artist.

Q: What could "MVP posture" mean in a game for Kinect?

Alexander GalkinI have recently bought the new Kinect control for XBox which allows to use your whole body to control your game protagonist. In one game called "Kinect Joy Ride" one has to mimick the postures. The postures are shown as a silhouette of your avatar with a short description like "fireball", "zomb...

Q: How to describe a person who loves normal room temperature between 26C to 29C

Larry MorriesHow can I describe a person who likes room temperature between 26 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius. The person dislikes any temperature beyond this range.

user19161
He loves asking such questions. I expect the next one to be about above 30 degrees.

user19161
Maybe I should ask on his behalf.

@JasperLoy and then vote to close?

where did you find it out?

user19161
It would be a measure of quality.

indeed

user19161
I used something called the calculator.

Take rep divided by (number of questions+number of answers)

oh, yeah, I've done that before. I think I'm at about 43 or something

user19161
1:26 PM
But rep cap would affect accuracy of this.

user19161
Why rep cap? I don't get it. Perhaps it has been raised before on MSO.

probably. It seems likely there would be a fair amount of exposition on the topic

Q: What is the reasoning behind the reputation cap?

Graeme PerrowThere has been a lot of talk about the daily reputation cap and what counts and what doesn't count and so on. But why is there a cap at all? I've seen lots of questions about whether the cap number should be changed, or whether certain things should or should not apply to the cap, but I've never ...

Q: Suggestion for rep cap

Marcelo CantosReputation could be earned more slowly after reaching the daily cap, rather than simply stopping altogether. This would still have the effect of encouraging people to get a life after contributing their bit for the day, but not completely discourage keen posters. I don't fully understand the mot...

Greetings!
@Skullpatrol Don't forget you can edit questions even if they're closed. If you edit it into a proper question, it can be re-opened, and answered.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Buenos tardes!

how are things in sunny England?

Sunny and English :)
How is cold Canada?

Proper grammar is "How cold is Canada", you pineapple.

Not that cold, actually
It's above freezing. So we consider it "warm".

1:49 PM
Also, tarde is feminine.
Matt should eat fewer turkey. Also, less turkeys.

user19161
How cold is Canada? / How is cold Canada? / How is Canada cold?

Cold is Canada how?

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Wrong.

is how? Canada cold

user19161
@MattЭллен Wrong.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Wrong.

In Spanish, first goest the mark question, duh.

1:51 PM
@JasperLoy not wrong

@RegDwightѬſ道 buy inverted ¿si?

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 True, you can have "Is Canada? How cold!"

Is ? how cold Canada

@JasperLoy well, to be technical, you probably need a subject in that first sentence.
But I didn't have one in my jumble

Isada how cold can?

user19161
1:54 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Nope. For example, A says "Canada is hot!" and B replies "Is Canada?"

@JasperLoy That's not really idiomatic

Or in German "HowcoldisCanada?"

user19161
Or A says "JB sings well!" and B replies "Does he?"

@JasperLoy — Good on him if he does. I'm retired from active play, so it hardly matters.

Camel case in German? Orly?

1:56 PM
"That hippo looks fat!"
"Will he?"

user19161
@Robusto You are retired from chat too.

@JasperLoy yes but the key is that you used a pronoun and not a proper noun

@JasperLoy I occasionally show up. But I still win when I do.

I like how Jasper always tells us what we are and what we aren't, and when we must go to bed, and when we are wrong, and when Rob's in the wrong room.

@Jasper: I started one year ago yesterday. IIRC, you were way ahead of me on ELU in score when I did. I played the game for about seven months, pwned everybody and their brother, and retired gloriously from the field. It is inevitable that others will overtake me eventually. But let's see them do what I did in seven months. Then they can brag.

Man includes woman as well, like gay includes lesbian if interpreted broadly.

2:09 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Hmmmm, I think I'd prefer a full price banning. I don't want to look like a slouch.

Then start working on it. Cause them 150 days is long.

@Jasper: November 23 to July 15. If you can find someone else who goes from 0 to Legendary in < 8 months, then they can brag. Everyone else ... not so much.

user19161
I Am Legend is a 2007 post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It is the third feature film adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name, following 1964's The Last Man on Earth and 1971's The Omega Man. Smith plays virologist Robert Neville, who is immune to a vicious man-made virus originally created to cure cancer. He works to create a remedy while living in Manhattan in 2012, a city inhabited by violent victims of the virus. The film's plot is an example of a "Last Man on Earth" story. Warner Bros. began developing I A...

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Nope, just never expected to see such a username.

@JasperLoy people tend to be creative with usernames. Except on the dating site I maintain, where every female and some males insist on their username being sexy03204 or whatever.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Might be Robusto's other account.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 well of course! everyone knows you can't lie in a username

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 If I joined a dating site I would definitely avoid using sexy03204. Usually these people are not sexy at all.

2:19 PM
@MattЭллен But what does that mean for me? My username was new once, but now it has a long, distinguished history dating back to 1998.

It's still shiny though, and that's all that matters.

user19161
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a 1989 American adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, from a story co-written by executive producer George Lucas. It is the third film in the Indiana Jones franchise. Harrison Ford reprises the title role and Sean Connery plays Indiana's father, Henry Jones, Sr. Alison Doody, Denholm Elliott, Julian Glover, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies also have featured roles. In the film, set largely in 1938, Indiana searches for his father, a Holy Grail scholar, who has been kidnapped by Nazis. After the mixed reaction to the dark Indiana Jones and t...

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, commonly referred to as Breaking Dawn, is a 2011/2012 two-part romantic fantasy film directed by Bill Condon and based on the novel Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. The two parts form the fourth and final installment in the The Twilight Saga series. All three main cast members, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprise their roles. Part 1, rated PG-13, was released on November 18, 2011, and Part 2 will be released on November 16, 2012. In totals as of November 21st, the movie has grossed $291,022,261 worldwide. @RegDwightѬſ道 This is so awesome. Why the hell did they have to include a huge one-piece ship?

user19161
Announcement. Movie out in cinemas!

@RegDwightѬſ道 They do that so that the ship can actually float. My brother had a smaller floating ship when we were kids. I don't really approve, primarily because I don't approve of putting lego in the bathtub. But that's why.
Because it's for kids.

2:31 PM
I know all that. But still. Why the hell did they have to include a huge one-piece ship?
I would buy that set without it.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Maybe descendent of Titanic survivor.

I remember my brother having a Lego ship as a child. It came with ballast to stick to the bottom so that it would stay upright in water

yeah.... watcha gonna do. I also disapprove of that big one-piece yellow crossbar wall thingy
That thing should be at least 6 individual pieces.

Nah, that thingy is okay.

I'm not sure we put it in water more than once

2:33 PM
You need it for huge cranes.

And I wish Lego would stop making things in primary colours

Not necessarily for this tiny one, but for huge ones it's a must.

user19161
It's a mast.

@RegDwightѬſ道 I still think it should be multiple pieces

Wouldn't carry its own weight.

user19161
2:34 PM
There's a mist.

But yeah, I'm running out of space to store those thingies in.
And I don't have room for a whole frigging fregate.
Xblast time, BRB.

@JasperLoy Not a mast. This bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=64448
@RegDwightѬſ道 I'm sure it could be made both strong and re-usable.

I think I object most to the hook on the fishing rod. It's made the fish look like some sort of law enforcement vehicle

@MattЭллен true. But, that piece is an invaluable piece.
I mostly object to the ship's hull, mast, and the crane. That crane should probably have 10x the piece count it has.

2:50 PM
The mast is composed of highly reusable parts.
The crane can't be made nice and sturdy at that scale without the huge, but again, highly reusable, parts.
So I only object to the hull.
But that objection overshadows everything.

4:32 PM
@JasperLoy I did.
@JasperLoy I know... You need to slow down. I've only answered 19 questions this month.
@JasperLoy Why was Thursagen disqualified?

user19161
@Mahnax What I mean is he is suspended for voting irregularities, probably sockpuppeting. But maybe it's just his nephew and brother upvoting all his answers.

@JasperLoy I knew he was suspended, I just wanted to know why. How much rep did he have prior to his suspension?

user19161
@Mahnax Above 20k.

@JasperLoy Wow... But then again, sockpuppeting. I wonder how much of that 20k was deserved.

user19161
@Mahnax Even if one has many fans that would not be considered sockpuppets as the IP addresses would be different. So it's probably someone who stays with him.

4:36 PM
@JasperLoy Or himself as a second account.

user19161
@mahnax Did you star my message above?

@JasperLoy Yes. It's very nice.

user19161
@Mahnax I would prefer if you starred the other one with trigonometric functions if you like it.

@JasperLoy It's nice, but I like the other one more.

user19161
@Mahnax By the way, you learnt trigonometric functions?

4:38 PM
@JasperLoy Yep.

user19161
@Mahnax Just checking: what notation do you use in school for cosecant, cosec or csc or something else?

@JasperLoy Cosecant?
@JasperLoy We have cosine...

user19161
@Mahnax Oh, you don't know cosecant?

@JasperLoy What is it?

user19161
Cosecant, secant and cotangent are the reciprocals of sine, cosine and tangent respectively.

user19161
4:41 PM
So csc x is the reciprocal of sin x.

@JasperLoy Interesting. We've not used them.

user19161
Not to be confused with the inverse sine of x.

What purpose do they serve?

user19161
Just another convenient notation.

@JasperLoy Okay.

user19161
4:42 PM
Strictly speaking cot is not the reciprocal of tan but rather cos over sin, there's a subtle difference.

I remember having to learn the proofs of how sec^2 === (whatever it is), etc.
cos^2.sin^2?

@JasperLoy I noticed that when I Wikipedia'd it.

user19161
@Mahnax Not many pay attention to such detail.

@JasperLoy Well, I do.

user19161
But the truth is, one point can make the equation go wrong.

4:44 PM
@JasperLoy Is that a specific point or just saying it's sensitive?

user19161
It's sensitive. But those definitions defer in that they give different values at only some points.

user19161
So I'm saying both.

@JasperLoy I see.

user19161
For example, cos 90 over sin 90 is 0 while tan 90 is undefined so 1 over tan 90 is undefined as well.

@JasperLoy Interesting. I have a Physics test in second block.

4:48 PM
@Mahnax OK go study if you need.

@JasperLoy Me? Study?

user19161
@Mahnax Sorry I forgot you are a genius.

@JasperLoy I find that I just retain information well.
Anyways, I'm off. Farewell.

user19161
@Mahnax Good luck!

@matt You're home! Boyzone is nice too.

user19161
When drm and sim get active again maybe it'll be harder to get rep since they'll be answering too, so I must make this period count!

Q: "Forgotten" or "forgot" as past participle of "forget"

TimIn US and in UK respectively, which is more popular as the past participle of forget: forgotten or forgot? Which is more formal/informal? Examples: I haven't forgot(ten) you. You will not be forgot(ten).

user19161
I voted as gen ref. Only MW listed forgot. Barrie says it is archaic too. So these gen ref questions are not so gen ref after all, but still gen ref enough for me.

I like how the guy on MSO said that rep cap allows you to get a life outside SE!

6:24 PM
hmmm is the number 1 tag this month

yay! it's the best tag! I love guessing games.

5 hours later…
user19161
11:22 PM
@mahnax Boo!

11:38 PM
@JasperLoy Hello!

user19161
@Mahnax I see you have done some edits.

@JasperLoy Just a few.
@JasperLoy How are you?

user19161
@Mahnax Bad. It will be bad everyday until I recover from my conditions.

@JasperLoy What conditions?

user19161
@Mahnax I have OCD and PTSD, that's all I'll say here.

11:45 PM
@JasperLoy PTSD is rough, or so I've heard.
I wouldn't know because I've never had it.

user19161
@Mahnax That's why I was concerned when you said you were scarred for life that day. I did not know if you meant it as a joke.

@JasperLoy I see. It was a joke, around here it's very common for one to say that they were "scarred for life" as a joke. But I suppose maybe it shouldn't be used so lightly.

user19161
@Mahnax Yes, a lot of serious things are joked about to the point where many become ignorant of their severity.

@JasperLoy Sometimes I think that people my age (myself included) need to take a step back and think about what we're saying sometimes.

user19161
@Mahnax And you replied somewhat, so I thought there was some truth there.

user19161
11:50 PM
@Mahnax It's OK to joke about it but just know that these are real things. Having said that, you should avoid joking about it in front of some sufferers, not me.

@JasperLoy Well, let's just say that my parents needn't discuss certain aspects of their "personal" life in front of their children.

user19161
@Mahnax I see. I hope you sort it out within yourself.

user19161
Eight more minutes and I can vote again at GMT 0000.

@JasperLoy It's not traumatic, it's just not pleasant.

user19161
@Mahnax Shh, cheating should not be done so openly!

user19161
11:54 PM
Interestingly pleasant rhymes with presents somewhat in your last two sentences.

user19161
:2527550 No need, I'm just joking, though there is some truth in there.

user19161
So you see, a lot of things that I say here can be true and can be a joke all at once.

@JasperLoy I've noticed, I think.

user19161
@Mahnax Only my close friends can tell which of the four combinations it belongs to.

@JasperLoy I envy their understanding.

user19161
11:56 PM
@Mahnax I envy your sanity, please keep it intact.

@JasperLoy I can share, if you like.

user19161
@Mahnax Your sanity or your story?

@JasperLoy Sanity.

user19161
@Mahnax Thank you. Maybe one day I will write my life story into a book.

@JasperLoy I would read it.
