Q: Answered Question

Preston BahrI'm ashamed to say I asked a question yesterday, and got an answer the same day. If this were a MS question, I would have been waiting until H--- froze over before anyone answered. Anyway, I got an answer from Christopher Kyle Horton. I tried his advice, and it worked perfectly. My new question i...

Does that look good?

@NathanOsman Looks nice, but a bit small....

Well, I can't really make the icon any larger.

Yeah :(
It does look good, though.

12:22 AM
I'll show you the icon on Ubuntu for comparison.
(Click to see a larger version.)

I don't know why, but that looks better some how.
@NathanOsman Try reversing what is transparent and what isn't on the OS X version.

You mean switch to a dark menubar?

No. I mean, make the N transparent and the arrow things filled in.

12:37 AM
Might be worth a shot.

@Fabby I have a nice Q for you that would need a link to your "How to manually partition an Ubuntu install alongside Windows" or so posts. askubuntu.com/q/586631/367990 Some easy rep for you ;D I would have done if I could find the link...

1:05 AM
Something fishy is going on. Twice now, some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working. The volume keys and the print screen key, for sure. Perhaps others as well.

@NathanOsman Hardware or Software, this is the question!
I feel like Shakespeare... ;D

Software - data shows up in the appropriate /dev/input/... file when I press the keys.
The Linux kernel is definitely seeing the keystrokes.

Then the universal first-aid is a reboot?
Or that strange raising skinny elephants cheat...

Doesn't look right in Windows Server 2012...

1:21 AM
Did you try my suggestion?
@NathanOsman Oh my. Nope. Definitely not.

@RPiAwesomeness No, not yet. It would be a fair bit of work, so I want to explore all possible options.

@NathanOsman I would say it needs a black border like the other symbols. And it should be slightly bigger

@NathanOsman It would? Can't you just change an icon file?
@ByteCommander Good idea.

@RPiAwesomeness Well, it's harder than it sounds :P

@NathanOsman Ah. OS X being a pain? :P

1:23 AM
Nah, it's an SVG icon, so I have to change the shape, re-export, minify, etc.

Aaaah
And you can't use SVGs as indicator icons :P
@NathanOsman Actually, can't you just change the design for the parts to have a fill and no fill?
Now, the minifying might be an issue. Not sure if you have to do something fancy with that.

Trust me, it's possible, just difficult :P

Fair enough :)

How I miss the good old times where a 32x32 bitmap was enough for an icon...

Oh bleh. Bitmaps. So old fashioned.
Everyone needs to support SVGs.
SVGs are soo much better.

1:27 AM
ja ja bla bla...
thank god you need no icons in cli applications...

Oh yeah :)
Text input & ncurses FTW
Urgh. It's sooo hard to wait until I can get good quality video footage before playing with my new Pi :(

1:42 AM
SVG works well for larger icons, but they alias poorly for smaller icons. NitroShare uses SVGs for larger icons but also includes PNG files for smaller icons that have been hand-optimized.
@RPiAwesomeness: --^

@NathanOsman Definitely better.

I realize it's not Mac, but I finally tried your idea.
Now I'm curious to see how that icon looks on a Mac :P

Yeah :D

@NathanOsman Looks great! But it still seems to me like the icon could grow another 2 pixels? Looks so tiny...

It's already right at the borders. It literally cannot be any larger.

1:46 AM
@NathanOsman So, this is something you use to transfer files between computers & friends? I might give this a try.

Right now it's limited to a local network.

I'm so often messing with graphics and writing on my laptop when I'm on the go, and then want to get it on my desktop and have to wait for my slow laptop to write to my USB stick.
@NathanOsman Well, that's perfect for me! :D

So I can use it to transfer between my VMs, between laptops and desktops, and between my Mac and PC.
^--- on the Mac with both light and dark menubar
It's certainly usable!
At first I wasn't sure I'd be able to use a single tray icon for all platforms...
...but now things are starting to look pretty good.

Definitely better.
Can you detect what theme a user is using? I mean, obviously other apps can.

2:04 AM
Yes and no.
First of all, it shouldn't even need to detect the theme since OS X will invert icons automatically when a special flag is set.
Unfortunately, Qt doesn't currently provide access to this flag.

@NathanOsman Oh, nice.
@NathanOsman Oh, boo.

:P
Welcome to the wonderful world of cross-platform apps.

Can you create a wrapper or something? I'd offer to help, but my C++ skills aren't quite at that level yet.
:(

Qt is essentially a wrapper.

Wrappers on wrappers :P

2:06 AM
But it doesn't provide access to the native handles/pointers for the underlying APIs.
At least, not for tray icons.

I see.
Downloading the build requirements now. Gonna give it a go :)
Am I the only one who completely timed out?
'cause everything else was loading just fine - just not chat.
Even the other SE sites - just none of the chat rooms.
@NathanOsman Building it currently. Do you mind if I do a blog post/video review of it?
@NathanOsman:
$ ./nitroshare
Cannot open file ':/data/nitroshare.svg', because: Unknown error
Cannot open file ':/data/nitroshare.svg', because: Unknown error
Oh dear.
All the peoples are joining
Good gravy
Did something get flagged? O.o

2:29 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, chat was down for a few minutes there.
It wasn't just you :P

Boy. They've been having issues all day.

@RPiAwesomeness You are more than welcome to write a review. I do have one request though... can it wait until version 0.3 is finalized? I expect to have that done within a week or two.
There are still some minor issues to get worked out.
@RPiAwesomeness I'm working on that one right now :P

@NathanOsman No problem :) I've got to finish a couple of other videos - my Raspberry Pi 2 video being first and foremost :D

Did you get yours?

9 hours ago, by RPi Awesomeness
user image

2:31 AM
Cool!

Yeah :)

I'd love to hear how it works.

@NathanOsman I just sent some line to you here when the chat broke down. Now as it recovered, the message is lost. :-( Now I don't remember what I wanted to tell you...

It's been uber hard not to open it and play with it until I can get good unboxing footage :P
Dang curse of being a Youtuber/reviewer

I always have a camera ready when packages arrive for exactly that reason.

2:33 AM
The issue today was that I had 4H today & by the time I got back it was dark :(
School before, 4H after, dark after 4H :P
I'm gonna get the footage tomorrow though

@NathanOsman Oh yes! About the black arrows in your icon! Do they change color when traffic is on? I wanted to suggest you also to use another color for the dark theme because black on dark gray is invisible, but you talked about this already.

@ByteCommander Ooo. That's an interesting idea.
Might be a pain to implement though...
@NathanOsman I know! I can write that code for you! :D

@RPiAwesomeness You have only 4h of daylight? Living at the north pole?

@ByteCommander Yeah. Y'know. I move from Africa, to the USA, then to the north pole. It's all normal stuff :)
jk - I almost assuredly don't know enough C++ to do that :P

I live close to the north pole.
<--- is a penguin, after all

2:36 AM
;D

In all truthfulness, I live in Canada - the north pole is technically within our borders.
Though I don't live anywhere near the northern part of the country.
In fact, I'm only about 50 miles or so from the US border.

Wouldn't you just have to load many icons (one with both arrows black, one with the upper in e.g. blue, one with the lower e.g. in yellow, one with both colored)
@NathanOsman Penguins live at the South pole!!!

@ByteCommander I was waiting for somebody to correct me... :)

That is the reason why a penguin never got caught by any polar bear :-D Luck for Tux!
So you should just be able to switch the icons while the app runs. Must be possible somehow.
And maybe use a mutipage gif?

2:40 AM
@ByteCommander Yup, I could make it blink while the transfer is in progress, sure.
I can't do it for the upcoming release, too little time left. But it can be a feature for a future version.

Bleh. Timed out again.
@NathanOsman I was gonna ask you before I was rudely interrupted by the chat going kaput: What's it like in Canada?
I've always thought it would be kinda cool to say I'm from Canada, dunno why.

Depends where you live.
I live on the west coast, so it's pretty similar to any major US city.

Probably because I've lived so close to it.

We don't have Abraham Lincoln on the back of our coins, though :P

@NathanOsman I know that feature from my Windows firewall. It has two arrows, one for incoming and one for outgoing traffic. Gray arrow = no traffic, blue = allowed traffic, red = blocked traffic

2:47 AM
:D Yeah. Pennies are sooo useless.

We don't have pennies anymore.
I think it was last year we got rid of them.
If you buy something with cash, it's rounded to the nearest nickel now.

Yeah. Kinda smart
Makes more sense IMO

I wish we did that, pennies are so useless.
Gone are the days you could get a candy bar for 5 cents.

The copper/whatever alloy in the penny was worth about 1.8x the value of the penny itself :P
People were melting them down :P

I guess my few Canadian pennies are keepsakes now :P
@NathanOsman Wow lol.

2:49 AM
Do you guys still have $1 and $2 bills?

@NathanOsman Speaking of coinage, do your coins still have queen Victoria/Elizabeth on them?

This is the firewall tray icon (no In/Out traffic):

@NathanOsman Yeah.
$2 isn't a common bill though

@NathanOsman $1 yes, $2 aren't printed anymore and you hardly ever see them.

@Seth Queen Elizabeth.

2:50 AM
But you can go to any bank and ask for it.

Something like that would also look nice. I think it's the desktop icon of a newer version:

@NathanOsman I'll take that as a yes :)

We have what are called "loonies", which are $1 coins. $2 coins are called "toonies".

@ByteCommander Whoa. Dat icon. Ick

I thought you had some with Victoria too though.. Guess not.

2:51 AM
@Seth Nope, before that (and you have to go back to the 40s), we had a man on the back.

@RPiAwesomeness Ick? What do you mean by "Ick"? Got a hiccup? ;-D

Ugly icon :P

Our toonies are made of two metals:
Whoa... they're not that big :P

@RPiAwesomeness Be a good goat and be quiet... :P

Hey that's neat! And that's common?

2:52 AM
Very common. Though they don't often look that shiny :)

Only collectors coins look like that in the US.

The neat thing is that we had $2 bills when I was born. They switched to toonies in 1996.

@NathanOsman 2€ (Euro) coins are build the same way
gray metal outside and yellow metal inside
1€ coin is inversed

The only cool thing about US currency is that we have 100+ quarter designs.

2:54 AM
Oh, we have tons of quarter designs too.
Whenever there's a special event, it seems, they come up with a new design for a quarter.
They did a series for the year 2000 and released a special collector's coin every month. I still have the full collection. There are a lot of them in general circulation though.

Same in Europe/Germany.
Every country has its own backsides for every coin (1ct 2ct 5ct 10ct 20ct 50ct 1€ 2€)

@NathanOsman Oh that's neat. I've never seen a Canadian quarter (that I can remember). Just pennies, dimes and dollar coins.

And there are many special 2€ coins. MANY!

We have new bills now. They're made of a special synthetic plastic which is partially transparent.
Much more difficult to forge (not that I tried :P).

Transparent money?? Nice!

2:58 AM
That's rather neat.

They are exchanging euro bills as well.
5€ is changed about 1-2 years ago, 10€ last year.

The new Euro bills look like monopoly money to me :-P

@ByteCommander Haha, think you could fool anyone? :P

Completely unrelated, but here's what our old $5 bills looked like:

2:59 AM
@Seth No, they say they are harder to fake

And someone did this:

they only look... erm... too colorful and... don't know

Lol?

@NathanOsman That's hilarious.

I know :P

It'll take ten seconds to answer this, but why? O.o

@muru Tell him to learn about English grammar and proper punctuation before he starts bash-scripting!

OP's a mac user. No point.

isn't sh-scripting almost the same like bash-scripting? I thought sh works on mac?
@muru Oh, and I re-edited that Q you spent your time on: askubuntu.com/suggested-edits/72941 Another one that wastes our time with the need of an almost complete re-write to be understandable and answerable. And 2 in 1. But I left him a comment to edit part 2 out.

Thanks. I tried to structure it, gave up and just did some code formatting. <sigh>
I don't know what Mac uses for sh, but it does have bash
an old version anyway.. 3.x

3:17 AM
@muru But this does not make English less important!

Oh, my reply was about learning English. When has a Mac user ever listened to good advice?
(not about bash) :D

Q: Display review queue length in the actual review page

ByteCommanderI would like to see how many pending reviews are left in the queue while I review. So my request: A sma...

Ah, now I got that! Sorry, 4:20AM here and I can't sleep.
Would you have a vote left on my meta request?

I don't see why not.

@muru The same unteachable Mac user again! askubuntu.com/q/586772/367990

Somebody tell him the last line is not part of the ssh command.

@muru was just about to answer that the last command will only be processed after the ssh command returned and that he has to write a & after the ssh command. Wrong?

osascript sounds like a mac command
@ByteCommander So I think he wants to run osascript on the other, which is probably also a Mac, but running OSX
Also, LTS releases come once every two years. Next LTS is 16.04

No idea what osascript is, but to me it looks like the script gets stuck in the ssh.
So I write my answer now...
@muru Oh, so 15.04 will also only have 9 months support? I edit my answer over there too... :(

Yep. You can check here: ubuntu.com/info/release-end-of-life

Thanks for correcting. Edited!

Q: Ask about the ubuntu (I'm beginner)

hello_worldFirst question. when I installed ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, to upgrade latest version, I used the terminal command sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade when I finished I have a curious thing. I do not need download newest iso ubuntu file and install! just typing these ...

@Seth I already edited the worst out of that. You only have to approve my edit: askubuntu.com/suggested-edits/72941

@ByteCommander @muru Any specific reason you didn't vtc that? (like maybe I'm missing something?)

@Seth You really think removing the "(Up)votes please :-D" was necessary?

@Seth client is Ubuntu, server is Mac
(I think)
Oh, sorry, wrong question

3:50 AM
@ByteCommander Necessary? No, but I don't think leaving it was a good idea.

I hoped some one would come along and clean it up - the first part is probably a dupe.

@muru The second question makes it pretty clear OSX is the OS being asked about.. but I could be missing something.

@Seth I wrote that Q. Why no good idea? It is that short that it does not bother. A bit fun never hurt anybody

Very odd. I just got a pop-up asking if something was spam or not.

and I don't think that needs to be starred.

But how.. why.. am I getting a flag notice?

@ByteCommander A lot of people won't take it as "a bit of fun". I was just trying to save you that interaction. You can rollback if you want.

I don't even participate there.

@muru Like I said, chat flags are system wide.

@NathanOsman Fantastic! made my day...
(already!)

I'll never know (to this day) why Windows XP didn't join the "WORKGROUP" workgroup instead of "MSHOME". Nor why the entire machine needed to be rebooted every time the workgroup changed.

In RL? Medieval tech is basically renewable, so If you would introduce a religion that limits population growth, it'd cause stagnation, so it could last until a pandemic wiped it out... I'd say 300-500 years? >:)

^--- why I hate Windows.
Oh wait a second here...
So apparently I am that dumb. I downloaded the Visual C++ 2012 redistributable package instead of the 2013 one.
Yes, VC++ 2013 == version 12 and VC++ 2012 == version 11.
Confusing, yes. Stupid, yes.

Okay.
Clears throat.
Let's try that build again. From the top.

7:06 AM
There. That time it worked.

@NathanOsman Because it's broadcast-based and it's easier for the Microsoft developer group to just say "reboot" then to inform all developers on the entire planet that a workgroup name can change, so never to store it in a variable, and always use the Windows API to fetch it... >:) So that's half of your question answered...
@NathanOsman: sorry for starring that! I just couldn't resist! ;-)

I will definitely let it in the answer as long as I did not figure out anything else (better)
It is just that performing all those settings in a GUI and installing additional software first is not that - user friendly and easy, I think

I use it all the time...
The only thing I expect you to do is to test it out on your particular solution as I used my gut feeling not to use a window class

So my wish is to just add another two lines to the script that people can c&p.

(which is the only thing I place)

Yeah, well....

The solution gets the window title and identifies them by that?

Ubuntu doesn't do that out of the box, so you need CCSM to do advanced stuff like this...
