5:00 PM
@ChrisS he is a she, and she got a nice 'how do you expect me to know yours and everyone else's passwords when it seems a single person can't remember just their own password'

@MikeyB I'm going to take a crack at writing a good storage tag wiki. Would you look over it for me?

@Basil It's probably best to include only the most generic storage topics in , then discuss more specific topics in other tags like

Wow, so @Basil is only like 2 weeks into being a member of SF and he's

1) Active in chat

2) Provides useful answers

3) Has participated in Meta

4) Wants to fuck with tags.

I'm impressed. I wish I could give him 10k of my rep. He'd probably do something with it instead of what I do with it, which is ignore the flag queue.

@ChrisS I agree, I'm reading the guide and trying to fit everything I write into the template
@MarkM 1 week, actually... I can't stop myself- help
@MarkM also, I'd debate 2)

@Basil There's a guide?

5:06 PM
Don't worry. I think trying to fuck around with tags will slow down your willingness to participate in all but the most filled chat convos.

haha

@BartSilverstrim Your wife is a fucking beast in words with friends. I call cheatsies.

?

@Iain Words With Friends is like Scrabble for iOS/Android.
I started a game with Bart a while ago and his wife started a game with me shortly after.
And she is murdering me.

ooh - sounds interesting

5:12 PM
So, I brought my iPad to work to test iOS connectivity with our RADIUS server authenticating our wireless users.
That was done by 10am. Now I'm playing Final Fantasty.
Today is awesome.

Get back to work, slacker!

hahahah the great retagging of to made me the 1st person to get the badge :)

I have nagios up on my 2nd monitor. That's doing work.
@Iain Now I know your real motives to all of this tag nonsense

It was a surprise to me as is the fact that only 12 people have it

@Holocryptic lol I love that

5:18 PM
@Iain I'm only 14 upvotes away.

I can't seem to find words about what types of questions should use the storage tag... aside from "Questions that should use this tag should be focused on storage problems. "

@Basil They should be questions about block storage in general, not specific to a particular implementation.

@hobodave I'm getting more and more memeish as I get older and more Internet inundated.

That's not how it's currently used
At this point, I'm trying to wiki the tag for how it's currently being used, now how it should be

@Basil should and is are often different in more ways than spelling

5:20 PM
@Holocryptic did you create that?

@hobodave yep

also, just because people ask a lot of mysql-on-a-local-drive-performance-woes-hurr questions doesn't make their stuff any less about storage.

Now you're starting to see why I avoid this tag madness

Well if part of the question is that they're open to changing their block storage strategy, then it would be covered by the generic

@MarkM Fuck the flag queue :P

5:24 PM
here:
"Because storage has such a wide definition, it can lead to a lot of very different questions legitimately using it. Instead of limiting the scope of questions that should use storage, please be descriptive with the rest of the tags so we know whether we're looking at an enterprise block level SAN question or a VMWare datastore on a local drive question."

@Basil that sounds reasonable

I threw in a "for example"

is definitely broad - it's like

I don't think the tag wiki's perform the function that was intended i.e. that people should read them before using them on a question

Broad, and about a quarter inch deep except about once a week when there's a crunchy question I actually have experience to answer
@Iain some do

5:26 PM
or better - . Yes - it's nice that the kernel is Linux. Now are you using the Debain Bastardization, the RedHat Bastardization, the SuSe Bastardization, the Ubuntu ReBastardization of Debian,...

well the first draft is made: serverfault.com/tags/storage/info
not sure who can see that if it's flagged, though

Looks good enough for a start - approved.

I approved it
NOT YOU

If you want to clean up a little maybe make a list of the other storage tags (Does [tag:xxx] work in tag wikis yet?)
Approved

Approved just now by voretaq7

I wasn't sure, and debated hard linking to tags

5:32 PM
Links to some of the other tag wikis would be super awesome. =]

(I bet your screen says the same thing with your name in there :P)

serverfault.com/suggested-edits/3449 says "Approved 2 mins ago by voretaq7"

Wait, what the hell did i approve then

haha

5:33 PM
@Basil I think it makes sense - is really kind of a meta tag, and if that's the only storage-related tag on there people answering should really clean it up

@MarkM My automatic monthly withdrawal from your checking account? :)

Damnit, I only approved the excerpt.
Fucking tags.
3

lol; you each got half!

@MarkM oh yeah I didn't look at the excerpt
@ChrisS Wise King Solomon divided the tag approval in half?

5:35 PM
oh hey, the link for related tags changes- like linux is "storage+linux"

(How does that work? Do you get half the baby by weight? volume?)
2

(I want the outside half)

@voretaq7 damn you, I was just looking for a pic of that to drop in

@voretaq7 "Wise King Chris" has a nice ring to it...

@Holocryptic A google image search for "King Solomon" baby +chainsaw reveals nothing of interest :(
2

5:41 PM
@voretaq7 was it you that mentioned chainsaws the other day? Or Render? I can't remember
@voretaq7 Either way, you're disturbed, sir.

so if there's another annoyingly general tag, should I link to it like serverfault.com/questions/tagged/storage+performance?
or should I link them all that way?

Performance is a bad tag

@Holocryptic Don't disturb the man when he's chainsawing up babies!

storage performance isnt
or should I make it "storage-performance"?

@voretaq7 Its so fascinating though!

5:44 PM
storage + performance shows all questions that are tagged with both tags. performance itself is a stand-alone tag in that case.
You probably want storage-performance

@Basil yes, they're separated by '-'

what's "storage performance"? (High read throughput? high write throughput? high IOPS? Blazing fast speed with 99% cache hits?)

as for whether or not that's a good tag, i dont know.
fuck tags, remember?

pretty much every question on SF is performance related on some level

One sec, let me go re-tag everything on the site with .
3

5:48 PM
@voretaq7 high iops, low latency.. I guess? throughput is moot 99% of the time :)

I'm repcapped. Someone else chime in with "Stop trying to outsmart the scheduler"

Q: How can I move a process to a core or dedicate a process to a processor?

RobotoI have an Intel E5620 processor. I have used cat /proc/[pid]/stat to determine what processor the process was last run on (39th field). How can I ensure that a process is dedicated to a processor (I have 8 available) or better yet, how can I dedicate a process to a core (I have 4)?

@MarkM I refuse to answer it - I simply question his/her right to exist in a comment.

I'm more ignorant about this site's workings than I thought, I just noticed there were 2 seperate Tims, but I guess that is because they are unregistered

There can be dupes
Jeff didn't want people to be MarkM1234
The gravitar/profile/amount of rep separates users with the same name

So what you're saying is

5:53 PM
@MarkM I sure as hell don't want to be MarkM1234. Have you seen that guy? He wears a space helmet, FFS.

I can be MarkM, and then tarnish your reputation!?

Yeah, what a freak
You could, except there's not much left to tarnish.

becomes Jeff Atwood

@MarkM I had to be unique in my answer.

Q: Why does Stack Overflow allow duplicate display names?

John MacIntyreWhat is the reasoning behind the design decision to allow users to create a display name which matches another existing users exactly? This is opposed to the common practice of enforcing unique user names, and I'd really like to learn something.

5:55 PM
@Shads0 it figues out which Tim is which by the email address used to log in

@Iain He was just surprised that duplicate user names were allowed

so I've added a list of tags to the storage tag

The more you know Rainbow

approved

5:57 PM
@Basil Oh btw, just saw your message. No problem!

DAMNIT! I never get to approve anything other than excepts

@MikeyB No worries- if you have any suggestions, it's a wiki so you can simply do them. I put down the bare bones, and am unsure about the direction to take it from here

everyone answering taskset to that dedicated CPU question - I don't think that command does what you think it does (it sets the process CPU affinity - so the PROCESS can't leave the CPU. Unless it does some other funky stuff the scheduler can still put OTHER processes on that CPU...)
…unless CPU affinity behaves differently on Linux versus the BSDs?

Anyone know how to see how many edits you've done? I need to know how bad I'm gonna flood the front page when I decide to get copy editor in one sitting.

6:00 PM
@Basil Oh I'm totally editing that up :) But good baseline.

58 edits.

@MikeyB It's supposed to be succinct and general, afaik

@MarkM that's a lot of editing to do for your copy-editor

brace yourselves

Is there an easier way to correctly mark up:
**HBA**<!-- -->s
should look like:
<b>HBA</b>s

6:03 PM
@MarkM I've noticed a bit of lag on that page (like updated every few hours or something) but the gist is there. Also, not sure if that counts tag-only edits, which don't count towards the badges.

back in a few. time to yell at ms support some more

I don't recall if just editing tags counts as an edit

@Iain no it doesn't
For badge purposes at least. Not actually sure if that number on that page is bumped or not though

indeed - which is why I didn't get it after the great[tag: vmware] retagging exercise

I got taxonomist for because of that :-)

6:05 PM
@Iain It does pop up the Q on the front page; it does not count as an edit for any statistics/badges.

<b>boobs</b>

I AM DISSAPOINT

@Basil Oh nice: [tag:san] also works on the main site. Don't have to provide individual links for each tag, BTW.

*sigh* So Mr. Dedicated CPU just wants low-latency processing. And instead of `nice -20` and `rtprio` he jumps right to "Let me fuck with the scheduler because OBVIOUSLY the brilliant people who write OS schedulers know far less than I do about dealing with processor-intensive workloads".

I. Want. To. Hurt. People.
5
Do these people SERIOUSLY have NO concept of how Unix works? Have they never cracked open a syscall reference?
ok, I'm done seething now.

@voretaq7 that's a lie

Opinions: Is the following better than just a big list of tags?

- Architectures: [tag:san] [tag:nas] [tag:das]
- Protocols: [tag:iscsi] [tag:fibre-channel] [tag:sas]
- Filesystems: [tag:filesystems] [tag:zfs]
- Performance: [tag:storage-performance] [tag:iops]
- Drives: [tag:raid] [tag:hard-drive] [tag:ssd]
- NAS protocols: [tag:nfs] [tag:cifs]
- [tag:storage-hardware] [tag:network-storage] [tag:storage-networking]
- [tag:backup]
- [tag:tape]

6:22 PM
@voretaq7 - I firmly believe in trying to educate people but some people don't want to be educated. At that point, rather than ramp up your blood pressure trying, I fully recommend cracking open a tall cold $*beverage of choice* and enjoy watching them run aground on the rocks of their own stupidity

I swear the chat markdown gets worse over time :/

shit. Is 230 and I used my vote allowance

@BenPilbrow The parser just shakes its head at me nowadays 💩.

@MikeyB arg, I knew it!

@MikeyB and Firefox gives me an icky square for that character
Grrr

6:26 PM
@MikeyB I'd like that more. I didn't think of it because my brain is caffein deprived.

@BenPilbrow same here on Chrome

Did @djangofan edit the wrong question? serverfault.com/suggested-edits/3453
@BenPilbrow You probably don't have enough fonts installed.
17 hours ago, by MikeyB
SERIOUSLY???
128169 1F4A9 💩 Pile Of Poo
We have a Unicode character for 'Pile Of Poo' and not Stargate gate addresses??? Fail.

Since when did you have to give a reason to reject an edit?

I didn't.
I just rejected two. That one and: serverfault.com/suggested-edits/3452

Whaaaat

6:30 PM
@Holocryptic It means next to nothing. 1st and 2nd order rainbows occur with the sun at your back. To see 3rd and 4th order rainbows, you have to look at the sun, but they're so faint and so close to the sun that you can't normally see them.

I just rejected that djangofan one and it asked me why I was rejecting

Oh, the big multiple-choice box? Sorry, I had to do that. Duh... I was thinking 'typing in a reason'.

Yeah
That's new (ish)
It was simple enough, why complicate it

Hey guess what guys? Mr. Dedicated CPU actually has a valid use case for what he's doing.

This one shows the internal reflections for various orders: atoptics.co.uk/rainbows/orders.htm

6:32 PM
@BenPilbrow Because when your edits are rejected, it's nice to have feedback as to why.

@MikeyB meh OK, I get that, I suppose, it just seems like more friction for not so much gain

@Ward You need to catch up on the Internets. youtube.com/watch?v=OQSNhk5ICTI

@BenPilbrow I disagree. If you're rejecting it, it's good sense to at least ask you why. It's hardly any friction. Though it's be nice to be able to type in a reason.

@Holocryptic Double is nothing, we get them all the time (it rains a lot)

@ChrisS Finally got an answer from Microsoft about the SSL + PEAP stuff. Apparently since the wildcard certificate doesn't have the fqdn of the server in the Subject Name field, the Windows clients reject it, even though the server is specifically listen in the SAN field and should be covered by the wildcard anyway.
That's a nice little tidbit that they leave out of their documentation

6:35 PM
@Ward ... You're no fun.

@MikeyB gah, I'm being very grumpy lately. Very stressed out by moving house AND starting a new job in a couple of weeks, so I'm going crazy tying loose ends up and stuff

@BenPilbrow Oh, of course, no explanation required. But I hear you - that's a lot going on.

@MarkM Interesting... You'd think their Crypto API has just one set of functions for verifying x509 certs. That is obviously not the case...

@ChrisS The MS wireless clients call the x509 verify api with the parameter persnickety=True

moving far mate?

6:38 PM
The SN of the certs is *.schoolname.edu and you can't change that when you request a duplicate from digicert. The MS guy recommended getting one with the SN equal to the server name and have the wildcard in the SAN. I was like, uhhhhhh, I don't think digicert will do that.

Not that it matters either way for the old stress levels

I think it's the msEnableProprietaryExtendedFeatures=True knob

@MarkM That's some pathetic implementation.

Yup.

6:42 PM
@RobertMoir I literally moved down the road (moved in with a friend) and the new job is about 20 minutes closer to home (I am going to save SO much money in petrol it's going to be unreal). Things are looking good :-)

fair enough
so you should be nice and settled into the new job and all by Christmas, all good stuff

HP's Jargon Watch this week: Kluge - Originating in the 1960's, the term describes a clever programming trick intended to solve a sticky problem in an expedient manner.
I thought it was more along the lines of an obtuse or ugly programming "trick" which the author knows will induce problems in the future, but is necessitated by some current requirement.

@ChrisS That's the subtext of "clever".

Is that programmer's doublespeak?

I thought all they dealt with is doublespeak?

6:49 PM
@ChrisS the jargon file has a lot to say about it outpost9.com/reference/jargon/jargon_26.html#SEC33

@ChrisS I'd say so. Most programmers that I know would gladly admit that an "expedient, clever trick" is extremely likely to be one ugly mother.
Haha. Some observers consider this mess appropriate in view of the word's meaning.

I go to all the trouble of including all the important bits of information (exact card, serial number, server type, etc) when creating the ticket. So far he's asked me for them again over the phone. "It's in the ticket."

@RobertMoir You can lead a whore to Vassar, but you can't make 'em think.

@MikeyB I hate that. I feel the same way when I enter crap on the phone directory, only to be asked it again....

@Holocryptic I felt a little bad for the guy, he was getting all flustered :)

6:56 PM
OH SHIT @voretaq7 I GOT THE CHECK MARK. BOO YA
4
A: Integrity, Confidentiality and VPS

MarkMIf you aren't in direct physical control of a machine, then there's no way that you can ever be 100% sure.

OH THE IRONY

That's a TL;DR indictment if I've ever seen one.

Greetings TCR.
I'm cold, tired, and have been stitched up twice today. Where's the boobs?

@MikeyB I know the feeling

(o)(o)

@Iain Interesting, I always pronounced it as though it rhymes with judge. That's the only way I've heard other people say it too.

6:57 PM
@ChrisS ditto

I've only ever heard it pronounced kloo-dged

@MarkM :-P
@MarkM @ChrisS @Iain I prefer "Bodged" myself.

Funny when words are pronounced so differently in different areas... like route.

Mmm...tubers.

@ChrisS Or how they're US routes (roots), but packets are routed (row-ted)

7:00 PM
@voretaq7 Cross the pond and you'll not find many that say 'row-ted'

@ChrisS …Which is why we handed their ass to them back in 1776.

@voretaq7 bodge is unintentional where as kludge is intentional

@voretaq7 My networks prof in grad school went on for about 30 minutes on that one.

(War of 1812? Never happened!)

I think I heard it in the IT Crowd called roo-ter

7:01 PM
@ChrisS i pronounce route as root

@Iain I vary from day to day. Sometimes within the same conversation.

@Iain Yeah; and you're across the pond. Which was my point. Over here a computer route is pronounced 'row-ted' (something like that anyway)

@ChrisS "Our route (rowt) today takes us along historic route (root) 66…"

@ChrisS wr-ow-ted

^What they said

7:03 PM
what a weird conversation

We're Americans damnit - we do everything different from the rest of the world. Now give me the dimensions of that funky "letter" paper in inches, none of this A-sizes in millimeters bullshit!

the only thing I pronounce as rowter is the woodworking tool

The word has too many uses... that's the problem.

@Iain Well if you shove a stick in the power supply fan of that Cisco device...
2

I'm surprised 'nerf' isn't in the Jargon File, but I suppose droolproof paper is close enough.

7:16 PM
@ChrisS "nerf" like the darts, or "nerf" like "nerf mages!"

@voretaq7 Both... The first is a noun, the second is an verb/adjective/adverb

I don't think the noun is really jargon. And the verb form is gamerspeak more than geekspeak, no?
then again I think the geek code now includes "Geek of Gaming"

@voretaq7 Dude, they never should have nerfed mages.
Specifically the sorceress's Frozen Orb in Diablo II

@MarkM Hush up you. I've been a Warlock on WoW and a Necro on EQ, and mages are OP!

@voretaq7 Ret paladins and BM hunters really got it in wow
@voretaq7 Locks are OP right now

7:26 PM
@Basil Warlocks didn't get any worse because we can't?

nerds

@voretaq7 They're top DPS and most overpowered in PvP this patch.

@Basil They're SUPPOSED to be a high DPS support class - it's us AND A FRIGGIN PET!

Yeah; I'm glad I'm not into WoW...

also nobody can bitch to a warlock about PvP - Rogues stun us and we're dead less than 2 seconds later.

7:27 PM
@voretaq7 Half my raid is locks and hunters, and they're all top on the charts.

@Basil your mages suck.
also remember that the warlock DPS and Damage Dealt is all curses.

@voretaq7 So you're saying that everyone who doesn't play a rogue can complain, just not the rogues?

2 mins ago, by MarkM
nerds
2

@voretaq7 not any more- locks take a shit-ton less damage than other classes because their pets (which can be insta-ressed 5 times) provide them so much damage reduction

@Basil That's what the pet is for.
@ShaneMadden in PVP nobody is allowed to complain to a caster who has to be within sprint-and-stun distance of a rogue to do any damage.
we can't even fear-kite them to keep 'em off us because of the diminishing returns

7:30 PM
In PvP, nobody's allowed to complain except a hunter. LoS and minimum range, as well as being constantly focus starved.
and our CC is a freaking trap

@Basil locks still don't HAVE CC.

@voretaq7 That's what the pet is for :p

The succubus stripping doesn't count. though it's entertaining...

@voretaq7 they don't need it- they're still represented on 70% of the top comps

@ShaneMadden Unless they fixed it pets can't hold aggro for shit once you're above like level 45

7:32 PM
@voretaq7 They tank just fine now for leveling.

@Basil as long as you stick to curses and no more than 2 pulls at a time. And as long as the mob doesn't run away when health drops to go get more friends...

This is NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask questions on the main site; This IS a place for World of Warcraft wonkery

::crotchety:: I remember the good ol' days where I could have 5 pigs attacking my little blue buddy, and he would take the damage and he would LIKE it!
@wfaulk Don't make me turn you into a newt...

You go right ahead with that. I'll let you know if it works

@wfaulk I'm a professional WoW wonk.

7:36 PM
I once played WoW for about 30 minutes before I got bored and deleted the binary

I need to get back into WoW.

@Holocryptic Famous last words.

@Holocryptic Wait for the next expansion

@wfaulk I retired - I got sick of killing the SAME pigs over and over and over...

@ShaneMadden And I manage to keep it all afloat- you just have to be disciplined about your time.
@voretaq7 they made the rush to 85 a joke- you can do it in a week or two, and then you get the new raid content every 3 months

7:40 PM
@Basil "Aww, stay on for one more attempt, we've almost got him down!"

@ShaneMadden Not in my guild. I run it with a rule of "if it hits 11 PM, even if we're half way through an attempt, we wipe it and hand out DKP"
@ShaneMadden We're all adults with jobs and kids. Two nights a week, 2.5 hours a night. Not a minute more.

@Basil Solid.

@Basil but... see... I have a life. I don't raid.

@voretaq7 This occupies the same part of my life that a poker night or beer league occupies in my non-nerd friends' lives.

and I can't commit to a set schedule for gaming - it's entertainment. You schedule it and now it's work
I can't commit to a set schedule for poker or beer either

7:43 PM
@voretaq7 That's the other rule in my guild- no mandatory attendance. You raid when you can, and don't when you can't.

@Basil I think I want to join your guild

@Holocryptic we're recruiting, but you have to pay your own transfer fees :P

@Basil what server? :P

@voretaq7 drenden US

man, that's all the way at the top of the list.

7:45 PM
it's medium population, so I can make tons of money on the AH, but it's very casual about raiding and pvp

Medium population.. I wonder what that would be like. I played on Illidan.

@Basil The only thing that sucks for me is I only have one 85 at this point (I've been busy, don't judge)

@Holocryptic I only have one 85...
@Holocryptic I judge people who have more than one, to be honest :\

heh
@Basil whats your main's name. If I transfer or start a new toon I'll hit you up

@Holocryptic I'm only logged in for raid times- email me when you transfer and I'll make a point of logging in
@Holocryptic basilberntsen@gmail.com

7:48 PM
@Basil My main is somewhere in the 70s I think

@voretaq7 if you start again, you'll be 85 in 4 days

@Basil If I start again I'll kill pigs for an hour or two, get fed up and quit in 2 days :P

@Basil got it

You seriously underestimate my distaste for "Hey adventurer, you're new here. I've got this pig problem..."

@voretaq7 heh, there's less of that these days, and you can also get to 85 solely through the dungeon finder and PvP

7:50 PM
(it's around that point that if this were real life I'd grab the inkeeper's head and twist it off like a Barbie doll...)
@Basil eh? you get xp for PVP?

random BGs award very good experience

when did that happen? I don't PvP much
oh battlegrounds pvp - yeah

there's also gear that scales with level now

@Basil . . . so my cloth boots from my ab initio training as a new baby warlock might be worth something now? :)

Last time I was dealing with a storage quote, we had a guy on the team who loved pitting the vendors against each other. "Hey, EMC said you guys were bad at this!"
