3:18 AM
@aediaλ Ya it seems to be fine now, for good. But maybe it will return to haunt me again.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 I've been saying this to myself quite a lot probably under your influence.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 You have problems loading chat like I had?

user19161
It has been raining cats and dogs here, very weird.

@Jasper finally I speak to you! how is it going?

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Well, at least my problem of getting chat to load seems OK now. I hope you are doing well in school and at home too.

3:27 AM
well... I think it would be better to live in the internet....
seriously, my life sucks...

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog If you have any serious problems just talk to someone and get it sorted before it worsens.

laugh I seriously doubt that that will help. combination of low-self asteem and unlucky daily life can do wonders...

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog esteem, laughs (we use this form of the verb to denote action here) Then you should work on your esteem then, and figure out which are the unlucky parts.

Q: Does anybody want to help with the Grammar Girl interview?

Lauren ΨAs I said in this meta post, we're going to be on the Grammar Girl podcast. I think a great way to attract her listeners to our site would be to do an interview with her before hand and write it up on our blog. I know a few people have expressed interest in writing for the blog, so I was hoping t...

user19161
Check it out for those interested.

7:03 AM
good morning EL&U.

user19161
@MattЭллен Morning Matt! I chanced upon a beautiful new park yesterday, and on Sat night I watched the raindrops trickling down the glass roof of the shopping centre, it was beautiful.

That sounds pleasant, @Jasper. I had a lovely Sunday afternoon with my family in the countryside. It was a glorious day :)

user19161
@MattЭллен Jolly good, now back to work, no skiving!

user19161
Fedora 16 beta will be out in a few hours, yum yum...

8:03 AM
is this a question about English?

Q: Interposed cross references to sections in disposition

N.N.In writing a short description of the disposition as part of the introduction in an academic paper what is the proper way to interpose cross references to sections? Here's two construction I can come up with. If parentheses are used they might be distracting if they occur often: I will start...

I can't tell if it's a legitimate question about punctuation or a proofreading question

Q: Meaning of "eyes with a lot of lashes"

AnaisiaWhat is the meaning of this syntagma: "eyes with a lot of lashes"? I found it in "The Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton, in the description of one of the characters: Count Olensky.

2 hours later…
user19161
10:18 AM
@MattЭллен It also depends on how the question is phrased and how we choose to perceive it. I think I will keep the question, since it is well-written (and I also like the OP).

user19161
@MattЭллен Done.

user19161
10:31 AM
Hi @hugo!

@Jasper Fair enough. I'm gonna leave it, since I can't decide

user19161
@MattЭллен Aye. It should be lunch soon for you and dinner for me.

Hi @Jasper! I'm not sure if "Meaning of "eyes with a lot of lashes"" is general reference, I think the asker might not know if it's a literal description or an idiom of some sort.

user19161
@Hugo Hmm OK. Anyway from your answer, it seems literal then?

@Jasper Yes, that's what Wikipedia suggests and I've not heard of any such idiom.

user19161
10:38 AM
@Hugo OK, but that is what Matt meant when he wanted to close it. But nvm, no need to get a headache over this matter. I see you have been doing many edits recently.

@Jasper: @Hugo: Hi

user19161
@SankarGanesh Hello. I hope you have made progress in your poetry. Take care of the English first and the rest will follow.

@Jasper Hmm Thanks for not forgetting me , i came here to improve my communication skills and also share a prob(my feelings) to you guys

@Hugo Since you've answered with an excerpt from Wikipedia, that screams "gen ref" at me. If the asker has a deeper question, they should ask it.

user19161
@MattЭллен I didn't know Wikipedia can scream.

10:46 AM
@Jasper Wikipedia can't. The question can ;p

user19161
@MattЭллен I can't really scream anymore. Just can't push the sound to that range, though Mariah can do very high notes. Her air passages are special I guess.

@Jasper: Are you busy dude?

user19161
@SankarGanesh Why?

@Jasper Just want to share one thing to you guys?

user19161
@SankarGanesh OK. Some poem again?

10:49 AM
@Jasper Nope this time no poem about my new frnd , i was not able to understand him

user19161
@SankarGanesh OK so what do you want to share with us?

@Jasper i was confused and i need your guys advice , bcoz i m confused , when you came to know full thing you understand , why i want to share
@Jasper: if your free , i will share my feel otherwise i wonot bcoz i donot want distrub you guys

user19161
@SankarGanesh It's OK just go ahead, though bear in my mind everyone can read the transcript.

@Jasper hmmm , my question is , when someone say your sentimental person , is sentimental person is a bad person or good person?

user19161
@SankarGanesh The adjective "sentimental" on its own is pretty neutral. Also, whether something said can be positive or negative depends on the context as well.

user19161
10:56 AM
Additionally, someone who is not very good at the language may say things in a way he did not intend.

user19161
So you need to take all these into consideration.

@Jasper: ok dude Thanks

user19161
@sankar And if you really want to know or need to know, just ask your friend. A lot of mistakes in the world are due to wrong assumptions about people or things.

@Jasper: i cannot bcoz he is teasing me a lot , he never tease others he teasing me only and also instantiates other office mate to tease me , since it is a public place i cannot tel full incident i may counsellings myself , i m saying just simile

user19161
@SankarGanesh I think a question is harmless. In any case, decide for yourself. For what is a man, what has he got, if not himself, then he has not

11:05 AM
@Jasper Meanwhile my frnd has showing care on me too... , it was triable to face such a guy in my life for the first time, teasing a lot , and also ask others to tease me and showing care on me , headache for me , can i have your email id or skype or twitter ??

user19161
@SankarGanesh Hmm, let's just talk about things here for now. But seriously I think you should just talk to your friend about it. No point guessing and imagining things yourself.

@Jasper when i went to talk with him , he's playing , i m saying to him be serious i hurted then he again similes and divert me from that topic
@Jasper: why you not sharing your skype or twitter or gmail id, is there any probs for you dude ??

user19161
@SankarGanesh Well, I don't know you that well.

@Jasper ok no issues

user19161
@SankarGanesh Just be direct and say whatever you want to say. If he always avoids answering then just forget it in my opinion.

11:15 AM
@Jasper i got panic when he did like that, tell me how to avoid panic?

user19161
@SankarGanesh Simple: just don't panic. Calm down, take a deep breath.

@Jasper: finally i decided not to take care of others words and i will stop speaking with them slowly by slowly

user19161
@SankarGanesh Many people don't mean what they say or say what they mean. Know that. Good luck to you. Life is difficult.

@Jasper Thanks i simply ignore those things, just now i remembered my grandma's words, take good from others and forgot their badthings , memory is a sweet one when you remember gud things , that same memory will like fire , when you remember bad things of others , so consider only the gud things they have done to you, Remember their to help to you and forgot their bad actions
@Jasper: So i will follow my grandma's voice , thanks jasper for spending your time with me and you recollected my grandma's words

user19161
@SankarGanesh I actually disagree with your grandma. I think we should look at the good and bad of each person instead of pretend it is not there.

user19161
11:24 AM
And then you can choose what you want to do with that person. But that choice must be made based on full consciousness of reality and not self-deception.

user19161
Yes, we can look at the same thing in different ways, but we cannot simply throw some part of truth out of the window just because we do not like it.

@Jasper I believe that one day will come , at that time they realize, that eventhough teased he's the frnd who will be always with us whether we meet problems or not

user19161
@SankarGanesh It is hard to understand what you are saying because your English is not good, but I try to guess. Hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.

@Jasper dude what i said is , Time will come , they will also got problems at that time they must realize that , good friends are always stay with us when we meet problem , eventhough we hurt that friend a lot

user19161
@SankarGanesh OK now I get it. Take care. Keep doing your best but do not struggle. The rest will follow.

11:35 AM
@Jasper Bye Take Care, :)

11:57 AM
@Cerberus: and @Hugo: Hi dude

12:54 PM
gouda morning

@MrShinyandNew安宇 hi gud morning dude

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Briesed to see you!

@MattЭллен Ok your cheese is better than mine.
how is everyone today?

I'm not sure I've had gouda. I just had some brie for lunch :)

I rate myself as "spiffy" with a hint of "annoyed with politcs"
@MattЭллен Really, I meant your cheese joke was better. I actually like gouda way more than brie.

1:00 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I m not fine dude, LOL

It's sorta half-way between mozzarella and cheddar.

@Jasper: welcome back, :)

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Bad, as usual. Hope your cough has gone away.

@SankarGanesh Yes I noticed you were complaining about a "friend" who is teasing you. It's difficult to give advice though without more information. But if this "friend" is making jokes at your expense, so that others laugh at you, they are not a friend and you should just try to avoid this person.
@Jasper No, it's still there. I just don't type all the coughs into the chat room, cuz that's frickin' tedious.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You need some benedryl aka dipenhydramine then.

1:03 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Good with a tint of anxiety about getting into Taiwan on Saturday since I don't have a physical return ticket, only virtual one.

@Jasper No, I don't think that will help. It will just make me sleepy.

((HUGS)) @Jasper

user19161
@MattЭллен Holiday?

@Jasper Aye :)

user19161
@MattЭллен ((HUGS))

1:03 PM
@MattЭллен ah yes, virtual tickets. They make me anxious too. Actually, all airport travel makes me anxious because it's so fraught with annoyance.

user19161
@MattЭллен Enjoy yourself! Perhaps one day I will visit you too.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 thanks mate for sharing your views

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah. I find all the regulations quite perplexing.

user19161
@matt So we won't see you here for a few days?

user19161
@sankar Hang in there. Life is difficult.

1:05 PM
@Jasper I probably won't have access for 3 weeks

user19161
@MattЭллен You are not staying in a place with internet?

but we'll see. I'm visiting a friend, so I might get online while I'm staying with him

user19161
@MattЭллен I would think that internet is available unless you are going to a really rural area.

@Jasper i just go ahead with @MrShinyandNew , i may try to avoid speaking with that guy , so that he can realize my friendship and care , :)

@Matt, I think the chat room will survive without you, don't interrupt your vacationing (vacationing? vacating?) to come to a chat room.

1:07 PM
@Jasper True. I might just avoid computers all together! I work at a computer all day, after all :)

@Jasper and @Matt: and @MrShinyandNew: since i new can you guys tell about yourself

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Indeed.

@SankarGanesh The brief descriptions you wrote above make me think this person may be a bully. The worst thing you can do for a bully is to show fear or pain or humiliation. If this is hard for you, just avoid them.

Hey foks. Any EL&U mods around?

user19161
@SankarGanesh I have nothing to say about myself to you now. My life is too intense, not appropriate to be discussed here.

1:09 PM
@SankarGanesh I'm a software developer.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 And not a church worker, as I learnt.

@Caleb Not here, it seems, what do you need?

We have a new genre of questions popip up on Christianity.SE today. I was wondering if it might make any sense to edit them to be more EL&U apropriate and migrate them over here. one and two.

@Jasper heheh I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was a church worker :) But I was an altar-boy as a child.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 me too a software developer, what platform you working dude? also tell me , bully in the sense

1:10 PM
If edited to be just the "were did these originate" part, would those be welcome questions here?

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes I remember. Simply because you posted some picture here with questions about God, remember?

@SankarGanesh I'm a bearded creature

@MattЭллен ok cool what you do for living dude?

Hm, the origin of the phrases. Well, the only concern I have is that those questions might get closed as general reference if the answer is easily found in Google. People around here wield the Gen-Ref hammer quite harshly.

user19161
@Caleb I am fine with those questions taken here myself.

1:12 PM
@Jasper oh that, that was just an internet pic that was in my Google Reader recomendations

@Caleb If they're not duplicates, not found in any well known internet reference sites, and English, then I think it's likely they will be accepted.

The "cleanliness" one has an answer in the first google hit for "origin cleanliness is next to godliness", I can't say if that answer is correct, but if so, it'd be gen-ref

user19161
@matt I will miss you. Have fun! I will try not to email you the next few weeks, though I have nothing to say now.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I remember reading that in Great Expectations.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Please don't get upset. "recommendations"

1:15 PM
The "God helps those..." one also has several google results, which all indicate that it's from Aesop or some other old source, so I think both questions are likely to be closed, unless someone indicates a problem for those sources

@Jasper I don't think I'll have access to my email accounts. They're somewhat tied to my home PC (simply because I can't remember all the details), but you can still send emails, if you like :)

@Jasper Oh, I'm not upset, I find it funny that you thought that was my pic :)

@MrShinyandNew: can i ask one thing to you

So, @Caleb, you can try migrating them, they are on-topic, but since the answers are general reference, I think they will simply be closed.
@SankarGanesh sure

@MrShinyandNew: why Traven general chat room is not available for me

1:17 PM
@SankarGanesh Dunno. Is it linked to a site that you're not a member of?

@SankarGanesh I grow my beard, mostly. Sometimes I type code into computers, but I think I'm paid for how long my beard gets

@MrShinyandNew安宇 which site dude

@MattЭллен Wow, I wish I could do that! Though my wife might object

@MattЭллен hmm LOL, :)

user19161
@SankarGanesh You mean you cannot access that room but you can all the others?

1:19 PM
@Jasper in the meta stackoverflow , i was not able to chat option like in other stackexchange sites

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'm included to do that, I'm just a little worried about the "don't migrate junk" rule. I think they are both weak questions to start with.

user19161
@SankarGanesh Have you been banned from that room for some reason?

@Jasper No dude , I never violates the room rules , infact i was not able to see the chat option under my meta stack overflow

user19161
@SankarGanesh Then I have no idea. Ask a mod maybe. I don't even know which room that is.

@SankarGanesh You need to have 20+ rep on meta stackoverflow to chat in the Tavern

user19161
1:21 PM
@MattЭллен So it works differently from other rooms.

@MattЭллен I have 102 reputation in meta , it's ok i will ask TimPost who is one of the moderator of Stackoverflow

@Jasper well, it's on a different server
so the rep is taken only from your MSO account

user19161
@MattЭллен Not very good service then.

user19161
@SankarGanesh Yes, good idea.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I meant correcting the typo with "upset". :-)

user19161
1:24 PM
@Caleb Don't worry too much, or you will lose a lot of hair.

@Jasper ah, gotcha

user19161
Hi @kit. I like your fox better.

enh, I type fast, it's a chat room, even though it's the ELU chat, I don't think perfect spelling is needed.

@Jasper I just edited and migrated both questions.

pairphict spuleng uz enkinsuhkwenshul

user19161
1:25 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Of course, I do it just for fun.

user19161
@MattЭллен perfect spelling is inconsequential!

@Jasper not it's not!

user19161
@Caleb Good, now you keep your hair!

it's very important ;)

but imperfect spelling IS consequential: the consequence is bang bang Jasper's silver hammer comes down on your head

user19161
1:29 PM
@matt I wonder how you look now. What is the length of your beard and hair currently?

user19161
I have lost a lot of hair due to stress. Hope it grows back soon.

@Jasper my hair is shortish - maybe what people consider normal length for a man. My beard is about 10cm

@Jasper Which was I in danger of loosing, top of head or bottom?

I found a pic of matt

user19161
@Caleb Top, stress does not affect beard I think, but I would not know since I don't keep one.

1:32 PM
LOL

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have a feeling that is you.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 that's an excellent pic!

Or, at least, that's what Matt should aspire to

user19161
@MattЭллен Oh dear, a bit like Rhodri.

I wish my beard were so magnificent

1:33 PM
@Jasper is that a bad thing?

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

user19161
@MattЭллен I don't like beards. But it's what you like that matters. If I were a girl I would not go for someone with a beard.

For more awesome beards, click here encrypted.google.com/…

@Jasper I'm tempted to ask about that on skeptics! I do keep one and I'm definitely loosing it up top with no adverse signs below.

@Jasper ah well. It's lucky you're not a girl then! ;)
my beard is like this, but without the moustache or the colour:

user19161
1:36 PM
@Caleb You should just ask a doctor or something!

@Caleb I went to a dermatologist when I was 16 because my hair was thinning on top and he explained that the different parts of your head have different kinds of hair follicles. That's why men will often lose hair on top but not on the sides, and not beards or moustaches or eyebrows.

user19161
Morning @sim!

Allo

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 16 sounds a young age to lose hair.

Bonjour @sim

1:39 PM
@sankar, is there a reason you're calling eveyone dude?
Bonjour @Matt

@Jasper it is. I compensated by just shaving my head, keeping my hair short, that way it looks like it's a choice.

Like Bruce Willis?

@simchona I guess so :)

user19161
@simchona Or Channing Tatum.

user19161
@simchona At least he did not call you that.

1:42 PM
have we discovered @MrShinyandNew's true identities?

@MattЭллен No comment

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have a feeling you are Bruce Willis now.

user19161
Well, don't be shocked if I really am JB.

@Jasper You and JSBangs are the same person?

@Jasper I thought you already figured out my real name, and where I lived, and tracked down photos of me, both current, and from my high-school yearbook.

user19161
1:44 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have figured out your real name indeed, but I stopped there.

@Jasper I have not tried too hard to hide it. I did link to a book I wrote, after all.

user19161
@MattЭллен No, he is an actor, I am a singer.

user19161
@simchona everyone. I have not corrected your spelling for a while.

@Jasper on an iPhone again so thanks
And @sankar, most of us don't know each other's real names, let alone email addresses or Skype.

user19161
@simchona Do watch out for the traffic at least.

user19161
1:54 PM
@matt I actually wanted to be a singer in the past. I might still end up as that by a strange twist of fate.

@Jasper if you're actually JB, then it's already happened!

@Jasper can you sing? If so, just sing. sing, sing, sing. It takes 10,000 hours to become an expert.
That's probably why GraceNote is always singing here in chat, to build up the experience points.

user19161
@MattЭллен I am JB. My Chinese name. And John Lennon, my English name.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 she must have a beautiful voice by now!

@MattЭллен presumably.

user19161
1:58 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I had my own concert in school when I was 16.

@Jasper but have you kept up your practice?

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 No, I declined after that. I was fortunate to be inspired by an excellent conductor in my secondary school choir. He was an excellent operatic tenor.

@simchona cannot get you , are you saying that we donot know each other so we never share their skype id am i right

@sankar, many people here value their privacy immensely. We don't share personal information. And Skype is one of the most personal things you can ask for (gives name, location, age,'etc)

@simchona ok but i m one who shares my probs , hmm , no issuess , i feel unlucky and this is the bad time for me , bcoz of bad people in my life, :)

user19161
2:02 PM
@SankarGanesh Just stay far away from these people. I have met a number of them myself.

@Jasper yes i always simile , when they tease me , but still it was happening for me , some people may thought i complaining here , like an LK.G Student complaining to his/her MOM about his classmates ,but what to do,:) , It is my fate, :)

Also, unless you're on a phone, please spell out "because"

@SankarGanesh I think you mean smile, rather than simile.

@MattЭллен yes you're right i have to improve my English skills

@SankarGanesh no problem, it's just simile is also a word! But it means nothing like smile :)

user19161
2:09 PM
@simchona I am sorry I used "cos" myself on a number of occasions. Please don't get mad.

@Matt: and @MrShinyandNew: and @simchona: Bye i m leaving here , see you guys later, Take Care , Be Happy Always , :)

cya @SankarGanesh

Bye @sankar

user19161
@SankarGanesh Be strong.

@Jasper Be Strong in the sense

user19161
2:11 PM
@SankarGanesh I meant be strong in the midst of the problems you are facing.

@Jasper sure thanks for the tip man Bye again

@SankarGanesh bye

user19161
@sim I figured you are probably on an iphone when you don't use the right arrow even though you should. :-)

2:35 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You just made my morning. I'm listening to that for like the third time.

@aediaλ It's the best Star wars floppy music I've seen so far. It raises the bar. Next step: a whole orchestra of drives, grinding in harmony!

@aedia I like the idea about the little pigs rhyme being the reason for the term "My pigs are killing me" I couldn't think of a source to turn to, to prove it, though.

@MattЭллен Yeah, me neither!
This is pretty awesome.

2:52 PM
Wow! It's like, all I have to do is wish something out loud, and the Internet provides it!

@aediaλ Huh I don't get it! How does he make the drives reach those tones?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 isn't that rule 34? ;)

I don't recall their making more than a low hum or buzz...

@Cerberus the stepper motor makes a humming sound as it moves, so by controlling it carefully, you can make songs
my scanner sings a little song when it warms up
... I am now imagining a chorus of scanners and floppies, all singing together!
@MattЭллен Isn't that just for porn?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Right, I remember the high tones from scanners. And you say the floppy's motor can produce similarly high sounds? I had no idea.

2:56 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 isn't that what you wish for? must just be me then ;D

@MattЭллен well I already know that the internet can provide porn

@MrShinyandNew安宇 aye, and rule 34 means that out there, somewhere, there is disk drive porn

@MattЭллен That's probably true.

@Cerberus As Mr. Shiny says, that's the stepper motor, but if you just write to the drive, you don't get very varied noises computer.howstuffworks.com/floppy-disk-drive3.htm
So people are using stuff like floppymidi to help control the stepper motor, it looks like

Pretty funny.

3:10 PM
> There are many other dangers too (ranging from hard disk corruption to fire)
golly!
I might avoid that then

Oh I always use my main hard disk when my speakers don't work.

This dude has another version.

Q: the most common mistakes in english which programmers make

user278618English is not my native language, and I frequently make mistakes. I know that I don't know of part of them, and sometimes I get feedback from SO, because some of you editing posts by correcting grammar. Is anyone know some list of the most common mistakes, or could give the most irritating mist...

NARQ or OT

I am actually kinda sad now that I don't have spare floppy drives to destroy.

Hi!

3:11 PM
@Cerberus :D a sensible choice.
Hi @Cerberus :)

@MattЭллен Thanks! I also use it for heating when necessary.

@Cerberus I'll have to suggest this project to my brother. It's colder up there where my family lives and I'm sure we left all the spare computers with them.
Fire, shmire.

@Cerberus I actually do that in winter - though not the hard drive specifically, I just leave my web server on. keeps my front room warm!

@aediaλ Yeah it's really handy. When you're out of butane, for example, and you want to fry an egg?

3:14 PM
@MattЭллен The only thing is that electrical energy is far more expensive than other forms.

Sooo many more...
Oh crud, meeting.
Laterz!

Bye!

cya @aedia

Oooh the drilling and scraping sounds are lovely!
I should try that.

@Cerberus practicality? pshaw. plus it gives me a webserver

3:16 PM
Fair enough.
No doubt my computer saves me some gas too.

user19161
I am going to download Fedora 16 beta now!

good luck!

user19161
@MattЭллен I don't need luck for that, though I need plenty for other things, you know what.

Then I wish you a great time!
Which I hope you will have downloading it.

user19161
@Cerberus Thank you. On the other hand, perhaps I need some luck for this as well, since the mirrors are not working well now.

3:26 PM
Then good luck!

:D
see you later friendophiles

user19161
@Cerberus Thank you, and you should wish me luck for the other things too, though you don't really know what they are!

user19161
3:41 PM
Ah, I finally found a good mirror. It should take about 40 min.

4:11 PM
@Jasper Good luck!
@MattЭллен Eww. Don't look at me like that.

user19161
@Cerberus Thanks. And I declare that I have downloaded Fedora 16 beta. Now I will burn the ISO image to a DVD using Brasero disc burner.

user19161
4:27 PM
Hmm I'm surprised nobody wants to do the interview with Grammar Girl.

user19161
Though I think they should interview Cerberus instead of her, since his grammar is probably superior.

user19161
I think we should call Cerberus Grammar Boy then.

5:13 PM
Hehe thanks for the label.
"Boy" sounds ever so outlandish.

@Cerberus I feel the same way about "Girl", but don't tell Grammar Girl I said so...

@aediaλ Hehe.
She does have quite a reputation.

is "outlandish" really the word we want here?

user19161
5:38 PM
@Cerberus Boo! I am running Fedora 16 now as I type. Yay!

user19161
@JSBᾶngs I saw the questions on Linguistics. They are all incomprehensible to me.

user19161
@aediaλ I will tell her now...

@JSBᾶngs "diminutive"? "silly"?

1 hour later…
6:50 PM
So the Grammar Girl interview meta question was updated and it turns out WE are interviewing HER. So, post your questions? or something.

7:06 PM
@JSBᾶngs I don't know, it sounded at once euphemistic and of a culture different to my own, such as Asian or African. I don't use the word "boy" much for adults.
There are of course "old boys"; but here it sounded rather like the name of a band or something that is supposed to sound a bit streetwise.
*from

7:25 PM
@Cerberus I agree. The only way I can reconcile it in my head, to make Boy or Girl in a title/name not seem sort of silly or like a put-down or archaic phrase used for a servant ("little boy", "little girl", "Boy, bring me some water right away") is to associate it with names reclaimed by counterculture movements... Boi, Grrl, riot grrrl...

7:48 PM
@aediaλ Yeah, something like that. Like the Backstreet Boys or Boy George.

user19161
8:28 PM
@cerb I just realised we are one of the few who have not changed our names to include funny symbols!

user19161
And I think the rest will never change it back, so the symbols are for ever!

user19161
Well, adobe flash does not work on Fedora 16 beta. Hope it gets fixed in the final version.

user19161
But I'll probably stick to Ubuntu 11.10 out next week.

Nah they'll come round eventually.

8:51 PM
I was going to add something even crazier for the launch of Linguistics but I haven't thought of anything.

9:02 PM
@RegDwight & @MrShinyandNew Lego Pirates 6271 - Imperial Flagship, 100% Complete Boxed Instructions on sale from a friend of mine, if you're still collecting pirates

Heh. I know someone who's all into ships.
Me, I don't like those huge parts you can't use for anything else...

Aye, they are quite fit for purpose, but not much else
good night

9:39 PM
Night!
Big parts are not entirely useless; in certain professions and certain forms of social intercourse they can be a boon.

10:38 PM
@Cerberus giggles

Of course you would.
