I wonder if chat has stopped disliking me..
Let's find out....Hm, seems so. stops talking to himself now

@TimStone Disliking you in what way?

The whole logging me out every two minutes thing.

Ah. I've been having logout problems, but very rarely

This was the first time that it actually happened to me. Previously, I just had assumed it was a conspiracy against @rchern

@TimStone nah, we just changed targets.

5:44 AM
Hahah, I see.
At any rate, Marc said that he had an idea of where the problem might lie now, so he's going to look into it and hopefully it'll be resolved permanently.

@Michael @Tim I think I've fixed the logout issue. Either that, or everyone is permanently gagged now ;p

@MarcGravell Heheh, awesome! :D
@MarcGravell Also, don't know if you're aware, but this user made a sort of bot for chat over in the JavaScript room. Not sure if you care about that by itself, but I did mention to him to be mindful of his interactions with the server.

I'll take a peek...
thx

9:34 AM
Yep. He seems pretty well-intentioned himself, but that's I figure that's the kind of thing that could get out of hand, so thought it was worth a mention.

Q: Why do my questions never get answered on SU?

C. RossOk, so some of my questions get answered after a long time on SU, but many of my questions site idle for much longer than I'm used to on the SE network. I'm used to answer times of a day, not no answer in weeks. Am I doing something wrong? Are my questions not clear, or are they lacking some i...

now someone pick up that gauntlet

Q: Should the 'chat' link of a SE 2.0 site take you to the site specific chat room?

Srikant VadaliCurrently the chat link on SE 2.0 sites takes you to the area in chat with a list of all the chat rooms. However, I would imagine many users would expect to see the chat link to a room dedicated to the SE 2.0 main site. Should the chat link take you to the main room associated with each SE 2.0 s...

@CRoss because Super User is poorly targeted
Again, I don't think it'd have ever launched in an Area51 system.

@badp You mean too broad?

@CRoss Yeah, "everything with a question mark about computers that doesn't fit SO and SU and doesn't have the word 'game' in it"

5:08 PM
How would you narrow it down?
hardware, software, OS?

@CRoss Hardware sounds okay.

Poor Super User.

just don't say anything bad about macs if you are going by hardware ... man those guys can be grumpy

FWIW, I use (and favor) Macs, and that sort of thing annoys me too.

@Zypher Lets leave the religious wars to the teachers lounge
@Brant I'm not trying to hate on SuperUser ... just I want it to work

5:14 PM
haha there was a religous war there?

oh, yes

@CRoss Me too. Ever since it launched though, I've always had this image of its inception that involves everyone sitting around, shrugging their shoulders, and saying "Well shit, we've gotta do something about this non-programming PC crap that keeps popping up."
Which is/was true, but not really an auspicious beginning.
As opposed to say, "Oh man we're gonna make a Q&A site about programming and it's going to be awesome!"

yeah, or even a bunch of people banding together with "we want a site about ..."

5:52 PM
I imagine most people that use SU probably use tag views instead of just viewing all questions; it's too broad for that

and because of that, it has big freaking deadzones
which is apparently where I live

6:45 PM
next time we have an issue, lets just have executive fiat

@CRoss disagree
not because I disagree, just because it's the Gaming thing to do.

@badp I was wondering, since that's exactly what you proposed when I suggested we try this ridiculous experiment in democracy

Well, I'm officially sick of policy-making sausage for this week. Why don't we talk about kittens?

@CRoss - I'm honestly conflicted. I am opposed to game-rec, but it seems petty to fault the system because people voted against the option I support. That's the whole point of democracy.

@Brant Don't we have a policy about kittens on a turtle?

6:50 PM
@sjohnston democracy is overrated, mob rule and whatnot

@CRoss Being American, I have been told my entire life that "Democracy is the best thing ever and the only reasonable way to rule as dictated by God". So even though, objectively, I realize that in many cases non-democratic solutions work very well, I still have that knee-jerk "GO DEMOCRACY BILLOWING FLAG SOARING EAGLE APPLE PIE" reaction to decision making.

@sjohnston I'm American as well, and heard that a lot, but after reading a lot, and thinking about it
democracy wasn't even what the Founding Fathers wrote or intended

Democracy sucks! Let's remove the middle men! Lobbycracy!

6:55 PM
you wouldn't have things like the Electoral College or the states electing senators if they wanted democracy
furthermore, it sucks

16 messages moved from The Bridge

@CRoss Well, you have to consider that many of the policies for federal government were half-measures because the states had a great deal of sovereignty back then - the federal covernment had to make concessions just to get them to sign up for it.

Migration: 0 to dead in 15 seconds!

:(

@sjohnston Yeah, I don't know how you guys manage to even have a basic grasp of law in the US.

6:58 PM
@badp I don't think we do

@badp - Maybe you weren't aware, but nobody in the US actually has a grasp on it

Oh, okay. Fair enough.

@sjohnston I'm personally in favor of state sovereignty

So in how many states it is legal to stalk rchern?

I think it was intentional, not a difficulty to be worked around

6:59 PM
I suspect a minority of US citizens are even aware of the electoral college, despite the Al Gore - George Bush fiasco

now, American ignorance, that's something we can agree on

@CRoss - I honestly do not know enough about the history to comment much more

@sjohnston That seems highly unlikely, but I tend to overestimate people

@badp Where are you from? Southern Europe?

@CRoss we had to move the discussion away from the domain of Gaming to agree on something!

7:01 PM
ha

@CRoss Italy
The world's largest amusement park!
(Nobody said living in an amusement park is amusing.)

One thing I worry about is whenever we try to run the country based strictly on whatever we think "the founding fathers wanted". Firstly, they were about as agreeable as the regulars on gaming chat, and secondly, it's been a couple centuries, and it's quite possible that they didn't really cover everything that might apply in the modern day.

@sjohnston I'm not disagreeing

@badp Since I learned about the catacombs below Disneyland, living in an amusement park sounds terrifying

Whenever I see the "founding fathers" argument, I can't help recalling about the "What would Jesus do" jokes.

7:04 PM
but if we want another system then we should have another constitutional convention
@badp those aren't jokes ...

:/

anyway, I shouldn't have started this ... moving on now

@CRoss Don't feel bad, I start game-rec talks all the time and feel BAAAAD after doing so.

@CRoss - I don't see the system changing significantly without revolution. The combination of apathy and entrenched interests is far too powerful.
I don't see the problem with occasional random conversations on serious topics

@sjohnston I don't either, but when @badp starts talking about religion, I get scared

7:09 PM
REPENT YOU SINNERS.

7:32 PM
@Zypher that is awesome

8:14 PM
So I just read the updates to the Great Newline Math.SE Fiasco Of '010. I don't really know what to say, other than /facepalm

Why can't we leave math's troubles on their meta?

@CRoss I blame whoever linked to their Meta for me to read in the first place. :(

I need something to distract me from game-rec. :(

9:12 PM
@TimStone /blame badp

@CRoss I second this motion
