Just checking, is asking questions to people normal American English? (I would ask questions of people, or just ask people questions.) Ref: judaism.stackexchange.com/q/48260/581. (The second sentence also has the pronoun changing: one ... he, but I've been told that that's acceptable in AmE.)

@TRiG Yes, AFAIK. And, English Language & Usage?

@Scimonster I asked the question here because I was thinking of editing the post. I'll leave it alone.

12:29 PM
@TRiG it sounds wrong to me. I'd say "we ask questions of," "we pose questions to," or, avoiding the preposition, "We have rabbis to ask when we have questions
."

@IsaacMoses It could be that my grammar standards are more lax than yours.
Especially with prepositions.

@Scimonster I'm describing my sense of correctness, not asserting a standard.

Highly likely, in fact. :P

@Scimonster Speaking lots of Hebrew can change for you your sense of prepositions :)
Also it can change that, also it can cause you to repeat certain words that we don't repeat in English.

@IsaacMoses That's one thing i don't do. One of the downsides to homeschooling... In fact, because of the way i often place a preposition at the end of a sentence, it ends up getting pretty awkward in Hebrew.

12:42 PM
@Scimonster Is your homeschooling taught in English?

@IsaacMoses Yeah.

@Scimonster Interesting. Do you speak Hebrew fluently?

@IsaacMoses Not that fluent. It's definitely improved over the past few years, but i'm nowhere near a native speaker.
My comprehension is better than my speech though.

@Scimonster Stands to reason.

Example sentence that i bungle: "Who are you talking to?" "מי אתה מדבר עם..." and then realize that the עם goes at the beginning... Of course, if i used "proper"/"old-fashioned" English grammar that wouldn't be such a problem.

12:55 PM
@Scimonster Do you do any writing in Hebrew? That could help train your instincts

1:16 PM
@IsaacMoses No, not really.

5 hours later…

Are there any new jersey residents here? Any insight on how reliable the NJ transit express buses are to new york during rush period?
In particular from Passaic?

@Daniel I think @MonicaCellio might be in NJ.

@Scimonster Nope
@Daniel You might get more mileage out of asking somewhere like reddit.com/r/newjersey ... or maybe Travel
@Daniel Here are users who say they're in NJ
... And Here for Jersey

6:28 PM
@Scimonster nope, sorry. I've been to New Jersey, but know nothing of their transit system.

4 hours later…
10:35 PM
@Daniel It has been a while since I used them, but they were reliable in my experience.
