@Geobits I think its due to the font. Chrome/Chromium/IE/FF all render the same for me.

@Dennis aww you give up so easily?

@aditsu I'm not giving up, I'm joining forces.

Q: Create an executable

Beta DecayChallenge Write a program, which creates a standalone executable file which takes a Fourier program (file extension .4) and compiles it to an executable. Source Your source code must contain only the following characters: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz@#%&-+()*"':;!?,_/.][>

7:10 PM
ah, I was focusing on the 2nd part

@aditsu Well, to join forces, one of us has to incorporate bits of the other answer, and since you're currently ahead, it's only fair if it's you.
That's what I meant.

I'll think about it :p let me try to golf a bit more first

 Carrot

Discussion of the language, its development and golfing in it....

lol, there's a carrot language

7:17 PM
@VoteToClose It's impressive

I really didn't expect it to work. xD

watching Bob Ross..
The twitch chat is really annoying there

[hello world]-`` => 16 bytes - 16 * (1 - 2) = 16 - 16 = 0 bytes! XD

Uh.
You might want to use the actual percentage. ;)

I want to make a language that can validly interpret a song's lyrics :P

7:21 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Does Simplex have wraparound capability?

@VoteToClose ish. I have a command that I've never used, it's called the mirror: |.
That little bugger reverses the command flow.
I'm removing it because it makes my life writing an interpreter hell.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ See: Shakespeare

@VoteToClose I know of it, I just don't like it.
#hipster

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ If you're writing in JavaScript, you can practically steal my method for this. :D

@VoteToClose You wrote your interpreter in javascript too? :D :D :D :D

7:24 PM
No, Java - but they're mildly readable between. I just used arrays to define the position of things.
mildly

Right XD
I'm mainly talking about the interaction of bracketed expressions.

Oh! So, like, loops with instruction pointer directional-specific functions?
If you were using brackets, [ starts while when coming from the left, ends from the right, no?

Yeah, that's right
I know I could add some functionality to do it, but its not worth it for a single command.
That mirror mocks me every day I see it in my docs. |

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Why not just leave the functions always have the same affect? Then, it's the responsibility of the user.

The inverse is rawToChar(as.raw(n)) given an ASCII code n.
TIL no one cares.

It was a Lennipede
No
"Lennipede" is intended to be a portmanteau of "Lenny" and "centipede."

MINI-CHALLENGE: Make a program that outputs a Lennipede with size (from STDIN) that matches Alex's method of Lennipede generation.

8:01 PM
task 8: 35 -> down to 18 :D

@AlexA. btw, your gf watches one piece ?
@VoteToClose VTC as unclear. Define "Alex's method"

@VoteToClose My method of Lennipede generation was to find it on a really odd website dedicated to the Lenny face and copy/paste it here.

@VoteToClose It wouldn't work the way I've written it.

@Optimizer I don't think so because I haven't heard of it.

ok

8:02 PM
Not nearly as useful as disapprovallook.com

@Optimizer From the starred message - but meh. I'll make an actual challenge out of this.

I have a feeling @Calvin'sHobbies will disapprove.

I should make a Geobits bot that tries and guess if approves of a statement

some words missing

I got a 503 from disapprovallook.com: Exceeded the maximum global requests per minute for crawlers or humans. What is my life.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Before you do that, try to guess if I approve of that statement.

<Geobits Bot> I disapprove.

8:06 PM
soo, "I approve this statement" vs "I approve of this statement" - which is correct?

I wrote the bot in English.

Ok, sounds like this bot may have at least partial success.

@Optimizer Both!
English is weird

then why would someone put an extra "of" in a ppcg chat?

Not as weird as German. (Sorry @MartinBüttner, @flawr, @mınxomaτ, @Dennis)

either i'm getting better at brainfuck or i'm getting better at finding challenges that won't be hard in brainfuck

Without the 'of' it's more of a personal approval of the sentiment expressed. With 'of', it can simply be approving it without agreement. Or at least that's the way I read it.

> won't be hard in brainfuck
Isn't everything hard in Brainfuck?

I find this difficult to believe.

8:09 PM
because its brainfuck?
and everything is difficult

there's a challenge on this site that ,[>.+<-] would be a valid answer to

An infinite loop is easy.

my answer is a lot longer because i chose to work with decimal digits instead of inputting and outputting byte values

8:10 PM
literally any file is a valid brainfuck program

Yes, but ; is a noop
So it will output a null byte

that centipede thing reminds me of an interview with Sarah Silverman :p

ok, then that represents my level at brainfucking

check the drawing next to her head

8:11 PM
fun fact about the ,[>.+<-] program: it uses every instruction in the language exactly once

On a more relevant note, something should really be done about the tag. The tag excerpt (sp?) is literally a joke. And I'm not sure it provides any meaningful context to a challenge as is. Might be better as or similar. Thoughts?

@AlexA. Vulcans?
Or Yoda, perhaps?

thinking about giving a link... better not ^_^

at least 3 users here are aware of what goes on in 4chan

@aditsu its not, but the starrers got the reference

I suppose it's fairly popular there, but I visit very rarely

4chan is not popular anywhere in general

popular among 4chan users

maybe among terrorists .. (from recent news)

8:16 PM
I was talking about that concept being popular on 4chan

oh! I assume every such concept is popular on some sub 4chan

hi all
so.. the question is.. how can you usefully give a bounty for a catalogue question?

anyway, several have already been posted

hi @MartinBüttner
still amazed by the hours you put in here :)

8:30 PM
@Lembik Depends on the purpose.
@Lembik so am I...

Misread it. :D

@Lembik what kind of bounty exactly?

you know .. the bounty button
where you offer 50 rep for example
say I wanted to encourage more answers to codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/62426/…
which I do :)
because we need to know how to blit in every language :)

@Lembik You could offer a bounty for the person who submits answers in the highest number of languages that are shortest at the time the bounty expires

9:09 PM
Half rhyme or slant rhyme, sometimes called near-rhyme or lazy rhyme, is a type of rhyme formed by words with similar but not identical sounds. In most instances, either the vowel segments are different while the consonants are identical, or vice versa. This type of rhyme is also called approximate rhyme, inexact rhyme, imperfect rhyme (in contrast to perfect rhyme), off rhyme, analyzed rhyme, or suspended rhyme. == Use in hip hop/rapEdit == Half rhyme is often used, along with assonance, in rap music. This can be used to avoid rhyming clichés (e.g. rhyming "knowledge" with "college") or obvious...

@Rainbolt Um, really?? I have astigmatism too, but I don't want to squeeze my eyeballs to test it. I know squinting improves short sight just by restricting the field of view (so the blurring is less). You can get surprisingly good distance vision if you're short sighted by looking through a pin hole in a piece of card

> I don't want to squeeze my eyeballs
3
why not

um.. does everybody have astigmatism? do I?

Huh ... in my head, I always pronounced it pɪθ, as in "pithy"

@aditsu I've always said πþ.

9:11 PM
Despite past experience, I don't want to assume everything Rainbolt says is good advice
4

I don't think restricting your field of view magically makes the view you can still see less blurry. I think that's in your head. What makes it less fuzzy is you actually changing the shape of your eyeball when you squint and apply pressure to your eyeball using your eyelids.

@VoteToClose that depends on how you pronounce those 2 symbols :p

@Rainbolt No restricting the field of view has a definite explainable effect. I'll see if I can find a picture

@Rainbolt In searching for a picture I found this:
Pinhole glasses, also known as stenopeic glasses, are eyeglasses with a series of pinhole-sized perforations filling an opaque sheet of plastic in place of each lens. Similar to the workings of a pinhole camera, each perforation allows only a very narrow beam of light to enter the eye which reduces the size of the circle of confusion on the retina and increases depth of field. In eyes with refractive error, the result is claimed to be a sharper image. However, a second effect may appear at the common bridge between each two adjacent holes, whereby two different rays of light coming from the same...

@TimmyD Blink and you're dead

Let us define that a Fibonacci-type word (or FTW) is formed as follows: Commence with two arr...

@Rainbolt I can't find a useful picture now, but the explanation in words is that being short sighted means a point in the image you are looking at is focused to a small circle on the retina, instead of a point. The pinhole reduces the size of these circles, improving the clarity of the image. For me, it doesn't just make it feel better, it allows me to read things I couldn't without glasses otherwise.

9:23 PM
^ This
My right eye is very shortsighted; I can't read any of the words on this screen by squinting through it.
On the other hand, making a small hole by curling my finger allows me to read the text perfectly

@Justin The trouble is that we have two conflicting hypotheses - Rainbolt's being that the shape of the eyeball is changed by squinting.

Anonymous
@NewSandboxedPosts This is a perfect task for Python generators :)

@Justin Ah - that does seem more conclusive since the eyeball isn't being squashed

@trichoplax My point is that squinting doesn't allow me to see, but making a small hole does.
Yes

@Rainbolt maybe try this? ^

9:27 PM
(No idea how valid this is)
Umm that page suggests pinhole glasses as a substitute for prescription ones. I do not recommend obeying that suggestion.

In optics, a circle of confusion is an optical spot caused by a cone of light rays from a lens not coming to a perfect focus when imaging a point source. It is also known as disk of confusion, circle of indistinctness, blur circle, or blur spot. In photography, the circle of confusion (CoC) is used to determine the depth of field, the part of an image that is acceptably sharp. A standard value of CoC is often associated with each image format, but the most appropriate value depends on visual acuity, viewing conditions, and the amount of enlargement. Properly, this is the maximum permissible circle...

@Mego The pointer wraps around to the start in Befunge.

@Justin No that sounds like horrendous advice. I just find it useful to know for emergencies - I wouldn't want to give up my glasses...

@Dennis Yes, Safari.

No idea.

The last time I even saw an Opera icon on someone's computer was in 2007.

@Justin That looks quite nice and is perfect for my light sensitivity, but the spacing around the buttons at the top is killing me. :/

9:40 PM
That's what it looks like for me.

I don't like how it looks for chat.

@Dennis It's not very good, but it's better.
@AlexA. You can always turn it off.
Or you could write your own CSS stylesheet for it.

Yeah. That's assuming I'd be able to find a Safari equivalent.

@AlexA. Or you could switch browsers ;-)

I could write my own CSS stylesheet for it, if I knew CSS. Or anything. :P

9:41 PM
@AlexA. Just upgrade to Chrome.

@Justin cc @Dennis

There is literally only 1 thing I have against Chrome: its text isn't as sharp as other browsers. After about 6 years of using Chrome, I accidentally opened another browser, and every edge appeared sharp.

I use Chrome at work. I don't dislike it in any way; in fact, I prefer its handling of bookmarks to that of Safari. But I don't care enough to switch browsers.

Who needs bookmarks if you have tabs?

9:45 PM

@flawr People who don't want to have 1,000,000 tabs open all the time. :P

@DLosc It can be. /ˈsaɪθ/ is listed as a possible pronunciation, and it's how I pronounce it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scythe
