How does SO decide what tag to put in the page title?
(Aside: This new feature temporarily confused and disoriented me)

@Brant What's this? I know they were discussing stuffing primary tags in titles to improve search engine placement, but I don't see any change

I see it on SO and Gaming.SE now.

Q: Add-on that changes the Blizzard's font

Brian OjedaWhat is an add-on that will change Blizzard's font, both size and type, in World of Warcraft? It has to affect both the built-in Combat Scrolling Text and speech bubble. It has to be an add-on that only changes the font, not one that will replace Blizzard's Combat Scrolling Text. The reason I do...

The page title is "world of warcraft - Add-on that changes the Blizzard's font - Gaming - Stack Exchange"

Oh, right, I see it now. I thought they were going to stuff them into the post title instead of the page title, which would've sucked
I was going to guess it's either the first tag or the tag with the most instances, but neither appears to be true

3:58 PM
Yeah. It kind of makes my browser tabs look ugly, too. :(

You could throw something like this into a Greasemonkey script:
$('title').text($('#question-header > h1 > a:first').text() + " - " + $('a[href=/]').text());

Well, I don't mind the presence of the tag, just the capitalization (or lack of).

Q: Why is the first tag sometimes in the <title> tag of some questions?

The Unhandled ExceptionI searched through both Gaming's Meta and here, and couldn't find an answer to this. I was reviewing my questions on gaming.stackexchange.com this morning and I noticed that in certain questions like What is the effect of falling to your death in Metroid Prime 3, the <title> tag on that pag...

@Brant There are many places in SO that that bugs me, heh.

Hmm. Well, anything that knocks eFreedom, et al off the 1st SERP is alright in my book, I guess.

I rarely see them above SO except for android questions, where they seem to win all the time
It seems like a pretty massive failure on Google's part, honestly

Wow, this cable is a juicy one: ding.net/wikileaks/234867.txt

Q: Blog site for area51 sites.

C. RossOne of the biggest factors in involving people in SO was the blog and podcast. It provided some idea of what the site should be, pointed out interesting posts, and generally kept me interested. It's great for when you want to know what's going on, but don't have time to filter through things on...

Any thoughts?

Interesting idea. I've been using meta for the few times I wanted to post site information, but a blog would work too

we tried it on Gaming and didn't have a whole lot of success

I don't know that a blog would be much better; they both suffer from a lack of readers
You could probably just get by with a [blog] tag on meta

The real problem is that you need someone (or several people) who are good bloggers
not all of us are
Maybe we can get Grace to do it :-)

@CRoss Yeah, that's surprisingly difficult. I used to blog for my university, and while I could typically write well about a given topic, being regular about updates and actually generating the topics to begin with was a lot more troublesome than I had expected.

5:42 PM
@MichaelMrozek That's not a bad idea ...
maybe add a view on meta that shows it like a blog?

Grace Note -- official network-wide SE blogger. I like it
@CRoss That might work, and/or have blog.foo.stackexchange.com look like a blog but just pull posts from meta with the right tag

you could do [blog-proposed]
but how to handle blog comments? How to lock it so it wasn't editable ... etc

True. I'm trying to think of the simplest implementation, so there's a better chance of it actually happening. Probably an actual separate blog page would be best like the trilogy has, but that's also probably more work for the devs

2 hours later…
7:49 PM
@MichaelMrozek Unless they just host a wordpress (or whatever) site

@CRoss Oh, I guess the trilogy blogs are wordpress. I assumed they wrote their own thing

nope
just about the only out of the box thing

8:07 PM
And they chose a PHP system to boot, go figure.

Jeff has even said good things can be made in PHP
it's just hard

Heheh

9:02 PM
Hmm, I got logged out just now.

Turns out I did too, fail.
