9:10 PM
How come the beetle needs to kill the frog? It seems to eat large part of its body, but how can all that frog meat/blood fit into the beetle? Its abdomen swells a bit, but still.
Normally, it is more advantageous for smaller parasites to keep their host alive as take only as much as it can eat.
Oh, and have you seen the video of the frog that eats larva, then gets killed by it??
The quality of that video is slightly worse, but, oh! The story is magnificent.

@Cerberus No I still haven't seen that one! I never got some of the videos to work here and didn't remember to watch the other videos when at home, where I can install and fiddle with my video players.
@Cerberus I'm emailing myself a note about it now so hopefully I remember...

Let me find it for you.
This is it.
They say you can see blood stains on the larva after it is regurgitated, as evidence that it chewed on the frog's inside parts. But I couldn't see them.

@Cerberus It's a common thing, actually, see tarantula hawks and other similar insects that target bigger beasts.

@Cerberus Wow!
That's so cool.

In the case of the beetle, that big frog lasts for a while.
I don't recall if they clarify it specifically since it's been a while since I read that paper, but I don't think the beetle larva can digest the entire frog.
Just eats the parts it finds edible after taking it down.

9:18 PM
@GraceNote Hmm... don't they use the tarantulae as food for their young?

@Cerberus Tarantula hawks do that, aye, the point is that the food is something that lasts for a while and also is pretty big.

@GraceNote It still seems to eat many times its own size. Or is that an optical illusion?

@Cerberus I guess it stops the beetle from getting killed, so it's a bit of a kill-or-be-killed strategy. Nature doesn't care if you waste some food if you survive.

@Cerberus Have you compared the size of the food you eat to the actual size of your stomach cavity?

@GraceNote Yes, so if the young feed on it for several days, I can imagine why they need that much.

9:20 PM
Note that I'm neither a biologist nor an entomologist - I'm operating purely by logical conjecture, not actual field knowledge. I love bugs, I don't study them though

@aediaλ Well, I don't think the beetle is ever in any danger. Cf. leeches, ticks, lice, etc. etc. And nature does sort of care: if the frog gets killed, it pays off to come up with some kind of defence mechanism that is bad for the beetle. If it is merely a nuisance, like ticks, the bigger animals will usually let it happen, evolutionarily speaking.

@Cerberus As it were, the beetle's existence seems to be in its own way a defense against said frogs

@GraceNote I can't physically eat more than what fits into my digestive system faster than I can digest it.

@Cerberus The larva are in danger, or they would be, if they couldn't kill frogs who think they look like food!

@Cerberus My thought pattern, and hence the earlier note, is that the volume of what you consume is not entirely reflected in the volume of what you store.

9:23 PM
@GraceNote Eh I don't know. Frogs could develop a poisonous skin, stronger legs to kick it off, etc.

@Cerberus Oh, they could, it's always back-and-forth.
I still think the beetle is cooler because it's awesome

@aediaλ Really? They only need to survive. They don't really need to kill the frog in order to survive. Stunning it would seem an interesting option.
@GraceNote I don't know. How could that work? You need to store in your body what you swallow.

@Cerberus But this handles two needs at once - protective needs and food needs
@Cerberus You absorb nutrients. Not the most efficient methods of accomplishing it, but it happens.
Combined with all the mastication to reduce the size of stuff before you swallow, too.

@GraceNote I see no evidence at all of a back-and-forth. In any case, the back-and-forth is less advantageous to the beetle than just letting it have its way and leave (if the frog survives).

@Cerberus I always understood that the whole thing behind natural selection is adaptation and counter-adaptation

9:26 PM
@GraceNote I don't know. There could be something in that; but then why do nearly all smaller parasites keep their host alive, albeit sometimes under worse conditions?
@GraceNote I don't know. You need to swallow it first, before you can absorb the nutrients, right?

Prey learns how to avoid predator, predator learns how to overcome prey's special methods or adapts to a different target, the resultant prey learns how to avoid predator, cycle continues... that's my understanding of natural selection.

@Cerberus They need to grow rapidly so they need to get many times their body size worth of food, I think. If you're like, a plant-eating beetle, for example, you don't have time for frog-fighting.

@Cerberus Smaller parasites operate on a different form than other creature types. I don't think that's really a valid comparison point.

@GraceNote Sure. But killing prey incites more adaptations than just sucking some blood out of it. And less it adapts, the less energy you need to invest in counter-adaptation yourself.
@aediaλ Okay, so you're saying they can digest many times their own size in such a small time (an hour or what is it)?
@GraceNote I suppose it depends on comparative sizes. I grouped the beetles among the smaller parasites.

@Cerberus Beetles... aren't parasites.
Parasites are dependent on hosts. The beetle is just predating on amphibians.

9:30 PM
@GraceNote Yes, but it could have been a parasite (which it is not).
If only it would let the frog live.

Why would it want to be a parasite?
This seems like just a very odd hypothetical

@GraceNote It would want to be a parasite, if possible, because that would not induce the frog to adapt and evolve some kind of defence.

@Cerberus A parasite is, by definition, toxic or harmful to its hosts

If mosquitos were lethal, we'd have very thick skins by now, or we'd be extinct. Neither of those is good for the mosquito.

Mosquitos aren't parasites
They're bloodsucking insects.

9:34 PM
@GraceNote Yes, but as long as it's only a nuisance, the host has less incentive to adapt.
@GraceNote Well, whatever they are.

@Cerberus There's a very big difference between parasitism and just something that feeds by blood

The proper terms and definitions do not concern me.

One describes a symbiotic relationship, the other describes a form of sustenance.
It's closer to "Why not just be an herbivore?"

@GraceNote Then substitute whichever word you would use for a beetle that merely wounded a frog and sucked some blood, v. one that kills a frog.

Which, to wit, that would also prevent the frogs from attacking them since they wouldn't have to deal with them.
@Cerberus That's simply a matter that the beetle simply hasn't developed any sort of biological process to derive sustenance out of blood.

9:36 PM
It does seem to suck on the frog.
It doesn't only eat its flesh.

It's devouring it for the body, not just for the blood.

@Cerberus I really don't know how fast they eat. It definitely looks like the ones in the experiment left a lot of frog leftovers, but that wasn't that long... perhaps in the wild they would stick around for a day and eat the whole thing. It's more like they need to eat many times their body weight during their larval stage, but I have no memory of exactly how much. Some caterpillars, it's like thousands of times or something, but I think those are a bit different from beetle larvae.

@aediaλ Yeah OK, but the adult beetles didn't eat less than the larvae.
@GraceNote I think there might be something in either 1.) this synergy of feeding on the frog and protecting oneself against it (not exactly sure whether that would be enough), and 2.) the beetle has enough time to digest several times its own weight in the period displayed in the video.
@aediaλ Yeah OK, but if they stick around for a long time, I'd not expect them to eat so much in an hour.
Oh well.

@Cerberus Well, I think it's fairer to see the frog as the prey moreso than the predator. It's using the predator instincts of the frog as the lure

It's all speculation.

9:41 PM
It's kind of an evil trap, really.

@GraceNote Sure. But that still doesn't explain why it needs that much meat/blood/etc.

@Cerberus I already gave my best guess on the quantity.

I think @aedia's more on the right track, though, in terms of growth and all that.

The paper says they actually left a pile of bones
And the picture is scary

9:43 PM
@aediaλ That's what I thought I recalled

So the video doesn't show the whole story, they just stopped recording video at some point when the frog was done for.
The photo shows a beautiful plump larva still nibbling on what doesn't even resemble a frog anymore.

@aediaλ So cute!

@GraceNote The larva is cute, but the pile of bones is a little icky. If that were my larva's school photo I'd 'shop it out.

@aediaλ Mind you, I squeal in delight in seeing a giant centipede nomming and eating a mouse. It's quite a bloody spectacle and yet I still find it soooo cute

@aediaλ No no, that fits the larva perfectly!
@GraceNote Yeah I just find it very remarkable that the beetle/larva can digest so fast!

9:47 PM
@Cerberus Quite

@aediaλ I do like the picture a lot, btw.

@GraceNote The actual luring and eating is so cool, but at some point, mama beetle's gonna come over and ask "are you done with your nice crunchy frog or you just gonna sit there picking at your plate all day?"

@aediaλ Naw, that momma beetle would be giving a look of disapproval if the bones weren't completely clean of meat.

Hahaha.

"Always clean your plate, young lady."
