I believe it is a sub-domain which is (A) able to sustain it's own site and (B) capable of building its own community. Many people play go, but do not play other board games. Like chess. Grand master chess players probably aren't all that interested in monopoly strategies. Likewise with Go.
I understand that argument. The problem is that the Board Games site isn't going to attract Go enthusiasts. Thus, I will get no Go + SE action, and I will be sad
@sjohnston If you close the Go proposal telling people to use an existing site instead... well it may be a good impulse to tell people to stop waiting and start asking and answering instead.
Well, I guess I would argue that the Linux, Unix, Ubuntu thing proves that a distinct community is adequate reason for a separate site. And I still think that the broad nature of Board Games is unlikely to attract the hardcore Go audience that is required to answer moderately difficult questions with any level of quality.
@sjohnston My own issue primarily comes with the fact that I feel the Passive Voice is important and useful, and I very nearly failed freshman English with a professor who would dock points for every instance of the passive voice, even when legitimately used.
(i.e. when the actor is unknown or irrelevant to the story.)
But I also find that most of the rules, when applied reasonably, can be quite useful. I've seen lots of bad writing where I could specifically problems referenced by S&W. I have seen many examples of the "stupid" form of passive. Even though the article you linked seems to think that nobody is that dumb
@sjohnston It's not so much that the article thinks nobody is that dumb - it's that the article thinks that anyone that dumb isn't going to actually learn how to properly get better at it from S&W, because even S&W can't properly identify the passive voice.

Examples like "The bill was paid by me" are passive voice, and they do come up. What S&E neglect to mention is that there are useful examples as well. And that is a problem.
Anyway, I think the book can be useful. It is also apparently abused more than I was previously aware. I do not think it quite deserves the quantity of rage leveled at it. (Nor do I really understand directing any quantity of rage at a book).
By the way, am I the only one who's a little troubled by the Atheists proposal on Area51?
Like...I'm not really much into religion myself but there were a lot of comments from people who committed which sounded more than just a little bit inflamatory
Oh well, I guess we'll see what happens. I just don't want people who are religious seeing Atheism at the footer of each site and thinking that we as a network are against religious people.
I think the kind of people who would actually be offended seeing "atheism" in the footer would be equally offended by seeing "math", "physics", or "astronomy", which is to say, screw 'em.
The on-topic and off-topic example questions don't really convince me that the atheism site is going to work all that well as a stack exchange. Although I guess I feel like most subjective topics don't work that well as a stack exchange.
The key difference between Atheism.se and a christianity or judaism.se
is that the latter two have distinct lifestyles, cultures, rituals and observances about which one can ask objective questions, and get objective answers, before you even get into textual discussion.
Atheism by contrast, is basically just an invitation for threadshitting and flame wars from day one, and doesn't really fill any sort of void in the Q&A sense.
Whereas, I could for instance, see a very successful, if niche, Q&A site built around trying to hammer out the details of Jewish observance and answering questions about the application of talmudic law, preperation for festivals, etc. etc.
I don't think a no religion (or lack thereof) rule is the worst solution to the problem that an atheists.se poses, but the fact is that the problems posed by a proposal for an atheists site are in some ways unique to it, relative to other religious proposals, all of which have substantial room for content that does not grapple with the issues of an atheism site.
